Did Obama Win in Landslide? Blue State Creep? 100 Years of Election Maps Will Give You Some True Perspective

Everyone has a perspective on the 2012 election results and a theory about what Obama’s re-election means for both parties.  However, conservatives shouldn’t believe the dooms day assumption that the country has never seen such a liberal turn, and liberals shouldn’t buy the idea that Obama won in a landslide.   Both groups could gain some perspective.  One hundred years of voting history should do.

TheBlaze did some digging and found the county-by-county voting maps for every election since 1900.   We made a video of the results, end to end. The outcome is a fascinating display of our democratic past and gives necessary perspective for the countries unpredictable future.

Before you watch the video below, keep an eye out for some alarming and interesting trends like:

Swing State? How About Swing Country

How the country can change in just four years!  Below are the results of Herbert Hoover’s 1928 victory and the resulting shift to elect FDR just four years later

County By County Election Map of Last 100 Years

The Third Party Effect

A third party has never won the presidency in modern American political history.  However, they did win 88 electoral votes and came in second place in the election of 1912.

County By County Election Map of Last 100 Years

Ross Perot caused some havoc in the more recent elections of 1992.  He did not receive any electoral votes, but he did siphon off 20 million private votes.  (Pink and green signifying counties carried by third parties):

 The Real Mandate Landslide

With the last four elections won on the decisions of a handful of precious swing states, it is astonishing to think of the potential of a true American landslide presidential victory.  But it is possible, and actually quite common!

FDR had a few good ones (523 electoral college votes to 8):

So did Reagan (525 electoral votes to Mondale’s 13):

County By County Election Map of Last 100 Years

But Nixon takes the cake in the geographic landslide category (520 electoral college votes to McGovern’s 17):

Perhaps the moral is what goes around comes around in the American political tradition.  Nothing is a given and trends come and go.  What is most important is that democracy works.

Once again, you poor fools can’t read a map. The map is done by COUNTY. And, if you didn’t know, we don’t vote by county, but by DISTRICT. These maps are deliberately lying to you. Most blue counties have MILLIONS of people in them while most red counties have about 10 people and a few cows. And the cows can’t vote. STOP BEING FOOLED!

Is this taking something away from you somehow? Why are you getting your panties in a wad? Evidently you can’t read an ARTICLE, the electoral college tallies are clearly printed in black and white. I don’t think anyone is being “fooled”, you are presuming that people watching this are coming to a particular conclusion. This is just an interesting article, nothing more. You really need to let go of your preconceived notions about “fools”…

I am going to second Anadara and agree that it’s a good observation but is pointless. (as is your name calling)

Making a map by county just gives you a ‘closer to the ground’ assessment of how the various parts of the country voted. If you really wanted to get technical, and view it by voting district, the map would be a far bigger jumbled mess. (for instance, my county of 10,000 people is broken into about 8 different voting districts)

While not scientific, county breakdown works just fine for visualization purposes. Get over it.

And most of your replies answers my question, that you can’t read a map. Think about this: there are a huge number of blue counties that have many more people in them than many red states.

SPQR1, you seem to be confused with the difference between a Presidential/Senate/ State Representative elections verses State, County and District elections. In a Presidential/Senator election, each District reports vote tallies to the County and each County tallies up all the votes from the Districts to determine who won that County. Each County then reports their vote tallies to the State which then determines who won the State. This is also done when voting for a new Governor in each State. When voting for who is going to Represent you in your State Capital then those are determined by districts as there’s a Representative who represents each voting District. Same goes with electing City officials or Mayor, they are determined by the people who live in those Districts. Do you only vote in Presidential elections because any person who votes whether it is a presidential election or not would understand this.

