We’ve uncovered comments from conservative Justice Scalia talking about the idea of secession. You can read his thoughts on the issue here.

Liberals often like to compare President Barack Obama to former President Abraham Lincoln. The comparison is usually dismissed as laughably hagiographical, but judging by one unexpected bit of fallout from Tuesday’s election, it could well end up being accurate in just one respect: Like Lincoln, Obama is facing requests by the citizens of numerous states to secede from the union.

However, unlike with Lincoln, these requests are peaceful, and highly unlikely to do anything at all except generate news headlines. A massive number of petitions are currently circulating on Change.org, a website designed to call for action by the federal government or by private institutions on particular causes, calling for particular states to be granted permission to secede.

Nor are they confined to the usual suspects (IE the Southern States). In actuality, the mix of states asking to secede is deeply bipartisan, ranging from the deeply red (Alabama and South Carolina) to the deeply blue (New York) to the swing (Pennsylvania). Nor are the states asking to secede in any way geographically clustered. Northern states (New York), Midwestern states (Michigan), Southern states (Alabama) and Western states (Nevada) have all filed petitions of their own. Most swing states this election cycle, with the exception of Ohio, have a petition of their own, and all of them have at least 1,000 signatures, with even some of the bluest states in the union easily keeping pace with their red counterparts.

Is this simply the product of a few thousand discontents in each individual state? Perhaps. But Texas’ petition has over 40,000 signatures, well over the 25,000 necessary to reach the attention of the President. If this turns out to be more than the discontented murmurings of a single state, this story may get ugly.

      I don’t live in Texas but I would encourage Texans to rally everyone they can in their state as Texas leads the charge!!! Hopefully more states can also get 25,000+ signatures!!

      The only problem I have with that is I live East of the Mississippi River, in Mississippi. Give ‘em everything North / East of the Mason – Dixon line. (they seem to like urban areas better anyway).

      You’re going to leave us stuck with California. Thanks, but NO. Make those dividing lines the Appalachians and the SIerra Madre, with the new Republic of Gadsden taking a piece of the state of Sonora to allow for a west coast port. the Constitutional Convention should be very interesting. Also don’t center the capitol in one city, but divide it in three, to prevent the creation of a federal cesspool like we have now. Technology easily makes it possible.

      I think this is great news!! Some of my fellow “Paulbots” disagree, but that is what is great about Liberty.
      You say “great one side will be ignorant liberals, the other side ignorant conservatives” but that would not be a bad thing, because it would put a damper on the two party system…and it would show that yes the government does belong to the people…there would be separation at first and both sides will know for sure that they can not continue governing the way they are….Heck even if secession doesn’t happen, the action of these petitions speaks volumes!!!!!

      All we need is TERM limits. Here in Oklahoma we willlose Tom Colburn – a man hated by both parties because he isn’t a career politician. He pointed out thge Bridge to Nowhere by Dead Ted – a Republican. We need limits of 2 terms or 8 years. Hillery Clinton spent 90 million to win that seat in NY and didn’t even serve.       That was sort of my thought too. If all the states want to succeed, isn’t easier to just get rid of the “bad guys & girls” who don’t want to play by the principles of our founders? It wasn’t easy for them either. They were split down the middle too (strong fed govt vs maximum liberty).

      It appears the numbers of people calling for this action are incredibly small. Is this the minority who rights are protected under the Constitution? I wonder.

      Here we are with the “let’s divide” thing again. Nothing like division to keep a country together. I’d rather divide along lines of stupidity. Well, that’s not good either ’cause I might be on the side I don’t want. lol

If California or Massachusetts wants to go full on communist they should knock themselves out.       States on the east, west and Gulf coasts would have access to the ocean and overseas markets.
      But what about land-locked States once they become ‘independent countries’?
      Do they erect walls to keep others from using their portions of FEDERAL INTERSTATES?
      Do they have to pay ‘a foreign country’ to travel their roads and use their ports?
      When a hurricane or other natural disaster strikes – HOW would they get supplies and how would the residents survive in – lets say a drought or massive wildfire in a ‘water-shortage’ state??
      Where would these land-locked states get their power (in states which have no coal or refuse to use renewables) or gasoline (in non-productive states) or water (in desert areas)?

      GREAT IDEA to secede – Right??? Riiiiiiiight!!!!!

SC has BMW, Military Weapons manufacturers, metals manufacturing, Boeing, Force Protection, Cotton, Wine, Whiskey, Mineral resources (to include gold mining), Army, Navy, Marines, Navy Seals, Coast Guard, Air force base, Missile base, Missile manufacturer, 4 medical Schools, religious conservative universities, Mountains and forests on the right side of the warm currents that provide drought free crops. We have the benefits of all the other states and many things no other states have.

