JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) — Stories of the massacre came, one by one, over a live video link from Afghanistan into a military courtroom outside Seattle: torched bodies, a son finding his wounded father, boys cowering behind a curtain while others screamed “We are children! We are children!”

As the Afghans recounted the horror that left 16 dead in the darkness early on March 11, the U.S. soldier accused of carrying out the rampage sat quietly in the courtroom.

At one point, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales moved closer to a large monitor showing the testimony. At other times, he watched as it played on a laptop screen in front of him. Either way, he gave no discernible reaction to the stories he heard.

Speaking through an interpreter, one Afghan closed his remarks with the words: “My request is to get justice.”

The hearing at Joint Base Lewis-McChord is meant to help determine whether Bales, 39, will face a court-martial in the deaths of the seven adults and nine children. He could face the death penalty if he is convicted.

Bales, an Ohio native and father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., has not entered a plea and was not expected to testify. His attorneys have not discussed the evidence, but say he has post-traumatic stress disorder and suffered a concussive head injury while serving in Iraq.

The hearing, which began last Monday, was held overnight Friday to accommodate the Afghan witnesses.

They recounted the villagers who lived in the attacked compounds and listed the names of those killed, to provide a record of the lives lost. The bodies were buried quickly under Islamic custom, and no forensic evidence was available to prove the number of victims.

The youngest witness was Sadiquallah, a slight boy of about 13 or 14 whose head rose just above the back of the seat he was sitting in. With his ears sticking out from beneath a white cap, he described being awakened screaming that an American had “killed our men.”

He said he and another boy ran to hide in a storage room and ducked behind a curtain. It provided no protection from the bullet that grazed his head and fractured his skull. Sadiquallah said the shooter had a gun and a light, but he could not identify the man.

The other child was hit in the thigh and also survived. He is scheduled to testify Saturday night.

As those two were hiding, Sadiquallah’s older brother, Quadratullah, sought refuge with other children in a different part of the house. When the gunman found them, Quadratullah testified, the children scrambled, yelling “We are children! We are children!”

The boys’ father, Haji Mohammed Naim, was the first person shot at the home. He testified that he was awoken by shots and dogs barking. He asked his wife to light a lantern, and saw the shooter climb over a compound wall.

“He jumped from the wall, and I just saw the light on his head,” Naim said. “He just started shooting me.”

Asked how close the gunman was to him when he was shot, the thick-bearded Naim gestured toward a water bottle on the table in front of him, less than an arm’s length away: “He was as close as this bottle.”

One older son, Faizullah, recalled being awoken by someone telling him there had been a shooting at his father’s compound. He rushed there to find him with a gunshot wound to the throat. One of Naim’s daughters was also wounded, as were two neighbor siblings.

Faizullah said he loaded the wounded into a car, using a blanket to lift some of them. They were treated at a nearby base, then flown to a bigger military hospital in Kandahar. All five survived.

Khamal Adin, who had a beard and was wearing a turban, sat at the witness table with his arms folded, his head tilted to the left. He described the carnage at the second village, Najiban.

The morning after the rampage, Adin said he arrived at a compound belonging to his cousin, Mohammed Wazir. Wazir had been away on a trip, and he found Wazir’s mother lying dead in a doorway, a gunshot to her head.

Further inside, Adin said, he found the bodies of six of his cousin’s seven children, the man’s wife, and other relatives. The fire that burned the bodies was out, but he said he could still smell smoke.

When Adin began to testify, Bales moved from his seat to be closer to the courtroom monitor.

Adin was asked if he could say he personally saw the bodies. He answered: “Yes. I have seen each individual and took them out by myself.” Asked to describe the injuries, he said: “Everybody was shot on the head. … I didn’t pay attention to the rest of the wounds.”

Prosecutors say Bales broke his shooting rampage into two episodes, attacking one village, returning to the base and then departing again to raid another.

In between his attacks, he woke a fellow soldier, reported what he’d done and said he was headed out to kill more, the soldier testified. But the soldier didn’t believe what Bales said, and went back to sleep.

Dressed in green fatigues, two Afghan National Army guards recounted what they had seen in the pre-dawn darkness outside the base the night of the killings.

One guard recounted that a man had arrived at the base and did not stop even after he asked him three times to do so. Later in the night, the second guard said, he saw a soldier leave the base – laughing as he went.

They did not say the soldier was the same person nor did they identify him as Bales.

Many of these Afgans cheered as the twin towers crashed. Muslim suicide bombers routinely kill innocent civilians, including children. And of course there has been plenty of Afgan “security” forces turning on U.S. soldiers.

