The Twinkie Is Dead: Hostess to Close, 18K+ Layoffs Expected
No more Twinkies. No more Ho Ho’s. No more Wonder Bread. No more Ding Dongs.
Hostess is dead.
The company plans to go out of business, lay off its 18,500 workers, and sell its snack cake and bread brands. Hostess claims a nationwide strike crippled its ability to make and deliver its products.
“We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike,” said CEO Gregory Rayburn in a statement.
The Irving, Texas, company suspended bakery operations at all its factories and said its stores will remain open for several days to sell already-baked products.
The company had warned employees that it would file a motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to unwind its business and sell assets if plant operations didn’t return to normal levels by Thursday evening. The privately held company filed for Chapter 11 protection in January, its second trip through bankruptcy court in less than a decade.
“Many people have worked incredibly long and hard to keep this from happening, but now Hostess Brands has no other alternative than to begin the process of winding down and preparing for the sale of our iconic brands,” Rayburn said.
He added that all employees will eventually lose their jobs, “some sooner than others.”
Screen grab of Hostess’ website
“Unfortunately, because we are in bankruptcy, there are severe limits on the assistance the (company) can offer you at this time,” Rayburn wrote.
Thousands of members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union went on strike last week after rejecting in September a contract offer that cut wages and benefits. Hostess said Friday the company is unprofitable “under its current cost structure, much of which is determined by union wages and pension costs.”
Hostess has said that production at about a dozen of the company’s 33 plants has been seriously affected by the strike. Three plants were closed earlier this week.
Hostess had already reached a contract agreement with its largest union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
The company, founded in 1930, was fighting battles beyond labor costs. Competition is increasing in the snack space and Americans are increasingly conscious about healthy eating. Hostess also makes Dolly Madison, Drake’s and, Nature’s Pride snacks.
In memoriam:
Final Thought: Cheer up, guys. The Twinkie isn’t dead just yet. As Hostess CEO Greg Rayburn told CNBC this morning, the company is looking to sell its assets to the highest bidder. Provided they find a buyer, the Twinkie, Ding Dongs, Sno Balls, etc., will survive — just with a different company.
Now as for those 18,500 jobs, well, that’s a different story.

Right you are
From the Daily Kos:
“Our members know that the plans all along of the Wall Street investors currently in control of this company did not include the operation of Hostess Brands any longer than it takes to sell the company in whole—or in part—in a way that will maximize the profits of these vulture capitalists regardless of the impact on the workforce.
Workers were being asked to accept cuts, but top executives had gotten massive raises as Hostess was about to enter bankruptcy. Investments in the company’s future that had been promised as part of restructuring after the previous bankruptcy were never made. And as for the management, put in place by the private equity companies that now own Hostess, Hurt says:
Unfortunately however, for the past eight years management of the company has been in the hands of Wall Street investors, “restructuring experts”, third-tier managers from other non-baking food companies and currently a “liquidation specialist”. Six CEO’s in eight years, none of whom with any bread and cake baking industry experience, was the prescription for failure.
This is a Mitt Romney-style deal. Throughout the campaign, we read about Romney’s past deals that went very much like what’s happening to Hostess. Now we’re watching it in real time—and seeing how when workers fight back, they’re targeted for blame.”

4 top execs at Hostess had their salaries cut to $1 for one year..that’s right ONE DOLLAR in trying to get the company on better fiscal footing by Greg Rayburn who initially had come in to do the restructuring then became CEO.
The teamsters actually broke picket lines to return to work there but were stopped by other unions.
The unions imposed such ridiculous costs on the already embattled company as having to pay benefits to people who were not even Hostess employees simply because they came under agreements from other companies.
This is an entirely union made mess and I’m thrilled to see over 18000 unionistas reap what they’ve sown.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 11:46amUnion leaders would rather take the rank and file out on strike and risk job loss due to failure of the company than to lose control of the rank and file by allowing the rank and file to accept the deal they need in order to remain employed and for the company to remain viable.
As is always the case in these situations, the rank and file loses their jobs while the union leadership continues to draw their nice big paychecks and benefits packages. The union leadership then comes out publicly and tells the rank and file, and anyone else who they can get to listen (e.g. mainstream media) that the whole situation is the fault of ownership/management. And the minions believe it.
When people in this country wake up and realize who is paying the bills here, then this mindset will disappear and we can get back to being a productive nation. As long as the minions allow themselves to be played emotionally by the ‘powers-that-be’, things will continue on their current path.
It’s that simple.

