What Steps Is This Fla. Restaurateur Taking to Offset the Cost of Obamacare? Hint: It Will Cost You

Obamacare Fallout: Restaurateur John Metz Announces That he will Be Adding a Five Percent Surcharge to Customers Bills and Slashing Employee Hours to Offset Healthcare Costs

Florida restaurateur John Metz, who operates about 40 Denny’s locations and five Hurricane Grill & Wings franchises across Florida, Virginia, and Georgia, says that he will be adding a five percent surcharge to customers’ bills to help offset the cost of the Affordable Care Act (i.e. “Obamacare”).

“People are trying to find ways to avoid the penalties and to avoid having to pay for ObamaCare,” John Metz told FoxNews.com. “Everyone’s looking for a way to not have to provide insurance for their employees. It’s essentially a huge tax on all us business people.”

But that’s not all.

As CEO of RREMC Restaurants, LLC, Metz says he will also have to slash the hours of roughly 1,200 employees to fewer than 30 hours per week.

He will make the announcement next month.

“I want to explain it to everybody, to let them know what’s coming down the pike,” he said. “We like to keep our employees informed.”

The changes will no doubt force some of his employees to look for a second job, FoxNews.com notes, but Metz maintains that he has no other choice.

“It’s a great concept,” Metz said of President Obama’s landmark healthcare law. “We want to have everyone insured. The problem is, who is going to pay for it and how are we going to accomplish this?”

And just in case you don’t remember some of the “finer” details of “Obamacare,” here’s a refresher:

Under the current law, employers with more than 50 full-time (or equivalent) workers will be charged a penalty for the number of employees exceeding 30 full-time staffers who are not covered.

With an average of 35 full-time employees per location, Metz said the $2,000 penalty would total roughly $70,000 per restaurant. Current coverage costs Metz up to $6,000 annually per full-time employee, he said. He currently provides coverage to about 250 employees.

“It’s going to be a big issue for all of us — for my employees and for me,” said Metz. “The ones that are working more than 28 hours, they’re going to act as if I’m cutting their hours and they’ll have to find another job.”

Metz is probably correct when he says other restaurants will adopt to his policies — that is, adding surcharges and slashing hours.

“That is what I foresee and that is the easier, least painful way to deal with these added costs,” he said. “In a true playing field, everybody will impose this, from McDonald’s to Denny’s to even maybe the fine dining restaurants in order to have the funds to be able to pay for either insurance or the penalty for not providing insurance to their employees.”

Metz has encouraged his staff to contact their elected officials to see if there are other ways in which the costs of implementing “Obamacare” can be offset.

“It’s never good news, but it is what it is,” Metz said in reference to his five percent surcharge. “We really should look for a better or different way to pay for [ObamaCare]. I think what we’re going to ultimately see here is a European-type system where we have a value added tax or a national sales tax.”

“I have a choice: try to live within the rules, or go out of business,” he added.

While Metz claims that he has no other choice but to add surcharges and slash hours, and that he believes others will follow suite, the National Restaurant Association claims that is “premature” to try to assess the financial burden “Obamacare” will put on businesses.

We have warned for some time that the mechanics of the health care law are very difficult for the restaurant industry, which is a low-margin industry that works to keep costs down in order to provide value to customers.

All costs, from gas and commodities to labor and insurance, eventually impact the price on the menu. It is important that operators get very familiar with the provisions of the law and start planning for its implementation; however, it’s premature to make a specific assessment of exactly how the law will affect any individual business because there are so many details that are unknown.

Just wait, tonight Chrissy Matthews will be on screaming that once again Denny’s is proven to be racist for daring to try to stay in business to keep those employed in jobs, albeit for shorter hours, and despite the rising customer cost brought on by Ocare…

  So, I decided to go to Denny’s and when the bill comes,
  I’ll tip the waitress 10% instead of 20%.

  All of the comments being made here seem to leave out one very important factor in this equation. The employees. The individuals doing the actual work that brings in the revenue. I am quite sure Mr. Metz is not a poor man, and I am even more sure that he isn’t the one cooking the food or serving it. His employees are a large part of the reason this man has the income he does. How about recognizing the fact that there are two sides to the equation? The ownership/labor relationship is symbiotic in nature, neither one surviving without the other. I realize this concept is a bit too tough for some to understand. Quite frankly, I am getting a bit tired of the “poor old downtrodden millionaires” meme.

  The concept isn’t difficult to understand. And when it remains a private two party relationship usually things go fairly well. The problem with government programs, including the Patient Affordable Care Act, is that they insert a third party into the relationship. The unwelcome insertion of the government has historically ruined the symbiosis between the first two parties that you so correctly point out as essential to survival. ObamaCost – I created a Facebook page with the goal to petition all business owners that are implementing a surcharge to offset ObamaCare costs, to include this surcharge as a separate line item on their receipts. We should all know what we are really paying for this program.

