Newark Mayor Cory Booker, of saving a woman from a burning building fame, challenged one of his Twitter followers on Sunday to join him and “live off food stamps and feed a family for a week.” The female Twitter user, @MWadeNC, describes herself as a “Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR), fighting against any all forms of socialism/communism.”

Interestingly, it was a famous quote by ancient Greek historian Plutarch that ultimately led to the wildly popular mayor’s decision to live off food stamps for a week.

“‘An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics’ Plutarch ancient Greek historian (c. 46 – 120 CE),” Booker tweeted on Sunday.

That led to this exchange:

Should Booker’s offer be officially accepted, the University of Bridgeport, which is holding the “UB SNAP Food Challenge” next month, will possibly “referee” the food stamp challenge during the first week of December.

Booker on Monday confirmed via his official Twitter account that he fully intends to live off food stamps for a week if his challenge is “truly accepted.”

Notice that the conversation here is about raising the amount that food stamps should be, nothing about Govt. getting out of the way of job creators so folks can find a job and not be dependent on Govt. Also, food stamps are supposed to be a PART of your food budget, not the entire amount. You will see obesse people on food stamps all the time.

this is nothing new. politicians have done the same thing since the creation of food stamps. i can recall 4or5 such attempts. it always ends the same. an appeal to increase food stamp allotments. the claim of “shared responsiblity” is telling. is this not communism? when am i or society responsible for someone elses children? help, yes. assist, if need be, but responsible? NO. it’s a false premise to lure you in to the communist mind-set. this technique is nothing new except, to those ignorant of history. recent history at that. so much for a “liberal” education.

I believe the first tweet was it wasn’t he government’s job to determine nutrition. How is that about raising the amount of food stamps? And it’s not a fair accessment. People who scam to get food stamps, still have money for booze and drugs, so they have under the table incomes. They still get their older children to get paid for watching the younger ones, etc. I know a woman, and I’ve mentioned her before. 4 kids, all have obamaphones, food stamps, SSDI, rent subsidies, oldest daughter out of the house, second oldest is a son that has a job (graduated a couple years ago), next daughter is in college, so not living at home, youngest is in 8th grade. I don’t know what the cut off is for needing a baby sitter, but I’ll lay you odds if she can get it, she has her 19-20 year old son watch the 13 year old for money from the government, and I’ll bet she watches her son’s illigimate daughter for money.

How about trying one-week running a small business? Waking in the morning and working. Then coming home at night; perform marketing and finances. On Saturday mop up the loose ends. At the same time perform household chores and get in a little exercise. Get rest. Moderate alcohol use and and avoid marijuana.

In the real world we do this week after week.

How many government subsidized people have this type of work ethic; for even one week?

Hence America’s decline into debt (Hades).

AMEN to this brother…I worked harder today than anyone Booker’s ever known and I’ll wake up and do it again tomorrow. Run a business, do every job necessary….plug every hole, worry about every dime, plan for future competitiveness….aaahh! Wife’s mad…I work too much, but got be preoccupied cause if not I’ll lose my edge. I can count on no one…nothing between me and failure but me. The family I hired and the family I sired both need me to be “on it” always. @#%$ that was a good quote….I MADE THAT UP!

Progressives got no idea…they think govts make jobs. They also think businesses exist to make jobs…HA HA. My business exists to feed my family and entertain me….when it ceases to do either…it’ll disappear and the jobs with it. If someone wants a job from me they need to make my life easier and show me I can’t exist without them…when they do…they’ll have a GREAT job as long as they want it!

A steep imbalance between the rich and the poor has always been the consequence of the Government colluding with Private Sector . The government picks winner and losers via regulation. Where this hasn’t been evident is when the Central Authority runs everything.

Accelerated Spending/GDP has always been the demise all of human States. Eventually the natural resources cannot support the spending. Debt and war is the final answer.

The New Democratic Party is either massively ignorant to Natural Law (science and stuff), or they are thieves. Without deficit spending they couldn’t support their initiatives.

The American Ideal is unique; it requires the government to spend within it means. The American Ideal has been bastardized. Too bad the Founders didn’t write a balanced budget amendment.

Feeding a family on food stamps would be ridiculously easy if they restricted their purchases to the same things that working poor families do: less expensive cuts of meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables, flour, sugar, spices, etc. It’s when you start buying expensive meats, frozen dinners, cookies, cereals, candy, chips, and other processed foods that the bill may get too high. A simple food budget would work wonders for these folks, and they wouldn’t have any difficult in feeding themselves on the food stamp allowance.

I’ve seen people on food stamps in front of me at the store register with all “brand” name products, fruits, vegetables, chicken, meat, etc. Trust me, they eat better than most people on an extremely tight budget.

My challenge is for you to go to a grocery store, any grocery store and watch for those using “EBT” cards and/or “WIC” and see what they are buying. No one buys real food, only boxes and cans. Oh yea, and crab legs and steak just to make you angry.

This is where the real “recession/depression” is. This is where the bread lines/soup lines are. Hidden behind the EBT cards. We can’t shame them for spending our $$$ because it looks like they are using a debit/credit card.

    Love that Plutarch quote.
Problem is, liberals mistake this SYMPTOM for a CAUSE.
Inequality happens when GOVT limits freedom. When free people are allowed to use their own property to benefit their own interests, prosperity results, there are fewer poor in the first place, and for those that remain, there’s a higher standard of living and more disposable income for people to give away to take care of them.
Capitalism is and always has redistributed wealth much more efficiently than any state “solution” because it’s done freely, and based on the merits of the goods and services in exchange, rather then on the political benefit an outside party perceives.

