Does the GOP Need to Get With the Times? A Few Top Republicans Think So

(TheBlaze/AP) — To hear some Republicans tell it, the Grand Old Party needs to get with the times.
Some of the early prescriptions offered by officials and operatives to rebuild after devastating elections: retool the party message to appeal to Latinos, women and working-class people; upgrade antiquated get-out-the-vote systems with the latest technology. Teach candidates how to handle the new media landscape.
From longtime GOP luminaries to the party’s rising stars, almost everyone asked about the Republicans’ Nov. 6 election drubbing seems to agree that a wholesale update is necessary for a party that appears to be running years behind Democrats in adapting to rapidly changing campaigns and an evolving electorate.
Interviews with more than a dozen Republicans at all levels of the party indicated that post-election soul-searching must quickly turn into a period of action.
“We’ve got to have a very brutally honest review from stem to stern of what we did and what we didn’t do, and what worked and what failed,” said former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who ran the party in the 1990s.
The party “has to modernize in a whole wide range of ways,” added former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who ran against White House nominee Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential primary. “We were clearly wrong on a whole range of fronts.”

To determine what went wrong, the Republican National Committee is examining every detail of the 2012 elections, with the goal of rebuilding the party for the future – much as the Democratic Party did in the 1980s after suffering a series of stinging losses at all levels of government.
Now, as was the case back then, the stakes are enormous for the party that failed to win the White House and has lost the popular vote. They’re perhaps even higher for Republicans grappling for ways to court a rapidly changing electorate whose voting groups don’t naturally gravitate toward the GOP. The dangers of failing to act could be severe: permanent minority status.
So it’s little surprise that, after the election, some Republicans were quick to sound stark warnings.
The scale of the losses largely shocked a party whose top-shelf operatives went into Election Day confident Republicans had a considerable chance of capturing the White House and gaining ground in Congress, where Republicans controlled the House and had a sizable minority in the Senate.
Instead, Romney lost all but one of the nine contested states, North Carolina, to President Barack Obama and was trounced in the electoral vote. Republicans also lost ground to Democrats in both houses of Congress, though Republicans retained their House majority.

How to move forward dominated the discussions at last week’s Republican Governors Association meeting in Las Vegas, where some of the party’s leading voices castigated Romney’s assessment – made in what was supposed to be a private telephone call to donors – that Obama won re-election because of the “gifts” the president had provided to blacks, Hispanics and young voters.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal attributed Romney’s loss to a lack of “a specific vision that connected with the American people.”
Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, who describes himself as a “pro-choice moderate Republican,” echoed Republicans across the spectrum when he said last week: “We need to be a larger-tent party.” Brown lost his seat to Democrat and self-described Native American Elizabeth Warren.
Across the board, Republicans say that arguably the most urgent task facing the party is changing its attitude about immigration as it looks to woo Hispanics. This rapidly growing group voted overwhelmingly for Obama, by margins of 7-to-1 over Romney, who had shifted to the right on the issue during the GOP primary.
It didn’t take long after the election for even staunch conservatives to start changing their tune on immigration.

Republican Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana (Photo: AP)
Barbour said soon after the election: “If we would be for good economic policy in terms of immigration, that would go a long way toward solving the political problem.”
As many others joined in, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh argued that immigration policy is not necessarily what draws Latinos to the Democrat Party. To appease both sides, however, he said that he’d be willing to consider complete amnesty for all illegal aliens, provided they don’t vote for 25 years. That way, national policy is not being dictated by party politics.
Republicans said they also have work to do with single women and younger voters, many of whom tend to be more liberal on social issues than the majority of the Republican Party. These Republicans said a change in tone is needed, though not a change in principles, such as opposition to abortion.
“We need to make sure that we’re not perceived as intolerant,” said Ron Kaufman, a veteran Republican strategist who advised Romney’s campaign. “The bottom line is we were perceived to be intolerant on some issues. And tone-deaf on others.”
Republicans also said the party has to work on its relationship with working-class voters.

Republican Scott Brown answers a question during a debate against now-Senator Elizabeth Warren (Photo: AP)
“Republicans have to start understanding that small business and entrepreneurs are important, but the people who work for them are also important,” said Rep. Charles Bass, R-N.H., who lost his seat to Democrat Ann Kuster. “We’ve got to be compassionate conservatives.”
Party leaders also said the GOP needs to change how it communicates its message. Obama’s campaign, they said, was particularly effective at talking directly to voters, and building relationships over long periods of time, whereas the GOP was more focused on top-down communication such as TV ads and direct mail.
“There are whole sections of the American public that we didn’t even engage with,” Gingrich said.
Others pointed to the pressing need to recruit candidates who know how to stick to a carefully honed message, especially in a Twitter-driven era. Among their case studies: Senate candidates Richard Mourdock in Indiana and Todd Akin in Missouri, who both discussed rape and pregnancy during the campaign, to the chagrin of party leaders looking to narrow the Democrats’ advantage among women.
“We need candidates who are capable of articulating their policy positions without alienating massive voting blocs,” said Kevin McLaughlin, a Republican operative who worked on several Senate races for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Many Republicans say the party doesn’t have a choice but to change – and quickly.
Said Kaufmann: “In this business, either you learn and grow or you die.”

