Teen Allegedly Denied Confirmation After Priest Sees Pro-Gay Marriage Facebook Post
Lennon Cihak, 17, was reportedly denied confirmation after the Rev. Gary LaMoine of Assumption Church in Barnesville, Minnesota, saw that the boy had placed a pro-same sex marriage post on Facebook. Considering that the Catholic Church opposes gay unions, the teen’s family claims that the house of worship punished Lennon for embracing ideas that run contrary to church theology.
In the wake of the alleged decision, the teen’s family is speaking out.
“You kind of know the Catholic beliefs, but I never thought they would deny somebody confirmation because you weren’t 100 percent,” Shana Cihak, the boy’s mother, told The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead. “I guess that’s what shocks me.”
On his Facebook page, Lennon posted an image of a political sign. Originally, the poster read, “Vote Yes: Marriage, One Man, One Woman,” however the message was altered to read “Vote No!,” with the words “Equal Rights” added to it with a marker.
The sign, in its original form, was intended to support the Minnesota Marriage Amendment, which would have refined the state’s constitution to define marriage between a man and woman (the alterations to the sign, though, clearly showed support for gay unions). The provision failed to pass earlier this month.

According to Shana, in a one-on-one meeting, Rev. LaMoine confirmed that the image was the reason for the church’s refusal to confirm Lennon. In a subsequent interview, she noted that she thinks it’s unfair that her son was singled out. Additionally, she told The Forum that other children in the same confirmation class “liked” the status, but that they were still allowed to be confirmed.
While Lennon’s father, Doug, also disagreed with the priest’s actions, he dubbed him a “messenger” of the church who is sticking by his convictions. As for Shana and her son, they do not plan on returning to the house of worship again. Considering their deep connection to the parish (Shana was confirmed at Assumption Church as well), this is a noteworthy development.
Despite the angst the family has felt over the incident, Lennon does not want to see anti-Catholic backlash run rampant.
“I don’t want the church to be put down. I don’t want the Catholic religion to be put down,” he explained. “It’s just the way the priest has things running. He’s so strict. He won’t loosen up about things.”
As for the Rev. LaMoine, the priest told The Associated Press that the family’s story isn’t entirely accurate. While he declined to give details, the faith leader said that it was an “internal and pastoral” matter and that Lennon was not denied confirmation as stated by the family.
“Some people chose to run out into the public and put it out in the media,” he said, noting that he is speaking with the Catholic Diocese of Crookston about the incident.

