The whirlwind of bizarre, troubling, confusing and seemingly never-ending details surrounding Gen. David Petraeus’s affair with biographer Paula Broadwell is apparently nowhere near settling down. On Monday evening, Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, was thrown into the scandal, as news of a separate set of “inappropriate communications” with a Florida woman named Jill Kelley came to light (she’s a friend of the Petraeus family and the same woman who originally reported receiving e-mail threats from Broadwell).
Now, new questions are emerging surrounding U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s knowledge about the Petraeus scandal, with former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton wondering whether the top Justice Department official purposefully withheld information for political reasons. In an appearance on Fox News this morning, Bolton questioned if and to what level politicization might have taken place.

John Bolton (Photo Credit: AP)
“I think the linchpin — the absolutely central point here is the role of Attorney General Eric Holder,” the former ambassador said. ”[Reports say] he knew of the Petraeus situation in the late summer and yet two months go by and there’s no indication he told the president — no indication he does anything except sit on it.” (You can read about that charge in detail further below.)
Bolton explained that if, indeed, Holder held the information, such an action would clearly be viewed as a politicization of the process. And if the attorney general did tell President Barack Obama and the two decided to conceal the information then that, too, would be considered politicization.
“I think we need to look at Eric Holder in the late summer and ask, what did he do with the information that he had about the potential compromise of the security of the CIA director,” Bolton continued.
Watch his comments, below:
On Monday, Fox News reported that Holder was notified in the late summer about Petraeus’ name coming up in an FBI probe — the same investigation that inevitably exposed his affair with Broadwell. While the White House maintains that the president did not learn about the scandal until last Thursday, if Holder knew the information for months, many, like Bolton, are questioning why the president was not informed. Fox News continues:
According to the administration’s version of events, the president did not find out about the situation until last Thursday. At the time that Holder was notified, months earlier, many details were still unknown. Petraeus himself was not interviewed until the fall. And according to one source, it is long-standing FBI policy for the FBI not to brief Congress or the White House in the middle of a criminal probe that does not involve a security threat.
However, several lawmakers and other officials say the mere fact that Petraeus was flagged in an investigation should have been reason enough to kick the issue up from the Justice Department to the White House. [...]
The law states that intelligence officials “shall” notify the congressional intelligence committees of “all intelligence activities.” It could be argued that this didn’t rise to such a level, technically. After all, Fox News confirms that when mistress Paula Broadwell’s second and final interview with the FBI was conducted the Friday before the election, they were able to formally conclude no crimes had been committed. While some classified documents were found on her computer, there was no information indicating Petraeus was the source.
With members of both political parties seeking answers, it’s likely this issue is far from over. Intense scrutiny, especially in the wake of a highly-politicized presidential election and ongoing furor surrounding the terror attack in Benghazi, Libya, is certainly on the table.

Nov. 13, 2012 at 4:41pmI couldn’t disagree, the whole mess would make a skunk look for a “Nose Pin” . One need only think of “WHERE was the illustrous General appointed?” A- the CIA, Next question, “What is the CIA known for?” A- Using female vamps to ensnare and bring down Government officials in big ways. Q- “Who has the second in power in the administration as far as the CIA is concerned?” A- The same hillary clinton who made the Senat statement that he was General Betrayus!
In light of these points, does anyone wonder why he was put in the position he was, and if they knew of the affair before the appointment that much the better to blame the whole mess should the arabic spring blow up in their faces. If you discredit the military there would be no chance of a Honduras type coupe no matter what they do in the next 4 years.

Nov. 13, 2012 at 1:44pmThe whole crooked election should be oveturn. The extent of the corruption is overwhelming. For Example, how could 59 districts in Philadelphia have a vote of 19,605 for Obama and -0- for Romney. Residents should be asked with their consent if anyone voted for Romney. That would prove how those people scammed this country and should be in jail.

1. One of our un-armed drones is shot down by Iran, media isn’t notified until after the election.
2. Bengazi is still up in the air and this administrations comments after the attacks were purposeful lies to lessen any political damage….by lying to the American people.
3. This Petraeus affair, that has been known about since last Summer is another item that hasn’t been brought up until less than one week after the election.
I actually think it is to take the heat off Bengazi.
BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS AND IS CONTINUING TO LIE TO US……..THEIR EMPLOYERS………AND I’M NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT.

