Israel Fires Warning Shots into Syria in Response to Errant Shell Landing

For the first time since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Israeli forces on Sunday fired over the country’s northern border to Syria as a warning after a mortar shell fired from Syrian territory exploded in the Golan Heights, officials say.

The Israeli newspaper Ynet reported the Israeli Defense Forces Artillery Corps fired at a post in Syria in response. On Thursday, three Syrian mortar shells struck in and around an Israeli village in the Golan Heights.

The IDF vowed in a statement, “Further attacks [from Syria] will illicit a vigorous response,” the Jerusalem Post reported.

A longer statement posted on the IDF spokesman’s website read:

A short while ago, a mortar shell hit an IDF post in the Golan Heights adjacent to the Israel- Syria border, as part of the internal conflict inside Syria. No damage or injuries have been reported.

In response, IDF soldiers fired warning shots towards Syrian areas.

The IDF has filed a complaint through the UN forces operating in the area, stating that fire emanating from Syria into Israel will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity.

According to the Post, IDF officials believe the Syrian shell fell over the border unintentionally due to the ongoing fighting between the forces of President Bashar Assad and opposition forces trying to oust him.

The errant shell caused no injuries or damage to property.

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai believes there were no casualties on the Syrian side from the warning shots.

The Jerusalem Post quoted an unnamed source who said, “This was a signal to the Syrians that we will not be so forgiving of everything that lands in a territory.”

Brig. Gen. Mordechai told the Times of Israel: “We have no interest in getting in between the rebels and the Syrian army, but to defend the Golan Heights from stray fire.”

Earlier on Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in an interview with Army Radio that Israel would respond to further incidents of explosives hitting the Golan Heights, which is home to both Jewish and Druse Arab residents.

“The message has certainly been relayed. To tell you confidently that no shell will fall? I cannot. If a shell falls, we will respond,” Barack said.

The Jerusalem Post further reported:

At the Sunday cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that Israel was closely following events along the Syrian border, and was prepared for all possibilities on that front.

Israel told Syrian President Bashar Assad on Saturday to rein in attacks on rebels near the Golan, which had been mostly quiet for decades.

The Thursday mortar at Moshav Alonei Habashan was one of three Syrian mortar shells that struck the Golan that day, marking a significant deterioration of security conditions along the border.

All of this rasies concern that the Syria conflict could expand to neighboring countries, leading to a wider conflagration.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six Day War. In 1981, Israel annexed the territory, placing it under Israeli law, but Syria has always insisted it wants the territory back.

  Could this be a sign that Christ will soon be coming for his Church? With the last election and the current spiritual condition of the world it may be. Iran which in the Bible is called Persia has it’s own demon called the Prince of Persia, it is destined to make war with God’s chosen people Israel. When Israel fires warning shots (which by definition aren’t intended to hit anything) in response to the same occurrence on their border their being an aggressive warmonger. I noticed you didn’t seem to find Hamas firing rockets into Israel again to be of any interest.
  
  You have a clear double standard when it comes to Jews and Israel. If you’re going to continue to hold Jews to a different standard than the rest of the world then I will have no choice but to continue to call your antisemitism for what it is. In your eyes, only Israel isn’t allowed to respond when mortar shells land behind their border. Only Israel isn’t allowed to defend itself from enemies that have clearly stated their desire to exterminate them. Iran is a rusty nail in the heart of the middle east that is exporting it’s poison everywhere. They must be eliminated before they add nuclear to their exports.

At one time, I thought of Obama as a modern example of Neville Chamberlain but now I’m beginning to think of him as using the Chamberlain mask to hide a much darker presence. In the past several weeks I’ve read many times of people saying Obama is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This is not an accident… look up the symbol of the Fabian Society as that is their logo. In many ways the Fabians are more menacingly malignant than the Communist. If Israel does not move against Iran soon, they will suffer another holocaust.

  He’s using OUR tax dollars (that’s why he wants to increase taxes) to provide the weapons the Syrian rebels (al-Qaeda) need to fight Assad. That’s why Ambassador Stevens was killed. Stevens was the conduit in getting the weapons and al-Qaeda members (with the help of Saudi Arabia, the home of the worst form of Islam, Wahabism) to Syria, from Libya, through Turkey, to Syria’s rebels. Ironic that Turkey was firing on Syria a few weeks ago, because of artillery landing in Turkey, the same thing that happened today in the Golan Heights of Israel. Syria isn’t going to be a country much longer, IMO, Isaiah 17 is on the verge of being fulfilled.

And fortunately, he did it without any request to congress as is the law, so when it all does come back and backfire on him, he won’t be able to blame Bush. I have difficulty seeing Israel not kicking A** soon. No country is as well prepared to go to the mat with the evils of danger to them as Israel. Be it their enemies of religion or industrious prosperity, they stand far above their region in freedom and tolerance for all residents unlike their neighbors. I agree, America will be slow to respond to Israel’s wants as long as we have a Marxist in the White House and a Democrat senate.

  That petition is from a few citizens, NOT the Lousiana statehouse. They have woefully too few signature to even illicit a response from the White House, and on top of that, those citizens have the right to give up their citizenship, NOT to cause their state to secede. The state itself (read: its lawmakers) would have to do the actual seceding. When a state decides to secede, the federal government would have no option beyond negotiation or outright assault to stop it from doing so. The whole idea of asking the White House to approve of it would only carry weight if the citizens of that state forced their lawmakers to choose to vote for a secession. These petitions are silly at best. Those voters need to get in the ear of the politicians, or replace them outright with secessionists. By the way, I can almost guarantee you that such an action would result in A.) Martial Law imposed by the Federal Government B.) Full on military action on the part of the U.S. Government to quell the secession. C.)Economic sanctions as you see imposed on foreign countries as well. That is why in the actual civil war, there was a group of states that seceded and formed their own country, and we saw how well that worked out for them.

The world is rapidly escalating into a very perilous place. The era of relative peace and prosperity of post-WWII is swiftly drawing to a close. And the US will not be spared either.
We have taken our peace, our prosperity, and our liberty for granted for so long that the majority of Americans no longer recognize the threats to them. One of the greatest is the man who resides in the White House.
The economy is rapidly degrading, the higher taxes coming Jan 1st will push us toward recession (as will the cost of Sandy), our debt is reaching the point of causing a collapse in the financial markets within the next year or two, and bellicose talk — now action — in the Mid-East is rapidly escalating toward war.
Get prepared, Americans. Your period to peace and prosperity are coming rapidly to a close.
Repent or suffer terrible consequences!

Syria’s war keeps edging into Israel. The Israelis now know that they will not have America’s support since Obama was reinstalled. They will do what they must to protect themselves.

Iran via Syria is trying to provoke a violent response from Israel. In this manner they can claim a form of moral high ground to unite the Arab world behind them and Syria as any retaliation will be declared as ‘proof’ of Israel being behind all the problems for Assad.
