Obama: My Re-Election Proves Americans Want the Wealthy to Pay More in Taxes

Getty Images
President Barack Obama said in his weekly address Saturday that his re-election is proof that Americans want taxes raised on the wealthy combined with spending cuts to reduce the deficit.
“As I said over and over again on the campaign trail, we can’t just cut our way to prosperity. If we’re serious about reducing the deficit, we have to combine spending cuts with revenue – and that means asking the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more in taxes,” Obama said.
He added, “I’m open to compromise and new ideas, but I refuse to accept any approach that isn’t balanced. I will not ask students or seniors or middle-class families to pay down the entire deficit while people making over $250,000 a year aren’t asked to pay a dime more in taxes. This was a central question in the election. And on Tuesday, we found out that the majority of Americans agree with my approach – Democrats, independents, and some Republicans.”
The president called on Congress to first extend middle-class tax cuts while working on a larger deficit reduction plan.
“It’s a step that would give millions of families and 97 percent of small businesses peace of mind that will lead to new jobs and faster growth,” he said. “There’s no reason to wait.”
Noting that there will be “differences and disagreements in the months to come,” Americans on Tuesday “said loud and clear that you won’t tolerate dysfunction, or politicians who see compromise as a dirty word.”
“You want cooperation,” Obama said. “You want action. That’s what I plan to deliver in my second term, and I expect to find leaders from both parties willing to join me.”

The federal government has a spending problem, and they want to pass it along to others to deal with. The federal government is pathetic. Posted on November 10, 2012 at 9:56amYour re-election proves that the majority of Americans want more ‘free’ stuff! They are too myopic to realise that NOTHING is ‘free’! You have enjoyed the largesse of EVERYONE around you! That’s why YOU think that if someone built a buisiness, THEY didn’t do it, it was the roads or the electricity or the people that worked for them (and were paid a competive wage) did it! Of course there is a little, teensie, tiny bit of truth to that. In YOUR case, YOU didn’t do it, THEY did it! Those that built you into the Santa Claus President did it FOR YOU! Instead of blasting ‘the rich’, someone ought to do a national survey that asks ‘Do you expect your neighbor to pay your way through life?’ The answer would be telling. If ‘yes’, THAT’s why YOU got elected! If ‘no’, then what got you elected was the ‘character assassination’ politics against Romney, ‘The Republicans’, ‘The rich’, etc. This was a ‘hate’ election. It isn’t race, but it is hate and envy in its worst form!!! And it there is racism, it is the very people who think they are disadvantaged who are the racists, not the ones who are depicted as such!!! You are so delusional!!!

His mandate is a womandate. And there really was nothing there. That is about it. He is still giving empty political speeches. He stands there with an audience when he should be directly speaking to us in a serious way and answering questions from the press. Not that they would ask anything relevant. I can’t get over thinking that something is terribly wrong with the election. More than 100% of some precincts voted, a lot of the military didn’t get ballots…….I know the results will remain the same and the election is declared over, but a good hard look at what actually happened in the swing states so that we can clean up this process would be worth investing in. We need to have confidence in our system.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 10:12amDear comrade Liberalmann,
1. The article you are siting shows job growth by small business not small business growth. It is impossible to grow jobs if your unemployment at below 5% (considered by economists as full employment: anyone who wants to work works), which is what it was for most of the Bush’s time in the office. If you have pool of 10 people and 8 of them are willing/wanting/needing to work and all 8 of them are working then, how would you grow the number of workers (I am not trying to illustrate percentages, just the logic).
2. The conversation here is about marginal tax rates and not job growth (they are connected but without bringing tax rates into conversation it’s not relevant)
3. Here is the kicker: government individual tax revenue 2010: 1.1trillion and 58% ($638bil. of it from top 5% (Adj.Gross Income of $155k per family). If you DOUBLE their tax rate you will get additional $638 billion. Our deficit is 1.2 trillion/year, which is double of that number. So even if you double tax rates of top 5% income earners in the country you are still short. Guess what these people would do if you double their rates. They certainly won’t work or show their income. The smaller increase say 10% will bring only 63billion and that is about 5% of the deficit. Not even a drop in a bucket of water.
4. Top 5% by the way would include some families like an engineer working in Silicon Valley for $150k/yr and his wife a family doctor at $130k/yr and two kids. Are they the

