Columnist Charles Krauthammer weighed in on the ongoing saga surrounding Gen. David Petraeus and his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell. In an appearance on Fox News’s “Special Report,” he said that he believes the Obama administration held the affair over the former CIA leader’s head.
Whether this action on the behalf of officials was intentional of not, Krauthammer argued that the ex-general knew that his fate was in the administration’s hands. Thus, his testimony on September 13 may have been impacted by this overarching ideal (he reportedly told intelligence officials at the time that he believes the Benghazi, Libya, terror attack was spontaneous and not pre-planned).
Below, find a transcript of the commentator’s views on the matter, as compiled by Newsbusters:
“I think the really shocking news today was that General Petraeus thought and hoped he could keep his job. He thought that it might and it would be kept secret, and that he could stay in his position. I think what that tells us is really important. It meant that he understood that the FBI obviously knew what was going on. He was hoping that those administration officials would not disclose what had happened, and therefore hoping that he would keep his job. And that meant that he understood that his job, his reputation, his legacy, his whole celebrated life was in the hands of the administration, and he expected they would protect him by keeping it quiet.
And that brings us to the ultimate issue, and that is his testimony on September 13. That’s the thing that connects the two scandals, and that’s the only thing that makes the sex scandal relevant. Otherwise it would be an exercise in sensationalism and voyeurism and nothing else. The reason it’s important is here’s a man who knows the administration holds his fate in its hands, and he gives testimony completely at variance with what the Secretary of Defense had said the day before, at variance with what he’d heard from his station chief in Tripoli, and with everything that we had heard. Was he influenced by the fact that he knew his fate was held by people within the administration at that time?”

Nov. 14, 2012 at 2:19pmNow that Petraius has been outed, and presumably, has nothing to loose (except maybe his life ala Vince Foster); that he tells the unblemished truth that leads to the distruction of this administration. Probably wishful thinking on my part. But this is my version of Hope & Change.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 6:55pmI suspect the “rats” are not scattering of their own will; rather, they were requested (?!) to visit Australia, a country every American wine taster longs to visit. These two rats, Panetta and Clinton, are probably shaking in their boots hoping they do not meet Vince Foster’s fate. Rice should be dragged, shouting and screaming, before Congress and along with Obama be forced to swear under oath they had no knowledge of a terrorist attack in the safe house in Benghazi.

Lies and liars get worse and bolder, governments persecute the wise and righteous with impunity and glee, and life becomes cheap and expendable. Love is replaced by lust, and self exceeds charity, every man is a law into himself. Without God all is vanity and like a vapor that vanishes.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 2:18pmYou can only hope that the general has a “come to Jesus” moment…every thing is exposed…the affair was supposedly over 4 months ago..first known about sometime in 2011…should have broke right at the beginning 2012 which means major scandal in an election year for Obama…and the Senate since they confirmed him and were never told or knew and didn’t say…either way… catastrophe for the Obama Admin and certain election defeat….
so instead…it is all kept quiet…
FBI is in on it…
NSA is in on it..
SecDef and SecSt are in on it…
Obama HAD TO BE in on it…NO WAY he didn’t know…unless he is just the empty chair empty suit and Jarrett really is the brains and body in the Oval Office….
Petraeus was blackmailed either directly by the Admin or he knew they knew and figured if he played ball they would not expose him… either way… he was coerced into lying about Libya..
If he is truly sorry..if he wants to restore himself to his wife and his country.. HE MUST put it all on the line…who knew what and when and why was the nation lied to….bring out the WRITTEN order to Stand Down…that could only have been signed by BHO or SecDef …
even if they turn the MSM dogs against you and try and discredit you as a liar and a cheater…tell the truth and expose them all…the American People will take over from there and clean out the den of vipers and save our country…

Nov. 14, 2012 at 1:24pmThere’s another piece of the puzzle that I don’t hear anyone addressing. Everyone wants to know why the administration and others kept blaming the Benghazi attack on that obscure video that no one saw but I haven’t heard anyone offer any ideas on that. Is it possible that while the White House hosted the Muslim Brotherhood a couple of months ago, they spent time planning on how to win public approval/acceptance of the proposed UN law that would make it illegal to criticize Islam anywhere in the world? What would Americans think of Obama if they knew he conspired with Egyptian leaders to destroy our first amendment?

