Man in Vegetative Coma ‘Tells’ Researchers Through Brain Scans He’s Not in Pain
Whether a patient is in pain is an important question for physicians. But for patients in a coma, it’s a question that is not likely to be answered.
Now, a Canadian man in a vegetative coma who hasn’t spoken for 12 years after a car accident “told” researchers he is not in pain.
BBC News reported Scott Routley’s parents saying they thought they’d seen their son attempt communication with his thumb or eyes before, but these sentiments were dismissed by medical staff. Although unclear if these were signs of the 39-year-old trying to communicate, scientists know now that Routley, even though he is still considered in a vegetative state, is aware of his surroundings.

British neuroscientist Adrian Owen, who leads the research team at the University of Western Ontario’s Brain and Mind Institute, told the Toronto Star their research with Roultey marks the first time such a patient has been able to answer a question “actually relevant to their clinical care.”
“It became very clear that Scott had some awareness and he could respond in the scanner to the task we asked him to do while he was in there,” Owen said.
The researchers asked Routley to move his arms. Of course he couldn’t, but based on his brain scan while in an MRI, they saw he was imagining himself doing so.
According to the Star, Owen said that although MRI’s are expensive a portable EEG machine could be a cheaper alternative to produce a similar monitoring effect.
Owen described the activity he saw in Routley’s brain as a blob that grew when the patient was told to imagine something and faded when he was told to stop.
Routley was featured in a BBC Panorama program, which followed coma patients in the U.K. and Canada for a year. Watch this BBC clip regarding Routley’s case:
BBC also reported that Canadian patient Steven Graham showed through brain scans that he had new formed memories since his accident. The team asked him if his sister had a daughter, who was born after his accident, and he indicated “yes.”
This new research regarding the conscious state of some patients could raise ethical questions regarding end of life care.
ABC News reported John Connolly, a neuroscientist at McMaster University in Ontario, saying this type of research that leads to patient interaction is a “very big deal” as some patients are denied certain treatment based on conscious state. He said judging patients solely on observed behavior, if they have trouble communicating, needs to end.

This story reminded me of a man I met who once was in a coma from a car accident. While lying in his hospital bed, he said he heard the medical staff trying to convince his family to take him off life-support. He said it frightened him so badly that by the following day, he managed to immerge from his coma.

The parents were right here and it seemed obvious in Terry’s case too. She is in God’s light now, running after the balloon. May God bless caregivers with peace, love, strength and patience.
Just hope this isn’t used to say that they can confirm a patient’s wish to die. I don’t trust all this attention given to coma patients in countries with socialized medicine. Is it just me?

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 10:14amI am a firm believer that the Human body CAN do some incredible things, and that some of them, we will never understand. So I don’t believe in ANY form of euthanasia (Except in China and Japan…. Youth-in-Asia and such….)
All joking aside, I had a cat that developed F.I.V. (Feline Aids) and the doctor told us that since he was 13, he would not live much longer, and would suffer so we should put him down… Long story short, we didn’t, and he lived for 9 more years (just died last year) and NEVER experienced ANY suffering.
Same Happened with my uncle. At 30 he was in a car wreck, suffered a coma and brain damage. Doctors told us that he would not have any form of “life” but my family let him recover, and after he awoke, although he was mentally damaged (had the mind of maybe a 12 year old) he lived another 29 years and just died this past Monday due to a heart attack. And while his quality of life went down because of the brain damage, he still lived a decent life.
Point is… NEVER give up on life…. FIGHT until the end… You never know what will happen.

I have a seven year old son who suffered severe brain damage at birth. Only 5% of his brain is actually alive, and yet he smiles, laughs, signs “I love Mommy”, and even jokes with his nurses. It has been the most difficult and most rewarding seven years of my life. The Bible has a verse that says, “For God created the foolish to shame the wise, and the weak to shame the strong.”

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 3:12amMy great uncle had a heart attack about 12yrs ago. My aunt (Aunt#1, not a blood relative) was in charge of his Power of Attorney. She left the hospital to go take care of something, and while she was gone, a nurse asked Aunts#2 and #3 about turning off the machines. #2 and #3 were under the impression that because they were blood relatives that they were allowed to make that decision. So they said yes. The nurse told the doctors that permission to turn the machines off was given and didnt follow up on who had the POA. My uncle died while aunt#1 was out.
Make sure you have a will with your express wishes written down, and make sure family knows who is in charge. My uncle had told aunt#1 that he didnt ever want his machines turned off if he was ever in that situation. Hearing that some people are aware while in comas scares the heck out of me now.
My mom was in a coma from West Nile encephalitis this summer (2nd coma for her, 1st was 50yrs ago after an accident) She was never on life support, but we refused to let her go. She’s now recovered and home and in better health than me or my dad. (she doesnt remember the coma. We say that she “slept” thru the summer)
Hope I’m never in a similar situation. Terrified now.

