Atheists Petition Obama to Nix ‘God’ & the Bible From Presidential Inauguration Oath: ‘Religious Rhetoric Is Empty’

Considering their left-of-center views on a plethora of issues, many atheist activists saw President Barack Obama as the lesser of two evils this election season. But their disdain for Mitt Romney wasn’t only limited to policy. When juxtaposed against Obama, the former Massachusetts governor is overwhelmingly more devout in his faith and its practice — something that served as a turnoff to many non-believers. Consider, as one anecdotal example, the anti-Mormon rhetoric that famed non-theist Richard Dawkins recently spewed on Twitter.

Now, in the wake of Obama’s victory, atheists are setting their sights on a popular American tradition — the inclusion of the Almighty in the official presidential oath. The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist activist non-profit, sent a letter to Obama on Friday, urging the president to remove “God” from the proclamation.

“I write to respectfully ask you to re-examine the use of religion as a political tool in your second term as president,” wrote Andrew L. Seidel, an attorney with the group.

The FFRF lawyer went on to cite the increase in the proportion of Americans who do not embrace a higher power, noting that one in five are now “nones,” meaning that they are not attached to any particular faith. Seidel described these individuals — and most notably, the nation’s younger cohort of “nones” — as a group that is “tired of leaders injecting religion into politics.”

“For secular America, religious rhetoric is empty. Religious justifications for government action are hollow arguments invoking an authority that we reject,” Seidel continued. “Politicians often use religion to pander to their base, but we find such rhetoric exclusionary and distasteful.”

The letter goes on to note that, since Obama isn’t planning to run for future office, now is the time to court secular Americans, while giving them some apparently much-needed preferential treatment. The FFRF lawyer provided the president with the opportunity to “do something that no president in recent memory has done: reach out to secular Americans.” But rather than leaving the method through which Obama could do such a thing to the imagination, Seidel suggested that the president make a monumental move on January 21.

“When you stand to reaffirm your oath, do so using the language of the Founders. Eliminate the religious verbiage,” he wrote. “While you’re at it, why not place your hand on the Constitution instead of a bible?”

The FFRF maintains that the current practices of using the Christian holy book and invoking God’s name are violations of the Constitution. However, history shows that religious themes have been very much a part of the inauguration process. Consider the following description of George Washington’s first proclamation (and the faith-themed events that characterized it):

At Federal Hall, Vice President John Adams, the Senate, and the House of Representatives awaited the President’s arrival in the Senate Chamber. After being received by Congress, Washington stepped from the chamber onto the balcony, where he was followed by the Senators and Representatives. Before the assembled crowd of spectators, Robert Livingston, Chancellor of the State of New York, administered the oath of office prescribed by the Constitution: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” After repeating this oath, Washington kissed the Bible held for him by the Chancellor, who called out, “Long live George Washington, President of the United States,” and a salvo of 13 cannons was discharged. Except for taking the oath, the law required no further inaugural ceremonies. But, upon reentering the Senate Chamber, the President read the address that is featured here. After this address, he and the members of Congress proceeded to St. Paul’s Church for divine service. A brilliant fireworks display in the evening ended the official program for this historic day.

While it is true that Washington did not use the word “God” in the oath, he kissed the Bible and a church service followed his speech. So, clearly, the FFRF’s characterization of a religious-free procession is not entirely accurate. You can read the organization’s full letter to Obama here.

We are responsible for God being taken out of everything, every time we fail to stand up for Him. He has removed His protection from the USA, and we will reap what we sow. When are we going to take a stand for Him? George Washington believed in God, and the Founding Fathers thought it reasonable to include Him in the day to day running of the Country. Who are we to tell God to get out of politics? Look what happened to Israel in the ancient times when they threw God of of their country. They were overcome by enemy nations and thrown into slavery. Their economy was ruined. Their buildings were destroyed. Chains were put on them and they were sold into slavery. Christians must stand firm and defend God. Pray without ceasing. That is not to say He cannot defend Himself, but God wants us to honor and respect him. Total destruction may be avoided if we return to God and ask for His mercy.

It would be nice if these atheists would recognize that the Constitution extends the same right to the millions of Americans who cherish their religious beliefs. Sadly, they insist instead on silencing religious expression at every turn, as if they and they alone are entitled to free speech.

binge_drinker: No one is trying to destroy Christianity. It has no place in government of the public arena. We have, as Jefferson wrote, a wall of separation between church and state. Believe what you want. Just do not expect the government to endorse your religion without endorsing all others as well. If you wan to impose your religion on those that disagree with it, do not be shocked when someone imposes their own religion that you may disagree with, on you.

@ Stuidity bit you on the @ss

Just remember, when you insult the intelligence of christians, you insult men and women who stand so far above and beyond your abilities to acheive, understand or see outside your own self interest that everything else you say, on any subject is now tainted with mediocre thought and reasoning.

As the constitution says nothing of a “separation of church and state”, the “wall” spoken of by the SC comes from a Thomas Jefferson letter written 13 years after these clauses originated, yet this has been applied in the most nonsensical way imaginable.

