The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is often called the busiest travel day of the year. As if going through security at the airport weren’t time consuming enough, add in thousands of people who don’t travel on a regular basis (probably don’t know about the liquid restrictions or that you have to place your laptop in a different bin) and it’s bound to create further backups.
To help keep things moving, here are some tips from the TSA to help us all get through the airport checkpoints as quickly as possible, whether we’re a regular traveler or haven’t flown since last year:
- Can I bring my …: When in doubt, consider downloading TSA’s app and then consulting its “Can I bring my…” tool before trying to carry on a half a dozen of your recently canned apple butter jars.
- Wrapped presents: Some families will be celebrating a gift-giving holiday earlier over Thanksgiving if they won’t be able to make it back in December — or perhaps just transporting gifts to save on shipping later. Either way, TSA says that wrapped gifts are allowed, but they’re not recommended. If an agent or the scanner flags a gift to be examined, the bow you spent 20 minutes folding might need to be snipped.
- Liquids rule of thumb: You can bring as many 3.4-ounce containers as you can fit into one one-quart plastic, sealable bag.

Gizmodo’s Andrew Tarantola has some travel tips as well. Here are a few from his recent post:
- What to wear: Instead of wearing your brand new knee-high riding boots that you have to wiggle off and then stuff your jeans back into, consider an easy slip on that you can wear socks with. Loose clothing that make it easy to remove your wallet, keys and other pocketed items quickly is a plus as well.
- When to undress: It’s best not to leave your de-belting and shoe, coat, watch and jewelry removal process to the last minute. Tarantola recommends beginning to undress yourself — to the extent appropriate for TSA — when there are five to eight people ahead of you.
- Best advice to date: Before everyone starts going all Walmart at 3:30 a.m. on Black Friday (circa last year since this year they’re opening at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day), here’s some of advice from Tarantola: “So, in general, keep your mouth shut and don’t be a pest. And try not to harass the other slowpoke passengers who obviously didn’t read this article. Behave like an adult and we might all just get through this checkpoint by December.”
Oh and good news, the comfy gel inserts in your shoes are now allowed (bet you didn’t even know they were restricted before).
Get more travel tips from TSA and brush up on some of its security news in its 2012 holiday travel blog post here.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 11:13amThat might work, but we’d need to have a point of vocal discontent sent directly to “homeland security” (oh, how I hate that term and department), letting them know that we’re not flying and why we’re not flying. If not, they’ll just assume that people don’t want to travel because of, I don’t know (rolls dice) – migratory geese getting caught in the engines.

Probably true. So the solution is…?
I’m thinking “starve the beast” is the only viable peaceful solution, but I don’t think most folks have the guts to stand up and, well, go under the radar any longer (with economic activities I mean). Everybody’s too comfortable to do anything, even the majority who post here and on other libertarian/conservative websites. Everybody’s all about liberty, until it comes to sacrificing Monday Night Football. Then it’s all “Whoa dude, don’t get carried away”.
Sorry, rambling today.

Completely agree. I believe there is no peaceful remedy. I just abandon that concept. There is status quo and there is collapse. My hope is that collapse comes soon enough that people still have a shred of concept of liberty. If it takes 10 years, the sheep will have gone past the point of no return and lack any ability to resist tyranny. They are being conditioned into Eloi, in my opinion.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 10:46amA good decade after the 9-11 attack, we are still doing everything possible to inconvenience the citizen that wants to fly. We now have another gigantic bureaucracy, growing every day, with unions keeping the personal costs budget busting.
And what has this bureaucracy accomplished?
Mostly spending large sums of money we had to borrow, to grow our Federal govt and to reduce the freedoms and liberties of it’s citizens.
I may have missed the terrorist that they managed to uncover, attempting to board a plane to destroy it, but all I have heard is the couple that were already on the plane that the travelers stopped. Did I miss the capture of a terrorist?
Or could this just be labeled another great “fix” from our Congress. An enormous waste of tax payer money that does not yet exist, but a great growth of another public sector union.
And the fix now is higher taxes on the 2% of tax payers that are still making enough money to tax.

Owebama and the dems vote for it as well. On this issue there is no differentiation between the two parties…but make no mistake this was a GOP brainchild.
For all of you spouting the discontent…who did you vote for? Did your congressman vote for this crap? Did your senator? Which POTUS candidate did you vote for? When you vote for people who support this you ENDORSE IT.
The big phrase around here is that elections have consequences. They sure do. I’d wager for 95% of you all that you are dealing with the consequences of what you did in the voting booth. Like what you all said to NY/NJ, you too can just smile and wimper when the blue gloves of safety grope you, your wife, your children. You wanted this now you deal with it.

I have researched it. It actually started in 1995 with Joe Biden of all people. But the modern version of the bill was certainly a bi-partisan effort (to my point) with the usual RINO’s and neo-cons marching in lockstep with the collectivist liberals.
Not sure what I “need to learn”. If you are suggesting that I play the stupid red-blue game then you need to reread my post. If you are suggesting that things didn’t go down in the way I described then by all means opine. Otherwise, what is your point?

Nov. 19, 2012 at 10:12amIs it any wonder that fewer people are flying and that the airlines are in deep financial doo-doo?
With the constant reports of theft and inappropriate groping, not to mention the refusal to profile (“the blond six year old could be a terrorist, but let the swarthy guy carrying a Koran can’t be a threat” mentality), the TSA is a bad joke. While the concept of the TSA was valid and well-intentioned, its execution has proven atrocious.

I have no problem with the concept of screening passengers in order to ensure the safety of all on board, but common sense in doing so must prevail over PC bullcrap. It should be done as the Israelis do, starting with (gasp!) profiling. The example I pointed out in my original post was something that I witnessed — a little girl of about six years was singled out for a search, while the guy with a strong middle eastern accent and carrying a Koran breezed on through. The TSA workers, saddled as they are with ridiculously unrealistic PC restraints, are only window dressing and are allowed to merely go through the motions, while doing little or nothing towards their theoretical goal of ensuring the passengers’ safety. As a result, they make air travel a nightmare, and are about as useful as the fireman on a diesel locomotive.
