The Rev. Franklin Graham has a message for Christians who are unhappy with the results of the 2012 presidential election: You only have yourself to blame. In a recent interview with CBN News Chief Political Correspondent David Brody, Graham said that the majority of Christians simply don’t vote — inaction that has dire consequences in local and national elections, alike.
“What is your message to folks who are wondering what just happened, and it looks like they feel a semi hit them?,” Brody asked the faith leader, clearly referring to the aftermath of the 2012 presidential election.

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, left, meets with Rev. Billy Graham, center, and his son Franklin Graham, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, in Montreat, N.C. Credit: AP
Graham responded by noting that, based on statistics he’s seen, the majority of Christians do not vote in America. With a dearth of evangelicals heading to the polls, the son of the famed Rev. Billy Graham said that the responsibility for an Obama re-election win is on Christians’ shoulders.
“God is in control, and if Christians are upset, they need to be upset at themselves,” he told Brody. “We need to do a better job of getting our people — the Church — to vote.”
While he maintained that he’s not telling people how to vote (though he did emphasize the need to “stand for Biblical values”), he emphasized the need for adherents to be politically active at the local, state and national level. It’s not just the presidency that matters, he said, going on to note school boards, city councils and other venues as monumentally important to dictating the nation’s trajectory.
“We need to vote for men and women that believe in God,” he continued. “If Christians would just vote, then elections in this country would be much different.”
Watch his comments, below:
After noticing Graham’s interview, NBC’s Domenico Montanaro took the preacher’s assessment to task, claiming that his views about the evangelical voting population simply aren’t accurate. Montanaro wrote:
But Graham’s assertion — and implication that had white Christian evangelicals just showed up in bigger numbers, President Obama would have lost — is off base.
In fact, white evangelicals/born-again Christians made up the same percentage of the electorate as they did in 2008 – 26%. They voted for Mitt Romney, a devout Mormon, by a wider margin than they did for Sen. John McCain four years ago.
And, they made up a larger share of the electorate in 2012 than in 2004, when the Christian Right supposedly fueled George W. Bush’s reelection. They also voted for Romney with the exact same margin as for Bush in 2004, 78%-21%.
However, when it comes to the actual proportions, Graham may have had a solid point in claiming that less than half of Christians actually vote. Based on the U.S. Census and current voting patterns, Montanaro notes that fewer than half of the evangelical community’s members headed to the polls:
The U.S. Census says there are more than 311 million people in the United States. If evangelical adults are 26 percent of them, then there would be 80 million potential voters.
So far, 123 million votes have been counted in this election – and that number will get higher by the millions as votes continue to be counted like in 2008. Evangelicals made up 26 percent of them, therefore, about 32 million evangelicals voted – less than half of their population.
If voting were compulsory, Christians may not sway the balance, as Montanaro notes. But considering that it’s not mandatory in America, the reporter may be splitting hairs. Remember, Graham’s contention was that getting all Christians out to the polls would have an impact. If, indeed, 100 percent of evangelicals voted and other demographics remained stagnant or at their current rates, Christians would certainly make a dent in elections.

Who says that churches have to give up their 501c-3′s to talk about political issues? The issues were adressed in our church and the Bible says that there are 4 absolutes, non-debateable issues according to God’s word. The sanctity of life, sex, marriage and the soverignty of Israel with Jerusalem as its capital.

If and when churches would freely speak The Truth.., they would loose their tax exemption.
I am not talking about churches giving lip service to their membership about voting. I am talking about EDUCATING their membership about the truth of what is really goin on in this country. If and when that would ever happen, trust me…..they would LOOSE THEIR TAX EXEMPTION.

Be encouraged then, because the good men and women I have the privilige of ministering along side with are on our way to a battle with the IRS. Don’t worry, losing our 501c-3′s would be a blessing in disguise. It would embolden other churches to preach freely and support God-fearing candidates by name. I know churches that are voluntarily giving up the tax exempt right so they can have the right to endorse from the pulpit.

Nov. 20, 2012 at 1:59amYou want to talk bad about Mormons. I’ve had enough, of you so-called ‘believers’ who think you can tell us who we are. Well let me make it plain for you. We are members of the “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” we believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ the only Begotten Son and the Holy Spirit who leads and guides us here on earth. Instead of spending your time tearing down our Church and our beliefs in Christ, why don’t you go out and help a neighbor or cook some dinner for a sick friend, why don’t you go out and visit those who are in prison, how about a smile to befriend someone who is lonely or feel left out, why don’t you pick up a shovel or a hoe and go help someone plant a garden, why don’t you pick a King James version of the Holy Bible and read the New Testament, then read the Old Testament, then read the Book of Mormon then you can come back here and tell me who is a Christian, tell me what it feels like to live a-day-in-the-life of a ‘Mormon’ (only a nickname), until you have done so, then you have no right to say a single word of us Latter-day Saints. Start off slow, as you may get weary of well doing, it takes a complete conversion tio find joy in serving one’s neighbors friends and enimes alike, but I promise you won’t have time to bad mouth a Mormon or any other religious person after that. Maybe start with St. Paul’s admonition – you should be able to find that on your own – hint (New Testament, book or letter beg

