More than a month after Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans were killed in a September 11 attack on a U.S. outpost in Benghazi, Libya, CBS News is reporting on how, exactly, inaccurate “talking points” were pushed on the American people in the aftermath.

It is well known by now that Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice told five Sunday talk shows that the attack was a “spontaneous” response to a YouTube video, and that White House Press Secretary Jay Carney echoed the sentiment. Though it was obvious to many at the time that terrorism was a factor, now that it has been confirmed, Congress has begun to ask why the inaccurate talking points were pushed.

“Every member in the intelligence community says that references to al-Qaeda were removed by somebody, [but] they don’t know who,” Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) explained over the weekend.

According to CBS sources, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) was responsible, expunging references to “Al-Qaeda” and “terrorism” from the talking points. Though the head of the DNI is Obama appointee James Clapper, CBS is making it explicitly clear that the edits did not come from the White House.

CBS writes, giving more information on how the CIA and the FBI were involved:

CBS News has learned that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) cut specific references to “al Qaeda” and “terrorism” from the unclassified talking points given to Ambassador Susan Rice on the Benghazi consulate attack – with the agreement of the CIA and FBI. The White House or State Department did not make those changes.

…an intelligence source tells CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan the links to al Qaeda were deemed too “tenuous” to make public, because there was not strong confidence in the person providing the intelligence. CIA Director David Petraeus, however, told Congress he agreed to release the information — the reference to al Qaeda — in an early draft of the talking points, which were also distributed to select lawmakers.

“The intelligence community assessed from the very beginning that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack.” DNI spokesman Shawn Turner tells CBS News. That information was shared at a classified level — which Rice, as a member of President Obama’s cabinet, would have been privy to.

An intelligence source says the talking points were passed from the CIA to the DNI, where the substantive edits were made, and then to FBI, which made more edits as part of “standard procedure.” [Emphasis added]

CBS adds that Clapper, who once called the Muslim Brotherhood a “largely secular” organization, reviewed the talking points before they were disseminated. However, their sources were unclear about who within the agency suggested the changes to begin with.

CBS continues, discussing the blowback:

“The points were not, as has been insinuated by some, edited to minimize the role of extremists, diminish terrorist affiliations, or play down that this was an attack,” the official tells CBS News, adding that there were “legitimate intelligence and legal issues to consider, as is almost always the case when explaining classified assessments publicly.”

“Most people understand that saying ‘extremists’ were involved in a direct assault on the mission isn’t shying away from the idea of terrorist involvement,” added the official. “Because of the various elements involved in the attack, the term extremist was meant to capture the range of participants.” [Emphasis added]

Clapper is just another layer from Barry. Barry is responsible and they’re throwing one guy after the other under the bus to cover for him. Also. The point is lost in all of this slight of hand crap. Who is in charge of the Al-Qaeda “linked” terrorists? Why the CIA. Why would the CIA linked Al Qaeda terrorists attack the hand that feeds them? It was a hit. Steven’s discovered too much. What did Steven’s discover? Who ordered the hit? Who ordered the stand down? Who ordered and orchestrated this COVER UP! Let’s get to that, not the affairs, Rice, altered talking points, You Tube movies etc.

  Everyone in Benghazi was saying, “What Video are they talking about?”. Plus the video barely had a thousands hits on it when all this first hit the fan so there’s no way a bunch of Muslims were up in arms about it… So who decided to insert the video as the cause and why?
  
  I agree with TRUECOLORS that this was a ‘HIT” – Not by Al Qaida or any other Muslim extremists… This had all the marks of the biblical story (2nd Samuel, 12) of King David having Uriah the Hittite murdered by asking his generals to place him in the heat of battle and then withdraw. Stevens was possibly involved in gun-running to the Syrian rebels. Did the White House consider him a liability who knew too much? This entire episode stinks to high heaven of cover-up after cover-up. I applaud Fox News, The Blaze, and WND for pursuing the truth no matter where it leads for they are the only ones who have our back.

  I can’t help but wonder when that bus is going to have so many bodies under it that it no longer goes anywhere. Maybe America will get lucky and it will happen somewhere that the crime is high enough they’ll think it’s been jacked up to steal everything off it. I can think of a lot of movies where vehicles are stripped to the bone.   2 things – What about argument about that the video was the cause of the attacks? Even if this lame excuse had any merit, the video explanation was a LIE! It was not a withholding of information. It was the dissemination of misinformation.
  
  Second, why isn’t anyone focusing on Obama who came out a full week later saying the same thing? And when Obama spoke at the UN, that was a far more significant venue from a more prominent spokesman – i.e. POTUS. If you lie to the American people, that is one thing. If you make a statement like this in front of the whole word and then use that lie to justify offering a diatribe about the unacceptability of defaming “the prophet of Islam,” you have some explaining to do. I would think the president’s actions would be even more blameworthy than what Rice said and did.

  1. Let’s get to why a U.S. Ambassador was left vulnerable in a hostile area.
  2. For Obama to say the best way to deal with “the video” was to ignore it – then give it more world wide advertising at the U.N. and television than even an award winning blockbuster movie deserves; they did that for their own disinformation.
  3. Petraeus knows why Ambassador Stephens was left in the lurch.
  4. Has a new Ambassador to Libya been appointed? Maybe Susan Rice would like that job? Or even Senator Kerry?

