Racist? See the Controversial Victoria’s Secret Outfit Yanked From 2012 Fashion Show

Native American controversies have become something of a running theme of 2012, it seems.  After it was revealed that newly-elected Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) claimed such heritage on a number of college and job applications, she was even dubbed “Fauxcahontas” by some in the media.

Warren’s tall tales ended up not bothering the majority of Massachusetts residents, but there’s a new Native American controversy on the horizon– and it’s from the last place you would expect.

The annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

Yes, the well-known supplier of women’s garments is under fire for an outfit inspired by Native American heritage, with some shouting cries of “racism.”

Model Karlie Kloss was seen in the fashion show last week with a massive headdress that reached the floor, turquoise jewelry, animal print clothing and tasseled heels.

Here are some pictures from the event:

“Use of the symbols, [culture], art, traditional dress of a culture you don’t care enough to learn about is EXPLOITATION,” one Huffington Post commenter vented.  Another added: “Not only is our Sacred Wabonnet being paraded by a bone thin model wearing a smile and [leopard] underwear, the Squash [Blossom] necklace she wears is Sacred to the Dine Navajo people… Genocide and assimilation continues. We are looking for a heartfelt public apology from VS.”

It wasn’t long before Victoria’s Secret did just that, not only apologizing but pulling the look from future broadcasting and advertisements.

The company said in a statement on Sunday, via The Huffington Post:

“We are sorry that the Native American headdress replica used in our recent fashion show has upset individuals. We sincerely apologize as we absolutely had no intention to offend anyone. Out of respect, we will not be including the outfit in any broadcast, marketing materials nor in any other way.”

Do you think the uproar is understandable, or are people starting to cry “racist” a little too often?

The biggest mistake of the Native American Indians was that they stopped after the Custer incident.

They didn’t “stop”, they were defeated militarily. That’s the hard truth of the matter. Come to accept it.

Honestly, though I personally think the VS models are a bit thin, I have a feeling that some cow at the Huffington Post was jealous as most liberal women easily become, and thus decided to reduce everything to simple accusations of racism. Really? The assault on capitalism continues.. how dare VS be successful with thin models and ridiculous outfits! *smh*

She doesn’t look quite as overly thin as most models these days. She at least doesn’t look like a skeleton with skin. The look of models these days has ruined the confidence of healthy teenage girls.

What a lot of phonies and hypocrites here. Its OK if another culture’s sacred symbols and demeaned but if it is suggested that the same treatment be used on white Christian images like a pope hat instead of war bonnet on an almost naked woman then the post gets taken down within minutes. Big tough guys here can give it but wuss out if they have to take it. ‘Speak Your Mind.’ Ha!

      Straw man.

I have no problem with making fun of Christians, or Jews, or Muslims or any race, creed or ethnicity, whatsoever, including my own particular “group” that, according to modern Soviet Leftism, I mind meld with.

I wonder who actually started the cry of racism. I can’t imagine any (straight) man even noticing what the model is wearing on her head or jewelry she is sporting.

Rubbish. If more Indians had looked that good, they’d have assimilated US. Lord knows, my ancestors weren’t beauty queens by any means. I guess this is the start of something good, though – pretty soon, all clothing will be racist so all women will walk around naked.

Now, if the models just had some more meat on those bones. Good Lord, she looks like a Ukraine famine victim.

Anyone remember the band “The Village People”? Was it ok for them to use the headdress for some reason? I don’t remember any controversy about that when they were popular. Even if the guy is a Native American, which I don’t know, it wasn’t used in a way respectful to such a sacred cultural item. It was more like a joke.

Are the Native Americans complaining about this or just liberal political correct morons? It seems they are going to keep censoring anything related to Native Americans until we never see them again and they become invisible. I love anything Native American and don’t want to see everything disappear because we live in such a sensitive wussified country.

Perhaps everyone should look at the costume that Cher wore in her video for the song “Halfbreed”. Was it rascist then? It doesn’t matter if the model or singer was part Native America or not. Both outfits were not specific to any of the Native American Nations and both were designed to be sexy. Stupid PC Nazi’s can soak your heads in boiling acid and stop trying to censure everything.

I won’t address the racism or any part of the political sides thrown around on here. But I just want to point out the insensitivity we all have lost to tradition, to culture and to the humanity we were once all supposed to posess. Those at VS should have done their homework to recognize the possible offense it may have had including it into their show. And all of you insensitive asses on here should too. We continue to melt down rather than seperate our cultures and traditions to soon become that one world one race society all sides seem to have something to say about. Ok, yeah we are all different but that’s not racism if I recognize it. We should all be celebrating our heritage, what makes us who we are, rather than pointing out our differences and deciding which is the dominant. Live and let live but never forget where you came from. Traditions, values and our heritage should be celebrated, not tear us apart.

      Spare me.

We have Oktoberfest here in central Ohio every year. Lots of German immigrant influence, you see. Of course, we also have the Irish Festival in Dublin (Ohio). Lots of Irish immigrant influence, you see. I suspect you can find Irish descended folks wearing lederhosen and those push up bustier Hot Teutonic Chick dresses, and you can find German descended folks wearing green, playing the penny whistle and tippin’ back a wee dram o’ the water of life. Who cares? Yes, celebrate traditions, agree. Putting on onion thin skins if your “traditions” are even slightly caricatured is silly. Somebody characterizes “your people” in a way you find silly, roll your eyes and say “whatever” and get on with life. Don’t run around demanding others “respect your culture”.

    I am Apache,
It would be totally easy to get upset over this and act like a wank like everyone else does. It quite frankly isn’t worth the time. I in fact find it quite flattering that they would choose to think that Native American Regalia is Fashionable.
Learn to find the silver lining in stuff and stop complaining. the Racist bit is getting old. Plus that chick was kind of hawt.

Well personally I don’t give a crap; I am a tad bit Indian but my as* glows white, and now us “angry old white men” are a minority too! YAY! I finally get to speak out and tell all the other “minorities” to quit whining and act like an efing AMERICANS! We are the melting pot after all.

I think the white people need to band together and start our own tribe, call it the second Native American tribe or something classy like that. It was us after all that fought the most, died the most and actually wrote the constitution of the Us of A. That should count for something right?
