Fury of Hamas Rockets on Southern Israeli Towns Kills Three Civilians While Israel Continues Pillar of Defense

Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza unleashed a fury of rockets on southern Israeli towns Thursday, launching salvo after salvo every few minutes. One rocket scored a direct hit on an apartment building in Kiryat Malachi, killing three Israelis and injuring an eight-month-old baby.

The IDF reports that as of 6:00am Eastern, Palestinian terrorists had fired 196 rockets at Israel since the start of Operation Pillar of Defense (or Pillar of Cloud in Hebrew) Wednesday afternoon. For its part, the IDF says its bombing campaign aimed at Gaza’s militant infrastructure has struck “156 terror sites” in Gaza. The IDF began its campaign with the assassination of Hamas military chief Ahmed Jaabari.

Contrary to Hamas’ strategy of intentionally targeting civilians, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) continued its efforts to avoid Palestinian civilian casualties. On Thursday, it dropped thousands of leaflets over Gaza urging citizens to stay away from Hamas buildings and terrorist launching grounds. Hamas and other terrorist groups have a history of using Palestinians as human shields by hiding weapons sites near and in civilian areas. The leaflets said:

For your own safety, take responsibility for yourselves and avoid being present in the vicinity of Hamas operatives and facilities and those of other terror organizations that pose a risk to your safety.

Hamas is once again dragging the region to violence and bloodshed. The IDF is determined to defend the residents of the State of Israel. This announcement is valid until quiet is restored to the region.

See this video the IDF Spokesman posted on YouTube of the leaflets falling on Gaza:

The IDF describes this video as a strike on a weapons warehouse holding medium range rockets:

Palestinian sources report that 13 have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its military operation.

The IDF Spokesman told the Jerusalem Post that the Iron Dome rocket defense system successfully intercepted 48 incoming rockets since the operation began.

Schools remain closed in southern Israel and in Gaza as Israel’s Home Front Command ordered residents in the south to remain within 15 seconds of shelter.

Concerned Hezbollah in Lebanon might decide to launch rockets of its own at northern Israel, the government raised its threat alert to the highest level – Gimmel (third letter of Hebrew alphabet) – for the entire country, according to Israel’s Army Radio.

As for the Syrian border, an Israeli soldier was lightly wounded Thursday when what’s being described as stray fire from the Syrian internecine conflict veered over to the Israeli side of the border. This marks the third time this week that Syrian weaponry has landed on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday. The Jerusalem Post reports:

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke on the telephone on Wednesday night with US President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. He was also scheduled to speak with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The prime minister thanked Obama and Biden for taking the position that Israel had a right to defend itself.

Israeli media reported that the Israeli security cabinet decided during an emergency meeting on Wednesday night to authorize the mobilization of reservists if needed, while the IDF is not ruling out the launching of a ground operation.

UPDATE:

The names of the Israeli victims have been released. One of them was a pregnant mother. From Lubavitch.com:

The victims, two men and a woman, were identified as Ahron Smadga, Yitzchak Amselam, and a 25 year old expectant woman, Mirah (nee Cohen) Scharf. An infant and several children were among the wounded who were taken to nearby hospitals. The victims were members of the city’s Chabad community.

See our full report here.

 UPDATE II:

Army Radio reports that one rocket fell in an open area in Rishon Le’Zion, which is deep inside Israel. The city council leader tells Army Radio reporter Hadas Schteif that the rocket fell far from the center of town, so life there goes on as usual.

@Moon – What are you talking about? Nobody has a problem with anyone having Nuclear power (i.e. peaceful nuclear ability)… Israel and most others have a problem with Iran having military nuclear power because they consistently state their goal is to wipe Israel off the map. How is it so difficult to understand the difference?

Two men have guns – one you know well and is a man of character and level headed. The other you know equally well and has a short fuse, is easily enraged, etc. You are given the choice of who is to hold the responsibility of safekeeping a new more powerful gun.

There are no idealogical (I just wouldn’t produce the new gun) choices to make. The technology exists and the physical weapons are being distributed… which person do you choose?

You have the same issue here. A country that at least by track record has a level head when it comes to having but not using nuclear arms. On the other hand you have a country who has never had nuclear arms, proclaims it wants them but won’t use them, yet proclaims it wants another country and people wiped off the face of the planet and has it’s people repressed under a theocratic republic by appointee only.

that certainly wont help the situation, especially since the country of Iran han’t started any wars, even before the war with Iraq. Iran has recently hosted a summit with over one hundred nations attending and pledging support for Iran in its right to develop atomic energy for peaceful purposes; not for the purpose you propose for Isreal to use atomic weapons to destroy Iran. This shows the hypocrisy of your statement, because it most certainly will trigger the start of the WAR OF ARMAGEDDON!!

The incoming rockets are cheap and abundant compared to the interceptor missiles. The muslims are attempting to reduce the numbers of interceptors, at great expense to Israel. If the muslims have something “new” to fire at Israel, they won’t want to use them until they are confident there won’t be enough interceptors to stop them all. Israel has certainly warned them enough. I hope they start hitting back much harder with each new incoming rocket so they can save the interceptors for the big show.