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 10:49amYour missing the big picture here, it’s not about reducing the deficit, it’s about punishing those that have been more productive and successful. This is a move to break the will of the strong, hurting them financially. He already has the 51% of the “weaklings” following him, the 49% of business owners are the ones that would give resistance to the ruler.
The 49% don’t want handouts or can be swayed with trinkets and beads. He is breaking the resistance of the stronger population. How many of you will say screw it, I’m not paying any taxes? Answer, a very few % will take that stance, the alternative is the IRS throwing you in jail, it’s a win win for the king. We the people have allowed this to happen, we did not fight hard enough, get engaged enough, care enough. The option is to shut up and take it or move, both are crappy options but that’s all you’ve got at this point. Me personally, I will probably move to a Central American country and watch the US crumble to a statist country. If you don’t think you are a target by this king, you are sadly mistaken, if you post here, bought a gun, ammo, ect, you’re on the list. Good luck my fellow (ex) Americans.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 11:25am@Liberal – the problem with the “clinton tech boom” and claims that small businesses grew at a faster rate is twofold: (1) there won’t be another tech boom, and (2) many of the high-revenue sources of the time were fraudulent as the president was (Enron & Tyco are two examples).
Also, under the so-called “Bush tax cuts,” the IRS received higher revenues than the Clinton years. Oops…kind of throws the logic of taxing higher to create more revenue. The key to economic growth, as proven throughout history, is lower taxes. This stimulates more growth. More growth equates to increased expansion in the marketplace. Increased expansion makes for more people working. More people working equals more taxes paid to the government at every level.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 11:49amAbsolutely, that is the biggest reason Romney/Ryan didn’t make it, however there are other reasons also. We have to make half the country SEE that Bush was a lame duck after 2006 when Reid and Pelosi took over congress. It was Reid and Pelosi that allowed Dodd and Frank to push the sub-prime mortgage issue. As late as 2 months before the housing collapse, Dodd (who had financial holdings in Freddy Mac), Frank, (who had a boyfriend in the top brass of Fanny Mae), and Maxine Waters, stood up in fron of a joint session of congress and said Fanny and Freddy were doing fine, just leave them alone. We have to get the message out there that is isn’t just half the country that is now screwed. We’re ALL screwed. Obama sees anyone white, living above poverty level, able to fill their glove compartment with groceries and still have money left over as rich, and not paying their fair share. Another thing that has to be addressed is how the majority can be held hostage to a handfull of states, and districts. I hope we still have time, but I see the US now circling the drain.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 4:19pmRaising taxes on the wealthy alone will not move the needle on the deficit. Simply because they have the least amount of individual tax payers out of all the brackets. The largest bracket is middle income earners. It’s just math. The deficit must be closed with a combination of cuts and mostly increased GDP. Increased GDP over time is necessary to decrease the debt load which is imperative we do yesterday. Time is quickly running out and we will be just like Greece. You morons will scream to take more from the rich and there will be none left. As entitlement costs increase and GDP goes down the Government will vacuum up anything not nailed down. It will be an insatiable beast. No amount will be enough.
They will raise taxes on the wealthy just to hose them. Get em’. That’s all this is. Anyone that doesn’t believe that I refer you to the IRS website.

Why do you think all the poll modeling was on 2008 and not on 2010? What about the SoS project? Voter fraud will be smothered by these scandals. Sleight of hand and overwhelming the system. The election results do not make any sense…not just because our guy lost but there are precincts where he got 99% of the vote. I live in one of the most conservative places there is and we only saw 10% go Obama. What about the pollsters all withdrawing early and calling a state that went the other way? After 2010, they had a map of where exactly they needed to take over to secure the vote predicting where the tea party was strong. After that won, we were only MORE wound up to vote. The results would have had to ne skewed by 10% from the middle to make a 20 point gap. Too much at stake to simply just throw our hands up and capitulate that the Overton wimdow has not been affected by the real grass roots in this country. The media and especially disappointing is Fox even saying maybe you conseevarives need to skirt the tea party and embrace amnesty. Reagan allowed amnesty and next cycle latino support went down nearly 10% for the RINO parry we know now. That is what will happen on everything we cave to.