They were interviewed by local media and said “this didn’t turn out like we planned”, “its a relief it’s over,” and “we are picketing in solidarity with other unions .”
A similar thing happened with a manufacturer of Winchester ammo. The union went so far as to tell the company they’d shut them down. Then the company threatened to shut down.
They settled the contract for 1 year and the company built a plant in a right to work state and will shut down when their NATO contract runs out.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 9:47amNZKIWI, Wow. And, I don’t mean this in way offensively. It is obvious that you have never dealt with our union mentality. About fourteen years or longer ago, a company that my wife worked for had to allow union leaders in to meet with their employees. During these meetings she was floored at how these reps bragged about putting other businesses out of business in a similar manner. During employee discussions afterwards she and some others spoke out against voting the union in. She and others were immediately threatened. I wrapped the back of the drivers seat in her Blazer with a PASGT vest that I had purchased earlier, and later inserted a heavy steel plate inside it to the rear of the seat. It wasn’t her truck, but somebody else’s vehicle had a shot fired through the rear to the front windshield.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 10:51amThe company my father worked for went on strike when I was a kid and we had to stay in a hotel for a few weeks because they were passing out flyers with the addresses of those they considered to be management. My father was no executive, but he worked in the drafting room and happened to wear a tie to work, therefore he was THE ENEMY. Homes and cars were pelted with eggs. The union got what they wanted out of the strike, for the moment. Ten years later the company moved all manufacturing to Mexico.

Oh come now. Union products are notoriously low quality. Remember American cars in the 1970′s? Yeah, real quality there.
The quality from non-union shops is quite high. I’m not saying that union shops can’t put out a good product, but to assume quality will go down because of unionization requires a leap of faith so grand as to require that one engage in slavish cultishness in order to make the span.

The people need to get real Marxism is a type of Utopia as we all know utopia’s can’t exist they are defined by ideals not logic, nature or prefaced by reality, in the instance of Marxism many horrific ideals. The reality is autocratic dictatorship, One or very few at the top outside elections deciding the fate of others while living well beyond the standard of living of the populace. They are just trying to create the modern day equivalent of Kings and Pharaohs and see if they can make an educated populace think it’s okay.

Posted on November 16, 2012 at 7:26pmRodenberry’s vision wasn’t a socialist society, and even in the 25th century, the military provided a role, but there was vision that mankind would put down his waring ways and instead look to science. Money did become obsolete, but there was still capitalism, representative governments and law, which was respected. If you watched the series, the totalitarians always tried to take over and force their view of what society should be and force “Perfection” on the whole. If you want to look at communism in Star Trek, just look at the Borg, they are all equal, except he Queen, they are a collective and they are one. Anyone that won’t be assimiated, is simply wiped out. The republic society is the one always trying to not interfer. So, if I were you, I would rewatch the series.

Wow. Articles (not a long one at that!) presented with the facts–and people are too lazy to read it (or maybe some can’t?). And instead–simply guess as to why events are happening. You don’t need to guess–the article gives the reasons why the company is closing!
In this case, sounds like legit competition–they were losing ground anyway–and then a strike by a union was the final financial straw for the company.
Sad, but in THIS case (I did NOT vote for Obama) – it’s not his fault.
However, with the general economy being the way it is–despite what O says–it’s on him–at least in great part!
