Here’s Why You Can Still Eat Pie After a Filling Thanksgiving Dinner
I don’t know what your grandma called it — mine called it the “special pocket” — but it’s that special place where you can still fit dessert even after your 5-year-old self told your parents that you were too full to eat the rest of your meal.
Turns out even though Grandma was just trying to do her slightly smug duty of helping you defy your parents and still get dessert, there is some scientific backing for the “special pocket” that many stuffing themselves on Thanksgiving Day will experience.
In a more general explanation about overeating a few months ago, ASAP Science explained that this mechanism could go all the way back to times when eating a meal high in fat and sugar wasn’t a regular occurrence. As the doodle-driven video explains, there are hormones that help tell our brain we’re full to stop eating, but fat and sugar can override this system.
Watch the video for more details on why/how we allow ourselves to overeat:

Posted on November 21, 2012 at 12:52amThe headline is a bit misleading. The article and video didn’t say anything about “WHY YOU CAN STILL EAT PIE AFTER A FILLING THANKSGIVING DINNER” It did explain why you do, but not why you can. I was hoping for permission there somewhere.

I miss her.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 2:09pmWhen I was a little one with four brothers and three sisters and my dad was layed off work, I remember all we had were two small chickens given to us by a kind hearted neighbor. We didn’t eat much but, we had food and that’s what counted. After, I remember eating my favorite filling food, Raw Oatmeal with Can O Milk and sugar. I could eat all I wanted and didn’t feel bad about cheating the others out of food, because they ALL hated that meal. But we all grew up with a strong character and learned to trust God no matter in much or little. After all my friends, if we are not saved and we die, we’re just dead and we rot. BUT, if we are saved, we have Glory to look forward to, we WIN…..and then later we have a NEW EARTH and a New Heaven on Earth — Revelation 21. No more Tears. So, no matter how DARK things are here in this life, look what we have to look forward to? Let this Great knowledge comfort you every time you have concerns.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 10:24amSome of us will be thankful to have balogna sandwiches for Thanksgiving.
Was anyone aware that J. P. Morgan Chase sends out foreclosure letters if you become one month behind on a mortgage? Does this seem fair with the economy in the shape it’s in?
Does anyone think that this is a fair act among struggling American’s trying to put food on the table, without work, and is is only me that finds this truly disgusting? Is this the “Obama” way of running our country?
Please, someone let me know if this seems fair? We have friend and family who are struggling and think JPMC is out of line in doing this.
Who’s worried about having pie after a nice Thanksgiving dinner. We, among others, will be thankful for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. God help this country and the people who have worked hard all their lives and in dyer need of help.
Signed: Struggling American
Thank you.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 10:52amIt is not my intention to seem insensitive here, but normally that happens when people fall behind on paying their bills. It really sucks but they have to do their job too. Businesses are nervous about staying afloat too and they don’t want to have to lay-off their employees. They don’t have any more confidence in the economy than I or the rest of us do. I have felt the pinch, had to let go a few luxuries so I can keep the necessities. The company I’m working for is walking a very thin line right now and all my coworkers are nervous. I just thank God I’m still working for however long that lasts. All we can do is live within our means and be grateful for what we have; if we have anything. I hope you find the answer to your prayers..God bless you and try keep your chin up friend.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 11:19amIn some countries just having food on the table would be thanks enough. Quit whining. Living in a house that is mortgaged isn’t a right, it is an agreement. Whining is what labor unions are for, join one. Or sign up for food stamps (Nanny state Pelosi bets on them and have dinner on your neighbor’s dollars), ask a church to help, most will, or get in a food line and you might meet the next president doing community service, or make yourself happy, which is a state of mind (you may not see tomorrow) or be thankful regardless. Positivity is a magnet, negativity gains nada. You think all those who are successful haven’t had hard times? And overcome. Or invite your neighbor over for a good old baloney sandwich or peanut butter sandwich and as you wrote be thankful. Not meant to be mean but many have fought and died for the privilege of being a citizen and many of us will thank God we were fortunate being born here. And an aside. Dire, not dyer. And, I am not worried about pie, I’m having it calories and all with whipped cream.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 5:48pmHi, struggling American. I empathize with you. Growing up fairly poor, we learned what to eat, that was filling and cheap. Not peanut butter and jelly. More like beans and cornbread, and anything you could grow in a garden and can. Your tummy will be filled, and your cholesterol will go down. Boil a chicken with celery and onion and carrots. Debone and add self rising flour dumplings. Very cheap, and very filling and will feed many mouths. Just add more dumplings. You can eat cheap, you will have to cook. Go to Goodwill for clothing. Don’t eat out, ever. For the price of one fast food meal, you can buy enough veg., beans and flour to feed a family for a day. Good luck.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 9:14amI can’t eat near as much as I used to be able to, sine I had my spleen taken out. Don’t know what a spleen has to do with a stomach, but if I over-eat, it feels like I am going to have a heart attack, my tummy hurts so much.
