MSNBC Anchor Tells Israeli Ambassador Hamas Rockets ‘Rarely Do Damage’
Beyond its military operation targeting the Hamas terrorist infrastructure in Gaza, Israel is invested in an intense media campaign to make sure its side of the story is being heard overseas. But that’s not always easy to do.
In an interview with Israel’s top envoy to the United States on Saturday, MSNBC provided yet another example of how much work Israeli officials face in their effort to pass through the filter of the mainstream media and present their side of the story.
MSNBC’s Mara Schiavocampo began her interview of Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren straightforwardly enough, asking “What would be the trigger for a ground operation? What’s the red line here?”
Oren answered, “You have the equivalent of what would be about 170 million Americans under bomb shelters. If Hamas continues to escalate we will take the necessary and legitimate measures to defend our citizens.”
Schiavocampo’s second question might be considered more controversial, positing the argument that long-range rockets carrying warheads weighing between 20 and 90 kilograms — 46 to 198 pounds — aren’t actually dangerous to human life. She asked:
“Living under the threat of rocket attack is certainly a psychological trauma. But what would you say to those who argue that the rockets are essentially very ineffective, they rarely do damage and that the response from Israelis is disproportional to the threat they’re under.”
Oren answered she might want to pose that question to the three Israelis killed by a rocket in Kiryat Malachi on Thursday (see TheBlaze’s story here and Glenn Beck’s segment looking at media bias and profiling the victims here). Oren suggested Schiavocampo envisage what would happen if Hamas were bombing America. He said:
“Imagine if one rocket had fallen in the United States and not now since the year 2009, our last operation, we’ve had something in the vicinity of 8,000 rockets fall on the State of Israel. That’s more than twice all of the German rockets that fell on London during World War II. And you saw how the British and Americans reacted to that.”
Schiavocampo then posited that because the number of rocket attacks on Israel has dramatically increased since 2009, Israel’s policy has been a “failure.” By way of comparison, she did not attribute the increase in attacks to other possibilities including: Hamas feeling more emboldened since its ideological ally, the Muslim Brotherhood, took control of next-door Egypt or that its ties have only grown stronger with Iran, which provides its long-range Fajr-5 missiles. She asked Oren:
“You mentioned the amount of rocket attacks that have been seen in Israel. In 2009 that number was about 200 and this year it’s been about 700 despite the fact that we’ve been down this road again that Israel has responded with military force in the past. So does this show that Israel ‘s policy towards Gaza has been a failure?”
Oren said that after 12,000 rocket attacks in the past 12 years on Israeli civilians, “We have no option and nor would any other country in the world have an option but to defend our citizens by all necessary and legitimate means.”
To conclude, Schiavocampo asked:
“The people of Gaza say they’ve been under constant siege from Israeli forces from the air and from the sea. And Gaza, as you know, is one of the most densely populated places in the world. So how does Israel justify its use of military force in such a crowded urban environment?”
Oren replied:
“Actually, Gaza is not one of the most densely populated areas of the world. It’s a conventional myth. Tel Aviv is four times more densely populated than Gaza is. But having said that we are operating in a densely populated area, That is true. And we have conducted more than 1,000 air strikes against rocket bases, rocket launching pits, arsenals, command headquarters and we have taken extraordinary, I would even say super-human measures to avoid inflicting civilian casualties there. We’ve made tens of thousands of phone calls, dropped leaflets, we’ve sent text messages to people, civilians in these areas, warning them to clear out. And as a result, we’ve been able to reduce civilian casualties to a minimum. It’s always regretful when civilians are hurt. But up to this point, three-quarters of all the people who have been hurt in Gaza have been armed terrorists.”
Conservative media watchdog the Media Research Center highlighted Schiavocampo’s coverage of the Occupy Wall Street protests in October, pointing out that she concluded one segment by “passing along a request from the leftist activists” who wanted to recruit more numbers for their demonstration. She said then: “Organizers are also hoping students will join them in today’s events. They’re asking college students across the country to walk out of class at 2:00 this afternoon, in a show of solidarity.”
At the end of the Oren segment, perhaps as a way to demonstrate “balance,” Schiavocampo promoted another interview planned for Sunday with former PLO spokeswoman and anti-Israel activist Diana Buttu. Buttu recently spoke at a conference promoting the “One-State Solution,” that is, one state covering the territory of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Because of the higher Muslim childbirth rate, that “solution” would ultimately destroy Israel as a Jewish state.