I think it’s because a lot of people secretly prayed that the liberals eyes would be opened. Only God knows who will and who will not come to him. We have free will, but He knows time from the end to the beginning. He knows who will ultimately decide what. Maybe the only way to open their eyes is to let them suffer. That seems to be the reason the Mittster lost, from what I’ve heard the DNC had a better “ground game” on election day. So, now the election process is going to become a contest to see who can get the most idiots to vote for their canidate? Nov. 19, 2012 at 6:14pmI see many comments on here that are just not true about “Mormons”. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I can tell you that we ARE christians as much as anyone else on here. Christ is the center of our religion and who we look to for our example on how to live. What I find offensive is the many voices who seem to “speak” for OUR Savior. He is the only one who can say whether I am a christian or not.
Romney is not a perfect man(remember there was only 1 who was), but the principles he strives to live by are based on the teachings of the 1 true Savior(not obama). Compare the “actions” not the empty words of obama to the teachings of Jesus Christ and I find it hard to see how so many have been fooled into putting this evil man into office for another 4 years.
In the end, we will get what we deserve for looking to government(obama) for the answers, and not to God.

As an evangelical, I can assure you that you and I do not worship the same Jesus. We do not share common belief in the deity of Jesus and Jesus didn’t have spiritual brothers, especially Lucifer. John tells us that the anti Christ spirit denies Jesus is God in the flesh. Anti-Christ really means “another” Christ, which is what the Mormon church teaches. Paul told us to not even believe the words of another gospel or even the words of an “angel” if they conflict with the Christ of Paul. This is precisely how the Mormon faith was founded, contrary to the words of scripture.
All the Mormon’s I know are good people but they are eating of the good fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, not from the tree of life. It is not my contention to fight but to emplore you to put the flesh inspired book of Mormon down for a season and read the Spirit-inspired Word of God alone and tell me after that your Mormon-based concept of Jesus isn’t challenged.

Nov. 20, 2012 at 1:58amYou want to talk bad about Mormons. I’ve had enough, of you so-called Christians who think you can tell us who we are. Paul’s admonition – you should be able to find that on your own – hint (New Testament, book or letter begins

WRONG. God is NOT in control. If anything he gave us free will to either sin or do right by him—if you believe that—which incidentally, I do not.
EVIL people are in control.
God is in control. Make me laugh. If he were in control, he wouldnt have put Obama in office….or is this to ‘teach’ us a lesson….like children dying of cancer, or a war that kills millions, or Stalin and Mao killing tens of millions.
What a jape. God is in control. Its moronic. Duplicitous and silly. You can’t have ‘free will’ to sin or not, and also have ‘God in control’.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 2:10pmThis is a foolish article. The GOP can only blame itself, not the Christians.
First of all, a true Christian could NEVER vote for Obamas abortion and gay policies.
Second, The GOP took too long to figure out who the candidate was going to be.
Third, Then it took a long time to figure out who the VP would be.
Forth, We will wait again till 1 year out to think about it again. Lets get behind ONE candidate and stick with him/her!
Republicans (and I am one) back stab each other. Dems don’t.
Republicans can’t figure out their story. Dems get a story and stick to it. (Right or wrong)
Republicans want to put the facts out. Dems tell you what they want the story to be. (Easier to do)
Republicans want to play “fair” and not hurt others feeling. Dems will rip you apart if you don’t agree.
Republicans want everyone to have a job and pay taxes. Dems just want to give you other’s money. (More Votes) I could do this all day, but you get the point.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 2:15pmIf you factor in Jews and other religions in the US, Obama snagged the religious vote by a margin on 50% to Mitt’s 48%. That’s hardly a ringing stat for any argument, but it says to me that the religious vote isn’t as polarized as it once was. Those hot-button issues of abortion and gay rights aren’t what they used to be.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 2:09pmI have a great deal of respect for Frank Graham…… but, I feel It’s unfair to make a blanket statement like that and leave the impression that all Christians are irresponsible. But, what he says is true in many instances concerning Christians voting. Already, I’ve heard several Christian aquaintences express the fact that they didn’t vote and gave a wide varity of weak reasons for their nonparticipation. If all Christians would have gone to the polls and voted, the election outcome may very well have been a different story. So, those of you who profess Christianity and did not feel a strong since of responsibility to devote an hour or two to go vote, shame on you because in your case Dr. Graham is 100% correct.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 2:06pmGraham is wrong. Evangelicals and born-agains account for about 25% of the US electorate and they voted pretty the same for McCain as they did for Mitt. What people like Graham don’t want to admit is that evangelicals are much less powerful than they were. Black and Latino Christians voted overwhelmingly for Obama. He has a narrow idea as what “Christian” means.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 8:02pmJesus did teach that the way to lifed was through the “narrow” gate. Why are Black Christians voting for Obama? This is the dilema for the black american church. When I’m born of God, I am an adopted child of God and my primary citizenship is the Kingdom of God I am loyal to God first.. My status as a black person or as a american citizen becomes secondary. The Black Christian community still treats their earthly, natural heritage as primary. All Christians, regardless of race, color or creed are to give their loyalty to God and His Kingdom FIRST, above country or nationality and vote accordingly.