Since atheists mention logic so much (despite their constant misuse of it), can you please explain the logic of how an allegory written by Jefferson should seriously be used as an authoritative declaration in regards to the establishment cause, despite the fact that that Jefferson had nothing to do with the creation of those clauses, and his letter post-dated the Constitution by 13 years?
I can hear the gears turning already.

Bringe dumbass: you are certainly not the brightest bulb. I never said it was in the constitution. You know what else is not in the constitution: any reference to god, the creator or any other mythological beings. The treaty of Tripoly does mention Christianity and very clearly states that the USA was not found did in any sense as a Christian nation. And for the record, atheists are not a very small minority. Try 20% of voters this past election. That’s right, the election that continues to make you guys an national embarrassment. By the way, there are certainly more atheists than there are tea baggers.

Why use the Constitution ,, He does not believe in it anyway. Why take a oath he lies about everything anyway so by not taking an oath he will not be held accountable..

Also to make the atheists happy and if Obama has b@lls he can stand on the podium and say there is no God and religion of any kind is to keep the masses ignorant.

I know what you mean. Before I found religion, I was an agnostic. And I never understood why the Atheists were so mad and angry. When people would tell me that they’d pray for me, I felt honored that they would even take the time to do something like that for me. Having “In God We Trust” on currency didn’t bother me at all. Those words are a part of America’s history. I don’t see the point in “changing” history.

How would you feel if you believed your sole existence was a freaking happenstance, the mere coincidence of egg being in the right place at the wrong time? I think I’d be a little jaded if that was what I built my life upon. The fact that many of us believe we were created well before our conception gives us the joy and happiness that connects us to the Earth, to each other and to God. Is connection shows in our faces and our lives and in the way we treat others.

This FFRF is PERENNIALLY in the middle of controversy. They enjoy the combat of political discourse. But most people, like myself, are too thin-skinned for such heated quarrel.

Does it take a sort of hot-blooded person to be an atheist? I think the answer is yes. They love to throw themselves into this political whirlwind.

Although, if you ask me, there’s something to admire about such bullheaded aggression in idealogy.

But I prefer low-key conversations, to be weighed in thoughtfully with quiet study and respctful consideration, something I have not been a witness to with atheists on this particular website.

Sadly American History is no longer taught in schools. We would not be here today commenting on the removal of God or the Bible from this country.

“Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure (and) which insures to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments.”
Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence

“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.”

This election set the stage for that. Romney is pro-Israel so he couldn’t be the one to win. Even if there are other elections in the future, Democrats will win from here on out.

Ah, but you misread my intentions. I am a Christian and I know full well what values this nation was founded on. Even those framers who proclaimed to be agnostic knew that our rights could only be granted by a higher being. They had a better grip on what today might look like so they framed our freedoms from a higher source, vs our rights from other men. What I was saying is that we now believe and vote that all our rights come from a man….and as many a godless nation has discovered the hard way….following men always leads to disaster. What I dislike is a nation who worships what a man can give them, and still espouses what that it comes from God in print and oath. I dislike my savior being commingled with the Leftist savior. I say replace God in oath and constitution with Obama Ns see what folks think…..let them see and hear for themselves what they really said with that vote.

“Oh, forget that the supposed Christians owned slaves”

“The Bible is for treating women equally!”

People forget so easy about God, yet this country was founded under God:

“We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.”
      Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation

“It is when people forget God that tyrants forge their chains.”
      Patrick Henry

“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth–that God Governs the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?”
      Benjamin Franklin

“He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of this country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man….The sum of all is, if we would most truly enjoy this gift of Heaven, let us become a virtuous people.”

It’s pathetic how Atheists don’t get that they are a very small minority and that they are guilty of what they keep accusing theists of. I get into arguments with Atheists a lot over their belief and their constant show of disrespect while demanding respect. l also I love to point out that in spite of their claim to be so against religion that their own views qualify as a religion as well. They claim to know something they have no possible way of knowing. So in other words their belief in the non-existence of God or anything else of a non-physical/spiritual nature is 100% based on faith. I always challenge them to show me of a way to test for the existence of a being who is supposed to exist outside our physical universe. There is non. The fact that they demand religious people to PROVE to them their god exists only further demonstrates their ignorance. If they could prove God, angels, and so on existed it wouldn’t be a religion. All religions are based on faith. Just like their Atheism is. I laugh when they assume I am religious simply because I tend to defend religion. I tell them I am an Agnostic and they usually try to say we share the same view. I love to point out the very important difference between us Agnostics and Atheists. We don’t claim to know if god exists or doesn’t exist. We feel that is beyond our ability to know either way. Claiming to poses knowledge you have no way of really having is not knowing.

Atheism is a religion like OFF is a TV channel.

      - like bald is a **** color.
      - like abstinence is a sex position.
      - like not collecting stamps is a hobby.

Atheism and agnosticism are not mutually exclusive. Agnosticism addresses knowledge. Atheism addresses belief. The agnostic says, “I don’t have knowledge that god exists.” The atheist says, “I don’t have a belief that God exists.” You can say both things at the same time. Some agnostics are atheistic and some theistic.