The fact remains the challenge ahead for the GOP is no different than before. 16 states made up of @ 35 communities elect a president. So, SPQR1, if that is your real name, what you are saying is that during the days of segregation the blue southern states had hundreds of counties, each occupied by millions of Democrats, and afterwards there was a mass migration of these people into the Northeastern counties? You explained to all of us morons that each blue county is occupied by MILLIONS of people. And during the days of lynchings, segregated schools, lunch counters, etc. those blue state were Democratic, and had MILLIONS of Democrats in them? So we can conclude from your PROFESSIONAL expertise that the MILLIONS of Democrats living in each blue county in the deep south were responsible for the racial bigotry and policies that treated people of color like animals? Well, we already knew that.

Most peoples mortgages are nothing more than rent now days. A payment that never ends and if it dose it’s time to get a new house and a new mortgage. What you fail to recognize, as is true with most liberals, is that we are not only capable of reading a map, we can apply that information to real life! The needs and desires of a very small portion of the country, and much of it where there are massive unemployed, are not necessarily the needs and the desires of the rest of the United States, the Heartland! You have California that has cities going bankrupt, you have Michigan, New York and so many other blue spots that have unions which have bankrupted businesses causing massive unemployment and then you have Heartland America, the red on the map, where states are staying afloat, people are working hard to feed their families and to help others in need. Did I mention not only massive unemployment, but massive voter fraud in the SAME areas? Polling stations not allowing Republican poll workers into the polling place until they had a court order and sheriff’s deputies to escort them. Those were also the areas that had incredible turnouts and no or only a few Romney votes. Common sense dictates voter fraud. Add to that the fact the left is fighting against such investigations and even a fool can see this is NOT the part of the country that should be making the decisions for the country!!!!!!!

The difference now is that the Democrat party is totally sold out to Marxism, but decades ago, some people who really love America were democrats, but now they all have selfish motives and are cannibalizing the country. I don’t believe this was a legitimate election. It was rigged to elect obama again, and you could see now all the critical states swung back to Obama at the last part of the vote returns. How convenient. When ACORN and such organizations register fictitious voters, it allows them to create huge ‘voter rolls’ that they can use as needed. The states need to reset the voter registries by requiring everyone to register anew within the next year, or they will expire from the voter rolls. By doing this and not allowing third parties to register ‘voters’, we could clean up the voter rolls to a large degree and it would be harder to cheat.

But truthfully, I’m not sure we can ever have a fair election at this point. It has become a way of making you think your vote counts, when really they will do what they want to.

We have tipped not only fiscally, but politically. My hope is in God alone.

By looking at the maps above, I really don’t think we have flipped. I think Romney lost due to lack of turn out. After Obama leaves office for good, we will have gotten the first black president under our belt, which I see as a good thing, just the wrong person with the wrong policies for this period. Obama being the first black president is why the left has turned out so heavily. Look at 2010 and you see the difference when Obama wasn’t on the ticket. It will flip again and again and again. This is just a short period in our history. Hopefully, after 2016, we will still have a country worthy of being called the USA. And if the ticked is white/white or Latino/white, the left will not turn out like the right. The excitement will be gone. Love those maps though. On a side note; I hope the Tea Party splits from the Republican party. I really think we can get a majority who wants to go back to constitutional conservatism.

If the approx 50,000 people who voted for Johnson in FL voted for Romney it would have been too close and a recount would have been called and in depth investigation into the fraud that had been found. For all of you who voted for Johnson, Congratulations! Because you chose that your pride and dignity about refusing to vote for the lesser evil we have the greater evil still in office. When we lose most of our rights and are forced to obey or die remember your pride in refusing to vote for the beginning of fixing America. Before you try to blast into me tell me on a scale bigger than yourself what has your vote for Johnson accomplished? If you don’t answer this question I won’t reply to you and neither should anyone else in my opinion.

Our whole county, here in SW Ohio, swept the Republican ticket, which it almost NEVER does, so that tells me that at least the Republicans HERE got out and voted.
Now if the Republicans in OTHER places got of of there @$$ and voted, we wouldn’t have another four years of misery. Do you hear me Ohio? We were out-voted!
I asked anybody and everyone I knew, if they needed a ride to vote, but they already did. Republicans just did not get out the vote and I cannot understand why. Perhaps they like living in misery and gridlock.