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 8:00pmIn some situations, “one party” might actually produce a better result. Case in point: Massachusetts. What if the Republicans fold their tent? The only primary would be the Democratic primary. You would very often have 3-way split contests where pro-American candidates would win the nomination. I used to be a Massachusetts Democrat — just so that I could vote in the REAL election (the Democrat primary). I also like being a registered Democrat and vocally supporting Reagan.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 11:39pmIf you think the Conservative Agenda is losing followers … Consider these hard facts
In Ohio and Florida (Where the race is lost or Won) Both have a Republican Gov. / 2/3 of the State House and the U.S. Congress from both States are Republican. Every major State wide office is held by Republicans. And the Republicans enjoyed more landslide victories in both of these States again in 2012.
… But CNN and even Fox news (yes not even Fox does its homework) told me that Ohio and Florida were trending away from Conservative Values and Ideas. ???
.. How could these States that voted over 2/3 Republican last week for Congress and everything else vote for Obama and a Donkey Senator ? The Answer ….. THE DONKEYS CHEATED AGAIN
How ? Did you know the following: Only the inner city had 30 day early voting. Most of the Conservative areas of these States had one day voting, the old fashioned honest way. Only the donkey counties had to stay late in to the night to keep counting till they had enough Obama votes. Only the donkey voting locations had 100% or 106% of their votes for their candidate. And last and maybe most important (its too hard to cheat for a donkey congressman in every county) , But its pretty easy for Obama to campaign with the Dem Senator during most of October, hand out food, gifts, cigs, booze, free rides and even cash. And then tell the crowd to cross the street and early vote. Hey, it will be easy, just vote the top of the ticket.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 12:21amWhat made the Republican Party the Grand Ole Party was the fact that they had about 40% Libertarian ideals. Republican ideals, along with some Libertarian ideals make a winning theme. Fiscally Conservative in both (a little more on the Libertarian side) socially moderate (Individual Liberty, more on the Libertarian side) and less entangling alliances with foreign countries, but free trade with all and protectors of human atrocities (70 to 30% Republican and Libertarian). That is what we need to bring us back from the brink. Can’t all of you see that? Ron Paul was not a staunch Libertarian, but a Republican with Libertarian leanings, more in tune to the GOP of yesteryear when they were considered the Grand Ole Party. Why don’t we get back to being that Party?

The most outrageous thing about the voter fraud, is that there are those in the GOP who must know all about it… and yet are keeping it from the people, pretending that somehow Romney is at fault, or the Republican platform is at fault. Even if going public with suspected fraud doesn’t change the outcome, it will stop the RIDICULOUS conservative self-flagellation which is taking place. Not only did they cheat, but the successful fraud is making the Right question and perhaps destroy its own values.
Conservative media and the GOP have abandoned the values of tens of millions of supporters by ignoring probable instances of fraud. Romney could have won with less than 500,000 votes spread over a few swing states, ALL with probable voter fraud instances, and yet even the Right would have us believe that we have miserably failed. Even TheBLAZE is only reporting on West.
The snooty French have a phrase: (roughly translated) It is not always a good idea to speak the truth.” This “wisdom” allows those who know the truth to judge who should be advised of it and who should not.

No, i don’t think the “Tea Party” needs to form it’s own party. The left wing smear campaign against it was successful… Public perception of the movement, combined with the confused message put forth when it got bloated with “members” who weren’t honestly concerned with LIBERTY made that ship sail long ago.
Ditto “Libertarian Party”… it just sounds boring… like a combination of “Liberal” and “Librarian”…
“Constitutional Party” sounds like three dudes taking a crap at once… “Confederate” is useless,also.. “Anti-Federalist”?…. too negative.
What about simply forming the “Liberty” party?… how can that be twisted as meaning anything other than “Liberty”?

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 8:00pmThat would include the repeal of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution. The stat legislatures would send the two Senators to Washington. No longer voted in (for life it seems) by popular vote.
I would also argue for a larger House of Representatives from properly drawn/configured districts that represent no more than so many thousands of people each. That would make each Representative more closely accountable to their constituents.
Last, I would be in favor of the Unicameral state legislature system such as Nebraska has. There is no need for a state Senate. Your state legislature Representative would be in an even smaller district and would thus represent you and your community more closely and thus reflect your wishes in sending the Senators to D.C.
Just my opnion