It is quite obvious the bible was created to stifle freedom and to protect the vanity of an imaginary god. The conflict with the constitution should be abundantly clear.

Just replace God with obama and the Bible with “rules for radicals.”

This is what they really want. The lib looters need God removed so they feel better about worshipping their true god, the state.

These Atheists are nothing more than fascists. Anyone who believes differently than they do MUST be stupid and not worthy of the same level of respect they are demanding for themselves. It’s pathetic. they forget our nation is made up of people of many different faiths. They also forget that Atheism, which is a religion of sorts as well, is a very small minority.

I am a Christian and I agree with your stance on the ‘WE’ front. I hate it when you get these Groups that think they speak for everyone in their area of faith or non faith. Yes, we have some consistent beliefs in each group but in both of our ways of life there are many different variations to it. For them to say they are speaking for everyone is very frustrating.

Evangelical proselytizing atheists. More so that they are not really atheists as anti-theists. Their entire belief system is less about what they believe and more about preventing others from practicing or professing their own beliefs. They are bigots of the first order, and are likely Statists looking to undermine what Marx called the opiate of the masses to promote their true deity worship of the State.

I will stop using the word atheist to describe myself. The meaning of this word has become more than its simple definition.
For a long time I have felt that some activists use the word atheism to pander for their cause.
ALL rhetoric is empty. It all sounds fine but it is insincere, pretentios, empty language. This IS the defintion of the word rhetoric.
It seems to be that the only rhetoric that is bad is the rhetoric that any particular group disagrees with.
But pander to our group and that is fine.
“It is the 30-and-unders who are our greatest supporters and are the future of this country.”
That quotes from the FFRF letter to Obama leaves no doubt in my mind of this.
I personally think that if Obama is the Chrisitan that he says he is and wants to take HIS oath with HIS hand on the Bible, then he should be free to have that choice.
I am not the one up there making the oath, I should not decide how this person chooses to make their promises and I wont.

      We non-atheists do not say “we” when we point out YOU or you’re faults;
“We” would imply that “we” are atheist too!! Oh, AtheISM is every bit as much a religion as any other religion. You preach just as loudly as any other religion, you are every bit as smug in your convictions that you are right as any other religion. You worship the anti-god just as reverently as those who worship a God.
The only discernible difference I can find between the two is that those who worship a God tend to say “we” more and include a group for mutual benefit. Those who worship the anti-god tend to say I for their own benefit… Yet they form groups and clubs to further their agenda and indoctrinate and convert new members! How odd! That sounds like a form of self-worship to me!
Now to help your young little mind relax, I will point you to your non-church so you may go and pray to the anti-gods.

My little mind is relaxed at the moment.
I was not born intelligent. I do not know what I knew when I was born. But on occasion I am sensible and rational. I am able to think and am capable of understanding.
I have no interest in this kidswithoutgod website though. What people do with their children is none of my business as long as it is not illegal or causing them injury.
I do not see how I have preached. If I have it was not my intention. I am a bit smug. But I do not really have many firmly held beliefs. Opinions, yes. No doubt I have faults. I do not mind if you point them out.
If by worship you mean to love somebody deeply, excessively or unquestionably, yeah I do that sometimes.
      I will choose a path that’s clear-
I will choose Free Will. (love that song)
If you choose to believe that is a gift from God, then believe that all you want.

You seem somewhat sensible, individualistic and tolerant; rare in an atheist. If atheists will leave the visual and audio things of the faithful alone (crosses, 10 commandments on a wall, the name of GOD in the pledge, etc.) then I will never complain about the atheist icons (blank walls and silence). Not that I complain about either now.

      @Momrules
I must continually remind myself that YES, GOD IS IN CONTROL. Watching our lives as Americans (who care deeply) manipulated by the Obama Gang, I question how God is using Obama to reach us. Is his corruption the ‘wake-up’ call for our nation? ARE we actually being charged to revolt? Or is this our call to learn to negotiate within the system? I worry for the life I will be forced to live under the Obama gang and I worry even more about my child who has been so diligent and frugal with investments , savings and planning for retirement, only to have this crook to wipe it out with a hand-out ink pen and hastily drafted E.O.’s. How long does Obama believe the American people will tolerate his personal vendetta against the US? And how severely will the repercussions become under this sociopath?
I do not want our older children to become revolutionary soldiers and our younger children to become victims.
I believe working within the system to affect change, but when the entire system appears to be broken, sick and corrupt, how long to we work to repair this system? And will we have the support of our representatives?

I keep a copy of this 1963 manifesto on my desktop and refer it to every time I see another E.O., a law rammed through the house and every questionable decision the Obama gang makes a decision regarding the US (allowing United Nations to directly tax the American people to redistribute globally). You can see the basis of these decisions outlined in the 1963 points listed in this manifesto.
The very sad issue is I have family members who are so wrapped up in this, ideology they will only drive Volkswagens to prove their support (?) of this tripe, regardless of who they alienate. The contradiction: they feel they are truly devout Baptist…living in Texas.
This is one source of my rebellion at an early age.