Nov. 13, 2012 at 12:10pmWhy isn’t anyone on FNC or the Blaze asking questions about the other Eric, namely about GOP majority leader Eric Cantor. He’s the only member of congress who is on record as knowing about the Parteus investigation in early October as he was contacted by the FBI agent who helped initiate the investigation in the first place on behalf of Petraeus’ friend Jill Kelley. (The Blaze has actually reported this)
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/bizarre-twist-key-fbi-agent-on-case-actually-sent-shirtless-photos-to-petraeus-friend/
The only person he contacted was FBI head Robert Mueller to alert him to the agent’s claims that national security might have been compromised—but did nothing further with the information.
If Cantor really knew and understood the full implications of what was going on, did he betray the public and potentially his own partisan cause by not alerting, say, his colleague Mike Rogers, the Republican chair of the House intelligence committee, sooner? What if Cantor did tell his close friend, Rep. Paul Ryan, then still the putative vice-president? Did Team Romney decide it was too seamy or too unpredictable to pursue the sex allegations against Petraeus days before the election, or did they also fail to recognize a potential political opportunity?

Nov. 13, 2012 at 12:51pmThe problem with all the reporting on Mr. Holder is that it’s all speculation. There is no credible source other than “it’s been reported” that Holder knew in late summer. This is just pure speculation without on the record sources. Meanwhile you’ve got an on the record confirmation of Mr. Cantor knowing and there’s been no Blaze story nor has any FNC pundit challenged Mr. Cantor to come clean.
The way I see this so far is that all the confirmed on record primary actors are Republicans, and FNC and the rest of the conservative media complex are on the attack desperately trying to draw a high profile Democrat into this mess.

Nov. 13, 2012 at 12:08pmBARBER2, The more that I think about this the more incredible it all sounds. Let me see if I have this straight? The Patraeus/Broadwell affair ended the week before he took the CIA assignment. Broadwell, a resident of NC is in Afghanistan working on her book with Patraeus. Jill Kelley is a resident of Tampa, Florida and is in contact as a local socialite with officers of CentCom at MacDill AFB. How would Broadwell assume that Kelley was chasing her man, and when? It would have been well before this past August. When and where did Patraeus, Broadwell, and Kelley cross paths in a way to make Broadwell suspicious? Okay, since GEN John Allen was commander of CentCom in 2010 it is easy to understand that he and Kelley were in contact. These emails between Allen and Kelley are definitely suspicious. Just in from Fox, those emails were flirtatious in nature. Where these two of our Sampsons who are being taken down by two different Delilahs? And, to top it off, our most transparent President in history knew nothing of any of this? Only if those who are responsible to report to him refused to fill him in. Both instances are too similar, and it just seems to grow weirder by the moment.

Nov. 13, 2012 at 11:41am“Sewer Rat Mentality” is a term that I use to describe the mind set of graduates from the Richard Daley School of Corrupt Politics. Barack Obama, or Barry Soetoro, is probably one of the school’s most accomplished graduates. Close behind him in the ranking of graduates is Rahm Emanual.
It was Emanual who mouthed that oft-repeated slogan of the Sewer Rats, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.”
I was thinking of that slogan this morning when I saw the headlines about General Allen being caught-up in the Petraeus sex, treason, adultery epic. Was this “made-to-order” for an administration intent on slashing military budgets? Absolutely.
In Obama’s upcoming duel with the Congress over budget cuts, this sordid chapter will never be far from the surface. How will US Congressmen and Senators who represent districts heavily dependent on the military defend the military when it has been made to appear that many of them need real jobs? Way too much time on their hands, the Sewer Rats will infer.
Get ready, Hampton Roads and northern VA, the light rail dreams of Slick Willy are going to seem like small potatoes when our Sewer Rat-in-Chief takes a double-bitted axe to the local military budget and our congressional delegation is reduced to raising a clinched fist in anger.

I’ve been retired from the Army for going on 17 years soon. And if you had read my post on one of the other stories about this situation you would have seen where I stated just how ticked I was with both Patraeus and Broadwell. Both are Westpoint alum and while serving as officers, she in the reserves, but still an Army officer violated the UCMJ by either or both of them being married and having a covert affair. I also expressed my disdain as I wondered how many fellow soldiers, enlisted and officer under their commands did these two recommend for judicial punishment under the UCMJ for doing the very same thing.