Now, how about ” hating your neighbor for a good cause…like he’s rich or is conservative or white ..” Can I have a show of hands ? ( sounds like what goes on at an OWS meeting. Scary . Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:34amCatholics generally are pretty a la carte about their faith, but in this case the priest has his positions and they’re known. Maybe he should look deeper into himself to find out why he’s shocked at this, why he’s expecting others to kowtow to his mindset instead of realizing if he wants to join, he needs to meet their standards. Or he can try a “Unity” church. They’re into that kinda thing.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 10:54amThe greatest influence in any child’s life is in their home. Whether it is a single parent or both. If these reprobate, apostate parents were teaching this confused child the truth about God’s word this issue would not be present. Good for the priest for doing the job of these worthless parents. Tell your children that Homosexual behavior, and sexual perversion will send you to Hell. It is an abomination to God to practice these things and I haven’t read anywhere that God has ever changed his mind on this.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 11:31amThen perhaps you should read the Bible. God does not rank our sins. The wages of sin is death, and all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God – perhaps even you Hanner. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. God loves us all, and all of us let Him down probably daily. Humble yourself before an awesome God – he is worthy of all your praise. The Catholic Church and any other Church, is run by faulted human beings. Most do their best to adhere to the tenents of their faith. Some are more tactful than others, some are really bad at it. Instead of a Church of “don’ts”, Christ began a Church of “do’s.” Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight. He asks that we love others as we love ourselves. Sometimes love means sharing the truth. This young man seems to want us to call his sin acceptable, yet no sin is acceptable to God. It is not the way God wants you to live your life, and if you look, you will find that He has provided you a way out from under your temptation. Follow Him and you will have life more abundantly.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 11:53amIt may be a moral issue but it is not a criminal issue and certainly not one with any victims like your other examples of stealing or hate crimes. It’s a moral issue for you, but for many other people in this country, gay marriage is not immoral. Many people do not believe in the teachings of Christianity. These sorts of people should not be held back by morals that belong to a religion that they do not practice.
No one in this country is forcing you to pray to Mecca five times a day, abstain from eating pork, or abstain from alcohol. Many other people around the world would deem that immoral. Religious morality is subjective and must not be enforced through federal law.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 12:57pmYo Sparky, “God does not rank our sins.” Really? Then what is this? 1 John 5 – 16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
That scripture sounds like a ranking to me.
“Church of don’ts” – You need to read Galatians 5, and many other writings of the Apostle Paul. He laid out a LONG list of dont’s for Christians.
This article was only dealing with the issue of Gay Marriage, and that is all that I addressed. Your rambling garbage went everywhere. Don’t try to school me on the bible when you don’t know what you are even talking about yourself. Save that FALSE DOCTRINE of Love for someone that does not know the bible.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 2:01pmI’m curious to know by what moral standard do we say one sin should be legal, but another sin should be illegal. Obviously acts of violence against one’s life, liberty, and property are illegal (i.e. theft, vandalism, murder, etc.), but non-violent acts such as homosexuality, adultery, drug addiction, and prostitution are not uniformly enforced throughout the world. If you say gay marriage, drugs, and prostitution should be outlawed then why not adultery? Why not outlaw divorce which is this not the number one cause of poverty and broken homes in our society? What about drunkenness? What about premarital sex? Does believing a certain immoral behavior should be legal mean that that person condones such immoral behavior. If you think sodomy should be legal does that mean you condone sodomy? If you think adultery or premarital sex should not be punished does that mean you condone adultery? By what what standard do we legislate God’s moral code? By what standard do we differentiate ourselves to be a country of liberty versus a country like the Islamic Republic of Iran that legislates every sin imaginable. Just curious.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 3:07pm@pdumar, et al: no one is trying to outlaw same sex marriage. To outlaw something means it must be possible. Two people of the same sex cannot marry because marriage is not based in emotion but fruitfulness & must be between the type of people who can be fruitful: man & woman. Marriage comes from Genesis 1:28: God blesses Adam & Eve & tells them to be fruitful & multiply. Lennon committed a sin. Sometimes the law & sin overlap. Often, especially these days, they do not so that abortion, which was illegal, is now legal but it is still a sin.
So why is the Church so strict about homosexual acts & not about something such as telling a lie? The Bible lists four sins that cry out to God for vengeance: murder (Gen 4:10), homosexual acts (Gen 18:20-21), the oppression of widows & orphans (orphans include the fatherless) (Ex 21-23) & oppressing labourers/cheating them of their just pay or not paying on time (Dt 24:14-15). Homosexual acts (not the feelings but the acts) cry out to God for vengeance. We don’t make the rules, we follow them. The difficulty is being a creature instead of the Creator. We didn’t create ourselves & haven’t the ability to know good & evil based on feelings; feelings lead us to do so much that is destructive. The priest followed the teachings of God & the Church – thanks be to God! The boy & his mom want to be exempt. It doesn’t work that way. One either follows God or one doesn’t – there is no in-between.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 4:04pmAlessandre, thank you for your thoughtful response. I agree with the Bible on moral issues as I’m a Christian myself. I mostly was postulating that does allowing a law that disagrees with the Bible the same as being complicit in condoning that behavior? I was then comparing that to other sins listed in the Bible that are not within the natural framework of the Creator and are perfectly legal and without controversy. For example Jesus himself taught that divorce was never the intention of the Creator yet God allowed Moses to grant divorce because of the hardness of people’s hearts (in the beginning it was not this way). If you look at causality the separation of the family has had a devastating impact on our society yet it’s perfectly legal. Other sins such as adultery and premarital sex are perfectly legal too. Are we complicit because we allow such behaviors to be legal or do we live in a free society where such non-violent behaviors should remain legal? I don’t have the answer but I know personally that I would rather live in a free society that allows certain citizens to engage in immorality that does not directly impact me than a moralistic society like the Islamic Republic of Iran that imprisons and puts to death all immoral behavior that is listed in the Koran. I know I just used two extremes there but I guess I’m trying to balance having lawful order and being a Pharisee. By what standard do we impose one Biblical law and not the other?

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 4:30pmYo Hanner, you seem to know superficial things but miss the boat. If you are free in Christ, you are free indeed. The things you called garbage were scriptures. Legalists can’t stand what Paul writes about our freedom. We are no longer under the law (well, perhaps you are). By the way, It was Jesus who said “The greatest commandment is to Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
But you are saying that either Jesus never said this or that or else he didn’t mean it or that is simply garbage. He also said “They will know you are my disciples by your love one for another. ” Evidently, you aren’t a disciple.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 4:38pmMorality is based of cultural relativism and what society around us accepts as ethical. Religion plays a large part in this, and has shaped what our society is today. Our abilities to reason and rationalize also plays a big part – and is key when discussing ethics and morality (if you are trying to be a fair rational person). If your reason for being against gay rights comes from an ancient religion, I would question your rationality. The kid is under the understanding people don’t choose there sexuality and should not be judged on it, and that the law is unfair. It’s not the end of the world. We used to think the world was flat.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 7:38pmYo Sparky – What I call garbage is your “interpretation” of the bible. 2 Timothy 3 – 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, REBUKING, CORRECTING and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. My love for others is expressed by telling them the things that will send them to Hell. Your limp-wristed false doctrine of love does not accomplish that. You might want to re-read John 14. Jesus equates Love with Obedience. You seem to have missed that. Or you think that Paul was wrong too.