      Since this is on a government site, and I’m a fan of history, I’m very supicious. The reason I say that is you have to couple this article with one that said even third world dictators didn’t get 99-100% of the vote like Obama did in some districts in Pennsylvania and Ohio. I’d be worried that everyone who signed this petition would be rounded up and executed, publically. That being said, I can’t wait to see the look on my aunt’s face (who is a STONG Obama supporter) if Arkansas did secede. We’d have to have a massive exchange of people, letting those liberals move INTO Obamanation, and the conservatives out.

      This morning Beck was going on about how stupid it was for people to sign these secession petitions, because the signers are giving Obama names for his enemies’ list. I thought about that before signing the Texas petition and decided I would rather die standing for what I believe in than live on my knees. Beck, since you’re living in TX now, you need to grow a pair. In some senses, America is a bunch of cowards and if people had been as gutless in 1776, we’d be speaking with funny accents right now and spelling “color” with one too many letters.

We have been wanting to get out of here for some time now. If there was ever a better time to get the heck out of California, NOW would be the time! It would be a wonderful thing if conservatives would/could pack up and leave this state to all the brain-dead liberals. Let them live in the cesspool they have created. California is beautiful! Obama can be the president of those who do not follow the constitution, and as states get fed up with Obama they can join us signing a statement they will now and forever follow Our Constitution.       Actually , seceeding from the union will bring the American debt doewn from 16 trillion deollars to zero dollars. This is probably a lot easier to do then to rely on our politicians to control costs. Therefore even California and Illinois will start with a clean slate. As long as the states act like Europe and use a common monetary unit, a common armed services and have no restriction to travel between the states, this could be the easiest way to solve our debt problem.

      Nooo, the Liberals are on the west coast and the north/northeast! We don’t want those areas. How about we waiting a year, suck up as much federal money to rebuilt our infrastructure and schools, and THEN we secede from the union…stick them with more debt. They won’t even notice it.       Yes, and we can do like other countries, when illegals are identified, Jail them and ship out of the country. If you are in foreign country with out proper papers you pay through the nose and still get shipped out or do jail time until someone bails you out. To work in a foreign country you must have papers to work. This would be politically correct! Secure our boarders, keep them out of our states, and don’t let Obama dictate to us. If they are illegal they have no rights to vote or welfare or any other government services. Problems solved.

      Actually seceeding would cause the national debt to go from 16 trillion dolars to zero. Even California would get a new lease on life. Like Europe keep a common currency, a common armed services and no restriction to travel between the states, and this turns out to be a blessing since our current politicins will never fix the ddebt crises.

      When I saw Louisiana had a petition, I sent this to a disgusted FL e-mail friend. This is my crazy idea:

      If all the red states secede & unite, we’d have a nice big country but WE get to keep the name of the USA. Blue states HATE the USA so they’ll have to be the USSA or whatever they want to call their sissy Communist POC states!!! Don’t know what we’ll do with Colorado & New Mexico stuck right in the middle of our RED states! ALL illegals & “others” will be deported to Mexico OR the blue states since they love criminals & “terrorists”.

      We’ll have to make a “NO FLY ZONE” over OUR new conservative country so I don’t know how the East Coast blue states & the West Coast blue states will be able to travel back & forth…really don’t care! Maybe they could pay us a “toll”, otherwise they’d have to go around the globe to get from one to the other if Canada or Mexico won’t let them fly over!

      ALL progressives living in red states will be deported to the blue states… WE DO NOT WANT THEM or their agenda CAUSING TROUBLE in our NEW conservative country! True conservatives from blue states will be welcome in our red states. We’ll have space after the Libfreaks leave.

      I’m sure Alaska will secede; so we’ll have most of the oil, natural gas, farm & ranch land, the military, nuclear power, coal, etc. We’ll see how long the blue states survive without the red states! They’ve never DONE anything so they’ll probably starve

      Well we could convince enough state legislatures to summon a Constitutional Convention. The dark part could be that in doing so ALL agendas are on the table. We need to be careful what we wish for. On the other hand at this point we are losing freedoms day by day. A shake up in Washington is needed but we will have to work slowly.
      I suggest we take back our schools. Stop the indoctrination of children. Teach them citizenship and the Constitution. That’s how the liberals got control. In some aspects conservatives are getting there. We now have 30 states with a Republican governor, almost as many with a conservative legislature. House Republicans need to go to them and work with them and reach out to Libertarians. Start our own ground operations . Push into the cities s much as possible. We can take our lives back from Washington DC. We must start now. Today.

