Caught on Video: Orca Whale Tails Swimming Dog in New Zealand

A diver and a dog got more than they bargained for when they found themselves incredibly close to several orca whales in New Zealand.
Video posted on YouTube this week shows the diver quickly scrambling onto the rocks as the fins approache and a black labrador that had been fetching sticks quickly paddling to the shore.
From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
Most likely neither the diver nor the dog were in danger from these killer whales because orcas are unknown to have ever intentionally harmed a human in the wild, nor attacked dogs either as far as I am aware β and these were most likely the fish eating type that specializes in hunting rays in the shallows around this part of New Zealand. Orcas pretty much stick to their accustomed menus, and human or dog are not on it; they just may be as curious about us as we are about them.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isnβt really about controlling guns at all; itβs about controlling us. Posted on November 17, 2012 at 5:18pmI’ve heard the same line of baloney about how wolves don’t attack people. If a person was unarmed and by himself who’d know because the remains would be eaten and scattered. In the case of an orca the same thing and even harder to find the remains.

Posted on November 19, 2012 at 7:03pmThey’re a wild animal, and are dangerous. I would never purposefully place myself in a hungry orcas path, however, I think what the quote meant was that orcas (just like wolf packs) are not vicious towards humans. They have no desire or reason to attack, so the relative danger was pretty insignificant.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 5:01pmThere was a video on you tube of a guy waving to a friend and two orca grabbed him. There is an orca at Sea World that has attacked three trainers killing them. They are not sweet little creatures!

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 3:30pmAnybody that thinks any animal has a menu that they won’t stray from is an idiot. I also love how so called experts are able to determine the intentions of animals so that they can make idiotic claims like no orca whale has ever “intentionally” attacked a human or a dog. The lengths people go to in order to decieve people about the harsh realities of nature is insane.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 2:47pmThe most amazing thing I ever saw was on a whale watching trip. The guide was amazed as well, they were speechless as the whales with babies in tow put on a show like they had never seen. They kept coming up to the boat (very close) looking at us, then the mothers would swim idle while the babies put on a show, I am not kidding. They jumped out of the water, turned, and flipped, it was amazing. The mothers would continually come up to the boat and with one eye look right at us. When they all swam away the guide came back on the speakers and said now that is something you only see on National Geographic, Did anyone caught it on video? Of course we were all so amazed only a few people got very blurry pictures.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 12:31pmYeah, sure Orcas are just fish eaters! Have you ever seen an Orca attack a seal? It is frightening. You better bet they would eat a human or a dog! They wait off the shore line for seals to go fishing and pick them and their babies off like flies. Who is this “expert?”

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 2:32pmOrcas tend to specialize, some are fish eaters and others mammal eaters, but there’s no guarantee whether they might go outside of their customary food group. The orca might have just been curious, or it could have been trying to decide if what it was following might make a nice snack.

Careful ..G56…That does not compute .. we need a video with sound before such claims.
and we all know that in the Animal kingdom, all Animals stick to their ” specialized foods”
I hear some Orcas only eat Squid. a la mode.. with a scoop of Clam Cream on top.
and we all know they never get sick, cuz if they did , well maybe they would go outside their
” specialized food menu ” and there’s no proof of that as of yet …. * sar____

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 1:02pmOrcas are extremely picky eaters and it’s also true that different populations of orcas further specialize in eating certain foods. That dogs are such a rare sight in the ocean is a main reason why the dog was likely quite safe.