Apparently they don’t like when their tactics are used against them.

  Your analysis of civilian law may be correct , but is it correct to a soldier on the battlefield . Isnt war by any description mass murder ? At what point is it ok to send our troops to do battle , and then for what we have asked them to do , does it become mass murder. When Sgt Bales joined the Military , he was married , father of two children living the life you and I take for granted. When he joined to kill bad guys who threatened his family and country , after 911 , he had no idea what a life changing event he has chosen to do …Do you have any idea how hard it is to look an enemy in the eye , knowing he has a family and is fighting for what he holds dear , knowing in a moment , that if you dont kill him , he will kill you , then pulling the trigger. This happens over and over again in the war zone , it does get easier but not for the reasons you think . These experiences change you ,it makes you hard inside , ask the family of a returned battlefield veteran .You start to react , out of instinct , instead of humanity , after watching your closest friends get killed around you daily . Some can readjust back into civilian life , I was one of those , it took five years and a wonderful wife , many never recover . So before you judge him as a murderer , imagine yourself on the battlefield , and wonder ,would you be able to deal with experience he has faced. I hope this gives you a little incite into an experience , I hope you or anyone close to you , never has to experience

  The whole thing sounds unlikely. I do wonder though if he snapped. Repeatedly seeing your friends come back dead and maimed from IED’s while the townspeople just look on as the bomb is planted and used. Then the bases routinely are hit by mortars and rockets from the surrounding cities. Add to that the back shooting by the so called Afghan security forces. It wouldn’t surprise me too much if an entire base snaps and out and kills everything that moves within 10 clicks. If we had fought WWII the way we fight wars these days (soldiers have to drive around getting picked off without any response) everyone would be speaking German and every Jew in the world would be a lampshade.

Every war needs someone to blame , to wash the politicians hands and relieve their guilt for the crimes they them selves have created . I am a Vietnam Veteran , and was in country when sgt Calley was convicted of similar war crimes. If you were not there you wouldnt understand , not being able to tell the civilians from the enemy . The civilians were used as shields , and too afraid of being killed by the VC , to expose the VC dressed and hidden among them . While you were showing kindness , the enemy shot you from within the crowd. Some of you posters need to have your heads re screwed on right. This was not a military action but a murder spree. Collateral damage is one thing but murder is different. Americans are neither Arabs (Afghanistan is not an Arab country) nor do they embrace the barbarity of Islam. Too act like them makes us them. Have no fear for God will judge Allah and all those who bow to him. Perhaps this was a tragic consequence of PTSD and a confusion, I don’t know, but too condone the actions and even encourage such makes you that which you condemn.

  Sure glad Nidal Hasan is able to hold off his day in court, after he planned and executed said plan, killing 13 people and wounding 24 more on US soil with witnesses in 2009, because he won’t shave his beard. Amazing that the actual enemy attacked us on our soil in the name of Jihad and isn’t, nor will he, hang from the highest tree.

THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO FIGHT A WAR.
It is unconditional surrender.
In this case, with Muslim terrorists it means that the Muslim faith must surrender unconditionally or die, perish, cease to exist in those who have chosen to accept it, believe in it, submit to it, surrender to it.
If we are not prepared to fight that war, if we think it is too big for us then get the hell out of there and let the damn Russians take it and kill/enslave those “F”ing stupid ass Arabs.
Frankly, since the Muslim faith if based on fear and control then it will die as more and more Muslims die and see that the faith is hopeless and lead only to death and destruction through endless carpet bombing. These “people” will shove children in front of convoys in an attempt to stop the vehicles, so they can then murder everyone in the convoy. All I have ever know of islam is murder and misery. If they ever manage to murder every non muslim, they would then proceed to murder each other. Let’s just say this in plain and simple language so there is no misunderstanding. They want to exterminate us like insects, and they will murder their own kids for propaganda trying to get the job done.

Maybe I have just become too wary of any and all accusations made against our men in uniform. I didn’t believe the earlier accounts of what happened that night in Afghanistan and I still don’t.

Were there people killed? Maybe. Did this American soldier do the killing or was it someone in an American uniform or are these just more Muslim lies?

Will Sgt. Bales be found guilty? Without a doubt. In New America he is expendable as long as it placates Isamic sensibilities.

  I remember Obama saying that Bush created $4 trillion in debt over 8 years, and that was unpatriotic, yet after less than 4 years of obama, we have $5.5 trillion in obama debt… yet somehow it is still all bush’s fault, right pantsload?
