Anti-Acorn Mom’s Oak Tree Claims Debunked By Nut-Allergic SUN News Reporter?
On Thursday, TheBlaze told you about a mother in Vaughan, Canada, bent on ensuring that oak trees near her kid’s school be cut down. The odd action is being requested due to the woman’s fears that fallen acorns pose a risk to children with severe nut allergies. But, in a unique news experiment conducted just a few days ago, the concerned mother’s fears may have been invalidated.
Donna Giustizia, the woman who has spawned debate, attracted widespread media attention this month, as some have questioned just how dangerous acorns — which are rarely consumed in North America — are to those who have life-threatening reactions to nuts. Despite the uncertainty and reportedly low risk, she has maintained her fears over the damage that these trees could create.
While numerous experts have weighed in of late to say that the tree nuts, themselves, likely aren’t a danger if they are merely touched, SUN News staffers decided to test the theory out for themselves. So, they sent the network’s social media reporter, Gina Phillips (who has severe nut allergies) down to a local park to pick up the acorns and test out Giustizia’s theory.
Did she react to the acorns during the experiment? Did the tree nuts prove to be the dastardly danger that Giustizia has claimed? While the reporter didn’t test the mother’s other argument — that acorns “can also be used to bully and torment children,” the allergy findings are worth checking out.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 11:50amI appalled at the male reporters statements about mouth to mouth. That was sexual harassment and that female news reporter should tell him off camera to stop. If you suggest that again, I will file a claim. Give him a warning. Men are such cads sometimes.
As far as the nut freak, I understand her concern, but she is going over the deep end. Unless she kills and eats a squirrel for dinner, the odds of her child having a reaction is remote. She needs to test the theory too. Take your child with epi-pen in hand and have your child pick up an acorn. Have the ambulance stand by if necessary.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 7:52pmI know not if this makes a difference but this is in Canada not the U.S.A.
I think they should pass some new laws. Ban the growing of peanuts or any nut and the importation in the U.S. Out law all guns, including the police. Only one in five police can have a taser on them and only one in twenty cops may have a fire arm. Offer $1000.00 bucks to every thug to turn in their gun, Make it it illegal for lawyers to run for political office, the maximum amount of wealth in cash and assets is three million dollars per person, all cars must stop using gasoline and use only electric, in national parks people are not allowed, no hunting of any kind, sport fishing will be a felony, T.V screens can only be 19″, talk radio taken off the air, pizza parlors can only sell man made ingredients, cows to naturally die off and to go extinct, only one shower or bath per week, no pets of any kind, only gay marriages, conservatives not allowed to reproduce, elderly when sick are left to live or die on their own, any and all narcotics are legal, free medical to everyone under forty and only those who wish to work may do so, taxes are eighty percent and the twenty percent deposited into an account that you must make last two months.
I think if we would just follow these outlines everyone would be much happier. Don’t ya think?

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 11:35amI have special needs kids too and I would never ask the world to adjust to their needs, I strive to get them to deal with the world. If they had an allergy I would teach them to stay away from the problems. Life is dangerous for all of us. I know a teen with CF and they kept going on about dieing even though they are very healthy and I told them there are more dangerous things than CF so they might as well just enjoy what they have which is life. Their sibling died of drug abuse…not the CF they both had.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 11:13amThat is an extreme, idiotic statement.
Firstly, the social media person that was used as guinea pig, has a peanut allergy. More people die from this disease than those who die from AIDS. A person with a tree nut allergy, could have a reaction from these acorns. Further, it isn’t some adult that will allow exposure, but a child. Some 150 children every year, under the age of 9 die. An Epi-pen gives the person 15 minutes to get to a hospital and there is no guarantee they will survive.
Ignorance of this disease is astoundingly amazing. Am I agreeing that these trees be cut down? No. But people like you need to educate yourself as 50% of all children in the US are born with this and it links it way back to GMO foods.
Maybe a read through this will expose you to the tragedy of children dying from this disease.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 11:38amUnfortunately the numbers you present do not seem to work. HIV claimed (2009) ~ 17,000 people in the United States. According to a wiki article ~10 people die each year BUT according the the Peanut Board (Biased?) ~150 people die each year. I doubt the Wiki article (After all it is a Wiki article) but even if the Peanut Board number is 100 times less than actual deaths the number would be 15,000 which is less than die each year from HIV. I would argue you might have mistakenly looked at the number of estimated new cases of peanut allergy reported each year which was about 35,000 (Thought I seriously doubt that number). The other points presented by the original author I don’t argue against except to state that hundreds of children should not suffer for the concerns (real or imagined) of children who have allergies.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 1:02pmPeanuts don’t grow on trees. There is no comparison. That would be like being allergic to strawberries and rubbing a tomato on your skin. Same goes for the woman who wants the trees cut down. What is the real danger from the trees? I doubt if the school bans all nuts (pun sort of intended). it seems that inadvertent exposure to tree nuts inside the school is more risk. How many kids have died there? Someone has too much time on her hands.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 2:35pmBack up “ubkidding”, the statement was obviously said in jest, so un-curl your panties! And DON’T go trying to force your kid on us like this is a “disease”. It is NOT a “disease”, it is officially classified as an “ALERGY”. The reason you and other young entitlement parents blare out “disease, disease” is because then you can rake in free Obama money because your kid can’t eat a peanut. YOU WANT TO KNOW A DISEASE? I got full blown Ulcerative Colitis when I was 17! It destroyed my so called best years and took college totally off the table. No one in my family screamed “Government money” when I got sick (just bought a WHOLE lot of toilet paper…). But I guess NOW I should file and demand my house be paid by Obama because I’ve got that rare known “disease” called “HAY FEVER”. Oh, you should see when I get a sneezing attack. It’s so horrible and I know it’s the neighbors fault with cutting their grass knowing dang well I’ve got this terrible “disease”. WHERE’S MY OBAMA MONEY (achoo)!!
Get off your high horse and take responsibility for your kid. And a quote from Eddie Murphy, “Have a Coke and a smile…and shut the f–k up!”.
(Got some letters left, so you wanna hear my “Gabby” imitation? “Oobla – oobla – oobla – oobla…”. How’s that?

Instead of isolating the nut, many would agree to cut down your trees.
Of course the worried, don’t have any trees to harm them or to cut down, but you should cut down yours so they can feel better.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 9:43amThis is incredibly misleading. A “peanut” allergy is not the same as a “tree nut” allergy. If the girl in this video is truly allergic to peanuts, then she should NOT have had a reaction to the acorn, as acorns are “tree nuts.” Peanuts are actually legumes and not a “tree nut.”

“…Harper then put the German officers in a jeep and took them back to where the German enlisted men were detained. He then said to the German captain, ‘If you don’t know what [Nuts] means, in plain English it is the same as ‘Go to Hell’. And I’ll tell you something else, if you continue to attack we will kill every G**dam German that tries to break into this city.’
The German major and captain saluted very stiffly. The captain said, ‘We will kill many Americans. This is war.’ Harper then responded, ‘On your way Bud,’ he then said, ‘and good luck to you.’ Harper later told me he always regretted wishing them good luck.”