      The president thumbs his nose at the constitution at his whim and decides that it means something when HE thinks it should. Gee…what’s wrong with this picture? If what it says doesn’t matter with our rights to protect ourselves from the tyranny of a nutty grabby and dangerous government, then I think we should not be influenced by the “no right to secede” . Then, people, are we just subjects of this twisted idea of “government” or do we still have a choice in the matter? I think that 300,000,000 people slightly outnumber the 500 or so in the US government. Those people up there have forgotten who they work for, I do believe! It’s high time for a serious “housecleaning” in DC. They are all running wild up there, and it will not continue for much longer probably. They are all shooting themselves in the foot, & eventually all we the people will have to do is sweep the remains of the trash out the door and let it blow away. All the money made goes either to foreigners who hate us or to the pockets of our so-called “governing bodies”, And THE PEOPLE KNOW IT!!! As a result, people are starving and losing their homes and livelihoods…AND THE PEOPLE KNOW WHY!

      It won’t stay at 50 little countries for long, if history is any guide.

      Also, what really needs to happen is the repeal of the 17th Amendment. Even with popular vote, the House remained in Republican hands, but the much tougher Senate didn’t. States shouldn’t secede, they should assert their power. Reclaim their power to appoint senators through state legislatures. Make the Senate responsive to the needs of the States instead of to a party. The popular vote makes sense when it is so fine-grained like the House is on a district level, not when it represents only the interests of a major metropolitan center instead of all people in a state, as it is in the Senate today.

      Who says we can’t bus some of those folks too, give them refreshments and a real chance of escaping the Democrat plantation. Many college students went to events, and were bussed right to vote. They were probably told that college will be free. Nothing is free when the price is liberty. We can get those voters too. The ones that think Socialism is someone being social! But instead of forgetting them in horrible neighborhoods, they would start businesses and instead of getting a piece of the pie, they will make their own pie.       If the federal government wasn’t interfering with what the states were supposed to do for themselves you wouldn’t have 50 little countries. You would have 50 states united under a federal government that fairly represented those states.       However, just last week, almost everyone voted for the “lesser of two evils”.       I agree with the idea that only property owners or tax payers should vote. In other words, if you don’t have a clue what America is about, don’t tell the rest of us how to do it!!! If you are satisfied taking freebies the country will give you, then it’s time for us to limit those freebies to mere crumbs. This is not a new concept. “He who does not work, shall not eat”.

      Of course in today’s society that will be seen as politically incorrect and establish a whole new segment of social ‘victims’. Those poor “non-voters” !!! They just had a deprived upbringing…they are mostly minorities, so this must be racist….if only we established better educational opportunities for them etc. “The poor will always be with us”.       Instead of everyone wasting their time with petitions to secede, why not petition to repeal the 17th Amendment? Wouldn’t that make more sense? The two senators for each state were originally elected by each state’s legislature, not a general election, and therefore kept each states interest in mind. The 17th amendment changed that. Now both the congress and senate are elected by general election of the people, which is not how our government was supposed to be!

    It’s kind of funny. The last time we were at this point, states were seceding to keep slavery. Now they are kicking around the idea to liberate their people from it.

    Wow, Marx’s concept of “the Negation of the Negation” is in full effect, it only took a full blown Marxist to get us here to witness it.

    I don’t know about you guys, buy Democratic Feudalism (Socialism) or Democratic Slavery (Communism) do not sound like moving forward and making progress to me.

      The C.S.A. was about to outlaw slavery before the civil war ever started. Winners make history. Slavery had nothing to do with it. The south was paying for 80% of the north, and started to put up a fuss about it. The north started taking farms, lands, and eventually raping southern women. John Wilks Booth was one of the most famous actors of his time with a lot to live for. He didn’t kill Lincoln because he was mad about slavery. He killed him because he was a traitor to this country. Slavery was not the primary issue…it would have worked itself out without the war. Replace the word tariffs with the word taxes……and replace North and South with Red States and Blue States and walla, we are back to Lincoln’s time. Strange, we have had 3 presidents from Illinois……two of them have had policies so good that people wanted to secede away from their governance.

      Go to change.org like the article says. I found the petition for Georgia. Looks like I’m only the second one to sign it though.

      It’s a pipe dream….and I do agree with another commenter that we as a nation need to stand together. However, I signed the petition to make a statement; not necessarily to actually secede from the union; but writing my house and senate representatives does not seem to have much effect.

    Listening to all the Republican talking heads, i.e. Bill OReilly, Krystal, these guys need to decide whether or not they need to change parties. We haven’t had a decent Republican candidate since Reagan.