This is why I don’t understand why everyone was criticizing Ambassador Rice for what she was told to go on those five shows and say. It doesn’t matter what she said, everybody knows it was a terrorist attack. The real question is why wasn’t security enhanced when there was so much evidence that there were bad actors in the region? Thats what I want to know. This is all a game. Ya wanna know what else I think? I think Barry sent her out there on purpose, knowing that she doesnt havemuch to do with it, but also knowing that people would fixate on the lie she told and not the real story. Seems like people fell for it. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

  Yeah I think she was used, I dont think she had anything to gain from lying or misleading people. She just did what she was told to do and didn’t want to go against the president or whomever crafted what she was supposed to say. Whatever the case, I dont care what she said. It’s obvious it was terror, I just wanna know why we were so woefully unprepared, that just doesn’t make sense. People need to stop acting so surprised and offended that the government lied to them and try to figure out WHY they lied.   Wrong – the real question is who told Ambassador Rice claim there was “in fact” a spontaneous demonstration over a video? Its one thing to say DNI scrubbed the talking points of any reference to terrorism or Al Queda, but then this fabricated story of a demonstration was put in its place. DNI did not do this!!!!!!!!   The point about criticizing Rice is that she willingly and knowingly went out on the five Sunday shows and lied to the American people, towing the Obama administration line. She has proven herself completely untrustworthy to anyone and everyone other than Obama – so why would or could she be an effective and truthworthy Secty of State working with other countries. and all of this is putting aside how mediocre she’s been as US Ambassador to the UN, how completely anti- Israel she is and how she, when at the Africa desk of the State Dept under Clinton was instrumental in talking Albright, Sandy Berger and Clinton out of accepting bin Laden on a silver platter from the Sudan – brilliant move on her part.

Imagine Nancy Pelosi… or even Michelle Obama (since Hillary didn’t have any credentials either – other than being First Lady and then perpetually running for office… It’s not like she did anything as a Senator other than turn around and run for President). I’m far more scared of the alternative possibilities than I am of a ‘useful idiot’ like Rice. Let Rice have the slot… she’ll just get thrown under the bus before her term is up anyway!

  She is being criticized because she was privy to classified and unclassified information. Having both standards of information, or at least access to both, and still going on and publicly spouting a bunch of garbage means she’s equally at fault for spreading misinformation. I can guarantee if she has clearance, she saw the classified version as well. When something happens, everyone wants to know and information isn’t as protected as they think it is. But to send someone out with bad information, knowing she will be criticized is called deflection. No pity for her.
  
  This travesty needs to haunt those responsible. But I’m sure too many people will just forget about it, leave it in the past and move on to the next squirrel.

We all know it was terrorism. From the start. This is a farce. Obama lies on a daily basis. The election is over. Now WHO gave the order to stand down and leave our men stranded to die! This is what the hearings SHOULD be about. Impeachment proceedings to immediatly follow. Because I firmly believe it came from the White House. I believe it was a decision to not stir up any problems before the election and they thought it ended with Stevens. They would use an excuse that there wasn’t anyway to get people in in such a small timeline. Those brave ex Seals threw coal on the fire and by that time the White House made the decision to let them die. To cover things up. Why was the CIA annex there anyway? What was going on there? Was it a secret? Patraeus knows why, he is the head of the CIA, he is deeply involved. But it was Obama who decided those men were not worth saving, because he is a COWARD. And he does not feel like he needs to explain any decisions he makes to the people. All Hail King Obama.

  Did you hear Glenn read this morning what some schools in TX(?) are teaching kids about the founders being terrorists and equating it to the islamic jihadists (this being the Tea Party)? Check to see if your kids are in schools teaching from modules instead of textbooks which can be reviewed, and if so pull them out immediately. There’s a real effort to teach American kids the same kind of indoctrination that the Palestinian kids are getting about who the guys who care are, and who those who would takever the world.

I have one question. If the information that Al Qaeda affiliates were responsible was tenuous and therefore it was decided it was not to be included in Rice’s Sunday show talking points…. exactly what was the information they had that the violence was due to a spontaneous protest due to an anti-Muslim video and how is it even possible that information wasnt deemed tenuous? Two months later how is it even possible that we have heard ZERO details about intelligence backing up Rice’s Sunday morning show claims regarding the spontaneous protest as the result of the video — ZERO? Can someone please answer me that?

So if Clapper removed references to Al Queda and terrorism – who added the fiction about a spontaneous demonstration and a video. WHERE did this fictional account originate and WHO told Ambassador Rice to trot this ridiculous story out five days later on the Sunday TV shows? She certainly knew it was fiction (all lies) and she knew why she was out there pushing the lies. The only person benefiting from this crazy story was the CANDIDATE, the President, Mr. Obama.

Let me get this right…Clapper removes the referrences to terror groups with the agreement of the CiA and FBI- that bus is warming up- and Clapper is an Obama appointee- because at the time it was not 100% certain that it was a terror attack..but proceeds to trot out Susan Rice to blame the video instead which at the time was supposedly a certainty.
So it’s the video’s fault..no question according to Rice from the talking points received supposedly from Clapper.
It’s time for a special committee to cut through this fog.
