Congress to Investigate Inaccurate Benghazi Talking Points: ‘This Whole Process Is Going to Be Checked Out’
(TheBlaze/AP) — Lawmakers said Sunday they want to know who had a hand in creating the Obama administration’s now-discredited “talking points” about the Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and why a final draft omitted the CIA’s early conclusion that terrorists were involved.
The answers could explain why President Barack Obama and his top aides, including U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, described the attack for roughly two weeks afterward as a protest against an anti-Islam video that spontaneously turned violent, and why they played down any potential link to al-Qaeda despite ample evidence to the contrary.

Administration officials have either defended their portrayal as relying on the best information available at the time, or claimed that they said it was a terrorist attack all along.
Democrats say CIA and other intelligence officials signed off on the final talking points, but Republicans have alleged a Watergate-like cover up, accusing White House aides of hiding the terrorism link in the run-up to the Nov. 6 presidential election. President Obama made foreign policy a cornerstone of his campaign, they note, and repeatedly claimed to have dealt a crippling blow al-Qaeda.
“I know the narrative was wrong and the intelligence was right. … We’re going to get to the bottom of how that happened,” said Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee, firmly said that she doesn’t believe the White House altered the talking points for political reasons. But, she added, she has lingering concerns about how they were created when it was so clear that the military-style assault wasn’t a simple protest gone awry.
She said Congress has asked the administration to provide a detailed explanation.
“We gave the direction yesterday that this whole process is going to be checked out,” said Feinstein, D-Calif. “We’re going to find out who made changes in the original statement. Until, we do I really think it’s unwarranted to make accusations.”
Here is full video of Feinstein’s comments on NBC’s “Meet the Press”:
The inquiry comes on the heels of closed testimony to the committees last week by former CIA Director David Petraeus. According to lawmakers who attended the meetings, Petraeus said the reference to al-Qaeda was removed from the final version of talking points, although he wasn’t sure who or which federal agency deleted it.
A senior U.S. official familiar with the document, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the process publicly, said the al-Qaeda reference was deleted because the information came from classified sources and the links were tenuous. The administration also did not want to prejudice a criminal investigation in its early stages, that official said.
Feinstein confirmed that intelligence officials told her in closed briefings that they were reluctant to name any particular terrorist group without being certain. But, she added, it was clear almost immediately after the attack that the violence didn’t stem from a political demonstration based on a YouTube video.

Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national security adviser, told reporters traveling with the president to Asia that any substantive edits to the talking points would have come from intelligence agencies themselves. The only change the White House made, he claimed, was to correct a reference to the facility in Benghazi as a “diplomatic facility,” instead of a “consulate.”
“Other than that we were guided by the points that were provided by the intelligence community. So I can’t speak to any other edits that may have been made,” he said.
But lawmakers said that Capitol Hill briefings last week represented the FBI, State Department and CIA, and that officials did not address what role political appointees like as Rice might have played in the creation of the talking points. Republicans said they want Rice to testify about what she knew and when she knew it.
“What I do know is that every member in the intelligence community says that references to al-Qaida were removed by somebody, [but] they don’t know who,” Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga. summarized.
Here is video of his Fox News interview (skip to around 2:30):
But Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Petraeus had signed off on the final talking points and that going after Rice is a pointless witch hunt.
Sen. Olympia Snowe, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that she expects the committee will hold at least three more hearings on the matter and publish a report on its findings.
“It took 17 days for the director of national intelligence even to issue a statement to say that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack,” Snowe, R-Maine, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
“That’s unacceptable in today’s environment.”
Here is video from the ABC segment with Sen. Levin and Rep. King (skip to around 4:00):