Your legalism consumes you, and your hatred drives people away from God, believing that they surely don’t want to be such a judgemental person as you seem to be. Posted on November 17, 2012 at 4:35amWhether to not this fundamentalist has a right to deny him whatever is not really the issue. If he wants to be a hypocrite that is his own problem. The bigger picture of marriage equality is an issue that affects the lives of millions of Americans that are denied that right. Two people marrying does not in any way affect your lives at all. A church can have its own narrow minded view of things but that should have no bearing on the civil issue. Marriage offers 1,138 Federal benefits and responsibilities, not including hundreds more offered by every state. If you are opposed to marriage equality then there is only one thing you can do about it: don’t get gay married. However if you impose your religious views on those that do not agree with them, do not be shocked when, at some point, someone else imposes their religious views on you.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 5:36pmLet’s be clear on this, there will be NO gay people in heaven. If I make you mad by saying that, too bad. Argue with God about it, his word declares it. That is the problem with the church and many “christians” today……they have quit calling out sin. If nobody is naming sin anymore how are people going to know that they are sinning? God hates sin, and IS NOT tolerant of it. The Apostle Paul clearly states a lot of sinful behavior that WILL NOT make it to heaven. Homosexual behavior is definitely on that list. For the parents of this confused child to be “upset” with the Priest’s stand on this issue shows clear evidence that they do not believe in the churches teaching on this. Worse yet, they do not accept and believe in the bible’s teaching on this, or they would stand with the Priest instead of against him. SO again, I call them apostate and unbelieving for a good reason.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:47amConfirmation is the “adult” decision to accept Jesus as your Lord and savior as taught by the Catholic Church. If you do not accept that, you should not be confirmed. Confirmation is not just a ceremonial act. Confirmation to the Catholic Church is a big deal…it is equivalent to Protestants churches who only baptize adults. If you do not accept the teachings of the church there are plenty other “churches” that can meet your needs or you can start your own church. Many have.
For those of you who keep requesting excommunication.
The Catholic Church does not excommunicate anyone.
Code of Canon Law (CIC) abortion and eight other sins carry the penalty of automatic excommunication: apostasy, heresy, schism (CIC 1364:1), violating the sacred species (CIC 1367), physically attacking the pope (CIC 1370:1), sacramentally absolving an accomplice in a sexual sin (CIC 1378:1), consecrating a bishop without authorization (CIC 1382), and directly violating the seal of confession (1388:1).

If you aren’t ready to accept ANY faith in an “all or nothing” status, you will be a cafeteria person and that is not acceptable in any faith.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 8:59amYea Fr. LaMoine! It’s about time that a Catholic Priest started denying Sacraments to those who don’t believe/follow the truths of the Church. Also, I agree that those who “liked” his post should have been denied as well.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 8:59amGood for the Priest, it is about time that we teach these young people that your choices today can make a difference later in life, My own son can not drive because of multiple DUI’s and I wont give him a ride anywhere, I did take hime to the bike shop so he could buy himself a bike. He has at least another year before he gets to drive again, and while he did 120 days in county for his DUI’s I never went to visit, and I told him I wouldn’t.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 8:59amThe Catholic churches have Bible studies. If this boy had been reading and taught the word of God and the meaning and history of the Bible this would not have happened. The Priest needs to understand that he also failed this child. This is what is wrong with the Catholic church. They do not teach any of the meanings behind their faith so the peoples faith is weak. If you are a Catholic start reading the Bible or going to a Bible study so you can apply your faith to your life. The Catholic church is more “mystical” than practical.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:09amNo, it’s not the Priest who failed this kid. Years ago when the libs took education money from the Parochial schools, it started the dominoes to fall. His parents send him to Public School seven hours a day and he gets an hour of Mass on Sunday, then CCD for another hour or so.
I’m an aide in a Catechism class. Sometimes no matter how much information you give, the world wins

Where do you derive failure from this? The child was clearly taught the doctrine and was on his way to Confirmation. The Fr. is applying the lessons of the scripture right now, in full living color, for the boy to see. This is the teaching moment. No amount of words and lectures will stop some kids from having to touch the stove and get burned, to learn not to touch the stove.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:37amThe priest did not fail the kid. The kid failed himself. There’s only so much one can teach, at some point the onus is on the pupil to learn, if he refuses to learn then it’s on him.

