Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday referred to Israel as “a terrorist state,” a remark that the Obama administration has yet to challenge.

“Israel is a terrorist state,” Erdogan said at an Islamic conference in Istanbul. He also accused Western nations of ignoring the “sufferings of Muslims in Palestine, Syria and Myanmar because of lack of oil.”

For its part, the White House has chosen silence as its response to Erdogan’s intensely anti-Israel rhetoric, a policy that the Associated Press’ Matt Lee seems to think does more harm than good.

“How do you — this whole thing of saying nothing, I’m not sure I understand why you think that that’s helpful to the situation. You say that it would not be helpful for you to discuss any of your conversations, that quiet diplomacy is the way to de-escalate that. Well, you’ve been doing your quiet diplomacy now for almost a week. How’s it going so far?” Lee asked State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland during Monday’s press briefing.

“We are working hard with the parties. We’re working hard with –” she began to reply.

“Hasn’t it occurred to anybody that maybe being less quiet might get more results, though? Squeaky wheel gets grease, that kind of thing?”

“I’ll let the –”

“You’re being silent while people are dying left and right.”

“Matt, we are being far from silent. The President has –”

“You’re not telling us anything about what you’re – when the Turks come out – when the leaders of Turkey come out and say that Israel is engaged in acts of terrorism and you refuse to say that you don’t agree with that – or maybe you do agree with it – that’s being silent.”

“Matt, we have made a decision that we need to engage in our diplomatic work diplomatically. We have been very, very clear about where we stand on this, which is that – which is –”

“And that’s because you don’t practice diplomacy from the podium? Is that what you’re getting back to?”

Nuland tried to stave off Lee’s tough questions by noting that the White House has repeatedly affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself.

“And yet you won’t stick up for your ally, Israel, when the Turks, another one of your allies, say that they’re engaged in terrorism in Gaza?” Lee asked.

“We have been extremely clear about our concern for Israel’s security, about the fact that Israel has a right to self-defense, but I am not going to go further than that today, Matt,” Nuland responded.

“Why can’t you say that you don’t agree with the Turks?”

“Because I’m not going to get into a public spitting match with allies on either side. We’re just not going to do that, okay?”

“And you think that that’s worse? A public spitting match with one of your allies is worse than hundreds of people dying every day?”

Finally Nuland conceded, “Rhetorical attacks against Israel are not helpful at this moment.”

UPDATE: It looks like Matt Lee’s tough questions have paid off. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland during a Tuesday press conference took a much harder stance against Prime Minister Erdogan’s remarks:

Some of the extremely harsh rhetoric coming from Turkey, we do not consider helpful at all and of course we don’t agree with some of these very difficult statements that have been coming (from) there, and we have made those views clears to the Turks.

  Does Israel have a right to defend herself? Yes.
  Does Israel engage in, um, ‘ungentlemanly conduct’ with other nations – including the USA? Absolutely.
  As Dr. Ron Paul pointed out some time ago the Israeli PM himself said, they didn’t need outside help. Just let these settle the score.
  But there can be no doubt that it is to the advantage of some very powerful men in the world that these conflicts are fostered and encouraged … on both sides.

I don’t think it’s a very wise decision for the U.S. to cede all power in the middle east to the anti-American muslim extremeists, or the Chineese, or the Russians. One of those outcomes would happen for sure if we cut ties with Israel now. I do agree that we could and should cut back on foreign bases globally. But without Israel, we lose our stake in the region, and there is too much riding on fossil fuels to give up on the entire region.

  i watched the clip, and so what?. they are surrounded on all sides by people and nations that want to see them burn. this latest conflict was not started by them. just like here in our country, where we chastise the rich for being successful, in Israel we chastise them for defending themselves. oh the poor palestinian people, the women and children are dying as a result of Israel defending themselves. what i have observed is that Israel is being as surgical with their efforts as they possibly can. but when rockets are being launched from schoolyards and courtyards in front of mosques, i don’t get why anyone demonizes Israel for this. hamas puts these rocket sites on these locations, why doesn’t palestine expel hamas from its country?

  I watched the clip and big flipping deal. He spoke the truth. First, he was saying that even though Clinton and other administrations were pro-Palestine he wasn’t afraid to stand up to them because he knew the American public as a whole was still on their side. Which is true.
  Second, he wants to break the Palestinians will to fight by crushing them. I don’t see a problem here either. This is how wars are supposed to be fought when you want to win. The nation building thing is crap and is why we are stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan for so long.

  2. It’s chopped up. Too many times have I seen (just in this past election cycle!) where a video is taken and chopped up, edited, and put back together to achieve a certain desired result.
  
  Show me the video in entirety and tell me who took the video and I will consider its content.