Black Americans, like so many of us, are the victims of a public education.

Black Americans are taught so little about their history they are vulnerable deception and schemes as are any with a poor education. Ignorance leading to poverty caused JFK to start the New Frontier Program for 4 counties in Kentucky. Within a few years that program changed names snared black Americans in increasing numbers into poverty. Today the War on Poverty is lording over more folks in poverty by a significant number than when it got its name in 1964.

Every effort control wages since the 1930s has failed. With each round of changes the effect is to raise the unemployment level. Black American’s employment has been increasingly and disproportionally adversely effected with each round wage control fixes.

What a crock. I know how the food stamp program works. I knew a single mother with 2 children (16, 8) who got $512 a month in ‘food stamps’ back in 2010! Their cupboards and refrigerators (they needed 2!) were overflowing. Mayor Booker is full of it. The amount that people get (at least where I live) is more than enough to live on. Besides, are food stamps supposed to cover all a family’s nutritional needs, or to be a supplement? For the non-disabled, I think we know that answer to that. More Democrat distortion.

Let me assure you that food stamps today cover things they were NEVER meant to cover originally ~~~ steak, lobster, fine cheeses, ice creams, wonderful prepackaged frozen meals (yes, they ALL have refis and freezers), expensive pickles, olives, dressings~~~ things I couldn’t afford to buy when in graduate school and having to use my own REAL money to buy groceries for my husband and me. It used to hack me off to be counting our pennies and these big fat mamas even way back then would waltz through the lines with grocery carts filled with things we couldn’t buy. I hated the abuse then, and I hate it now. That has been almost fifty years ago.

I’d rather see the mayor eating like a regular working person and not dressed in $1,000+ suits. I’d be more impressed.

While recovering from an injury, I was unable to work and had zero income. With little choice I applied for food stamps and was given a card with $200.00. I told the case worker that I thought that would be more than enough to tide me over for the next 2 or 3 months, then she said I would be getting that each month!!!
I am a divorced male that lives on my own and thought it was an outrageous sum of money for food each month! Especially since I raised my son on my own with no support or assistance and my weekly food bill, including packed school lunches five days a week, was between $75.00 & $80.00 A WEEK!

2 weeks later guilt had overcome me and I asked to be taken off food stamps. Today at nearly 50 years old I just under went a triple-bypass and am unemployed and find myself in a situation where I could really benefit from them but I am told I am not eligible with no reason given.

Yet I know of kids in their 20′s that don’t work or go to school and still get food stamps and live in government housing. Sure wish I knew how they are scamming the system…

Food stamps is based on how much you make and how big you family is. One of the things about food stamps is you don’t pay taxes on what you buy.

Give me $30/wk, $120/mo, and I’ll feed a family of four. I will not purchase prepared foods, and a good amount of the food will be starchy such as potatoes, rice and pasta. I make close to $100k a year, and I cook my own grub. I can afford to eat steaks, and other choice cuts of meat, but I do not believe it is worth the $8/$9 a lb. for it. Instead, I opt for pork and chicken on the bone. Learn how to season your food, and you’ll never get tired of the food you cook.

I read a story by some moron in NYC who decided to live off welfare or something for a week. First thing she does is go to a deli and buy $6 a pound cold cuts for lunch and then starts whining how are they going to make it through the week. Then there are the stupid ketchup soup commercials. Anyone who would make soup out of ketchup when you can buy a darn can of soup for 25 cents in a thrift store is beyond me. They need to go back to teaching home ec in school and teach these idiots the basics of daily life since apparently they know nothing.

I think I MAY have gotten a can of soup for 25 cents after it was already on special and I had coupons on top of that. It’s not unusual (to be loved by anyone…sorry) to see soup for $1.10 – $1.35 a can for just regular old chicken soup.

Nope, I will not want the details. Can’t waste time on losers like Booker or his little buddy.

What an idiotic idea. If you’re going to play the game play it right Booker. Use as much of the 81 programs available to the “disadvantaged” and demonstrate how you can rise well above poverty level with little effort.

It depends… you don’t have to buy the basic staples every week… salt, flour.. general basics… if you actually COOK instead of buying prepared foods it may be possible… I don’t know… been living on my savings for the past two years. Refuse to apply for government assistance.

Funny how many on food stamps seem to be buying the name brand prepared foods, and buy top of the line steaks. I know this because a friend of mine manages the check-out of a supermarket. They can get cash back after their order and proceed to buy cigarets or alcohol. I respect you very much for what you’re doing. Self reliance is a dying art with people anymore.

Well, I have learned that potato flakes make a can of soup go a lot further! I also have learned that steel cut oats are worth the difference! You eat a lot less and don’t get hungry later… those $3 dried bags of soup can make several meals with potato flakes and extra spices…. occasionally making my own bread which is much denser. I also use a pressure cooker to make stew or a big pot of beans. A big pot will last several days. It is amazing how little one can live on when you have to!

How are they going to get food stamps (SNAP) when they don’t qualify?

Apparently, race is the qualifying factor.

Actually, Obama has ads on Mexican tv telling the people how to apply for our food stamps here. So I have heard. I don’t recognize our country anymore.

      @Monk,
Of course the answer is that they get different rules for themselves. That’s how all liberals operate. They refuse to live in the world their own rules create, in general.
