(TheBlaze/AP) — Even as the lights came for many who lost power in New York and New Jersey during Superstorm Sandy and a later nor’easter, hundreds of residents protested Saturday outside a Long Island utility, frustrated by its slow response to outages in their area.
Power restoration has been significantly slower there than in other areas hit by the storm, and some of the 130,000 blacked out homes and businesses may not have power restored until the end of Tuesday, according to the Long Island Power Authority.
In the rest of the region hardest hit by the storm, most service was expected to be restored by the end of the weekend, though that doesn’t include tens of thousands of homes too damaged to juice up.

Many homes not only don’t have power, but were completely flooded. (Photo: Fox 5)
“We are sitting in a cold house. No one comes by,” said John Mangin of Levittown, N.Y. “There should be criminal charges against the CEO and the executive board of LIPA for failure to do their jobs.”
He was among about 300 people staging a rally in front of LIPA’s office in Hicksville, N.Y. Not all were without power, but some who have power said they were there to protest LIPA’s lack of communication.
LIPA chief operating officer Michael Hervey said they were aware customers haven’t gotten the information they’ve needed from the utility, partly because of an outdated information technology system they’re in the process of updating.
“I certainly feel the frustration of customers whose power remains out. Our hearts go out to them,” Hervey said.

Long Island residents protest as roughly 130,000 still have no power after Superstorm Sandy. (Photo: CBSNewYork)
But he said workers are repairing unprecedented storm damage as fast as they can. About 6,400 linemen and 3,700 tree trimmers are at work, compared with 200 linemen on a normal day.
In Suffolk County, where about 28,000 remain without power, County Executive Steven Bellone announced he was cutting ties with LIPA and would deal directly with substation coordinators.
Hervey said he would not comment on that directly, but added that an ad hoc takeover of the system would lead to anarchy.
“The utility is the best suited to restore power and manage that,” he said. “We can’t have people step in and take over.”
CBS New York has more, including video of the protest:
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for investigation of the region’s utilities, criticizing them as unprepared and badly managed. On Friday, two congressmen from Long Island called for the federal government to help LIPA restore electricity.
“It’s a totally disorganized effort, and LIPA unfortunately seems to have lost control of the situation and that’s why you see so many people becoming so angry,” Rep. Peter King said Saturday.
In New York City and neighboring suburban Westchester County, utility Con Edison said it has restored electricity to 98 percent of homes and businesses. About 20,000 of the utility’s customers remained powerless, down from a peak of more than 1 million.
In New Jersey, less than 85,000 customers were without power Saturday, most along the coast, utilities said. That was down from 2.7 million at the height of the storm. Most were expected to have power by the end of the weekend.
“Where is LIPA for the elderly, the children, everyone? I had my home impacted, my mother and [me] just want help…” one woman said desperately.

Nov. 10, 2012 at 9:53pmRosemary, you may not all be Obama voters, but you have the govt you deserve. You have chosen to live with the great govt and union types all those people love. Even then you could still be prepared. The only people this affects are those that aren’t prepared. If you are relying on the govt, you are on Obama supporter.
I say they keep the power plant shutdown. Wouldn’t want to cause more global warming, right? Who needs electricity, shut down the coal plants. Enjoy Obama’s America!! This is what you wished for.

Nov. 10, 2012 at 9:58pmNow, now. Let’s not get cynical. Your problems due to four more years are not as unmanageable as their myriad problems are today. You can at least afford to be generous in your concern for their plight. Hopefully this example will serve to educate.
Lesson #1: The Government can never fulfill promises of taking care of anyone no matter how much a President is perceived to care.
Lesson #2: Never trust the media again. Attacking Bush for Katrina ( a monstrous disaster more from a local level than a federal) and leaving Obama blameless is indicative only of their lust for power and rigid left wing ideology.
Lesson #3: Three cliches to live by: Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Work as if everything is up to you, Pray as if everything is up to God, and Government is always the problem.

Nov. 11, 2012 at 1:52pmThese people a bunch of spoiled rotten whiners. You never see such impatience and anger when storms hit Florida, Alabama, Louisiana (except for Katrina because they had such horrible leadership), Mississippi or Texas. When storms do this much damage, it takes a very long time to recover.
When Ike came through 4 years ago, some areas were without electricity for a couple of months … in extremely hot weather. It was awful, but we knew everyone was working 24/7 to get electricity to us. Did you see any of us on the TV whining??? No … you saw us patiently waiting in long lines and working to help each other. Did we run out of food? Yes Did we run out of gas? Yes Did we run out of patience? No I guess conservatives are much stronger resourceful people and know that whining just makes things worse.

Nov. 11, 2012 at 3:21pmHaving overcapacity in repair crews cost money that the Citizen Utility Board (CUBs) & their type won’t allow.
The CEO is not to blame. Arrest, try, convict & sentence the people on the CUBs.
CUBs are part of the left. On one hand CUBS want to keep rates artificially low. On the pother hand enviruMENTAL people like Obama want rates artificially high to promote green or energy. You can’t have both with the way liberals are going at it without a great deal of pain.
New York elected Obama. You get Obama. Obama as an Illinois senator never passed up a photoshoot for clean coal (CO2 sequestration). He would do a fair amount of jawboning too. Since he has been elected President have you heard him say one word that you remember about clean coal?
Obama wants are high electricity rate with near zero profit margins. A company under that kind of stress is not going to grow, be resilient or engage in much research. How is such a company going to be able to aggressively respond to a disaster.
Well … like this.

Nov. 11, 2012 at 4:55pmRosemarywoodhouse, thank you. I live on the so shore of Long Island. My home was flooded, the roof blown off, heat and hot water is off and it is cold, very cold some nights. I just got power back last night, but still no heat, not hot water from my gas heater until the power company inspects it and that will have to be replaced as well, no doubt. the furnace needs to be replaced and there is at least a two week wait for that. Gas lines have been hours long.
None of this bothered me as much as Obama winnning a second term. I can hardly keep from crying when I wake up each morning and have that pop into my head. I can deal with the storm Sandy, but not the Obama nightmare that will last beyond the next 4 years. The storm hit Oct.29th, the only thing that kept me going was election day was coming and we would have a real President. I feel like I have been punched in the stomach.
Yes, many people here a behaving like babies, they are all Obama voters :). My area was destroyed and some people don’t understand that it can not be fixed overnight. I am ashamed at the abuse the workers have to listen too. And I can not stand Gov. Cuomo complaining about LIPA not being prepared. The state should have made sure LIPA had a plan before the storm hit! Guess the president taught him how to pass the buck.
But please stop hating on all of NY, we tried sooo hard and worked long hours trying to get the vote out for Romney. Not enough votes to fight NYC voters. So

A couple of tubs full of survival supplies packed and ready to load for a longer evacuation if needed. Of course this is in a state where they have voted to hand even their own self defense over to the government, so why should I expect them to bother to have food, potable water, emergency shelter (tent and sleeping bags) water filter, batteries, flashlights and propane stove with fuel packed for emergency use? Nov. 10, 2012 at 11:40pm@ Read, and that is why spelling is important. None of those little thugs would have been able to discern your joke even if it was written down in front of them. They all deserve to be put through the ringer. They’ve been milking the September 11 attacks and they even got me to go to a foreign nation to fight an unnecessary and unwinnable war against some foreign religious zealotry that in retrospect with more information, doesn’t look like what it did when I was in high school watching thousands lose their lives live on the news in my history class.
