Sunday’s NASCAR Race Devolved Into an All-Out, Fist-Throwing Brawl — Watch It Unfold

AVONDALE, AZ – NOVEMBER 11: Clint Bowyer, driver of the #15 5-hour Energy Toyota, and Jeff Gordon, driver of the #24 DuPont Chevrolet, collide on track during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on November 11, 2012 in Avondale, Arizona. NASCAR’s Sunday race at Phoenix looked more like a WWE wrestling event than a professional car race.
“The sport was made on fights. We should have more fights. I like fights,” driver Kevin Harvick said after the race regarding the mayhem. “They’re not always fun to be in, sometimes you’re on the wrong end, but fights are what made NASCAR what it is.”
He’s talking about the all-out brawl that broke out between legendary driver Jeff Gordon and the crew of Clint Bowyer.
It began as the field closed in on what should have been the final lap and Gordon slowed his car to wait for Bowyer so he could intentionally wreck him as retaliation for several weeks of on-track contact between the two.
After Gordon climbed from his car in the garage, he appeared to be jumped from behind by one of Bowyer’s crew members. It led to a full brawl between the crews, with Bowyer sprinting from his car to join the fracas. Bowyer was held back by NASCAR officials from entering Gordon’s hauler.
And it was all caught on video:
“It’s pretty embarrassing,” Bowyer said. “For a four-time champion, and what I consider one of the best this sport’s ever seen to act like this is pretty ridiculous.”
Both drivers and their crew chiefs were called to the NASCAR hauler for a meeting with series officials, and police officers stood outside on guard.
Gordon said he’s had problems with Bowyer all season and had reached his limit.
“Things just got escalated over the year, and I’d just had it,” he said. “Clint has run into me numerous times, wrecked me, and he got into me on the back straightaway and pretty much ruined our day. I’ve had it, fed up with it and I got him back.”
He said he didn’t know what penalties might be coming from NASCAR.
“They’ve got to do what they’ve got to do, and I guess I had to do what,” he said.
NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said the situation would be looked at further this week.
“That was surely a shame,” he said. “We’ll continue to try to get everybody back calm down and back to a working situation.”

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 12:43pmFirst, Jeff should be parked for a race to remain consistent. They have parked Kurt Busch, Kyle Bush, Michael Waltrip and Robby Gordon for doing the exact same thing.
Second, Na$car will not suspend Jeff for a race as he is one of their chosen. Na$car is almost as scripted as the WWE so don’t get to bent out of shape over anything that happens in this “sport”. I mean how long can anyone watch cars go around in a circle.

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 12:59pmGordon’s been asking for it.He’s done his fair share of damage to other racer’s cars. NASCAR’s gone too PC and commercial since Gordon came into racing. It’s too glamorized with the racing wife/model girlfriend at the finish line. High ticket prices and the same winners over and over. I love the old NASCAR where Petty wouldn’t have put up with it, nor would Earnhardt Sr. They would have smacked pretty boy Gordon down to the ground. Great fight. Sometimes they’re needed. There’s too much money involved now and though Gordon can afford another car, not all drivers can. Gordon’s always been a crybaby, hence the PC of the new NASCAR.

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 10:28amWhat’s is with drivers named Gordon…Robby Gordon did the same thing to Michael Andretti back in the days of CART so when I heard the name Gordon I thought for sure it was him and not Jeff.
This is serious stuff and the penalties should be severe. Doesn’t matter that you’re not at full speed freaky things can happen and someone can get hurt plus you wrecked some expensive cars.

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 10:04amBumping to spin a competitor out should get a loss in position or a time penalty. NASCAR is torn between “liking” this stuff and needing to do something about it. If you watch SCCA sports car racing or Formula One you see infractions are all taken very seriously. To wreck or not to wreck; that is the question.

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 9:28amI have to bash NASCAR for NOT throwing the caution after Danica was turned into the wall. Her car was obviously wrecked, Harvick had not taken the white flag and no caution was thrown. Resulting in a free for all down the front straightway when everyone hit oil. Danica took the brunt even though she hugged the inside down the front. Being RAMMED from the rear by several drivers sending her car into the air. A scary moment.
Jeff Gordon should be treated the same way Kyle Busch was a year ago at Texas when he deliberately wrecked Ron Hornaday during the truck race. PARK HIM for a weekend…too bad it’d be the last race of the season…oh well-

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 9:25amI think any pitcrew member who attacks a driver should be fired. Clint Bowyer drives like an idiot, bullies other drivers, and forgets out on the track they are all the same size. Its a shame goober had to send his pitcrew to rough up a little guy like Jeff Gordon. Any pitcrew member who assaults a driver should be banned from working in NASCAR. Show some respect for a four time champ and get his side of the story, driver to driver, before resorting to fists and dont send your pitcrew to do it. Bowyer was let go from RCR because hes drives like a selfish moron to the detriment of the team.

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 10:00amSorry folks if my comments offend anyone. I was watching football when this happened and havent had a chance to see what really happened in the race that led to the brawl. Just speaking out of anger that a pitcrew would treat a four time champion this way. especially a driver who is NOT known for taking cheap shots on the track, and IS known for being an honest, clean driver.

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 5:21pmAs the Wife of a huge NASCAR fan who watches NASCAR every weekend, I can tell you that Jeff Gordon is far from being innocent, honest or a clean driver. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen Gordon do the bump and run which ended up sending the other driver into the wall or spinning them out. Jeff Gordon has no problem bumping into other drivers to move them out of his way, but if someone does it to him then he does the stupid thing and retaliates. It is NASCAR for crying out loud, there is going to be bumping and rubbing going on when drivers are trying to improve their position on the track, that is what is fun to watch. Sorry but Gordon is guilty of deliberately retaliating against Bowyer and he should be punished for doing so.

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 9:18amGordon was black flagged and was heading to pit road. Boyer just happened to be on the inside as Jeff was turning to go to pit road.
I heard and watched it. Jeff Gordon admitted to doing this intentionally. I am a Gordon fan, but I do not agree with this type of retaliation. There have been many drivers before that pay back and make it look accidental. Jeff just had reached his breaking point and let loose. There is one race left for this season, Jeff has been eliminated from the Championship before this race. Boyer was almost eliminated before the wreck. Nascar wanted to add some excitement, now they have it. The worst penalty will be for Boyer’s crew chief for not keeping his crew in their pit area and going to another pit area. With one race left, who cares about penalties?