Trust me, I am no fan of rapture comes but you need to read your Bible. The first generation church is a far cry from the Catholic faith I came out of, both in life and in doctrine. A person is saved by faith alone not by works. If a person by their works could satisfy the righteous judgment of God vs. sin, then why did God send his Son to the earth for the purpose of dying on the cross? If works make me right before God then Jesus came and died in vain. Study the cross; if we understand the cross then we understand Christianity.

Voting or supporting a candidate in a election that would be better for this country than the other has nothing to do with breaking Gods rules in those bible verses.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 1:59pmOur family certainly isn’t to blame. We were at the polls early, and Mitt and Paul were our choices. The country we live in is 90% black, so you know who got the vote. We did our parts and it’s all we could do other than convence our democratic friends that Obama was going to throw more havoc the next four years, and probably finish up the chaos and ruin the nation completely, in the next four years. We had our Romney/Ryan signs in our yard (even though we were threatened), and encouraged others on email to vote Romney. I don’t think there was much else we could have done as good Christians. We certainly didn’t threaten those who had Obama signs in their yard. We didn’t yell obsenities to them (even though we thought they were nuts), but we are professionals and even though we don’t agree with liberals, we don’t make a$$e$ out of ourselves or threaten lives (as was done to us). We know that God will look after us, and he’s watching everything that is happening in this country. We’re 100% sure our God is not happy with our “great “O” leader” , or how this country is being driven into the ground. If we’re not taken over by Mexico, the MIddle East, China, Japan, or other foreign countries, within the next four years, “O” will answer to the man above. I wouldn’t want to be there during the conversation. I assume it will go over about as well as Bin Laden’s demise.

1 Thes 4:13-18, 1 Cor 15:50-55, Rev 3:10 These are not from some young girl in the 1800′s
Jesus Christ at His resurrection is the 1st fruit of the resurrection 1 Cor 15:20-23. If you have any Hebraic studies you would know the the phrase FIRST FRUIT is used for a specific reason. A parallel is being shown about a ancient Hebraic harvest cycle. That cycle always starts with the early ripening fruit that is taken to the high priest and he does a wave offering before God.
The harvest cycle had three distinct phases (1) First fruits (2) General harvest (3) Four corners gleaning
One harvest field, three stages to the harvest.
Christ was first, we are next, then the four corner gleanings in during the 7 year tribulation.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 1:52pmI’m noticing a theme here. Everybody else is at fault for the GOP losing, but the GOP is as pure as driven snow and we’re all fools for letting them down.
Explain to me how this isn’t 100% copied from the traditional progressive playbook? Admit no error, see no fault in self, cast blame on others.
Romney last because he’s a Left Wing East Coast GOP RINO. Everybody on this site was saying so during the primaries. Suddenly it became “Well, at least he’s not communist!” (Thanks for that Glenn, wow, what a good reason to vote for a progressive). And now it’s anger that many couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a guy whose philosophies, when you look at his record, aren’t terribly different than Herr Obama.
Again, GOP:
You offered an unsatisfactory candidate that is clearly big government and progressive. This is your fault. You own it. It’s yours. Stop blaming others, man up for once in your pathetic inner beltway lives, and try giving us somebody who actually isn’t a Leftist to vote for.
Not that it matters, the GOP will not. It’s Libertarian Party all the way for me, thank you very much.

Nov. 19, 2012 at 2:17pm@ GHOSTOFJEFFERSON : The Republican Party ” leadership ” is full of Progressives / RINO’s and their ” selection ” of losers is clear. Why NOT run a true Conservative for President and Vice President for a ” Change “. This could be one reason many Christians stayed at home and did not vote. There is NO Substitution for VICTORY !

Nov. 19, 2012 at 2:23pm“Romney lost because he’s a Left Wing East Coast GOP RINO” This is exactly right. I held my nose and voted for the guy, but it wasn’t easy. If this is the best the GOP can offer then it’s time for the party to go away. Now I am hearing the perfectly wrong rhetoric coming from some of the leaders of the party: “We need to become more relevant to the current culture and pander to all the groups that the democrats have been ruining with their bribes since Rosevelt.”
American Conservatives are “conservative” because they seek to conserve the foundational principles as articulated by the Declaration of Independence. The rights and obligations that come from the individual’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Why don’t we hear politicians preaching American doctrine? Progressivism and progressives are enemies of liberty and should be called out on their efforts to destroy the individual and America. The American people need to be schooled on what it means to be an American.

I think many people think their vote doesn’t count and that unseen powerful people make the vote turn out like they want so why bother voting. I think this thinking is LOVED by the party in power. Actually both parties.

You can say it doesn’t make sense, but you see the results of the election. Sense or not, that’s the reality you face now. It appears that a lot of folks do NOT want to vote for Progressive A or Progressive B, and many resent being held to blame because they would not vote against their own principles and against their own self interest. Want those votes back? Offer a Reagan reincarnated. Nothing short of that is going to work, the days of continuing to support Prog A over Prog B are drawing to a close. Learn the lesson or fade into history.