Nov. 14, 2012 at 10:54amWhen all is said and done, when everybody has testified, when all the insider accounts and tell-alls have been published, when all the media fulminations have died away, I think the Benghazi affair will boil down to three questions.
Q1: Why was greater security not provided before the attack? A: Because of the belief that it was best to let subcontracted security forces and friendly Libyan militias handle the problem, and that an overt US military presence would only be provocative to the local radicals. This turned out to be naive but was understandable given that the desire to have a “small footprint” on the ground was central to our Libya policy from the outset.
Q2: Why wasn’t more done to save American lives on the night of the attack? Because at that point nothing more could be done, whether by air or on land, without risking even greater loss of American lives. Air strikes would probably have killed even more Americans as well friendly Libyans, as well as enemy militiamen. Rescuing forces would themselves have taken casualties.
Q3: Why the fuss over the video? Because rage over the video may in fact have been part of the attackers’ motivation, along with freeing prisoners (if that story can be believed), “celebrating” 9/11 and general hatred of America. No one knows. And because rage over the video was already fuelling anti-American manifestations all over the Muslim world. Was it wrong to try to quell these before they got out of hand?

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:31amPerhaps I didn’t state the answers clearly enough:
1. It was a mistake to rely too heavily on local Libyan protection prior to the attack.
2. Nothing could have been done once the attack began without risking, and probably losing, even more American lives.
3. Diplomatic considerations motivated the emphasis on the video, not the desire to deceive the American people.
I’m glad you agree that these are the basic questions. I’d like to hope that most of us can reason our way to the right answers, even before there’s a single word of testimony, from Petraeus or anyone else.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:55amI am going to take issue with your answer to question #2. The men who would have gone in to rescue the ambassador and others knowingly risk their lives for this country as military men. That is what they do. The reality is this above all others to me. You have men begging for help. American men. We had the capability to help them, maybe not rescue them, but help them, and it appears we ignored that and let them die.
Now to the ultimate statement Obama will stand behind. “We will hunt down the men responsible…..”
Really? That shouldn’t be that hard. Go in that night and you can kill them there and now. It would be over. No hunting. No intelligence gathering. No hoping you have the right people. They are firing the mortar, guess what, you die.
The conclusion I have is this, you never leave a man behind. That is what we did. We allowed those men to sit there and die. Send in 10 rescue teams if you have to, but you don’t leave men behind. Not going in is an act of cowardice and shows more concern about the negative press of losing some soldiers than losing the men who were there who we “couldn’t” help because we didn’t have enough information. Send an overwhelming force and save those men.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 12:48pmTarheelFlyer: I appreciate your devotion to military honor and sacrifice, but I still think that if there is any scandal here, it lies in failure either to provide greater security or simply to evacuate Benghazi before September 11. With all the smoke and flames and confusion, and in the dead of night, and with friendly and hostile Libyans engaged in close proximity, I doubt that the men in the consulate could have been saved at all. The later attack on the annex is a different matter. Doherty was a member of the rescue team that actually did arrive but was delayed in getting to the scene by 4 hours of haggling with Libyan authorities at the airport. A larger force, whether of military contractors or actual military, could probably have simply bulled its way across 10 miles of a city of a million inhabitants, but without meticulous prior planning this would probably have taken at least as much time. The result would have been the same, except that there would have been more casualties on both sides. Thanks, though, for your spirited argument.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 2:56pmThere is so much more to all of this, the pieces coming together look a lot more like a black OPs kidnapping gone bad. Someone from Alexandria Virginia, with links to Stanley Inc. a government IT contractor (Proof positive on youtube) put out over a hyperlink the video in question on 9/11 and 9/12, (there is also discussion of name changes to the video) Who and why? It didn’t come from the guy that did the video in CA. Next, the repeated denial of adequate security, then the REMOVAL of some security personal, less than a month from 9/11. Clearing a path? It is known that Morsi wanted the Blind Sheik, there was likely gun running both in Libya and to Syria facilitated by Stevens. Obama wanted his foreign policy to shine before the election, terrorist attacks would not do that. A possible scenario is that Stevens was to be kidnapped by people allied with Morsi with our knowledge and cooperation, Stevens would be traded for the Blind Sheik. For all this to work, people had to think the the video was to blame for the kidnapping, not terrorists, so that Obama would have the cover to be “sensitive” to Islam and the Muslims and not be accused of dealing with terrorists. October surprise! The fly in the ointment was 2 brave SEALS that would not stand down and fought off the attack for hours. The plan for the attack was to use the video, so when it all went south, they decided to double down and use the video as the excuse and cover.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 10:54amKrauthammer is a qualified psychiatrist he’s known Obama’s mind since day one. He knows EXACTLY how the Chicago (can I say Chicago without sounding racist?) thugocracy operates. He also knows how a man like Petraeus thinks. Petraeus has worked all his life for his legacy and he wanted his affair to be kept under wraps. Obama needed to keep messes to a minimum before the election so I’m certain that Petraeus was kept under control with promises that his job was safe. Lo and behold the Chicago machine drops the boom on him mere hours after the election.
But now Petraeus has agreed to testify before congress voluntarily….so it depends what else the Obama administration has hanging over him that will determine how honest and open he is to congress.
If you think this is all coincidence you don’t know the CIA (which Obama threw under the bus in and over Benghazi)…this is death by a thousand leaks. It could even become so big that Obama is impeached.
