Report: Petraeus Clashed With Agency Chiefs Over CIA’s Portrayal in Libya in Final Days Before Resignation

David Petraeus’ final days as CIA director were marred by strained relations with other U.S. agency chiefs over how the CIA should respond to mounting criticism regarding the Sept. 11 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The retired four-star general “wanted his aides to push back hard and release their own timeline” of the assault on the U.S. diplomatic compound and nearby CIA safe house, in order to “set the record straight and paint the CIA’s role in a more favorable light.”

(Related: Intelligence Officials Provide New Detailed Timeline for Libya Attack)

National Intelligence Director James Clapper, the Pentagon and other agencies opposed the idea but Petraeus directed his aides to proceed, the Journal reported:

As questions mounted, a Fox News report Oct. 26 alleged that the CIA delayed sending a security force to protect U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and others who were under attack. Mr. Stevens and three other Americans died.

The CIA denied the report, then began pulling together its own timeline of events.

The Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies objected to Mr. Petraeus’s decision to mount a solo defense. “We conveyed our objections. Multiple agencies did,” a senior military official said.

Mr. Petraeus’s decision to release the CIA’s timeline to the press didn’t sit well with Mr. Clapper, who was unaware it would be made public, officials said. Other agencies saw Mr. Petraeus’s decision as a step aimed at presenting the CIA and Mr. Petraeus in the best light and forcing them to accept the brunt of the criticism.

Petraeus resigned last week after admitting to having an extramarital affair. He has told HLN’s Kyra Phillips that his resignation had nothing to do with Benghazi and was solely related to a “personal failing.”

Petraeus is set to testify about the Libya attacks before the House Intelligence committee Friday during a closed-door hearing.

Fox News military adviser and former Navy Captain Chuck Nash discussed the Journal report:

Alan Keyes is a good man… pointing out the truth that this country is in great danger. This tragedy in Benghazi will be used in the media to distract what is truly happening. Even if obama were to be impeached (which is an honor to a democrat), the democrat lead senate would let him go just as they let clinton go, humiliating the process.

Petraeus will not say anything that will paint the Obama administration in a negative light, truth or not. He will do his best to answer questions in a general and vague way that will leave only more questions. No one will be held accountable. Obama will blame ‘intelligence” and in a year most people will forget all about it. In the event someone does get thrown under the bus to take the fall it will not be the responsible party, ie Scooter Libby.

Let’s talk about the other fork in the road, shall we?

Petraeus goes before the Congressmen and Senators in the morning and admits that he lied to them to protect the administration three days after the event. He then tells them that he knows we were up to our butts in gunrunning to Syrian elements of Al Qaeda and the MB. he further says that we have actually supplied jihadist recruits to the “dump Bashar al Assad effort in Syria.”

Then you have to decide who you’re going to believe. Obammie wouldn’t lie to us, would he?

Is this administration trying to black mail the general with the top security info found on Paula’s computer, and in her home. Patreaus says he didn’t give it to her, he even did an interview (the only one so far) stating he never gave her any of it. Apparently he wants that truth out there, before he testifies.
I just can’t get my head around why Paula took top security papers home with her???? For what reason? And why was she so willing to let the FBI into her home to retrieve them, makes no sense…… Unless it was to blackmail Petraeous, and if she went along she gets a plea deal.
Were there really top secret papers in her home, and on her computer, or is it just another lie????

Since 4 Americans died, Petraeus cannot possibly say that all is well. The suggestion that Obama has threatened Petraeus’ family if he doesn’t lie is so ridiculous it doesn’t warrant any response at all. That Americans tied to terrorism are being extrajudically killed in foreign countries is the case, and does at the very least deserve spirited legal/constitutional challenge.