Fixed it. This is a two way road. Don’t even sit back and act as if all the Neo-Cons you voted for did a single thing to stop the Tide of Government Growth, Tax and Spend, and Police State actions yet you somehow have an Insane idea that Romney would have reversed it all. Insane as in ” Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result “. There is only one group who has the ballz enough to not pander for votes and to do the hard work that will be required to fix the $#!+ storm that BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS HAVE EQUAL SHARE in creating. The Real Liberty Movement. The Libertarians. You are so disillusioned that you have lost the ability to take responsibility for your actions nor can you even see past your own heaping pile of dung and accept that you are wrong. Not sure I fit the criteria, but I’d like to take a stab at this one from a logistical standpoint. But first there is something basic to consider before you spew blame to the Libertarian folks. In blaming them, you are stating that you think the people have all the election power and and the elites go along with OUR choices. And you don’t believe they control both candidates. Right? Or that they all party together at Bohemian Grove or make policy together at Bilderberg?

After learning the atrocities of Bush, they are right in line with Obama–or perhaps a set up to him.
I voted for Bush twice. It takes research to find the ugly. OK, given that you must believe this premise, consider this…

If voter live in a state that always votes R, how do the Paul/Johnson votes or electors hurt the R candidate? What it does with enough votes is give their 2016 candidate a sure standing to debate. Which the GOP cheated horribly this election. I was ashamed to be a R.

And if a voter lives in a state that always votes D, how does a third party affect the outcome there? Makes no sense!

And most importantly, if you DO SEE that the PTB don’t really care which way we vote because they “own” them both, why can’t you see that a 3rd party (both D and Rs) victory–call it the Tea Party, The Peoples Party, Paul Party or whatever name, stands to break that hold over us? Thus, we could have a real voice!

      Now, doesn’t this seem logical?

      We were trying for 5%.
Your party clearly didn’t want us after the blackout of Ron Paul the GOP had no issue with.
Then there are all the delegate issues. The fraudulent convention where you still don’t know what happened with the change of rules and the delegates. Then there is the federal reserve and Indefinite detention of US citizens without trial that Romney has no issue with.

Do you ever question why there are a dozen people on the ballot and only 2 in the debates? I’m guessing not. 5% would have forced recognition in 2016.

Johnson was not a spoiler, he was a good candidate to vote for if you want smaller, Constitutional government, which we obviously weren’t going to get with Obama or Romney. I noticed that neither Obama nor Romney discussed the most important issues, like the obscene spending that has put us over $16 trillion in debt, the Federal Reserve’s and Treasury’s creating money out of thin air and borrowing 43% of every federal dollar spent, and our reckless, militaristic foreign policies that have garnered enemies around the world, not to mention millions of innocent lives lost needlessly, and the constant diminution of our civil liberties.

I could see no difference between Obama and Romney:
      http://libertycrier.com/politics/a-word-about-the-elections/?utm_source=The+Liberty+Crier&utm_campaign=5d142e318e-The_Liberty_Crier_Daily_News_11_02_12&utm_medium=email

I had planned on voting for Ron Paul before the Republican Party and Lame-stream media slammed the door in his, and my, face. Gary Johnson, like Ron Paul, speaks truth and common sense, and has an excellent track record of reducing taxes and spending and regulations.

If I had voted for the lesser of two evils, I still would have voted for evil, so I voted for the best candidate.

