Is Porn Becoming a Potentially-Hazardous Part of Mainstream College Curricula in America?

There’s a fascinating new report in WORLD Magazine about a phenomenon called “porn curriculum.” The term refers to explicit material that is making its way into America’s college and university classrooms. While the notion may seem too bizarre to be true, some experts claim that there is, indeed, an influx of pornography being integrated into secular professors’ curricula.
Earlier this year, TheBlaze did report about one anecdotal example — the allegation that Fresno State Public Health Professor Peggy Gish showed her students “Advanced Sexual Techniques, Volume One,” a video that touts sexually-explicit audio and video messaging. But according to WORLD, this isn’t an isolated incident.
The Christian magazine claims that, at New York University in New York City, New York, students have discussed pornographic comic books for a course called “Anthropology of the Unconscious.” At Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, too, students have delved into sexual topics for a class entitled, “Doing it, Getting it, Seeing it, Reading it.”
And not to outdo the other examples, but the WORLD report claims that a class at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, once offered a course called “Pornography: Writings of Prostitutes.” If the name of the class still leaves you with doubts about what’s covered, consider that students were asked to create their own pornographic work for their final projects. While the class isn’t currently listed on the college’s web site, past media coverage will provide you with an overview of content.
While these courses may seem bizarre, the idea behind them is that they allegedly help prepare students for a world in which they will encounter graphic art, ideas and other related phenomena. By exposing pupils to these ideas early on, the notion is that they are then better prepared to contend with them in the real world.
But evangelical anti-porn groups and Christian scholars believe that the porn industry can be explored and analyzed without simply making young people comfortable with the explicit and potentially-addicting imagery that is presented.
“A healthy study of human sexuality and the human body in a biblical context is the best way to approach issues related to pornography,” explained Covenant College psychology professor Kevin Eames. ”It provides a basis of comparison by demonstrating the good against the counterfeit, which is what pornography is…I treat pornography in the category of illegitimate pleasures that can be addictive and that is a counterfeit for both sexual intimacy and true joy.”
Despite some push-back against porn in the classroom, many students embrace it — as do their faculty — as a form of art. WORLD has more about the extent to which adult materials have made their way into U.S. classrooms:
A growing number of scholars are pushing the study of porn in a variety of academic fields, from literature to film, law to technology, and anthropology to women’s studies. Last year, 50 schools offered courses that included in-depth pornography content. The list of schools promoting porn in the classroom includes many of the nation’s most prestigious secular colleges-NYU, Yale, Harvard, Columbia and Berkeley.
Read more about the “porn curriculum” and its potential negative effects over at WORLD.

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 10:35amTHere is a huge difference between studying anatomy which includes the obvious-
and cloaking behaviour and science in a porngraphic context. The latter has been the norm for many years; it has just surfaced because many more are vocal, both for and against. Most schools are lewd peddlers of base thought (leftist propaganda) so why not include the ‘hite’ report as quality curriculum?
I am not convinced however that the ‘biblical’ approach is the answer- you cant have ‘unbelievers’ teaching what is abnormal to them-would not be a sane approach, nor should you expect them to understand. The porn issue is not necessarily spiritual, but moral. My conscience tells me it is wrong to lust after my neighbors wife- there is a built in mechanism that convicts me, no chapter and verse needed. By the way, they with bibles have been known to be the greatest offenders. Porn is an equal opportunity snare.
Agreed, porn has destroyed minds and lives, and honesty is the best antidote.

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 10:31amIt appears to me that our institutions of higher learning are selling pornography to their students. How much training does it take to teach a class on pornography? I can find professors to teach pornography at any state or federal prison. Our colleges are charging students for classes on pornography: What’s next? How about we replace porn classes with successful marriage courses, and teach our impressionable minds with courses on how to treat a spouse with kindness and how to create a successful marriage that lasts a life time?

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 11:07amIt ALL STARTS WITH PARENTS(2) TEACHING THEIR CHILDREN AT HOME. I was taught what “study” was and how to use it during life…BY MY 2-PAERENTS!! I started kindergarten knowing how to study and to practice “remembering” and useing what I learned. Early-on, many of my “friends” did-homework and played-only after each schoolday! I read magazines about cars and electronics, and some science and sciencefiction! As I grew-up, I saw many “fictions” become commonplace…and some of my past-friends join gangs, loot, steal, and pillage! These had NO extra money beyond their allowances(besides what they could steal). I had “sidejobs” after school and some weekends and was substanually grattified with some extra cash for new biketires and better lunches at school(etc). Though my life I have taught a few kids and older-people many “how-to’s” to give them a “hobby” or fix their own stuff(while observing all proper proceedures). A few months ago, I recived an e-mail from a friend who said:”Guess what I just fixed on my tube-stereo!!…and IT WORKS!!”