Ben Ghazi is a disgrace. I have seen this happen and listen to my peers actually believe the lib lies. They honestly think that all conservatives are racist and “old fashioned” and the old people are ignorant and treat their opinions as stupid. What happened to the respect and wisdom of older people. Some of my peers may agree with you, but if you mention “fox” or “religion” in any arguement they will instantly discredit anything you had just said…Some of them are brainwashed to think that socialism and communism is the answer, and many see it as being an ok government. The reason they are this way is because they were not taught to keep their values no matter what anyone thinks, and as they grew older were taught to hate conservatistic principles by professors and such.
My point. Parents you are responsible for what comes after Obama, you are responsible for raising your kids with the true knowledge about our country and to teach them what america really is about. Please for my future and my future kids future, for AMERICAS future, teach your kids the constitution. Teach them how America is supposed to be run. Show them news stories and teach them about what is happening to this country. Show them the liberal lies. Posted on November 18, 2012 at 7:11pmI was hoping that Petraeus would shed some light on that subject. However, since it was closed door, we only know what has been leaked or given by those willing to talk. I suspect they did have prisoners at the compound and that maybe their first “stand-down” was directed to protect the prisoners they had. We had time to divert an unarmed drone to the area. As that drone was running out of fuel we had time to launch a new unarmed drone and fly it to the area of operation. But they want us to believe that we didn’t have time to fly in a couple of F-16s or FA-18s or to position the AC-130 Spectre Gunship (even if not firing, it would have been a show of force and they would be ready to engage targets when the SEALs were asking). The POTUS said he directed his National Security Council to do whatever to protect of men. I DON’T THINK SO !

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 11:16pmWho gives a hoot, who knew what when. The important facts that need to be ascertained are: 1. Why did the Ambassador’s security get reduced despite pleas for more security leading up to 9/11. 2. Why was help not given to them when 2 hours before the attack there was a plea for immediate help. 3. Why were the attackers excited when they found out the Ambassador was still alive, and then take him to the hospital. 4. Why was immediate aid to help, told to stand down 5. Why help was not sent when Marines could have been there in one to 2 hours. It appears this was set up to be an abduction, not a murder. The attackers did not use their RPG’s on the building with the Anbassador. Instead, they set a fire to smoke him out. The morons just “oversmoked” him, and ended up killing him. Also, why did we seem to be setting everything up to make it possible for him to be abducted?.

Te emails have been releasd that show the security was being taken away for weeks to months prior to 9/11 despite requests from the Ambassador to increase security due to finding of idenified 10 Al-queda group in the area, and attacks on the British Consulate, and the Red Cross, both of which pulled out of the area prior to 9/11. The emails have been released that show the Ambassador was asking for immediate help. There is no question that Marines were accessible both one hour away, and 2 hours away There is no question that we sent a drone to watch the event, and watched for the whole 7 hour standoff without providing aid. There is no question that the Navy Seals lasted hours into the battle without receiving backup. There is apparently proof, but still being hidden, that the White House ordered the Seals, and the CIA to stand down. The only question is to conjecture, why the Seals and the CIA were there as they were not connected to what the Ambassaor was doing. This has nthingto do with Glenn Beck. This information is available, and if you did not spend your time, outside of the time you spend with your dribble on this website, somewhere else other than Left wing websites which you obviously count on for your naive information.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 8:56pmYes, & it’s even worse than that. The following is what REALLY happened. Readers Digest(short) version. obama made a deal through Turkey w\ terrorists to kidnap our “ambassador so he could rescue him for an october suprise. That’s why he reduced security all summer in Libya, & also why he ordered everyone to stand down. It was all a setup. BUT, the terrorists double crossed obama & killed Stevens & the others in order to blackmail obama later, & for revenge for obama “droneing” al qaida leaders. Wait, it gets even worse. In order to secure a deal, obama set up the helo full of SEAL team 6 to be shot down (w\weapons given to them by obama no less) as recompense for offing bin laden. That’s right, he murdered all those SEALS too! That episode was ANOTHER example of obama denying aid to our people, as a Spectre gunship was denied permission to supress the ground fire that was targeting the helo. This fits into the grand plan to destroy our military, as spec ops operators are a national strategic asset. Realize, a LOT of special operators have been killed the last 4 years, this is no accident.
What I want to know is, at what point does the military ( and everyone else) deem that the obama regime is a domestic enemy? What more does obama have to destroy, before we remove him by force? When do we say, enough is enough? Americans used to know treason when they saw it, and what to do about it.

