Petraeus Mistress Reportedly ‘Devastated’ & ‘Deeply Regrets’ Affair’s Damage to Her Family

WASHINGTON (AP) — Paula Broadwell, whose extramarital affair with CIA chief David Petraeus led to his resignation, is telling friends she is devastated by the fallout.

A person close to Broadwell said Sunday she deeply regrets the damage that’s been done to her family and everyone else’s, and she is trying to repair that and move forward. The friend spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

A group of friends and neighbors welcomed Broadwell, her husband, Scott, and their young sons back to their home in Charlotte, N.C., after Broadwell spent more than a week being hounded by media while staying at her brother’s home in Washington. The family friend said she was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from her neighbors.

Broadwell is still being investigated by the FBI over classified documents found on her laptop and in her home, which investigators believe the author gathered while researching her biography of Petraeus in Afghanistan. Investigators say many of the documents are old and may no longer be classified despite their labels, and say Broadwell told them she did not get them from Petraeus.

The FBI stumbled onto their relationship after tracking anonymous emails Broadwell allegedly sent to Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, warning Kelley to stay away from Petraeus and Afghanistan war commander Gen. John Allen.

Kelley served as sort of an unpaid social liaison for Central Command, hosting parties at her and her husband’s home, where senior officers would mingle with Tampa’s elite. Officials say Kelley kept in near constant contact with Allen, and Petraeus before him, apparently trading on her friendship with the four-star commanders to advance her social status in the military-conscious community of Tampa.

The scandal widened when the Pentagon announced it was looking into that copious correspondence between Kelley and Allen, searching for possible evidence of an inappropriate relationship between the two married people. Allen’s nomination to lead the U.S. European Command has been put on hold, pending results of the investigation, though officials now concede only a handful of the emails between Kelley and Allen are of flirtatious or questionable nature.

The FBI found no reason to further investigate Petraeus, but the CIA is now investigating whether the former director behaved inappropriately, such as possibly using agency resources to further the affair.

    Let’s see; two highly esteemed military men’s reputations in the tank, the Secret Service , some Navy Seals , a military group responsible for actually killing Bin Laden ( shhh..don’t bring THAT up in the White House ) , a Coptic Christian who supposedly was going to put out a video denigrating Mohammed, George Zimmerman, a Hispanic ( darn, the Dems focused on ” black teen wearing a hoodie ” shot by gun” was sure he was some rich Jewish gated community owner ) serving a Neighborhood Watch duty with a GUN….and now a wealthy Tampa socialite who entertained military gatherings….See any pattern here ? Not sure how Broadwell fits in but she was the catalyst…Bottom line : Christians, guns, MEDIA, military, rich people, MEDIA, American icons, gated communities , MEDIA ….24/7. Now about that messy ” Stand Down ” order……REMEMBER THAT ABOUT BENGHAZI..

      My thoughts exactly. They regret getting caught, not the cheating. She continued to be involved with him after the affair was supposedly over, so if she regretted her actions, wouldn’t she have cut those ties? Her kids are the innocent victims in this.

    AS the world gets off on this oh so titillating story of self gratification, it seems to have forgotten the real issue – which is that the American government stood by and watched in “real time” while Ambassador Stevens and three other very brave young Americans were brutally murdered in cold blood –
    AND DID NOTHNG TO RESCUE THEM !!!!!!

      According to sources in the State Department and the CIA, and intercepted communications from the Muslim Brotherhood, Obama “staged” the attack in Benghazi in order to create a monumental “October Surprise” that would guarantee him re-election.
      Yes, you read that right, and no, I’m not making this up. Obama, we now know, is and has been working with the Muslim Brotherhood secretly to engineer the release of the “Blind Sheik,” Omar Abdel Rahman, the mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center attack.
      In Obama’s October Surprise, he intentionally set up the consulate to have no security so that Chris Stevens could be kidnapped, and held for ransom by Al-Qaeda (and the Muslim Brotherhood).       Yeah, it’s kind of funny that the sacred vows of marriage don’t kick in at even the mere thought of having an affair, saying “Uh, no, not happening, you promised your spouse. Don’t even thing about it!”

      To me, it’s kind of like the oath of office taken by our elected Representatives, Senators, President and appointed officials — who then blithely violate this oath by voting for or signing into law — laws that completely violate both the letter and spirit of the Constitution — which is much more severe than breaking marriage vows, and even more destructive.

    I’d imagine the ridicule her kids will face will be crushing. Let’s not even try to estimate her husband’s anguish.

    The support from her neighbors may fade when they see who the Sewer Rat-in-Chief nominates to succeed Petraeus. Susan Rice may be available after the Senate rejects her to replace Hillbilly Hillary. There’s an ex-journalist in the office of James Clapper, Director of Intelligence. How about Al Sharpton or Anderson Cooper?

    I’m certain that the Sewer Rat-in-Chief will seek input from the Muslim Brotherhood before he makes his selection.

      DUBLINTHEWAGONS, I have to agree with you. Once has to consider just what has she done like this in the past. As crude as this is, I recall the old saying back when I was still in the Army. “Its not who you know, but who you blow.” This may have been a one time slip on here part, but I get a different feeling. As far as that goes, I will not just point a finger at the woman in this case. I also have to wonder if Petreaus has strayed in the past as well. These two brought massive international embarrassment upon themselves, their nation, as well as providing a distraction for the administration to use.

    i can’t imagine how Mrs. Petraus feels, let alone the Gen. who is now disgraced and lost his position. Amazing how neighbors and friends welcomed her back, disgusting! She has thrown America into a tailspin and still get a welcome home. Everyone gets what they deserve except Mrs. Petraus and Paula’s husband. I have no sympathy for the Gen. and Paula, none.

    While the national security implications are of concern, the underlying facts are that these people showed lack of respect for their closest family. Lack of responsibility to those with whom they have shared vows. Lack of self-control or good judgement which might have given them the ability to move past whatever attraction they had. Pure self-indulgence as with many in our culture today.