It is important to have a Living Will (free)that is legal in your state and choose a medical power of attorney who you trust to do as you would wish medically. Have it witnessed. Give copies to your doctors and family members. This way, your family won’t have to wonder which way you lean with regards to life support machines, and or just going naturally. Many more scenarios in Living Will. You can also choose to hear Glenn Beck on radio daily : )

well, I dont exactly count them as enemies, but my two aunts that allowed my uncle’s machines to be turned off…they were the ones who benefited the most from his will. They got most of his money (not sure they knew beforehand that they were beneficiaries)
I would hope that if I were in a similar state, that I wouldnt have the relatives standing over me with a pillow waiting for me to go so they could take the money and go shopping. (thank goodness I’m poor at the moment. No one bothers me for money)
My dad and my aunt#1 are both medical professionals. I know that hospitals will always try to save your life…at least at this point in time. Once Obamacare hits however, I dont think the hospitals will be as caring.

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 8:42amHey Chet, you’re presuming she wanted to die, which was not established and was unable to be established. That is the problem with these types of cases. Everyone who is healthy says, “If I’m like A,B,or C, I would want to die.” The problem is, when they get to one of those points, they don’t want to die. Most people don’t want to die in spite of their disabilities, which is why, prior to this case, we were a people who erred on the side of life.
Describing what he did as taking care of his wife prior to moving on to another woman is hardly apt, unless you define “care” as putting a bullet in her head, mafia style. What he did was testify in court that he needed millions of dollars to help with her estimated medical costs for her supposed life span and once he got that money, immediately began proceedings to kill her. That it took so long in the courts doesn’t negate the speed in which he attempted to murder her through legal means.

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 4:09pmI’m presuming that she didn’t want to die or not want to die because she no longer had a human mind. Ending the life in her remains is part of taking care of his wife prior to moving on. Ending the life in an animated human body by putting a bullet in its head would be preferable to starving it, but unfortunately there are rules against that in a hospital.

Sorry if you don’t like the ‘garbage’ but to be honest we don’t either… yOUR president’s takeover of health care means government funding of treatment, and there int enough money to do everything for everybody.
HIS plan sets up ‘panel’ including politicians/ bureaucrats… nOT doctors or researchers or ethicists or even actuaries… Bureaucrats to decide what treatments are acceptable for what populations…
The panel doesn’t answer to Congress.
Now, you don’t want to believe its a death panel… Remember when Ocare tax wasn’t a tax?
Remember mammography? National studies in Sweden where there is universal healthcare PrOvEd the benefit of mammography for women starting at 40… Bureaucrats and their pet statisticians decided the cost was too much… Not the benefit, not considering the losses in life family or support, and ignoring that cancer in younger women is more aggressive and needs earlier detection… On their biased claims thousands of women have already not gotten mammograms… Statistically because of their propaganda women have already missed diagnosis until recovery is not possible.
Sadly, Pelosi and her cronies will see to their own health, but you and I will face long waits as docs will retire and there won’t be new docs, low bidder care will rule, care workers will be overworked and underpaid, new technology will not be developed
But smile, thisis what you wanted… Redistribution, government medicine… Garbage

The doctors told me that she was a vegetable and that I should end her life. I have always considered myself a murder by that one decision. Quite frankly, I feel that I was pressured to do this. Odd how doctors went from “preserve life at all cost” (Karen Ann Quinlan) to “time to pull the plug” (Hassan Rasouli). It was certainly the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. Now, I’m not so sure it was the right thing. God forgive me.

I can only come close enough to understanding your pain in that I was asked to make the same decision about my premie son when his brain bled severely shortly after birth. It is easy to say that no one should ever be asked to make that choice about someone they love, but the reality is that it happens far too often. We have to make the best decision we can at the time under extreme stress and pain. I pray that God will give you peace of mind and comfort in your heart. You have asked and He has forgiven. :-) You will see your wife again and will be able to see how happy she is now. As for me, I will go ask my son to see if his guardian angels can pass your love on to your wife. God bless.

You knew your wife better than anyone else, and from the sound of it you did as the doctors suggested based on the medical information you had to work with. Trust that you did the right thing for your wife. The base of the brain is important for the body to function properly. Not all brain injuries affect the same place in the brain. Release yourself of this burden and release her so she can be at peace. God will or has let you fall in love again. Don’t hold back from loving again.

A panel would have people on it that you could appeal to with evidence. The response will instead be “Check the book. You don’t qualify for care. Too bad. Sorry, rules are rules.” And there will be no appeals.
