University Pres. Scolds Students for Inviting Ann Coulter to Speak: ‘Disappointed’ Would Be ‘Tremendous Understatement’

Fordham University President Writes Letter After College Republicans Invite Ann Coulter | Rescind Invitation

American universities are often criticized for their left-leaning biases, but the president of Fordham University in New York appeared to take it a step further when he singled out the young Republicans on campus.

The group “College Republicans” had invited well-known author and columnist Ann Coulter to speak, and President Joseph M. McShane expressed his thoughts in a university-wide email, according to Young America’s Foundation (YAF).

It should be noted that Coulter’s appearance was to be paid for by the school’s student activity fees, but the president still made it seem as though the school deserved tremendous praise for allowing free speech by a conservative firebrand.  In the end, though, Coulter’s invitation was still rescinded, the university’s website says.

Here is part of the November 9th email, via the YAF (all subsequent emphasis added):

…Student groups are allowed, and encouraged, to invite speakers who represent diverse, and sometimes unpopular, points of view, in keeping with the canons of academic freedom. Accordingly, the University will not block the College Republicans from hosting their speaker of choice on campus.

To say that I am disappointed with the judgment and maturity of the College Republicans, however, would be a tremendous understatement. There are many people who can speak to the conservative point of view with integrity and conviction, but Ms. Coulter is not among them. Her rhetoric is often hateful and needlessly provocative-more heat than light-and her message is aimed squarely at the darker side of our nature.

McShane then references a number of racist incidents that occurred on campus, before concluding:

Still, to prohibit Ms. Coulter from speaking at Fordham would be to do greater violence to the academy, and to the Jesuit tradition of fearless and robust engagement. Preventing Ms. Coulter from speaking would counter one wrong with another. The old saw goes that the answer to bad speech is more speech. This is especially true at a university, and I fully expect our students, faculty, alumni, parents, and staff to voice their opposition, civilly and respectfully, and forcefully.

The College Republicans have unwittingly provided Fordham with a test of its character: do we abandon our ideals in the face of repugnant speech and seek to stifle Ms. Coulter’s (and the student organizers’) opinions, or do we use her appearance as an opportunity to prove that our ideas are better and our faith in the academy-and one another-stronger? We have chosen the latter course, confident in our community, and in the power of decency and reason to overcome hatred and prejudice.

When the College Republicans rescinded their invitation to Coulter, saying they didn’t “vet” her properly, McShane said the university had passed its challenge “with flying colors.”

Here is part of his follow-up letter, via The Observer:

Allow me to give credit where it is due: the leadership of the College Republicans acted quickly, took responsibility for their decisions, and expressed their regrets sincerely and eloquently. Most gratifying, I believe, is that they framed their decision in light of Fordham’s mission and values. There can be no finer testament to the value of a Fordham education and the caliber of our students.

Yesterday I wrote that the College Republicans provided Fordham with a test of its character. They, the University community, and our extended Fordham family passed the test with flying colors, engaging in impassioned but overwhelmingly civil debate on politics, academic freedom, and freedom of speech.

We can all be proud of Fordham today, and I am proud to serve you.

What, pray tell, ARE the university’s “mission and values”?
Perhaps the Jesuit faculty members would like to comment on that one.
Might I suggest that Col. West take her place? Yeah, I’m thinking that’s not an option either.

The Jesuits birthed Liberation Theology. They distorted the gospel of Jesus Christ and converted their flocks into Marxist followers. They will rot in the pit, together with Marx, Obama and all the other commies, whose purpose in life is to lie, kill, steal and destroy. I find McShane’s email repugnant too.

The Fordham Republicans are simply demonstrating that they are learning their “how to be modern day Republicans” lessons well as continually displayed by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in the Senate and Speaker of the House John Boehner — talk a tough game, then roll over and beg to have their belly scratched so the won’t be ostracized from the big government community. If they are really taking to heart the establishment Republican leadership as role models, they also either licked the college President’s hand, or more than likely, his patootie.

Perhaps the president of the once Jesuit university would have been more happy if the young Republicans had invited Calypso Louie or Rev. Wright. Whatever would he have done had they invited a Moslem Republican to the campus? A university open to the free exchange of ideas as long as the ideas fit into the meme preached by Obama.

      @ Do not panic

That was my immediate reaction as well. The college republicans must have come under considerable pressure to immediately rescind the invitation. And the reason that “we did not properly vet a potential speaker for Fordham University” doesn’t make any sense.

Far more telling is the statement “We have decided that it was in our best interest to cancel the event”.

This, coming as it does from a university, is a frightening event. Does anybody now wonder why those young people in a previous clip would vote for Mr Obama despite knowing almost nothing about their nation’s problems or politics?

It would be fair to say, I think, that this university is a production line for useful idiots.

This is the beginning of the commie consolidation phase. It starts by silencing the more vocal opponents, such as Coulter. Beck would not be welcomed at the university either. Mind you, there is no need for violence. Listen to what this commie bully said:

=> “I fully expect our students, faculty, alumni, parents, and staff to voice their opposition, civilly and respectfully, and forcefully.”

He is rallying the entire university against this one group of students. If the students had stood their ground — which doesn’t happen when the school authorities are coming down on you like a ton of bricks — Coulter would have been mic checked.

Every American should protect our constitution from all enemies! including domestic ones. One thing I know is no army can come to any country and just take it. A people protecting their home and the freedoms that where given to them will be more difficult to take then some think. All those gun toting, bible holding people, make sure your guns and ammo are in different places. Have your give away guns so you can give the federal police something. Make sure you have a long range hunting rifle, like a 50 cal if you can afford it with a scope. This weapon is the most effective weapon against an invading (animal). Lets let the left continue to depend on the police to protect them and we can protect ourselves. Those rich in California and NYC will be one of the first people the government will start taking money from. These people will just hand it over thinking the government knows best. Here take my money, take my guns, what train should I get on? OK?

So, if the College Democrats had invited Van Jones to speak, that would have been all right, correct? What a useless empty suit is Fordham’s president.

When a conservative doesn’t want to listen to someone, they leave. When a liberal doesn’t want to listen to someone, they prevent others from listening.

      @ABRAHAM
That was really good. You remind me of Fletcher (Liar, Liar):

Miranda: Well, what do you think of him?
Fletcher: He’s a pedantic, pontificating, pretentious bastard, a belligerent old fart, a worthless steaming pile of cow dung, figuratively speaking.