There is a clear line of demarcation between good and evil in the Middle East. Our ultimate success in the war on terror (no matter what the Obama administration wants to call it) hinges upon blessing Israel and upon realizing that Israel’s enemies are our enemies and vice versa. We fight against Al Qaeda, which is just another tentacle from the same beast Israel struggles against. They struggle against the tentacles of Hamas and Hezzbollah and all the others.

Let America draw a line in the sand in the Middle East and stand strongly and fiercely in support of Israel in the struggle against the beast that is Islam. May God bless Israel and give Israel victory against their enemies, in Jesus name amen.

The european countries including america, who had the power to partition Palestine and take it from the people who were already there, and then give it to a horde of european converts to judaism and then to rename it isreal! Why didn’t you go with your original intent in trying to set up the state of isreal in Uganda? I guess it’s because you wanted to be closer to the promise of taking Palestine from the palestinian people. Moon – You fail to accept the fact that there are no such people as Palestinians just as there are no such people as New Englanders. You seem to find it wrong for displaced Jews to return to their land of origin but find no problem with Arabs returning to their land of origin. When the Ottoman Empire fell the land was divided into lands for Semetic people and gave us new Arab countries such as Bahrain. The Palestie Mandate provided a homeland for another Semetic people, the Jews. Unfortunetly, 78% of the Palestine Mandate was given to the Arabs and thus Trans Jordon was created headed by an Arab king (appointed by the west) and was meant for any indigenous Arabs a place to live. Perhaps we should demand Arabs leave Iraq so the rightful residents called Assyrians can return to their homeland.

Moonstruck, if you are so sure that Palestine was once a country than you should be able to answer these 12 questions about it.

      1. When was it founded and by whom?
      2. What were its borders?
      3. What was its capital?
      4. What were its major cities?
      5. What constituted the basis of its economy?
      6. What was its form of government?
      7. Can you name at least one Palestinian leader before Arafat?
      8. Was Palestine ever recognized by a country whose existence, at that time or now, leaves no room for interpretation?
      9. What was the language of the country of “Palestine”?
      10. What was the prevalent religion of the country of “Palestine”?
      11. What was the name of its currency, and choose any date in history and tell what was the approximate exchange rate of the Palestinian monetary unit against the US dollar, German mark, British pound, Japanese yen, or Chinese yuan on that date.
      12. And, finally, since there is no such country today, what caused its demise and when did it occur?

First yes I am using that tired argument. Why? Because they are valid points. Second you ignorance of history is showing. Do you want to know why the “European Jews” had the right to supposedly displace and force the imaginary people of Palestine from the desert that they lived in? Its because Europe beat the Axis powers in WWI. You are probably oblivious to the fact that the then Ottoman Empire was a member of the Axis powers, and they lost and from that victory the European countries took land as a prize. Its the age old concept of to the victor goes the spoils, and from some of that conquered land after the end of WWII the state of Israel was founded.

@22YONEOCON, the “valid points” you made don’t mean jack and neither does it matter that they lived in the desert because a whole lot of heartache and pain is being caused by fighting over that desert. It does not change the fact the Palestinians who are an ethnicity, just as the Jews are one, were forcibly removed from their land with military force.

That is why they are angry to this very day. And I should add that they are rightfully angry, but still wrong to kill because of their anger. Pray for piece, because those allied powers created this mess.

There are no clean hands here. The Arab terrorists who fire rockets and blow up bombs in Israel are wrong, and in no way am I defending them. But what about Israel? The Israeli response to terrorists firing rockets into Israel was to send indiscriminate tank fire into Gaza, killing 4 civilians. Israel has fired on hospitals, UN posts and journalists. You can find testimony from ex-IDF members detailing the abuses by the Israeli military and police, including the fact that it was routine for IDF members to stand by and do nothing while Israeli civilians abused and assaulted.Arab civilians, only stepping in if the Arabs dared fight back. One guy talked about how sad he was when told by vacationing Jews from Europe and America that they had been told it was alright to attack Arabs and destroy their property. The IDF has used children as shields. An American was run over by a bulldozer while protesting against Israeli occupation, and no one was punished. Israel is currently in contravention of several UN security resolution with their occupation. Baruch Goldstein, a mass-murderer who killed 29 Palestinians and wounded 125 while they were at prayer, is still revered by some segments of the population. Their was a video released a few years back showing Israeli civilians beating old men and women with bats because they (the Israeli’s) wanted to steal their farmland–the “repossession” of Palestinian farms being a common occurrence.

wow.the arab countrys amass an army to invade the newly reborn country.just as the tanks start rolling into israel, israel meets them with jet fighter defence.annilates them, and is immediatly condemned by the left (liberals) and the arab nations.israel is attacked constantly and when they defend themselves, their the aggressor not the victom.through out all this time, egypt pushes the palistinians into israel.in the 80′s the jordainians remove palistinians right of private property, they protest.the jordianians meet them with tanks.killing 32,000 men women and children, while chaseing them out of jordan into israel and the christian nation of lebanon(it was a christian nation at that time).(muslim on muslim crime)no one says a word..and this continues today.and now their trying to apply this to US,the great satan.they hate US more than israel because we prevent them from takeing over the world like the rest of the enemies of constitution out there.so that is why the uppercuts of the world call the terrorists innocent civilians.you know like those civilians in the planes who were fighting the passengers to keep the plane safe, but the passengers defeated them and brought the planes down to make the muslims look bad.now the innocent mbh in egypt wants to blowup the pyramids.and i’m tolled that islam is not trying to march across the planet.and benghazi, remember benghazi.