    I live in Alaska and I know a lot of us would love to be separated…We are new to being part of the United States and I am sure that no one would miss us..Hell, most of the people in the lower when asked they don’t know anything about Alaska, where it is or that it is even a state. I think the only thing they know is somebody named Palin ran for office…..The Fed’s don’t even know much about us except we have a valuable resource (OIL) and they want their fare share…

      I too live in Alaska and agree whole heartedly with succession. I live on a small little island in southeast AK tucked away from the rest of the world. Honestly the only thing that reminds the community that we are part of a country is when the government regulates our natural resources. During the Clinton admin we had a pulp mill that employed 8000 – 10000 people year round until he shut it down and everyone packed up their bags and moved off the rock. Then to top it all off he declared a state of emergency for the town giving the ship yard 25 million to pick up the unemployed and do some work for the military and the yard owner pocketed the money didn’t hire anyone and sent a report in saying it couldn’t be done due to our weather. That was that and now our main industry is tourism. We sell our natural beauty to the lower 48 every summer and they take a little with them every year leaving the shops boarded up during the winter and looking like a ghost town. That’s the benefit of being a part of the union???

      Snowshooze – You’re not smart enough to get that TX, AK, LA, and MT have lots of oil reserves. ID, AK, LA, and MT have lots of timber resources. They all have strong agriculture industries. LA and AK have strong fishing industries. And those are industries that are essential to any economy (I doubt that you know that since you know nothing about economics). At least those states aren’t filled with hatethiests such yourself who want to abolish freedom of religion.

    I believe many Americans are fed up with the Liberal agenda and want clean decent normal neighborhoods (without drugs, without gays pushing their ideas, without sex offenders having more rights than you do, without big government telling you what you can and cannot do, without the school system propagating their liberal agenda, without high taxes and without taking our guns away!) Many people are sick of the way the governments stance is. I don’t blame them in wanting a better life style for their kids, better neighborhoods, better schools and safer living standards! I”m so sick of gangs, our schools agenda, our standards being forced gradually lower as time goes! Enough is enough! People need to bind together in certain states and bring back a better life for their families sake! It’s not about discrimination, its about living in a neighborhood where you don’t need to feel threatened by low educational standards, governmental dominance over the peoples will and having the pursuit of happiness! Growth is not up to the government, it’s up to the people and this President is taking us backwards! The Constitution is being slowly taken away as time goes! Let’s restore those rights! I don’t want to live in socialism or communism, nor want to be under the wing of someone who hates colonialism!

      Not Obama specifically but, under his watch, the EPA RPP Lead Paint mandate has made it impossible for me to work on houses built before 1978 without investing thousands of dollars i don’t have or face enormous fines for violating the mandate… I’m a home- repair/ painting contractor and older houses were my specialty and the bread and butter of my business… the guidelines were made by a bunch of suits in a backroom somewhere that have no idea about the realities of actually performing labor….. covering entire houses and yards with 6 mil plastic, miles of blue masking tape, holding areas, shower facilities, EPA approved shopvacs (of which there are only 2), neighbors approval, warning-hazard signs… and i have to pack it up & send my guys home if it gets windy (but pay them anyway)… all to repair and paint some rotten siding… my customers can’t absorb these costs!… they just hire the unlicensed/ uninsured guys to do the work who don’t follow the guidelines in the mandate.. It more than triples the cost of every friggin job for me! I’ve already let go of half my staff and most of my competitors have, too. We are getting killed, here.
      Look it up…. EPA RPP Mandate… Job Killer thanks to Green-on-the-brains morons.

      BTW… homeowners are not subjected to penalties.. only licensed contractors have to comply or else!

      As I see it, the problem on the Petition site is that there are duplicate petitions from a few states. Each has a separate quote of signatures required. That makes NO SENSE! Why didn’t folks from South Carolina and Oklahoma just sign the original petition instead of starting a second? They are defeating their own purposes.

      Plus, it takes all those signatures just to get——”A RESPONSE.” And probably just from some WH flunkie. Or maybe even what? Just a big, flat, flowery NO from the O himself…

      I’d like to think it is an answer, but am doubting it will do anything. Now, VOTER FRAUD, that’s a whole other ballgame if proven! But, then, what do we get? Another RINO?

      The Republican leaders need to get out of the way of those who are serious Republicans, Conservatives, Tea Partiers and some Libertarians. The leadership considers us “nuts” but we’re the ones they come to for money. They pander to us during the primary and forget about us during the actual campaign.

