U.N. Declares Contraception a ‘Universal Human Right’ for ‘Women and Adolescents’

United Nations: Access to Birth Control, Contraception a Universal Right

(Photo: AP)

Before the spring of 2012, birth control was not often considered a heated political topic.  Turning on the television, one was far more likely to see an exchange over the Iraq war or the economy than impassioned protests for subsidized contraception.

That has since changed, however, and the “war on women” is now an acceptable talking point.  Not only that, but the United Nations has just solidified its own stance on the matter and declared access to contraception a “universal human right” for “women and adolescents.”

It marks the first time the U.N. Population Fund’s annual report explicitly describes family planning as a right, arguing it could dramatically improve the lives of women and children in impoverished countries.

Apparently the legal, cultural and financial barriers to accessing contraception and other family planning measures are infringements upon women’s ability to live freely.

It should be noted, however, that Wednesday’s report isn’t binding and has no legal effect on national laws.  However, many top figures in the current administration are supporters of the United Nations, and are much more likely to take guidance from such a body than many conservatives would like.

The global organization also says it plans to increase funding for family planning by a further $4.1 billion, which they think could save $11.3 billion annually in health bills in poor countries.

The United States is single largest contributor to the United Nations, paying roughly 22% of its $5.15 billion budget.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The UN wants everyone to use contraception, knowing full well that muslims will not. The long term result of this should be obvious. This is jihad sponsored by the UN.

The U.N. seems like a foreign power that is gaining control over our country…and has our highest “leader” in its pocket.

So, since we can’t even hint at taking action against our “leader”, perhaps it is time to declare the U.N. a hostile foreign force and treat it as an invading army. I think 100,000 people surrounding the U.N. building and burning it to the ground when in session should send a pretty powerful message to the rest of the world (and D.C.) to stay out of our lives.

The UN does not understand what a right is. If people have a right to contraception, then who was violating their rights for all those centuries before contraception was invented? You cannot have the right to a manufactured good. You also cannot have the right to the fruit of someone else’s labor. That would be slavery.

Strangely too, I don’t have a bajillion kids….and I’m what you might consider a “perfectly healthy” female in that respect…It would be amusing to see what the UN considers “freedom” and Rights’ If it weren’t so damn scary. It won’t be optional by the time they are done.

Odd that someone in another post mentions the Muslims. It’s true that they won’t use it and the UN will not do anything to force them. No thanks…I’m not subsidizing someone else’s stupidity and bad choices. Government types keep using exceptions to prove a rule that really shouldn’t exist (ie. rape victims exist and get pregnant through no choice of their own, therefore abortion should remain available to the majority of women who use it for purposes other than cases of rape).

      We understand that completely…

The question is who should be responsible? We believe the individual, you apparently, believe society is responsible.

The other problem we have is: What’s next? It’s cheaper to eat vegetables? It’s cheaper to not have handicapped? It’s cheaper to have perfect vision?

Your ‘collective mentality’ is evil and destroys the freedoms of people.

By unwanted…..what do you mean? If I give it to you for free, then I can tell you what to take, how to use it and for how long. Is that okay? So I think the left just needs to say it and stop tap dancing around the truth. They want to cull the herd of unwanted society (those who are takers not producers). Is that what unwanted means?

Because Porky, removing consequence doesn’t fix anything. We subsidize people’s birth control, there is no longer a problem with the activity, more people have sex. Most of the time, the target audience are either too stupid or impatient to think about birth control, young people always think they are invincible. Then STD’s become a problem, and we have to subsidize people’s need for medical treatment, and who knows what happens after that. If there is no negative consequence for behavior, then the behavior will continue and likely get worse.

My plan, get a few baby mamas out there with no government support for their stupidity, and let every teenage girl watch how much they suffer, it will be a better solution to teenage pregnancy than all these moronic birth control programs.

But lets be honest this is really about controlling the population. The thing of it is that the women who jump in and agree with this are too d@mn stupid to know they are being played and used. Just as a side note…the market tanked as Obama was speaking.

Obama is still campaigning, all that came out of his mouth was “middle class”..”wealthy should pay their fair share”. And when it came to “immigrants” it was “young people in our military and our colleges who are here through no fault of their own”.
He mentioned the DREAM act by name…if the house changes sides in 2014 midterms..expect the DREAM act to be passed. Obama wants 12 million illegals to become citizens and thus lock in a democrat majority in already skewed electoral college counts. Obama seeks one party rule.

I think it’s pretty clear to most of us with eyes that this is all he knows how to do. The man can’t decide which pair of underpants to put on in the morning without consulting one of his czars. He probably readsthe teleprompter to tell him which leg goes in first too. Really, how many seconds does it take to decide whether or not to kill OBL? Yet they made an entire movie about “the decision”.

Hello! It’s about time. I realize abortion is a touchy topic, but the surest way to reduce them is through education and contraceptives.

Yeah, it’s a “right”. Therefore, someone now has a “right” to the labor of another person. Yeah, that ends in a happy place doesn’t it?

Of course, keeping your pants on unless you want children is pure lunacy. God forbid right? Makes much more sense to declare that someone has the right to another’s labor. So if someone refuses to get up in the morning to make the BC pills are they now oppressing women? Should men with guns force people to make BC pills in order to preserve the “rights” of women?

The collective stupidity of mankind is unfathomable.

Rothbardian_in_the_Cleve, the whole concept of “just say no” seldom works for women in developing and impoverished countries. Whether you realize it or not, the population explosion in those countries does affect us in the US. It’s politically destabilizing and is a strain on resources.

You need to learn why rights are rights. You don’t have the right to the fruits of someone else’s labor. If you want BC, you have the right to go get it yourself, you don’t have the right to have it provided to you. If so, then someone else would be indentured into servitude to make it and provide it. That’s why we have the right to PURSUE happiness, not the right to happiness. Because then someone is required to give it to you. You don’t have the right to a comfortable living, but you do have the right to go get one for yourself. You don’t have the right to healthcare, but you have the right to go get it yourself. You don’t have the right to have someone else provide you with something, be it a service or product. That is slavery for the person providing it.

Really? Why would we promote adolescents having premarital affairs? How is the UN going to get the funds for every country to have access to these? Have you heard of Agenda 21 and its goal of population control? If not, I would say you better start doing your homework. The UN is the most un-American and un-Constitutional thing the Progressive movement has brought to the world.

      Gourdy,

I’m sure your eugenicist friends will find cool and innovative ways to reduce the global population. I hope I’m in a later wave because it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

None of the issues are by themselves important. Only who has to pay for them. Governments will force “free societies” to fund and funnel money to dictators, kingdoms and corruption and never solve the problem.