You liberals should never be in charge of anything military, you are dumber than rocks and couldn’t fight your way out of wet paper bag with a knife. You are cowards who are so lazy, you would rather sit on your asses and have someone tell you what to do and think.

yeah umm VANCYBOY? Israel tried harsh language but Hamas and Hezbollah didn’t react.
By the way…can you provide for a copy of leaflet dopped by Hamas or Hezbollah warning Israeli civilians to get out of the way of their rockets?
      I’ll be waiting champ.

      Israel must fire back. Why?

If you ignore a rocket attack, next time they will send 2 rockets. Then after that, if there is no response, the Palestinians will fire 4 rockets. Then 8, 16, and so on.

      @M13

Lies? Well, let’s examine the points I made:
1)”The Israeli response…was to send indiscriminate tank fire into Gaza, killing 4 civilians.” Link:http://tinyurl.com/csg25dy
      2) “Israel has fired on hospitals, UN posts and journalists.” You can do the work on these. Google is your friend.
3)”You can find testimony from ex-IDF members detailing the abuses by the Israeli military and police” Link:http://tinyurl.com/chnznzu You can also find many video on youtube of ex-IDF soldiers telling their stories.
4)”The IDF has used children as shields.” Link:http://tinyurl.com/lbwwyd
5)”An American was run over by a bulldozer while protesting against Israeli occupation” her name was Rachel Corrie–look her up.
6)”Israel is currently in contravention of several UN security resolution with their occupation.” Link:http://tinyurl.com/2lo882 (a list of UN resolution concerning Israel.)
      7)”Baruch Goldstein, a mass-murderer…” Google him.
      8.)”Their was a video released a few years back…” Link:http://tinyurl.com/br8p8cz

Since it’s only dead Israelis, will CNN even report on this? Well, I guess they might eventually, after their “Israelis Died!” rave party winds down later this afternoon.

Obama has put this country in a position of not backing Israel, thus, turning this nation as a whole against God and his will.

For the first time in my life I am not so proud of America’s choices.

i like how the story leaves out the dead civilian count in Gaza and the land, sea, and air massacre that is taking place on the most densely populated place on earth. Gaza is also the worlds largest concentration camp. Yeah, the dark side of occupation that refuse to see.

Gaza women have the 3rd highest obesity rate in the world. Gaza Receives Thousands of Tons in Goods and Materials
living is good in a Palestinian refugee camp, courtesy of the BBC
The poverty rate in Gaza is 16% – roughly equal to Spain, Germany and California. Gazans receive more free food aid per month per capita than anyone else in the world, including those living in famine-stricken regions. The average Somali, for example, receives seven times less in aid. The average Zimbabwean, with a life expectancy of 46, also receives about seven times less in food aid than the average resident of Gaza – who has a life expectancy of 73 (even higher than in Russia, Malaysia and neighboring Egypt).
While Palestinians shows one side to gullible visitors and the international media, Western taxpayers are actually subsidizing something entirely different.

How kid of our “Dear Leader” to allow Israel to defend itself. I just worry when Israel runs out of ammo, what will happen then? Will our Dear leader sell them more? Hope they are armed enough to wipe them all out.

God bless Israel. You will be vilified by the world for defending yourself against your constant enemies. It doesn’t matter. Do as you must.

Keep Israel in your prayers. Pray for their leaders and soldiers. Pray for the people.

    God’s will be done.

The guilty ones are those countries who combined to take Palestine from the Palestinians and then give it to people who immigrated to that land and became european converts to judaism, an that why you continue to see this warring going back and forth among these people, and i guess the conditions that the palestinians are living under are no different than the conditions the real south africans who lived under Aparthied! It’s no wonder such a situation is continuing, seemingly with no end in sight!

Did you ever stop to consider that it might be Gods active will that isreal not have any peace because of the way it was created by partitioning it to suit the european converts to judaism who were coming as immigrants? So why blame a people who’re simply fighting for their right to live. The isrealis havent had any peace in 62 years and she will never have any peace because there can be no peace as long as injustice, thievery, lying and deceit and using Gods Holy Name to shield your dirty religion under his Holy and righteous name is in vogue!! Those are the words of Farrakhan from 1984, and they still ring true today!!

MOMRULES, LOL, I do know what you mean. There are a few names here that once I see them I just gloss over their posts, and move on. When I first read some of THE_JERK’s very early posts, I found myself agreeing with some of what he said. I originally started calling him NAVIN originally in a joking manner because that was the name of the Steve Martin character in the 1979 movie The Jerk. Now, I do not care if he takes offense or not. I generally see him as an agent provocateur when it comes to Israel and Jews.