      The Left embraces their freaks setting policies around them. Our leadership is embarrassed of us over on the Right. The Rove’s are the ones who need to change their party. I will not support one more Republican who is a moderate. I did it this time because the stakes were high. But when the stakes are high the leadership caves and ignores us. They lay blame on us.

      Mitt Romney, John McCain, Glenn Beck, all lost this election because a vote for Mitt Romney or John McCain was never a vote for real freedom and even the dumbest liberal sniffed out the underlining oppression spewing from the loser of the 2012 and 2008 elections. Neither candidate showed any interest in individual rights, just states rights and thereby lost a huge number of people who live different lifestyles. A whole bunch of the liberal agenda is not people of the ghetto pushing against the Federal Gov’t but them fending off the States and their conservative police state agenda. If the conservatives would back off at the State level on the issues that affect only individuals rights of choice then they can start to win back the huge number of gay, atheist (as much as I hate to admit them), drug using conservatives I know to exist, (marijuana: do the damn research people and legalize it, quit being SO DAMN STUPID AND HYPOCRITICAL.)

    i wish the founders would have created a government where every state has to decide every 10 years whether to remain in the union….The founders should have made it clear that the union is voluntary

      You want it both ways SOY. You keep saying “we” ended up with McCain and then Romney; There is no “we” in that. Your candidate lost, as did ours and “we” ended up with Obama. I could be wrong, but I don’t suspect the Founders believed that once a tyrannical government was identified to be such, that it would be resolved at the voting booth. I’m still a little baffled why you still post here, saying the same things yet offering nothing. I would not view you as courageous as I see the same level of courage required to vote your principles as to not vote at all. I do see value in applying pressure where it can have an impact, ie GOP Governors and their honoring the 10th Amendment. The secession stuff is a bit nonsensical, after all many that use the word here spell it “succession”. Makes me wonder…

      i am promoting the idea of voting your conscience – as crazy as that sounds. The founders would have wanted it so.

      And I am not thrilled about secession either. It is hypocritical to vote for Romney and then if he doesnt win – act like it is the end of the world. Romney would have done nothing to fix this country

      The Founding Fathers DID make it clear that any State may withdraw; it is the current administration that ignores that fact. Not one State is oblligated to remain in the Union of the States; Lincoln ILLEGALLY called for the War Between the States because he knew the North could not survive without the South.

      @Mabel8, I have to stick up for the Sixteenth President of the United States, here-the reason he called for the Civil War was the Southern States were, in violation of Natural Law and therefore sinfully, keeping slaves. Nothing will budge me from my position, but I WILL say this-the people who are sinfully opposing God, and those on God’s side, have (rather ironically) switched sides.

    Who can blame any of the states for leaving. The federal government is taxing and regulating industries out of existence that are the livelihoods of some states such as the coal industry in West Viriginia and Kentucky.

      Yes and the instant one state does declare its independence or even if Obama feels he can use it as an example, say AZ (my home) he will declare an open state of rebellion and the revolution will be on in full. Understand clearly – I say revolution due to he will have declared his tyranny to the world at that point, and we will face the choice of total submission or victory: there will be no in between.

      I cant blame a single state for leaving and support them. At least they are trying to do what’s best for their citizens. It is time to stop giving all our funds to government handouts, stop living under a tyranny, and time to implement the Constitution our founding fathers put in place for us. I am not sure Obama fully understood the big picture when he decided to steal the election. This is turning into one large and wild roller coaster ride. Amen to those who had the courage to put these petitions together and I am sure that there are thousands as witnessed by Texas who support you. I for one am tired of the government taking my hard earned money and giving it to no good entitlement programs, disregarding the lives of four dead people in Libya, Fast and Furious and the list could go on and on. The Lies are never ending. Shame on the people who voted in hopes of getting free stuff instead of your freedom. You have now become a slave to the system. I know I refuse to be one of those people.

      Why secession is unconstitutional:

      1- The south did not properly seceed. To seceed, it must be put through ALL of the senate. They did not do that.
      2- The Articles of Confederation. Abraham Lincoln stated that the Constitution was a more perfect union than the earlier Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, but that the Articles had established the permanence of the Union in a binding contract. He called any secession “legally void”.
      3- The definition of democracy itself. To be in a democracy, you must work together. The south refused to give an inch, thus they left. That was not democracy, it was just giving up on a system because you refuse to compromise.

      We all know that these petitions will not come to fruitition. It really is just a form of protest and I am glad for it. I wish Romney would fight back at some of this obvious voter fraud…this Administration has a stink about it and I am praying that all the corruption will be exposed. We, the people, need to find ways to tell this foul smelling Administration that we won’t just grin and bear it.
