One persistently interesting story that has emerged since the wrap-up of this fall’s campaign by President Barack Obama is the story of how the Obama campaign’s operations were dictated not by liberal ideology but by a process consumed with data and an attempt to scientifically boost turnout.
Conservatives sneered at this approach prior to the election for its attempt to obviate human free will as a factor. Now that it has worked, Republican consultants are probably combing through the strategy to see how to replicate it on their side. And one particularly interesting area where this data-driven approach appears to have been not only used, but pushed further than anyone had before, can be seen in an article by the New York Times explaining the campaign’s consultation with scientists studying behavioral economics.
Behavioral economics is a relatively new field of economic analysis that blends insights from psychology and neuroscience with econometric equations to model how human beings make their decisions. It has gained special currency on the Left because many liberals see its conclusions as contradicting the presumption by classical economists that every decision is “rational.” That this is a straw man of the economic definition of “rationality” does not appear to phase these would-be critics.
However, despite its currency on the Left, behavioral economics leans neither direction (though many authors, such as Cass Sunstein, have sought to apply its insights to government), as it is focused exclusively on understanding human decision-making processes, and what stimuli are most likely to make people choose particular options. That is where the Obama campaign decided to use it – specifically, to figure out what would motivate people to vote.
From the New York Times article:
In a now classic experiment, a pair of Stanford psychologists asked people if they would display in a home window a small card proclaiming the importance of safe driving. Those who agreed to this small favor were later much more likely to agree to a much larger favor, to post a large “Drive Carefully” sign on their lawn — “something no one would agree to do otherwise,” Dr. Cialdini said.
Obama volunteers also asked people if they had a plan to vote and if not, to make one, specifying a time, according to Stephen Shaw, a retired cancer researcher who knocked on doors in Nevada and Virginia in the days before the election. “One thing we’d say is that we know that when people have a plan, voting goes more smoothly,” he said.[...]
Another technique some volunteers said they used was to inform supporters that others in their neighborhood were planning to vote. Again, recent research shows that this kind of message is much more likely to prompt people to vote than traditional campaign literature that emphasizes the negative — that many neighbors did not vote and thus lost an opportunity to make a difference.
This kind of approach trades on a human instinct to conform to social norms, psychologists say. In another well-known experiment, Dr. Cialdini and two colleagues tested how effective different messages were in getting hotel guests to reuse towels. The message “the majority of guests reuse their towels” prompted a 29 percent increase in reuse, compared with the usual message about helping the environment. The message “the majority of guests in this room reuse their towels” resulted in a 41 percent increase, he said.
This apparent reliance on a scientific model of human behavior was, apparently, unprecedented. The scientists who the Obama campaign informally consulted with on this approach had offered their services to the Kerry campaign in 2004 and were rebuffed. A few Senators had met with them about using their ideas, but nothing concrete had emerged. However, those involved told the Times that they did see traces of their own ideas reflected in the Obama campaign’s actual strategy:
The researchers said they weren’t told which of their ideas were put to use, or how. But sometimes they got hints. Dr. Fiske, the Princeton psychologist, said she received a generic, mass-market e-mail from the Obama campaign before the election.
“It said, ‘People do things when they make plans to do them; what’s your plan?’ ” Dr. Fiske said. “How about that?”
This raises the question – how far will campaigns be able to go in psychologically manipulating their voters in the future? And in a world where science can predict the best tools to maximize turnout and/or effectiveness, what other factors could determine victory?

Nov. 14, 2012 at 12:09pmPer the above pouting posts: I was never a huge fan of Romney in the primary season. I became very enthusiastic when he picked Paul Ryan as his VP. Why? It showed he was serious about solving the big problems, biggest being our debt. Even all the Democrats I know agree with the debt being the albatross around our neck. Romney was less proficient as a campaigner and never used that as an issue. (Too big of a lightning rod for cheap, one-liner criticism?) Yet on we go ever closer, sprinting “Forward” to the REAL fiscal cliff, following in the footsteps of Greece.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 12:50pmSo in essence, they went with a rather valid theory that states that people who are predisposed to conform will seek to conform given a chance. That’s actually not a bad gamble.