Listen to the boldness and the concise language used in this speech. It is night and day compared with today’s political climate. We have allowed the left to slowly chip away at our values in the name of meeting in the middle and working with them. It is their agenda to pull us farther and farther left.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 9:04amBarry just doesn’t get it. 90% of my customers are wealthy. Raising their taxes will result in three things:
My sales will drop meaning I will send less to the IRS.
I will collect less sales tax for my state.
I will lay people off and the IRS will collect no payroll tax on them.
I don’t really care anymore. I can make it with a 50% drop in sales but I will do it without any employees.

Sure..they say they should have to pay more tax..but do you think that they do? Buffet always says that but he owes millions..It is the middleclass and the poor that will have higher taxation placed upon them through carbon tax..oil and gas..electricity etc..we’ve seen nothing yet..talk is cheap..the cost of living will not be..jobs lost..companies closing..On a happy note..Hilter not only killed 6 million “Jews” to get others to invade Palestine for the purpose of the NWO..but he also killed 7 million others..amongst whom were “union workers..Catholics.Christians…homosexuals.handicapped..mentally ill and dissidents..Rothschilds..Kuhn Loeb Bank..Brown..Merriman Brothers and other NWO companies funded him..Rothschilds also started the secret societies plus the UN..Trilateral Commission.and the Council on Foreign Relations..They are said to be of the tribe of Dan..the serpent of the Bible.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 10:03amObama will just imprison you for “not contributing”. As example, in Maryland there’s such a thing called “voluntary impoverishment”, in which non-custodial parents continue to accrue child support debt should it be deemed (by very socialist judges) their unemployment was self-imposed. I can easily see how that tactic would be applied to your situation, should you choose to fire employees or “… not contribute your ‘fair’ share”.
Everybody needs to completely understand that “life, liberty, and property ownership” are probably gone for good as inalienable rights in this country … right along with the pursuit of happiness.

But I think that is part of the plan. Reduce the standard of living in the US so that we will be able to move into the world government run by the UN. Vance, you have to be kidding! I don’t think there is even ONE person who supports the “tea party” who doesn’t know that the original “tea party” was about taxation without representation. What you don’t seem to know is that most who are tea party supporters are fifty and above – those of us in that age group went to schools that taught us VERY well, especially in American History. Of course, that was before the Teachers’ Union ran the schools, and we were well-educated.
Since the late 1960′s, textbooks have been systematically “reviewed” and rewritten, resulting in an inaccurate and incomplete description of American History. In many cases, the truth has been purged.

Pretty conclusive evidence that Americans are not as afraid of taxes as Republicans are of Grover Norquist.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 8:56amThat isn’t true Barry because only the people who voted for you,if you believe the numbers subscribe to your collectivist idea of redistribution of wealth. We all know he could raise the rate on the evil ‘rich’ to 100% to satisfy his simpleton uneducated parasitical base and it won’t do any good. Primarily because they wouldn’t pay that rate because there’s loopholes to everything. The laffer curve comes into play here as well because of diminishing return.
Personally I think all taxation is theft but we’ll always have taxes and a president to pit one class against the other. It won’t be long and we’ll have only two classes, the poor and the rich and Barry’s plan will be complete,to end the middle class and eventually America, scoff if you like but a blind man can see where this ship is going.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 9:47amIf the Dems had held the House in 2010, we would have won the 2012 election. What did taking the House do for us, Obamacare went through anyway and a Republican House was nothing more than a convenient excuse for the Marxist pig’s policy failures.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 10:16amI know Slayer, I’m just saying that all the anger that flipped the House didn’t really affect anything. Give the people exaclty what they think they want, all of Obama’s policies exactly as he outlines them. It will crash the system and we can start over. Otherwise the economy continues to limp along and Obama can blame “Republican obstructionism in the House”. Rip the damned band-aid off and let it bleed.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 10:54amPRONGONZO . . . Here’s what’s really gonna stick in your craw. The economy will accelerate its recovery. Businesses – those vaunted “job creators” you’re always defending – now realize that the zero-regulation environment they were waiting on isn’t to be. And being the capitalists that they are, they will willingly re-enter the marketplace with their heretofore sidelined investment capital. Even though they wanted to make 50 cents on every dollar, they’re willing to make 40 cents, because 40 cents is better than zero-return hoarding.
Now, no business ever hired a person they didn’t need – which is the root of your “job creator” conceit. So the other half of the equation is driving demand – and that rests with the middle class.
It’s just a shame that Mitt and the conservatives won’t get to take credit for the coming growth.
I know you don’t want any of this to happen. You’d rather wring your hands and fantasize about the death of 150 million American parasites. That’s your nature – resentful victimhood and revenge. In fact, I think it’s in the Republican platform, right there next to God. But know this, America saw through your self righteousness and hypocrisy and faux patriotism. The sleeping giant wasn’t an angry old white man after all. It turned out to be a gay woman named Contessa. America – love it or leave it.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 3:01pmPants, the only flaw with your hypothisis with the 40 cents is, at a certain point, the risk for the profit does not out weigh risk, exposure to law suits, coming regs. etc., I have had a lot of jobs that went bad, many times I have turned a hundred dollar bill into $10.00 dollar bill or have it cost me $10.00 to even do a job, with the bad economy there is no fat on the jobs……. thus projects are removed from the table, hence the huge layoffs we just witnessed, sometimes money on the side in a safe account is best.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 9:04amIt is a mandate to he who talks down his nose to all. If the republican candidate had won by the same margin the democrat/socialist/communist news media would be in an uproar and the democrat machine would be in the courts demanding a re-count if not a re-vote. Oblamer would not have conceded and he would be yelling for “action”.
Demonrats own and operate 99% of media outlets, 99% of pop culture, and the means by which votes are counted. Thats their mandate (which describes male demonrat sexual preference as well)

