‘Conveniently Occurring After the Election’? Ohio Food Stamp Program Sees Cuts

Hundreds of thousands in Ohio’s food stamp program could see a $50 cut in their monthly assistance starting in January, according to the Toledo Blade. Some consider it ironic that the announcement is coming just a week after the election in this swing state, which was won by President Barack Obama.

Ohio Food Stamp Recipients Will See $50 Cut in 2013

Chart shows the number of federal food stamp recipients since 1971. (Image: AP)

The Toledo Blade reported that with 869,000 households in the program, the cut could add up to $520 million. Here’s the reason for the cut, as reported by the Blade:

Because of the way the federal government calculates utility expenses for people receiving the benefit, a mild winter nationwide last year, and a lower price for natural gas, many families could experience a significant cut in aid, those familiar with the program say.

[...]

What’s called the “standard utility allowance” — the amount deducted from a person’s income when the state determines his or her eligibility for the food stamp program — will decrease by $166 for 2013, translating to about $50 less per household in food assistance. State Job and Family Services officials tried to appeal the change to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the food stamp program, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but the USDA denied the request.

In the comments section of the Toledo Blade article, powered through Facebook, some are questioning the timing of the cuts, just a week after the election in a state that was considered one of the presidential battlegrounds. A commenter named Ra Williams wrote, “Got to like the timing huh? LESS then a week after the election.” Another commenter, Nick Danielson, wrote that the cut seems “conveniently occurring after the election.”

Robert Laurie on Cain TV — Herman Cain’s news site — wrote:

Currently, close to a million impoverished Ohioans collect federal assistance in the form of food stamps.  If the thrust of last week’s election was, as many have argued, a welfare quid-pro-quo, it’s clear these people represented a big portion of the buckeye state’s pro-Obama vote.

I wonder how they’ll react when they find out their monthly check is about to get $50 smaller.

Here’s some of the sentiments being tweeted regarding the cuts:

Ohio Food Stamp Recipients Will See $50 Cut in 2013

Ohio Food Stamp Recipients Will See $50 Cut in 2013

“This is a federal issue,” Joel Potts, executive director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Directors’ Association, said according to the Blade. “It is what it is. They have a formula. … We just think it is going to be really hard on families and individuals. They will see significantly less money starting in January.”

Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, told the Blade the organization is “really worried” about how the cut will impact families, especially those who might lose assistance all together. Several other organizations that provide supplemental food as well were reported as saying this cut would bring a strain on their system and the families they serve.

Tyler Durden from ZeroHedge also recently pointed out that the USDA seems to have delayed its monthly release of the number of Americans enrolled the food stamp program by nine days and didn’t release its August data until last week as well. Durden wrote that this could be why:

One glance at the number reveals why: at 47.1 million, this was not only a new all time record, but the monthly increase of 420,947 from July was the biggest monthly increase in one year. One can see why a reported surge in foodstamps ahead of the elections is something the USDA, and the administration may not have been too keen on disclosing.

Money being p!ssed away on the tilting at windmills endeavor of substance abuse treatment could easiy be diverted to help those in actual need. Hmm… priorities. Which is more important to a collective? Saving the Great American Junky or feeding the needy? As a mental health professional in OH’s neighbor, WV, it’s miraculous how much money is being found to so save the Great American Junky from itself.
What’s REALLY funny is hearing how junkies ‘flip’ their SNAP benefits for cash. Well, at least this will help with that aspect of the ‘war on drugs.’

I am an Ohioan, I have never voted for Obama, never will. When I was told my guy lost, I said maybe so, but worse than that is, ALL OF AMERICA HAS LOST. It was a sad day when they automatically gave Obama the state when all the votes weren’t even in yet. And from what I understand, they won’t be until sometime in Dec. I said this man was out to destroy this country from the day I first laid eyes on him. I still believe this now more than ever.

Yes, and it will move faster, hopefully.