The problem is a lot of folks, say, the other 53%, seem to generally lean more individualistic than conforming to social norms (and sorry Libs, but Goth, piercings and loads of tattoos are conformity too). Or better put, everybody conforms to a degree, however those predisposed to want to conform are easy targets for manipulators wanting to make them conform for a specific pre-defined goal.
That says a lot about the innate collectivist mindset of the Left I suspect.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 1:39pmDefenders of slavery argued that the sudden end to the slave economy would have had a profound and killing economic impact in the South where reliance on slave labor was the foundation of their economy. The cotton economy would collapse. The tobacco crop would dry in the fields. Rice would cease being profitable.
Defenders of slavery argued that if all the slaves were freed, there would be widespread unemployment and chaos. This would lead to uprisings, bloodshed, and anarchy.
Defenders of slavery argued that slavery had existed throughout history and was the natural state of mankind. The Greeks had slaves, the Romans had slaves, and the English had slavery until very recently.
Defenders of slavery noted that in the Bible, Abraham had slaves. They point to the Ten Commandments, noting that “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, … nor his manservant, nor his maidservant.” In the New Testament, Paul returned a runaway slave, Philemon, to his master, and, although slavery was widespread throughout the Roman world, Jesus never spoke out against it.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:51amTime to step up and realize that people tend to have very low economic IQ’s. Austrian economist von Mises says that with these type of cult like citizens, rational arguments like the ones Romney was making aren’t effective. In the end, it may have to be economic pain so severe that they choose to see another way.
Even then, look at the people in Chicago. The day after the election THOUSANDS stood in a line for a city sponsored Jobs Fair. One woman stood in line since 3am. When the people discovered upon entering that there were no jobs, that people at the booths weren’t even taking resumes, but merely handing out information, they exploded with rage and frustration. So who shows up to pacify the mob? Rahm Emanual the lying snake, who tells them, just apply on line for the government jobs. Another woman interviewed said she felt better.
How hard is it to help someone leave an abusive relationship? Very, unless they want to leave, but first they have to see. Another principle of behavior economics is that people will want to prevent the loss of something far more than they want to gain something. Tell an abused woman she can have a great job in another city or stay with her abusive partner who is sometimes nice to her – and she’ll stay for little bit of “nice,” because to leave it will feel like a loss. Democrats wanted to prevent the loss of their cultural icon, and the loss of their services, more than any other opportunity.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:44amSo, with that said I suppose these emotional voters are the ones most likely to be violent? These are the war mongers and the Hitlers of the future? Should we be concerned with these findings? Are we doomed to leadership with no rationale? Looks like more questions than answers here.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:39amThere you go, proof that people are sheep who are looking for a shepherd. We need to step into he position of shepherd and lead these sheep before the country is lost.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 1:11pmWe can lead a humans to knowledge, but we cannot make them THINK. Sensory OVERLOAD in much of the past decade has caused many people to ‘need that vacation’ that seems to NEVER come… so — TAKE IT ANYWAY! — We’re too busy trying to ‘avoid’ the NEXT asteroid, rather than figgering out what it IS, where it’s coming from, assessing the immediate threat and its potential threat — Best defense is no BE there… step aside and allow its very inertia to pass right on by — like a game of ‘chicken…’ — You only APPEAR to be there.
The only way to RIGHT a wrong is to CHANGE it from within one’s SELF. The sheep are going to do what the sheep DO. Mob mentality. Keep up with the Jones’ — ‘One UP…’ — WIN WIN WIN! – If you’re playing in someone else’s ballpark, you have to follow their rules — or — at the moment — you have the option to pick up your bat and glove and find another ballpark more conducive to your idea of how the game should be played (according to Hoyle/the Constitution, say) or — CREATE your own ballpark… :-)

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:39amI will not comment on the article because I am not of a scientific nature. The Obama voters, interviewed on televised segments, were ignorant, uneducated and totally unaware of the consequences of Obama motives…Santa Claus won the election.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:39amBlame goes one place and that is to the ignorant, stubborn, anti-Mormon boneheads. But hope it all goes so far South now at record speed. We are all going to have to live this nightmare so make sure it happens to all and happens fast. Oh and by the way – keep right on dividing our side – sure works well.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:32amSo to concentrate this to it’s essence…
Romney’s voters acted on rationality while Obama’s voters acted on emotions and human beings allow their emotions to trump their rationality.