  Actually, Socialist, I own a business, and it is not my first one.
  
  Think about this carefully:
  
  Where do businesses get the money that they pay to the IRS?
  
  If you said “From their income” your are correct.
  
  Where do businesses get their income from?
  
  If you said “From their customers” you are, again, correct.
  
  So if the government demands an increase in tax from business, how do they meet that bill?
  
  If you said “They must charge their customers more or they will go broke” you are right again.
  
  Ergo; the government taxes businesses, but businesses don’t pay it. Their customers do.
  
  It makes good propaganda for the government to say that they are going after the rich companies, but the government and the companies both know where the money is really coming from.

I love this guys idea! I think Republican business owner (which is probably most businesses) should begin printing reciepts or bills with a line item that says “Obamacare Tax” and explicitly let everyone know they are paying for this.

  It’s right in the article if you bother to read it. Metz already pays $6,000 per emplyee that he insures. He currently insures 250 employees. Probably managers and corporate types.
  
  He averages 35 employees per store and owns 40 stores. Multiply $6,000 x 40 x 35 = $8,400,000 per year
  
  I just did your thinking for you. You’re welcome. Oh, and look, it’s not going to cost very much. I’m sure Mr. Metz is just a big, mean Capitalist pig who doesn’t care about his employees OR his consumers. That’s why he doesn’t want to pay for healthcare for those employees. Well DUUUUH ! It comes as a complete surprise that businesses will be forced too pass the cost of Obamacare along to their customers. Only Odumber supporters are unaware that many government regulations and mandates add to the cost of consumer goods and services. When the NET profits of most businesses range to a few cents on the dollar , it deesn’t take a genius to determine that any
excess burden makes it difficult for many smaller businesses. No doubt a number of young peopel who voted for Obama attend college. They scream at at anyone who proposes raising tuition or interest on student loans, yet they find it difficult to understand why increasing the cost of anything
on private businesses reduces profit margins.

I personally think that all businesses should tag in separate context the cost of government bricks on all the products that they sell. Break out that number and lets take a look at it. The government likes to hide their handy work in the products of sellers like they don’t exist,bring it, lets see if the liberals can live with it in their face. I applaud them. Why is it that only conservatives pay attention to this crap.

I’m applying for all the assistance I can get. Food stamps, welfare, disability, whatever I can get. I’ll donate it all to a (very right wing) charity. If the Left can steal from me then I can steal it back. Hopefully this will accelerate the inevitable crash so we can bury the old US and establish a new one on the grave of our once great nation.

It’s the greedy Dr.s who are to blame. I went to Kaiser for a routine blood pressure check with no complaints no other problems and the Dr. billed a 99204 exam. Google a 99204 exam and see what level of complexity and decision making are required for a 99204 exam.

Are you being followed for glaucoma? I’d get a second opinion on that if I were you. That’s an easy one for greedy Dr’s to make cash on. Seeing you over and over, doing all sorts of money making tests when you eye pressure is not high and your optic cup is flat.

But look on the bright side..they may be paying more for food at Denny’s and 1200 staff members just go their hours reduced..but at least they can have unfettered abortions and Obama “understands” them better than Romney does. Every time government drives up the cost to do business, the business world raises their cost to cover it. Then everyone pays for more expensive goods and services and that reduces their disposable income.
Liberals just can’t seem to grasp that simple concept. That is why so many companies have moved offshore. They can’t compete when liberals keep increasing their overhead.

By the time the National Restaurant Association gets around to “assessing” the effects of massive complicated burdensome regulation, it will be far to late for most restaurants. I hope they label it on the receipts “ACA Taxes” or at the very least, “Government Mandate Fees”.

  If you think about it though hyperinflation will take out all businesses anyway so it doesn’t really matter. The ironically named ‘affordable health care law’ will kill millions of jobs we all know this but hyperinflation will keep us down for many many years.

  It all depends on how and when the inflation hits. Will it be a sudden burst like Germany, or a slow drawn out debacle, with the politicians blaming everything under the sun but fascist centralized idiocy? If they draw it out past 2014 (which they might be able to, personally I didn’t think they would be able to delay it as long as they already have), you will see many businesses having to deal with the ObamaCare poison and either folding up shop or wildly changing the way they do business. On top of it all, nothing in the Obamacare BS will prevent radical inflation in the healthcare industry. They sold our soul for what they thought were magic beans, but are they’re just rocks instead.

  History continues another 40,000 years after this cycle ends actually. The Mayan calendar is full of major and minor cycles, and 2012 is the end of a minor cycle. There are others after that, and nowhere is it mentioned that humanity dies off.
