Mitt Romney’s post-election explanation for his defeat – that the Democrats offered “gifts” for specific interest groups at a far greater pace than Republicans – has enabled most of the former Massachusetts governor’s erstwhile rivals to gleefully write obituaries for him as a political figure. And perhaps the most eager such figure is none other than the man who cost Romney the South Carolina primary and briefly rivaled him in Florida for the nomination – former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
Today on an ABC roundtable, Gingrich lit into Romney for his comments accusing the Democrats of “gift” giving, calling them “nuts” and “insulting and profoundly wrong.”
“This would be like Wal-Mart having a bad week and going, ‘The customers have really been unruly.’ I mean, the job of a political leader in part is to understand the people. If we can’t offer a better future that is believable to more people, we’re not going to win,” Gingrich said. “And if it had been that simple, my question would have been, ‘Why didn’t you outbid him?’”
In addition, Gingrich faulted Romney for holding a vision that “reduces us to economic entities who have no passion, no idealism, no dreams, no philosophy” and jokingly suggested having an “elephant with gifts on it” go into unfriendly communities.
Gingrich also blasted Romney for failing to pick up increasing amounts of the Asian American vote, who Gingrich characterized jokingly as “not into gifts.”

Nov. 18, 2012 at 8:43pmIndeed. I argue that the establishment republicans fail to understand the logic in moving towards Libertarianism. It is still possible, *and* desirable to be completely socially liberal while becoming very hawkish from a fiscal standpoint. The two actually go hand-in-hand if you truly believe in personal responsibility.

Nov. 18, 2012 at 9:37pm‘social liberalism/conservatism’ never existed until after WWII. Even though the Soviet Union didn’t have to deal with this garbage that America imported from Germany – Cultural Marxism from the Frankfurt School (fled Germany in 1933 for some reason).
That being said, it is not possible for fiscal conservatism to exist with “social liberalism” because it is designed to destroy a country. It is literally political napalm. “political correctness” can’t ever be “controlled” because it is designed to undermine freedom of speech and political power from the “haves” to the “have-nots.”
You’re seeing Russia being imploded by it right now by gay mafias and feminist rockers that burn down crosses.
It truly was what killed this country.

Nov. 18, 2012 at 10:20pmLongknifed- I appreciate your premise and understand your stance. However, I’d present that lassez-faire philosophy (social and economic) existed long before WWII. In addition, a careful study of history, over the past several thousand years, has revealed consistently that forcible social behavior usually ends with incredibly inhumane results (see- The Middle Ages for the easiest example.) Behavioral acceptance of all humans is mandatory for freedom of conscience to truly exist. Obviously; this excludes murder, physical harm, and theft from societal normalcy for self-evident reasons. Moral regulation (drugs, sexual preference, etc) is best left to communities and local governments, as they know their ‘flock’ better than anyone else. Please understand that my concession of an individual to live by their own conscience does not always equate to an endorsement. Tolerance and approval are quite different concepts. I simply believe that regulating (on a federal level) personal behavior of any sort is completely contrary to the principles of liberty. The long-term effects of statism can be as destructive as communism, and are virtually identical in implementation. From where I stand, the establishment republican party is nearly as guilty as contemporary progressives in desiring to dictate their own narrow social code.

Nov. 18, 2012 at 8:28pmI find it disappointing that politicians such as Newt Gingrich are still able to garner enough support to stir their ‘base’ into more in-fighting. Mr. Romney may have some valid points, but would have likely been better suited to take the high road. Furthermore, by taking shots at what is now a beaten horse; Mr. Gingrich does more harm than good to the cause of Constitutionally-minded people.

Romney was correct in saying the democrats bought the election with freebies. How many of those old black fat folk did you see on tv wantin that “obammy money”, “obammy phones” or “dang man, he’s black. I’ll vote for him” like Samuel Jackson. It will take someone who is liked by all cultures for his honesty, humility, and common sense to beat back the unions, the illegals, and the blacks. Whether he’s black, white, green or blue I’ll vote for him if he’s not a politician to begin with. Kinda like Herman Cain. I would have voted for him. You all can play the far left, far right, or anywhere in between. Politics will never allow the small person (middle class) to succeed. It will take a revolution.

There is a ring of truth to this story and the 47% comment but Romney isnt telling the whole picture and not correctly framing the issue. Romney is an elitist, which is why these things keep coming up at his big donor fundraisers.
Romney went around promising the military complex more jobs and more projects. He went around telling eveyone he would create 12 million jobs. He went around telling everyone he would reduce the price of gas……Those are all gifts as well – not the same kind of gifts, but still political gifts. The only thing Romney should have been saying was that he would get the government out of your life and restore your freedom – talk of anything else is just progressive

Any candidate the GOP put up would have gotten the ABO vote. We need to quit moving towards the Democrats, liberals, and progressives. We need to be bold (no more pastels) and go to the Constitution. I would rather die with principles and die like most of you did picking the lesser of two evils. We all know socialism doesnt work, its just going to take economic collapse before most of you see it.