That is what we need. A combination of both brings us back to the Grand Ole Party of yesteryear, and will give us the position we need in the federal government. More Liberty, less Intervention, more fiscal responsibility and freedom for all with checks and balances our society has come to expect. Posted on November 17, 2012 at 6:23pmFirst, it doesn’t much matter what the message of the GOP is if the media is actively working to misrepresent it. I suppose we could just go from townhall meeting to townhall meeting and give it directly to the people. Assuming we get 1,000 people to each one, we could reach 100 million voters in as few as 100,000 meetings. That doesn’t seem like a winning strategy.
Second, correct me if I’m wrong, but the GOP is supposed to stand for a handful of specific principles. All this talk about “retooling the message” either demands misrepresenting those principles to dupe people into taking the side of the GOP (i.e. the Democrat strategy), or coming away from those principles in an effort to attract a broader audience. Either way, what was the point in the first place? Either we have certain principles we believe in that we communicate honestly with people and stick to, even in the face of harsh, unfair criticism, or we just say and do whatever gets votes, just like the Democrats do.
I’m tied of all the “big tent” talk. Hispanic voters (or blacks, or women, or gays, or whomever) are all welcome, as far as I’m concerned. But I’m not going to say, “hey, let’s open the borders and give everyone amnesty!” just to attract votes. Half the reason that there’s not more Hispanic support (or support from women, blacks, gays, etc.) is because the media and others just keep parroting the idea that the GOP has no place for those people over and over until it becomes accepted

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 6:45pmYou are correct. We are in an inferior position because we don’t use fear in the same as the Democrats have done. They have adjusted over the years and the GOP has not. Go to Facebook, Twitter, Forums, or speak to people of color. They are positive that Republicans don’t care about them and only want to help the rich. It’s the same technique that has been used for thousands of years, and it is very powerful, and now that the Latino vote is so massive, you can forget about it. It’s over baby. The Republican Party could spend 25 billion dollars trying to reinvent themselves over the next four years and compromise their beliefs in the process and it ain’t gonna matter. Europe is openly electing Socialists for goodness sake. People want to be taken care of and they want moral relativity.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 6:56pmthe problem with the GOP message is that they are progressive-light…
- Liberal people will go with the democrats
-Many independents would rather stay home than vote for a party they dont believe in
- Increasing number of republicans are tired of McCain/Romney country club candidates. They want fresh ideas and real change. They are not showing up to vote like they did in previous elections
Basically the only people who vote republican are those who dont want the democrats to win.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 7:37pmPoint taken soybomb, but the “fresh” ideas I want are mostly a couple hundred years old. Technically, that would be real change, given the current state of affairs. We’ve learned from history and corrected injustices like slavery and so on, but the basic idea of the role of government has not been improved upon since the founding, despite the injection of a lot of fresh ideas over the last two centuries.

I was taught in school that only congress has that right, to coin and print money. I have a pension but what happens if the market tanks? So all the union people better wake up and those who put all their money in the market. Ron Paul had some things right people should be hearing that message right about now.

Posted on November 17, 2012 at 6:15pmit is really sad when you have to compromise reality with fantasy. We should have to buy voters? Dems have proclaimed their fantasy for so long that the less informed (need I say ignorant) believe it. The majority of voters – call them lazy or freeloaders if your want – believe the democrat lie.
The question is whether we should perish to prove the lie for what it is or if we should stand for truth and try to build America back to the great country that is was.

I know … our situation is a sad one. stand with the truth or bend with a lie.
Sounds like the party wants to do a little bending for promotional purposes. Sounds like we are going to lose America and all that she stands for. We need a lot of patriots. I love Glenn Beck, but one voice against a multitude is sad. more people want “free stuff” and that laziness is the ruin of our American Principles.
I am praying that we can come together as a nation…..again… as patriots … to fight for what is right.

no it is not our grandparents republican party, but we are stuck with the way that it has been bastardized. I think that the “tea-party” is our closest answer to getting it back. WE NEED AMERICA BACK. I don’t know how to do it, but I will listen to the right voice. Seems like our only voice now, is Glenn Beck. Our mission now is to get a movement behind us.

I watched him and so many other “conservative” voices go from”we need a true conservative” to “anybody but Obama” in the last election they make me sick. In the end he sold out for Mitt and that says it all. I think some better voices might be Mike Church,Andrew Napolitano, and Ron Paul. The thieves are in charge and America is at the mall, dancing with stars, got talent and voice. Actually, our best talent is wasted and voicing our opinion in blogs to the like-minded is an exercise in futility. All it does is make us feel better without really accomplishing anything.
This is not meant as an answer, strictly observation. We need to demand better from the people elected to SERVE us. Instead all they do is sever us.

Posted on November 19, 2012 at 9:51amIf by libertarianism you mean “true individual liberty with minimal government meddling”, Reagan hit the nail on the head. There’s nothing wrong with religion, with having faith in God, living your life by healthy traditional values or encouraging your neighbor to do the same. But if you’re clamoring for the government to pass laws effectively imposing your religion’s guidelines on the entire populace, you’re really not practicing what you preach. You can be socially conservative without being a nanny-statist. You can promote traditional values while letting gays marry (or civil-unionize) or letting people ingest cannabis. If the GOP can show the world that they can have an open-minded “marketplace of ideas”, they could gain a lot of new blood.