Israel has launched hundreds of precision, targeted attacks into Gaza with high yield weapons and have caused only a couple dozens deaths. Meanwhile, Hamas fires hundreds of rockets the vast majority of which either miss or are shot down by Iron Dome. Simply put, Israel’s near 100% accuracy produced less than 50, many of them Hamas, deaths for several hundred strikes while Hamas has managed to kill three Israelis and some of its own people with rockets that couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. Of the 500 rockets that Iron Dome didn’t stop (and remember, Iron Dome carefully picks rockets aimed at residential areas) I’d say less than 50 actually hit anywhere near their targets. Let’s try and imagine what Hamas would do if they could actually pick their targets.

The likelyhood of a missle, shot into Isreal, killing someone is a lot less than when she bends over and someone mistakes her huge a$$ as a parking structure and then parks in it. Pitty the poor jerk that makes that mistake. She should prove her point, though, by doing a demonstration. Have someone fire a missle at her house say from across the street and see what happens. Since she’ll know it’s coming she probably won’t get hurt. She and her neighbors can report on the effects: “Hey I’m Susie Numnuts reporting! Guess what, the missles blew up my house!” while a smoldering spent missle half hangs out of her huge rear end.

Thousands of times more Iraqi’s were killed by suicide bombers, car bombers, and Sunni/Shiite terrorism (Including their pilgrimages to holy shrines) than by any American official actions, (or accidental) so about that evolving, do you suppose your evolution will soon bring you to the point you can find and read (and understand) news stories from our war in Iraq?

Hamas hides itself among it’s own popualtion deliberately in order to protect itself and to gain propaganda devices that it knows the western media will publish in a positive light for them agaisnt Israel.
Hezbollah is the real military muscle that’s prepared to go against Israel. It is trained and equipped by Iran and can carry out military operations against Israel as a light infantry group. Its’ the first wave agaisnt Israel where in better times..Syria and Iran would be the powers aligned against Israel. But today..Syria is crippled and Iran can’t use Syria as a corridor to get weapons and money to Hamas and Hezbollah.
So pre emptively, Israel takes out Hamas and Hezbollah in preparation for operations against Iran.

Just because one side is incompetent or inept does not mean the other side has to fight with one arm ties behind its back.
The rockets fired into Isreal were intended to do damage, that is justification for retaliation.
To say, “But they started it!” Is absurd. Some on here expect Isreal to be tolerant, yet imply that the Palestinians need not be tolerant.
Both sides are wrong, but the war has started. The best way to end it quickly with the least amount of casualties is to use maximum force. It is sad, but that is the way war works.

You know you can call things what they are without passing judgement, right? It’s a complicated situation I wouldn’t know how to cope with aside from collective punitive measures either. I’ve said Israel has racist immigration policies and military standards without passing judgement because I know that they don’t necessarily represent the consensus of the governed. Ron Paul isn’t a racist or collectivist in any way, unlike you, and anyone with a lick of sense knows it. You assume that he has the same retarded collective thought process as you do. Always trying to ump people into group instead of looking at each individual. From everything I’ve heard and from the best of my ability to piece information together, I’d call it an apartheid state as well, but PROBABLY justified because no one can distinguish the decent Palestinians just wanting to live in peace from the extremist savages that strap bombs to themselves and blow up civilians.

The chances of her getting gang raped are not good even if she beckons them on. As stupid as those rag head are, they’re smart enough to know they could fall in and be lost forever. The only way they know they’ll again see daylight is if she has a huge smoldering eruption like in the movie ‘Journey To The Center Of The Earth.’ They would have to be ejected by an explosion brought on say by her eating some bad deviled eggs probably consumed at a network party. No one is likely to survive that.

The fact that Hamas’ people can’t aim for crap and just shoot wildly does not in any way take away from the danger a rocket poses. Not to mention that if Israel had less of a defense system than it has or had no bomb shelters ready for people then the number of deaths relative to attacks would certainly be higher. As it is, the situation is unacceptable. A friend of mine here in the US who is from Israel said to me the other day, “You know, here in America it is so easy for people to talk and take sides whether it be right or left but when you are in Israel and there is a rocket coming towards you and you don’t know where it will hit, there is no more left or right and everyone finds themselves on the same side.” When was the last time you had to worry about a rocket or bomb of some type hitting your house? In my opinion, if Hamas wants to pick fights it knows it has no chance of winning and then wear no uniform to distinguish its people from civilians then it deserves what it gets. The military uniform is one of the greatest and most humanitarian military technologies in history; it is what keeps civilians safe and enemy forces accountable.