  Let’s see, Israel essentially took over and invaded the country thanks to Britain & US help after WW2 and have steadily pushed the Palestinians into little enclaves, bulldozed & took over Palestinian homes and land. Israel routinely cuts power and water to Gaza essentially keeping the Palestinians in a ghetto not unlike the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland during WW2. No one can live the way the Palestians are being treated, especially not any Americans. We have militias and seccessionists just because of a little Obamacare. The Palestinians fight back in the only way they can using suicide bombers, some AKs and some missiles and Israel retaliates using F-16s with laser guided missiles.   2. If Israel is so evil why don’t they just completely destroy all their enemies around them? They are always faced with threats of being wiped of the face of the earth and yet they sit around and only defend themselves when attacked and seem to do so with minimal effect to others. What do you suggest they do, retreat to the sea?
  
  3. Killing innocent people over oil? really? I can safely say regular readers on this site would rather have 100% of our oil come from our own domestic production then by giving billions of dollars to elites in the Middle East, after all we are just funding our own demise! But the truth of the matter is that there is a big “Oil Spigot” in that region of the world and someone is going to have control over it. Now you just have to decide who you would rather control that spigot. The Chinese? Russians? Islamic Extremists (Do you not think these people would just set the oil fields on fire)? Do you really think that any of these people would care what happens to us or the rest of the world for that matter? Tell me how many innocent people these groups have actually killed? I care about keeping those who could challenge our Liberty (China, Russia, an unchecked Iran) from getting the same sort of swagger they (Russia) held over us from 1920′s to 1990′s. Our government already blew a great opportunity to Liberate the world in 1945 and then again in the 1990′s. It wouldn’t have been done by deploying more military all over the place either. But instead we shouldn’t have subsidised their new socialist regeims.

I’m sure the State Department has done as much about Turkey’s anti Israel remarks as it did for their people in Benghazi. Nothing. This is a pro Islamic regime and they are not going to go out of their way to help Israel. The State Department has been anti Israel for decades. They were supposed to move their embassy to Jerusalem years ago but have done NOTHING to obey the elected congress of the United States. These people come from the same colleges and universities that preach hate for Israel and yet support the fake “palestinian” cause.
There is a video available that shows the “palestinian” leaders yelling at Egyptian leaders for not giving their fellow Egyptians more help in the Gaza strip! Egyptians? They were claiming to be from all over the middle east. Not one reference to their “palestinian” background. There are almost a million Muslims that chose to live peacefully in Israel rather than become a part of the “palestinian” wasteland. The “palestinians” are simply squatter Arabs that refused to live peacefully with Israel. The entire middle east belongs to Muslims except for a few hundred miles that Israel lives on. Not one of those other Arab states have helped with the “palestinian” plight because they are are using these people as pawns in a power play against Israel.

They won’t tell us what they are up to because they feel that we, the little people, don’t need to know. He seems to be backstabbing our ally Israel, so Israel is his payment or sacrifice to the Islamic countries in return for a war there. Obama needs his war in the middle east to “necessarily skyrocket” the price of oil, and that is his payment to Putin and also to his green energy buddies, who will benefit greatly. What does Obama get? Obama gets to shakedown the oil and natural gas industries before he takes his boot off their necks and allows them to tap into our huge resources, and he will use the money for handouts like a giant sugar daddy so the majority will love him….just in time for them to demand a third term in office.

Obama’s statement of Israel’s right to defend themselves appears to stop at Israel’s border. He gives no indication that he supports Israel’s right to wipe out a viper’s nest if that nest is located outside their borders.

He is okay with Israel using Iron Dome to stop rockets coming in (at least for now), but don’t expect him to support Israel’s right to go after and eradicate any enemies outside of Israel.

The Living Word of God is breathed into the Bible. So the Bible is an entire library of different kinds of literature. The Bible was the first book ever printed on the printing press, it’s the best-selling book of all time…translated into over 1,946 languages.   The New Testament WAS NOT written exclusively in Greek. It was mostly written in Hebrew, with mostly the letters of Paul to the scattered assemblies were written in Greek whose main spoken language was Greek. A case in point is the book of Hebrews that was probably written by Paul. It was addressed to the Messianic Hebrews whose native tongue was Hebrew. Also take the book of Revelation, John was a Hebrew addressing a mainly Hebrew audience. These books were translated into Greek then Latin, then Olde English.

  Have you ever read Talmud? The Talmud is a legal text that lays down the details of the Jewish legal code and discusses various religious and legal issues. I’ve seen many of the supposed “anti-Christian” quotes and found that over half of them didn’t appear, were mistranslated, or involved misinterpreting a particular phrase. The remainder were taken so far out of context that the original meaning was completely lost.

  We have said ALL ALONG that Romney was going to lose and we will take credit for it. I voted for Virgil Goode because writing in Paul wouldn’t even count. I really wanted to just to say I did because I couldn’t vote for NWO Johnson. I voted 3rd party throughout my ballot except for the last 5 where I just wrote in Ron Paul…just to say I did.
  
  No matter how many times I tell you this you will still use your neocon talking points. I know you are smarter than that because I’m not smart and I can do it. It seems that people like you are NEO-BOTS.