Lamoine for taking his vow to the Catholic Church and her teachings seriously and not letting society get the best of him. God Bless You Fr. Lamoine. Posted on November 16, 2012 at 8:57amFirst off – Billy Hallowell, 17 is not a young boy.
Why is this a news story, other than an attempt to gain support for the young child as you put it? Although I am not part of that church I applaud them in keeping with God’s word. The so called parents want the appearance that their child is following God, however, are obvious wolves in sheep’s clothing. I am not shocked at this, it saddens me to see people that only want to use God and the church for their own pleasures. It is a good thing that they are leaving the church, however, the church should have taken the steps to see if they would repent, and if not, sent them away as Christ commands.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 8:46amThe priest did what he is supposed to do. Confirmation is supposed to confirm you believe the teachings of the Church ad bring the Holy Spirit down upon the person being confirmed to help him/her to live the faith and spread it to others. This young man obviously did not believe all the teachings of the Church, so the sacrament was denied for the time being. If he should decided he does the believe all the teachings of the Church, he can be confirmed later. I personally think those who “liked” his status should have their confirmation delayed or denied also since they were saying they agree with a teaching that is against the Church. Remember that no one is forcing anyone to be Catholic. If you don’t agree with the Church’s teachings, you should not pretend to be Catholic and you certainly shouldn’t receive the sacrament of Confirmation.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 1:13pmI totally agree 100%. That is what Confirmation is all about. If you don’t believe in the Church’s teachings then you are not ready for Confirmation. The Priest was right and I can’t believe the family would go public with this story.

Pro Gay? You can’t be confirmed. You can be a priest though.
They are seemingly against stealing unless it is government collectivist tyranny. In that case it’s all cool. They refer to Obama’s letter to the Clevelanders chapter 2 verse 3. “Taking from those with more is wrong unless you authorize it through the political process. If you follow these rules your crunk challis will runneth over with 8 ball and phones will not run out of minutes. This I promise you my children.”

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:00amYes, you can be homosexual and a Priest. Do you think that a homosexual Priest has any less temptation than a heterosexual Priest? All Priests are flawed human beings. They all have temptations. Taking the Priestly vows doesn’t make them superhuman and whether it’s stealing, beating someone or having sex, a Priest has the same temptations as any other man. Is one sin greater than another?
Now, the Priest’s job is to shepherd. This young boy is openly defying Catholic teachings. We know little of the background story except that in the end, the Priest did his job. He is not to give Sacraments to those who openly defy the church.
We all complain about Bishops who let Pelosi or Kennedy receive communion. Here is a Priest with a backbone. Kudos to him.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:05amHey Vyd,
Sure, I’ll leave them alone as soon as they leave us alone. How about a deal. The majority of catholics voted (and have voted) to enslave me by making me work for the benefit of others against my will. I’ll stop piling on Catholic hypocrisy when the Catholics agree that what I earn is mine. Deal?
And to your point. The Catholics could dress up in clown outfits and pray to Jerry Springer if they want to. Don’t care. Freedom let’s you do whatever you want. Perhaps you should expand the definition of freedom outside of the sanctuary no?

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 8:50amExactly! Biblical principles and church doctrine are not wish washy…..they don’t drift in the wind like democrat politicians, changing their views based on the issue of the day. I don’t want my priest to “loosen up”, I want him to know his faith, LIVE IT, preach it and hold his parishoners accountable. Believe what you want, but don’t expect your church to just “go with the flow.” Sheesh!

If the kid wants to take a stand, that’s his right and good for him. If the Catholic priest wishes to actually follow his creed and not give a pass to a kid actively flaunting the faith, that’s his right and good for him too. One will come out of this with a new lesson and outlook on life.
Non-issue.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:19amAye Gonzo, I absolutely agree. One can fail in his or her faith as an individual, and that requires soul searching, repentance and forgiveness, and I’d think that one could remain Catholic (not an expert on this of course, I may be wrong). But if you’re a nationally known political leader and you’re out daily screeching about how wonderful abortion and homosexuality are, and actively help pass laws endorsing those views, while claiming to be Catholic, that seems quite actionable from an excommunication perspective.
If the Church had real intestinal fortitude, they’d excommunicate Pelosi and the rest of the national level pretend Catholics in a very clear and firm way.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 10:00amExcommunication is the Church’s top judicial sanction and involves excluding a notorious sinner from communion with the faithful. It is intended as a warning to the sinner that he needs to repent. It isn’t a condemnation to hell.
The Church does not excommunicate, you excommunicate yourself. The people you want excommunicated have done so, automatically.
Excommunication means you are not in communion with the Church. If you don’t follow the teachings of the Church, you are not in communion. No ceremony is needed.
John Paul II spoke directly to Nancy Pelosi about her positions.
Excommunication is between the “believer” and God.
