House Women: Clear Sexism and Racism Behind GOP Attacks on Susan Rice

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican senators’ angry criticism of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice over her initial account of the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Libya smacks of sexism and racism, a dozen female members of the House said Friday.

In unusually personal terms, the Democratic women lashed out at Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham who earlier this week called Rice unqualified and untrustworthy and promised to scuttle her nomination if President Barack Obama nominates her to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“All of the things they have disliked about things that have gone on in the administration, they have never called a male unqualified, not bright, not trustworthy,” said Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, the next chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus. “There is a clear sexism and racism that goes with these comments being made by unfortunately Sen. McCain and others.”

At a Capitol Hill news conference, the female lawmakers, the majority of them African American like Rice, suggested that the Republicans are bitter about Obama’s re-election and taking it out on U.N. ambassador.

“To batter this woman because they don’t feel they have the ability to batter President Obama is something we the women are not going to stand by and watch,” said Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis. “Their feckless and reckless speculation is unworthy of their offices as senators.”

For weeks, the criticism of Rice has focused on her comments about the Libya attack. The lawmakers’ contention that the ambassador’s race and sex are factors come just over a week after an election when women and minorities heavily favored Obama and Democrats.

The Democratic women directed particular ire against McCain, who said Rice was “not being very bright” in her comments. The women pointed out that Rice was a Rhodes scholar who graduated tops in her Stanford class whereas McCain was in the bottom of his class at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Spokesmen for McCain and Graham had no immediate reaction to the remarks.

In a separate appearance after a briefing on Libya, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the growing criticism of Rice “is almost as if the attempt is to assassinate her character.”

At issue are Rice’s statements in a series of television interviews five days after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Republicans insist that she should have labeled the incident an act of terrorism rather than cite a protest over an anti-Muslim video that had roiled cities in the Middle East.

Rice said at the time she was providing the “best information and the best assessment we have today.”

“In fact this was not a preplanned, premeditated attack. That what happened initially was that it was a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired in Cairo as a consequence of the video,” she said. “People gathered outside the embassy, and then it grew very violent. Those with extremist ties joined the fray and came with heavy weapons, which unfortunately are quite common in post-revolutionary Libya, and that then spun out of control.”

CIA acting director Mike Morell has told congressional committees this week that Rice was relying on an initial intelligence assessment that eventually proved incorrect. Former CIA Director David Petraeus told congressional committees Friday that Rice’s comments “reflected the best intelligence at the time that could be released publicly,” according to Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a lawmaker who attended the session.

The female House members argued that Rice would have no motivation to mislead the American people.

At a Wednesday news conference, McCain, Graham and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., had called for a special Watergate-style committee to investigate the Libya attack. McCain and Graham leveled their criticism at Rice, drawing a rebuke from Obama a short time later who said they should go after him, not the U.N. ambassador.

The Democratic women also contrasted McCain and Graham’s criticism with their defense of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who had warned of weapons of mass destruction in pressing for war in Iraq that killed more than 4,400 Americans. No weapons of mass destruction were found.

“It’s interesting to me that we’re not discussing another Rice who went before all of the Sunday talk shows some years ago,” said Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill.

The Democratic women demanded that McCain and Graham retract their criticism.

“It is a shame that anytime something goes wrong, they pick on women and minorities,” Fudge said.

Said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C.: “We will not allow a brilliant public servant’s record to be mugged to cut off her consideration to be secretary of state.”

      We have already had Rhodes Scholars in public office and they are nothing to boast about ..Republican or Democrat.

      As to Gwen Moore…Gwen is a textbook M1A mouthpiece for “I’m a Victim…I’m, a Victim.”

      There is no war on women out here Gwen..it is all just cheap politics for votes.

      What they are doing here is laying the groundwork for Susan Rice to testify. They can then claim discrimination in the media and then Susan Rice plays through on soft ball questions because the panel is afraid of Racism and Sexism. THe media can then begin crying the same mantra and silence public dissent as well as the panel..ie…censorship. These are a bunch of women shills…being turned loose with the mantra of the “Usual Suspects” using and misusing Victimhood.

      Agree with one of the other posters…you are the UN Ambassador…stand on your own feet…not someone else’s feet. A Rhodes Scholar can do this…not cede to more Victimhood.

I am sick of talking about that worthless piece of crap Susan Rice anyway, why don’t you just tell us why the hell the ambassador was there without full security and why there wasn’t any help sent for the brave CIA agents who at least tried to save lives? And quit sending the white house parrot Geraldo Rivera on Fox News to say that there is nothing that could have been done in the amout of time that the attack lasted. I was in the military way too long to believe anything like that. The CIA agents had the attackers lit up with lasers, one F-16 loaded with smart bombs and guess what no more attackers.

      Rice is America’s UN Ambassador. That does not mean she is privy to any intelligence beyond what her superiors at State or the White House care to share with her.

      I would add that, whenever Americans are killed in a Muslim country, except perhaps in a random mugging or carjacking, “terrorism” is the default assumption, and does not need to be stated.

      Whether for for domestic political reasons, or for diplomatic reasons having to do with events then occurring beyond Benghazi, or some conbination of both, emphasis was placed on the notorious video in the weeks after September 11.

      None of this disqualifies Rice from consideration as Secretary of State, if he is nominated, however you may wish it did.

      Obama pointed out his own use of “terror” on September 12–or have we forgotten “Get the transcript,” which clearly shows that he did?

      Get over it: there is no further political capital to be extracted from Benghazi.

I don’t give a damn if you want to kill your babies or not, as far as I am concerned it is cleansing the gene pool, and that decision is between you and whoever you choose to call your maker but you aren’t going to do it with money from my pocket. As far as providing free birth control because you want to be a player do that on your own dime I don’t expect you to pay for mine, and especially wouldn’t expect a handout from a country that is running a 1.6 trillion dollar per year deficit.

    Well, who didn’t see this coming? Susan Rice is the recipient, like a–hole Obama, of Affirmative Action. She got her job because she is a female and who she knew. She deserves to be fired for lying to the American public…but lying is a job requirement for a Democrat.

    Statistically speaking, it is quite rare to have a group of women of that quantity in one location that not one person would want to have intercourse with. Quite remarkable.       I agree with you. No woman wants to do the job of being the nurturer, putting their family’s welfare first. Because of society demands, mothers have left the home. I won’t mention God, but as the “home goes so goes the nation,” our nation is in complete disarray.

      True that, guys. As a woman, it offends me to see other women behaving so un-womanly.

      My best life has been lived “in my place”. Nobody else can do what I can for my family. Women have clearly been decieved into thinking high position /power is of more value. No way.