So I guess this is the official line of the far-Right now, that people ly voted for Obama because they
“want free stuff”. Unlike all of those billionaire CEO’s who were pulling for Romney because they didn’t expect anything in return at all, right?

They voted for free stuff.
They will get it for a period of time but the money is running out, then what will they do? You will see an unprecedented wave of business closures over the coming year, in fact it has already started.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 8:47amMr Obama all that your re-election means is that most of America has not seen the ugly evil in your soul: you are a narcissist, liar, sociopath and a man who sees himself as a god-king on earth. When your fall comes, it will be hard and fast.
May God have mercy on your soul, for I doubt the wrath of the American people will.

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 9:57am2.5 million people die in this country every year. The older conservatives died at a higher rate than the young drooling idiots over the last four years. In spite of this, Obama’s turnout fell three times more than the Republican’s did. Reagan created a generation of young conservatives. Bush sure as heck did not. If we don’t create young conservatives, we are beyong the tipping point. The looming financial collapse may do the trick.

Precincts got more votes than voters. Some votes haven’t been counted. Conservative area polling places were extremely busy.I accept that Obama is our president for 4 more long years, but let’s be sure our voting system is honest for the future.

Young people today don’t care about race or sexual orientation or what religion you are. And since those are the things that DEFINE conservatism today, you’re SOL. It’s not young people who have to change. Conservatives have to change. And well, you’re too self righteous for that. Proof? Thinking you could pray and fast your way to an Obama defeat. No, sorry, demographics have rendered the right wing extremists irrelevant. It’s the people’s will. And isn’t that what makes America great?

Posted on November 10, 2012 at 12:15pmAgree 57 million people didn’t want him as President – He bought the Presidency with the Promise of Free Stuff and the Liberal Media and unfortunately people actually believe that. I dare to say they will never see their free stuff, will beg those of us who could help to help and I know I will say NO. In fact the latest report I saw was that Red Cross donations were down considerably for their pleas to help Sandy victims and Fema was closed because of weather. It would appear people are waking up and saying sorry we will take care of our family and you need to do the same. I think we will see more of this as we go forward. Harsh, maybe. But sometimes the road is harsh to get those who need to take care of themselves to do it. I know they will no longer get a dime from me as the government takes enough and if they have a problem with that then they freeloaders of the world can go knock on the White House door of the man who promised to take care of them. I know I did not make that promise. My commitment is to GOD, FAMILY and COUNTRY. I have my God and Family under control and now because of a bunch of freeloading no goods have to focus on Country. But find peace that 57 million of us are doing the same thing. No more free hand outs from this family. You learn to take care of yourself or you die. Harsh but true. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.