Posted on November 19, 2012 at 2:25amMaxpower,
The problem with how you’re seeing things here is that you think the military is going to go against the President. They won’t. Although they do take an oath to defend the Constitution, in that same oath they swear to obey the orders of the President. The upper echelons of all branches of the military are securely in the President’s pocket and they don’t train the military to study the Constitution or analyze political motivations, they train the military to follow orders. They then further secure their absolute control over every military member by making every military member totally indebted to the military and stripping military members of their freedoms. Make no mistake, the military structure is socialism in action and as subjects in a socialist system, military members have little choice but to do what they are told. I’m sorry but the military won’t be your savior today. Before you get the wrong idea about me here, I’m not putting down any of the everyday soldiers, airmen, sailors, or marines that make up the vast bulk of the military because by vast margins they are good people. It is the military structure and the power as it is held at the top that is the problem. Maybe you’re wondering why you should take anything I say seriously. Because I spent 8 years in the USAF and I saw first hand how it works. I saw that the President is a domestic enemy to the Constitution and the only way I could deal with it was to get out.

Posted on November 19, 2012 at 2:44amOh, and you can thank Teddy Roosevelt for the President having total control over the totality of military force in America. The National Guard Act of 1903 was the foundational bill for every other progressive bill that has come after it and the bill that ultimately handed the greatest amount of power into the President’s hands. Our President was only ever meant to be the Commander in Chief over the small regular Army and the bulk of military force was meant to come from militias who did NOT answer to the President at all. Nowadays the National Guard has taken the place of our militias and they are at the President’s command whenever he wishes.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 6:13pmI believe the POTUS has already provided the American public the answers to the real questions. He clearly stated in his press conference: Ambassador Rice had nothing to do with Benghazi. At the request of the White House she made a “presentation” based on “her understanding” of the information provided to her. Others keep wondering why either D-CIA, Sec State, Sec Def, Clapper, or Donnelly did not make the Sunday shows. It comes down to simply knowing the truth vs. plausible deniability. They could be convicted of lying, while the Ambassador was “just making a presentation based on her understanding of what she was told.”

This issue has taken combat Troops’ morale down several notches. This is going to make soldiers and CIA operatives think twice before they ever go on a mission. Posted on November 18, 2012 at 6:50pmChet, I have been in the infantry for 20 years. I accept your point. Mission first. However, comic book courage is sometimes what is required to complete the mission. There are many young men that have become soldiers out of comic book heroes and little green army men. Put the situation at Benghazi that night into the context of what we know so far… There was means and availability to attempt action toward a rescue operation. Therefore, it gave those men hope and courage to continue with a very real expectation of assistance. When the rescue effort appears to be totally ignored, what are our comrades left to believe and what of the ones still in harms way? Anyone in the same situation should have the expectation that they will receive assistance from their country, not be ignored and left for dead.
The spirit of the motto, βAmericans Do Not Leave Americans Behind” is what is so important. That is why we have motto’s.

And if by some chance Obama is impeached, he will never willingly leave office; his insanity of a god-king complex is too well imbedded.

Posted on November 18, 2012 at 4:43pmWe knew the terrorist group involved the night of the attack, they were taking credit for it that night on twitter, and Libyan officials verified this, which the Obama administration ignored and carried on with their narrative of the events that transpired. The WH changed the report, then sent Rice out to sell it,to try her out for the Sec. of State job. peddling lies to cover for the administration being the criteria for her to get the job. The WH were the ones to remove any reference to AL Qaeda in the report,as they were the ones to have the most to lose, with the truth being known. All to protect Obama.