MIKE Johnson was the best candidate for fiscal responsibility and smaller government. But until a time when America can successfully engage in a multiparty system we will have to settle for incremental shifts. The Libs did not fundamentally change America in one election, the fix won’t be in one election either. Compare this to football the best outcome of any drive is a touch down, unless something drastic happens to the opposition there will not a touchdown on the first play of the drive. It takes multiple plays to reach a place where a touch down is more likely to happen. Now triple the amount of players on the field and add in the refs are in the other teams pocket and we are playing an away game. THAT was our situation We got the ball on our 10 and part of the team went for the deep play while the rest went for the first down on 4&1. (Continuing with football) we just had a turn over on downs.

Massive voter fraud MUST be top priority to expose/fix if we are to survive….corrupt software in the machines…another must not mentioned, even by Repubs. (b/c they have been complicit/corrupt also). Email from relative:

“Attached you will find a PDF that explains Ohio law in regards to a recount of an election. As the article below and others you have seen explain, much does not add up concerning the Ohio Election results and we are actively looking into irregularities. The bottom line is that this race is still only 100,000 votes or so apart and their are over 200,000 provisional, military and absentee votes to be counted starting this Friday. We have time to challenge this election if we can produce valid evidence that the counts are wrong. If you worked at the polls on election day and you witnessed anything irregular and are willing to testify about what you saw, please send what you saw to Denise Mayer from the Ohio VIP project who is compiling any evidence we can gather. The one that really has me upset is the absentee ballots that are sitting in post offices with not enough postage and no return address, so they were not delivered to the Board of Election or returned to the voter! Let me be clear, I am not sure that we can do anything about the way this election was handled in Ohio, but even if we can’t, we need to explore every opportunity to expose the cheating and get it fixed. Send Denise any information you have that will help. Thanks.”

Actually, about Ohio, I was in Cleveland during the first weekend of October. I saw several (not numerous, but maybe a half dozen) Romney/Ryan signs in the districts that reported 0 votes for Romney. If you care enough to ugly up your lawn with a political sign (which I did as well), surely you care enough to go vote. Bottom line: if only those 6 people voted Romney, there would still be 6 votes for Romney.

This election was not counted fairly.

He said the only way to know an election was hacked was when exit poll data did not match votes. Its a much bigger problem then any have idea…Pass this on

Hello momprayn, I think it may be too late. We can’t get ANYONE of any stature to even acknowledge fraud at any level. Even people we tend to trust like Glenn.
Everyone—Glenn, FOX, talking heads, gop–everyone keeps calling it ‘voting irregularities’ and we should just get over it, move on and learn to move to the middle. ARE THEY F’N CRAZY???. I’m here to tell ya it was mass fraud.
It is mathematically impossible and completely illogical from the early voting numbers, to the 0 votes, to the 124% voting, and those exit polls—seriously???. We all witnessed across the entire country rep strong holds historically long lines, yet 2 million LESS showed up then 4 yrs ago?? I think not!
Just know that this mass fraud could not have taken place w/o the rinos being involved in many of the states/levels.
I would love a list of Romney’s ‘close’ campaign ‘advisers’. I’d bet the farm that they absolutely played a part in this, also. I do believe that Mitt was shocked, I believe that the internal polling was correct. I think the republican establishment never dreamed he would win. They are, after all, all progressives and they all want their UN utopia.
One of my first thoughts was to have the sign in books from the polling places held and verified, but I was informed some states do it electronically, so there goes that idea. I think areas with electronic voting is goin to be a pickle. They can do anything they want to it.

The creep is inevitable because the Electoral College has been compromised at the State level. The winner-takes-all modification almost assures that populated areas will dominate the less populated areas. It is a miniature version of what happens at the national level.

If the Electoral votes were awarded as our Founders intended, Romney would have easily won.

I love the misleading maps the Blaze uses. Landmasses don’t vote. The Democrats are winning the population centers, the cities, the areas where you find a higher number of college educated adults. The GOP is being reduced to the party of the uneducated redneck.

      Not real bright, are you?

That kind of thing is exactly what the Founders were trying to avoid by adopting the Electoral College process. It keeps the larger population centers on the same level as the less populated areas, thereby making all areas of the country relevant.