Few things change my blood pressure faster than being caught in the express line with a couple of overpriced items for which I must pay FULL PRICE out of earnings I DID BUILD but which are reduced by 50% due to taxes at Fed & State & Medicare/Soc Sec, etc. and upon which I must pay an additional almost 10% in sales tax (yes, folks, Greecafornia), while a person who often does not speak English has 10 items over the express line limit and is paying with Food Stamps. These are pretty often folks that are guaranteed to have at least two items which do not qualify for Food Stamps – like alcohol, sun glasses, mittens, and lots of other stuff. But I have seen them buy filet mignon with all the trimmings while I’m buying nonfat plain yogurt.

Spare me the enlightened attitude will you?

“I, being more caring and empathetic than the average person, parted company with my more conservative roots. In doing so, I cast my ballot so that men with guns would visit people who have more than most and who produce what we all consume…and those men would extract (under the threat of force) what I have given democratic consent to take. The government will of course take its share, but the remainder will pass to the poor souls that live in the part of town that I won’t frequent for fear of mugging or just generally because it is so distasteful. Feeling full of self adulation, I will now meander to one of those right wing message boards to laud my compassion over them and ridicule them for their silly and arcane adherence to something as foolish as a constitution.”

@ copatriots – Well, most of my family are basically English rednecks, and I live in the USA, so since my grandparents died I’ve been out of touch with them. My parents, as I said, are relatively fiscally conservative, but their social views have evolved to a much more liberal position over the years. It’s really a case of being able to move with the times, and evolve.

If the richer members of society paying a reasonable amount of their wealth to contribute to society, then yes, I agree with government sponsored theft. Definitely a socialist, in those terms, and no shame in saying it. I don’t have a real need for attention – my friends and I get enough of a laugh out of the beliefs exhibited on this forum (that includes most of my more conservative friends, too), and I just come here to put forward my views, much like the majority of patriotic individuals on the forum.

I’m really proud to be living in the USA, happy that I moved here with my American-born wife (she wasn’t too happy in the UK, and she also had her college education to finish up), and am looking forward to becoming a citizen next year.

Smug superiority, friend, isn’t a winning rhetorical tool. This is why you look foolish. Showing us your bleeding wrists and your battle scars of daring to defy a “right” U.K. family is not impressive, sorry. To be “right” in the U.K. is to be on the side that wishes only that IT could run the tram, and not Labour.

With all of your whinging about the “right” and this site, one wonders why you elected to leave Britain?

I’m amazed that anyone from the UK can’t clearly see what happened in their own country that they want the same ruin for ours. Gee thanks, TGS. Oh and please remember this conversation when you’re standing in food lines with rampant food and energy inflation. Your very own Margaret Thatcher explained the end result of socialism. I do wish God’s blessing upon you even though I know it falls on deaf ears. The last word is yours……go for it…..yet another sign of narcissism. Peace.

Ohio is reaping what she sowed. I have to laugh when I see such ‘thankfulness’ from Obama. Keep voting blue…..ohio. You are voting for a snake. What is he going to cut next in ohio?

Exactly – I live in Ohio – can’t wait to see the whining and crying – really can’t wait to laugh and say “hows that hope and change working for you now?”………

      Just sayin………..

Remember when the Obozo’s were threatening to start a riot if Obozo didn’t get re-elected? Like a week ago, these Obozo’s were saying “imma start a riot, if Romney tries to take away my food snaps”

The state of Ohio is red, except for the three C’s (Cincy, Cleveland, Columbus). Those of us not in the middle of the debris of these cities (Cincy and Cleveland are physically revolting) wish nothing more than that these people move to the east coast and never look back.

Ghost, whne diid Cincy go to the dark side? I grew up there, but haven’t been back in 25 years. It was once a bastion of conservatism. I was shocked to see Hamilton Co. go for Obama this time.

Please stop wishing them to move to the east coast. We don’t want them.We want to ship out our obamanoids to another section of the country. One where they actually belong.Where ever that might be.Just not here.

      @Gonzo

They were “right”-ish when you were there, went full frontal neoconservative during the Bush years with a strong urge to control and beat down people except on economic issues, and now they’ve completed the journey and are a southern version of Cleveland I’m afraid.