I’m sorry that you don’t understand our position on the destructive nature of pornography and how horrible of a sin it truly is.
One of our recent Prophets described it like this:
“Pornography robs its victims of self-respect and of an appreciation of the beauties of life. It tears down those who indulge and pulls them into a slough of evil thoughts and possibly evil deeds. It seduces, destroys, and distorts the truth about love and intimacy. It is more deadly than a foul disease. Pornography is as addictive and self-destructive as illicit drugs, and it literally destroys the personal relationships of those who become its slaves…it should be avoided like the deadliest of plagues.”
I have serious doubts as to the validity of your averments, However, it is true that certain members of EVERY religion have fallen prey to the temptation of pornography. If so, they should immediately repent and “go, and sin no more.” (John 8:11).

Seriously, its very irresponsible to simply say thing with not citations or foundation. I just did a quick internet search on your averment that Utah has the highest teen suicide rate – and the website I found places Utah at #36 not #1.
http://www.statemaster.com/graph/hea_tee_dea_rat-health-teen-death-rate
Since Alaska has the highest teen suicide rate and the top religions there are protestant and evangelical christians — will you still make the same averment? If so, your logic is faulty; if not, your bias has been exposed.

However, the point of my reply still stands; you can’t blame the most popular religion for all the problems in that area (i.e. chicago’s largest general religion is Christianity… so should Christianity be blamed for the extremely high rate of murder there???)

And trust me, there are just as many, if not more, degenerates in Utah then in any state or city out there. There are freaks coming out of the woodwork in Salt Lake city.

We Texas Mormons are strong.
We had a member from Nauvoo (a town Joseph Smith founded) visiting our ward and he told me something along the lines of, ‘Wow, you guys are on it down here!!’
I can’t speak for all the wards or stakes, but our area is doing just fine,
There are a lot of ‘social’ Mormons, but don’t worry: there are many more who take it seriously and live accordingly – especially here in Texas.
BTW, it goes to show that we aren’t the ‘dictatorial’ type of religion people think we are. We only teach the correct principles, it’s up to the individual to exercise their agency to conform.

I’m really tired of hearing about “Biblical” teachings. I get it. The Bible is really old and there are many teachings that are appropriate simply because they are time-trialed and humans haven’t really changed in thousands of years. That is great, but there are many people who are turned off by the whole Bible thing, especially college students. Can’t the Blaze drop the religious crap and present a counter argument that is sensible and non-religious? Really, the best you guys can muster is some guy from a Christian College?

This article could have explored or mentioned more on peer reviewed studies of the effect of porn and if such destructive aspects are being explored in these curriculum. If these are elective courses in Sociology or Psychology then they might be appropriate for someone looking to pursue a degree in marriage therapy, or general or even criminal psychology. Unfortunately I have the sneaking suspicion that more than a handful of these courses are merely an opportunity for sick and twisted minds to have a perverted hayday with impressionable co-eds as an audience.

Just imagine a world where young adults thanks to our college professors are indoctrinated and taught in what is proper thinking on sexuality, acts, benefits, options….
How much a year will I be paying for my young adult children to be told what their views on such a private matter should be?
I know this sort of education is exactly what my children will need to be a huge success in the future of this our country! So proud we have professors out there who truly get that preparing and educating our adults of tomorrow for the challenges they will face in this nation is priority!!!

The puritanical stance that the discussion of sex in a non private setting is wrong is just wrong. These are colleges, with adults, learning about an adult subject. There is nothing wrong with it and hopefully it will give some students a better understanding of human sexuality. Open discussions about sex will help free many from the guilt instilled in them from religion. It’s another example of unfettered dissemination of information being the enemy of extremist religious views.

The guilt you speak of is called a ‘conscience’…
Our bodily lusts, appetites and emotions are not to control us, rather we are to control them.
As we learn self-control, we become better people; we gain confidence in ourselves, trust from others, and a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be human.
Many religions are man’s quest for perfection. Of these, many preach control over the body, not submission to it.
That is the source of true joy and happiness, as opposed to pleasure; to act, and not be acted upon.

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 9:35amVAMAN I know kids who were home school and when they went to public high school they had 3.5 GPA and an 3.65 GPA and one was on the honor court. Heck my sister was home schooled instead of middle school and got on the Who’s who in High school with a 3.25 GPA. If I understand correctly your saying homes schooled kids are illiterate I believe your mistaken. Put a kid who was seriously home schooled next to a public school kid (remember the seriously qualifier) most of the time the home schooled kid is more advanced in studies.

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 9:41am@vanman, “…a study drawing data for the 2007-2008 school year from multiple standardized testing services. Once again, the national average percentile scores were higher [for home schooled children] in all subject areas by at least 34 percentile points, and as high as 39 percentile points. Factors such as parental college degrees, how much parents spent on education, level of state regulation, and sex of the students made little difference in the range of scores in all areas among the homeschooled children. ”
Illiteracy is a major problem for those that shuffle their children off to the State to be educated. The teachers protesting in Chicago had the wonderful distinction of having 80% of their students lag behind in reading skills and comprehension. I would also hazard a guess that public school children commit crimes and engage in sexual promiscuity, deviancy, and illicit substance abuse at rates that are astronomical compared to home schooled children.

Posted on November 15, 2012 at 10:00amVAMAN, home schooled kids are by far much more intelligent than any kid going through the federal education system. The proof is in the pudding bud.