Of course, to a moron such as yourself, mob rule is just all good and flyover country doesn’t matter. Some animals are more equal than others, right?

A very true point… although the redneck part is a bit unnecessary.

Fact is, until an actual constitutional conservative straps the GOP banner across their chest, the republican party will be a party of fear, ignorance and bigotry.

Once again Encinom, You need to put down the crack pipe and realize just who is getting all those freebies such as health care, free cell phones, who wants easy amnesty, and where they live. …That’s your demographic – POOR METROPOLITAN MINORITIES. If they were educated, they wouldn’t be poor would they? Going further, It’s my observation that liberals who live in densely populated areas are generally educated beyond their intelligence, are narcissistic, lazy, hedonistic, and self righteous. (Did I miss anything?) So, before you go insulting conservatives you should look in the mirror.

You say “college-educated” like that’s a good thing. Substitute “indoctrinated” and you would likely be far more accurate. And before you start slinging the mud, I earned a master’s degree. And then I grew up.

Was fraud calculated into this “trend”? How many dead people voted in 1932? How many busloads of liberals drove from precinct to precint voting again and again in 1928? How many machines were manipulated or hacked in 1912 or even 1972? This is a whole different world. There is no comparison to past elections.

Fraud is the Chicago way. If you dig into the numbers JFK won Illinois and the electoral college by a half dozen precincts in the south end of Chicago where the dead came out to vote in large numbers. And Barack Obama had not been born. Chicago has been running roughshod over the state of Illinois since the 1920′s. I had a G-Grandfather who was a minor politician in Illinois in those days and he always cussed the Cook and Dupage county Democrats and he WAS a Democrat.

I would hope so gonzo, but imagine what will happen when the riots start like Greece, just imageine. Matial law and a crack down on all. With martial law, a dictator is sure to rise, and we all know who that would be at this point. It is part of the lib progressive plan to take away any hope of ever being a free AMERICA again.

Mike, I think the riots will be limited to the blue areas on that latest map. My area is blood red and will remain calm. California along the coast, Detroit, Atlanta, Cleveland, NYC etc. will burn and there will be no rescue from FEMA coming. If you’re in a blue spot on that map, get out now. At least have an evacuation plan. If you have family or friends in a red area, make plans with them now and have enough gas, guns, water and food to get there when the SHTF.

GONZO..here’s what will happen before the midterms..as the economy grinds to a halt Obama, Axelrod and Plouffe with the assisitance of the complicit media will demagogue the GOP house in an attempt to change it in the midterms to a democrat house thus giving Obama once again..a democrat house and senate majority to run roughshod with..that will mean the DREAM act will get passed.
The only way to counter this is to do an “Obama” on the American people and be loud and persisent in blaming Obama for the economy the same way he blamed Bush. We have to get Alinsky on him. Smear and riducule.

Agree gonzo. It often takes a near catastrophe to wake up Americans. Free food and cell phones wont help the ultra liberal metropolitan areas if there is no food or fuel to provide. I strongly suspect that privation and despair will turn those areas red eventually.

GONZO..two words for you “Tea Party”. They did it in 2010…they can do it again in 2014. They got almost exclusively bad press from the dinosaur media but look at what they accomplished for the House of Reps? Their message resonates when it stays on taxes and spending, debt and the economy, leave the social stuff out of it until 2016..play the democrat’s strategy. And we’ve got more GOP governors now. If liberalism was on the rise why are states voting in more republican governors?
This election was all about messaging not demographics. Obama’s message- as underhanded as it was- worked. We need to do to him in 2014 what he did to us this year. Who knows..maybe even the senate will go GOP this time? And if Benghazi gets any dirtier..can you say “impeachment” if the GOP has the senate and the house after 2014?
The key is messaging GONZO…get the meme out there that Obama’s leading us into another recession and will tank the country and be persistent with it. It can be done.