In short it sums up conservatives and libertarians against liberals. Conservatives are ruled by rationality while liberals are ruled by their emotions.
And these “scientists” find ways to manipulate emotions to achieve a desired result.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:44amI understand the intent of your post, but I disagree with anyone thinking Romney was a “rational” choice.
He was just as bad a choice as Obama, just a tad more smart in a fiscal capacity. A Romney vote WAS an emotional response by republican voters in reaction to a possible Obama re-election.
Let’s not kid ourselves.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:54amTSUNAMI..I’m not going to debate Romeny’s “cred”.
But you understand what I’m saying…conservatives and libertarians thought rationally, saw the deplorable unemployment numbers, the debt and the awful domestic and foreign policies of Obama, realised that these would create huge problems for ALL Americans further down the line and voted agaisnt Obama.
Conversely Obama voters voted for “he understands us”, and ” he understands women’s issues”, “Romney is rich he doesn’t have a connection to us”.
Rationality versus emotionality.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 1:42pmI would also say, based on my observations, that conservatives are not trend followers. Also, they care much more for their fellow man, hence the contributions to charity divide, and that translates into caring more about our country.
Liberals could care less about anyone, but themselves. They have no sense of shame.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 5:48pmUntamable-Kate. Yes, but 55% of you are idiots as opposed to only 30% of angry white males. I think us angry white males have the common-sense-think-for-ourselves thing pretty sown up. i.e., you’ll never see an “angry white male” swoon over a candidates haircut, or over his “abs”, We consistently vote Conservative and we’re not distracted by ads or rhetoric. The other groups (lets not forget the swooning soccer moms over Bill Clinton as a “husband substitute”) have a ways to go. Face it, womens lib aside, but most women are swayed by intangibles in a candidate.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 5:56pmIt’s not necessarily the handouts. Women are easily swayed by intangibles, they may like a candidates positions, but prefer another candidates voice and demeanor. Blacks are just led around like a bunch of sheep doing whatever is required of them by their leaders, they stopped thinking for themselves years ago. Hispanics are just easily frightened. As they become more educated and incorporated into society Hispanics will be conservatives in general. That’s why the dems want illegals to be able to vote. Illegals will always vote for the party that allows them to work for demeaning wages and live in squalor, the dems want everyone to be the same. The republicans should start a campaign to educate them. Polls show that hispanics that are legal and work a regular job are conservative.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 11:30amGreat, so now both sides will be encouraging voters to act on emotion instead of intellect. You don’t win if you become your enemy Republicans.

Nov. 14, 2012 at 12:14pmcorrect Gonzo…absolutely correct…the EXACT thing that the Founders WARNED us about… Mob Rule is taking place…follow the herd…do what everyone else does…don’t be a Free-Thinker…. 1984 on steroids…
this is a travesty on the American system of government, liberty, freedom, and the Self Rule of Man…..now we are going to have endless talking heads all rambling on about how we have to figure out what moves a person..what connects with them emotionally…
forget the facts…forget the reason..the logical..the rational behind an idea…forget self sacrifice and leaving the world better than you found it…. it is the ultimate ending to the “me me me” mentality….give me something that makes me feel warm and fuzzy and you get my vote, loyalty, and undying worship….
this isn’t NEW science..this is the OLDEST of all science…the OLDEST of all Professionals… WHORE out your principles, values, ethics, and morality for the quick thrill and feeling of social acceptance…
Our Founders warned us….”our government is only valid for a moral and just people, it is wholly unfit for any other” … ” a free and educated people is the best protection from tyranny”…..
We are no longer education on our own history, economics, government, and Freedom and we are no longer a moral and just people…just a selfish and lustful people… We deserved what we got…now is time to rebuild..
