Should This Woman Lose Her Job for Flipping Off the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (And Then Posting a Pic of It)?

(Photo: Facebook via Gawker)
Two women have been placed on unpaid leave and could lose their jobs after a photo they took near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery went viral on the Internet.
In the picture Lindsey Stone is seen either yelling or pretending to yell, while giving the middle finger near a sign that asks for “silence and respect.” Her co-worker reportedly took the photo.
According to CBS Boston the image sparked thousands of comments, and while Stone has since deleted the photo and her relevant tweets, she wrote this in response to the initial fury:

(Photo: Facebook via Gawker)
Stone works at a non-profit organization usually referred to as “LIFE,” short for “Living Independently Forever,” that helps adults with disabilities in the Cape Cod area.
Within the past 24 hours there appears to have been a huge resurgence in interest in Stone’s photo, and a Facebook page called “Fire Lindsey Stone” has gotten more than 5,000 “likes.”
Hundreds of angry commenters have also posted on LIFE’s Facebook page, asking why they are continuing to employ such disrespectful individuals.
LIFE responded today on their Facebook page:

(Photo: Facebook)
Reactions are mixed.
One woman commented on LIFE’s page that she doubts Stone and her friend truly “meant no disrespect” in flipping off the Tomb of the Unknowns. Since they appear to have no courtesy for the grief of those who have lost a loved one in the armed forces, she continued, perhaps they need to be taught a far less painful lesson, but a lesson nonetheless.
“I respectfully request you allow them to experience the grief of sudden unemployment,” she wrote, before complimenting the photos of the facility.
Another commenter said they don’t want their disabled family member in the care of people who could flaunt such a horrible lack of judgement.
Still others, though, are saying that the commenters are “overreacting,” and Gawker asks whether Stone should really have her “life ruined” because of a “stupid photo.”
What do you think?

I for one wouldn’t hire her to shovel the s#*t out of my stables.

This is still a free country. So far. Wait until someone does something like that to a building with Obama written on it and see where it goes. WE have an Obama School of Excellence going up in Dallas.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:46pmI disagree. I don’t think this woman should be scapegoated and harassed. Is she a moron? Yes. Does that mean we should have free reign to make her life a living hell? No. The only motivation to do so is revenge, and it’s un-Christian and un-American. Her consequence should be getting fired (if her employer deems her to be a liability). Let her explain her firing on her next job interview… but to effectively brand her? I thought we were finished with Scarlet Letters centuries ago.

She has and had every right to display her disdain for something many of us hold sacred. Whether she yelled in a park or posted on the internet. However, posting this on Facebook does not shield her from her employer’s right to find her actions unbecoming and not worthy of continued employment.
This is a cautionary tail. Actions have consequences.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 4:12pmThere will be the eventual comparison with this woman and the Stone Cold Creamery lady who was fired for her tweet.
Here are the differences:
1- This photo was taken while Ms. Stone was at work, with a co-worker while she was in the care of clients
The Stone Cold Creamery lady was at home, in her off time and was not work related at all.
2- This photo is absolutely offensive to those of us that served. It does go too far. The middle finger makes it way over the top for just an irony humor photo.
The SCC worker showed no disrespect to others but she did show really poor judgement.
3- The SCC lady tried to make her posts private on her own before anyone saw them..This trashbag of a woman and her friend were forced to take down the pics and then lied in a fake apology.
Should she lose her job…YES as this offense was work related. Should she feel the wrath of her peers….YES. She made them look bad. Criminal charges?? NO. No law against being a trashbag of a human being.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 4:13pmOur soldiers fought for the freedom to do this. Even if that freedom is hate and disdain for their sacrifice. This woman is an idiot and completely immature. She shouldn’t be given the responsibility to watch over other human beings. And what does she mean she “meant no disrespect”? What is her definition of disrespect??? Everything about what she did is disrespectful. If she really regretted what she did she should have just said, “Yes what I did was completely disrespectful and I regret doing what I did. I hope everyone I have offended will forgive me and allow me to make recompense for my behavior.” Making excuses though and basically telling everyone that they’re overreacting just makes it worse.
If I was her employer I would fire her. That should be the extent of it though. The employer has every right to fire her as she had every right to do what she did. The employer also has every right to not fire her. That’s the freedoms we enjoy in this country and we should fight to keep it that way even if it means allowing people to be idiots.

Our laws are used against us now. We grow our children in government schools and educate them to not believe in our history but to believe that they can and will drive our country towards a DEMOCRACY designed around Progresivism, to Statism, to Socialism, to Communisim, to Marxism. Really, what do you expect? In the “old days of common sense” she’d wear a sign around her neck at the gate to Arlington telling all what a despicable person she is. But now the laws defend her. Posted on November 20, 2012 at 5:53pmFreedom of expression is what gives her the right to do and say what she did. Some people spit on the idea of patriotism, others live by it. There has to be a balance of tolerance otherwise you devolve into Fascism. Right now in the US there is a war between Right Wing and Left Wing Fascists. It will escalate into a civil war soon if people don’t wake up and depolarize their stands.
However, the most polarizing issue in America today is the Constitution. No one today knows what being a Christian really is all about so they are not able to relate to it. Nowadays all people want is their stuff and more of it. In the past people entered medical professions because of an ideal that drove them to serve mankind. Now they enter them to serve their bellies. Service was what people believed in and humility is what kept their hearts in check. Now there are these charlatans that preach “name it and claim it prosperity” doctrine that is blasphemous and anti-Christ. You can’t understand the Constitution without having Christ in you. You will not be able to see it through the eyes of those who crafted it; you will only see it with eyes that greedy for what they want for themselves. That’s why so many people today think it’s outdated; it doesn’t grant them the right to be lazy do-nothings.

Since the military requires a waiver for anyone that has a felony conviction, there are far fewer than there used to be. They are still allowed to be in Obamao’s civilian defense corps, in fact according to the GIVE act that authorizes the formation of the civilian defense corps, they are the targeted recruits. Since religious individuals are discouraged from joining the civilian defense corps by its anti religious bias, that should tell you something about what they’re wanting to create for use on US soil. Amoral, gang mentality, prone to both violence and criminality. Sounds like just the psychological profile for the people we should be handing fully automatic weapons on US soil. If we keep calling for people’s jobs every time they say or do something we find obnoxious and offensive we push them further to the left where you can bet they will be hollering for our blood louder than the next guy anytime we too express an opinion where the majority does not agree.
I am mostly curious about the context of this: mainly, to the extent she thought this would be viewed only by her friends and not put on display for the world, and if it’s true she has a bunch of similar photos showing her blatantly breaking the rules of various signs as jokes, then perhaps we should lighten up a little and not take this to be the blatant disrespect for our veterans the photo appears to be. She needs to learn to utter a MUCH more humble apology, but we also shouldn’t choke anyone who expresses a bad opinion out of their job. To keep doing that sets a poor precedent of non-stop retaliation back and forth between the political parties which effectively silences the very freedoms of speech these veterans fought for – for ALL of us.

But do we really want to let employers terminate employees for opinions they hold or express in public? Political speech MUST be protected at all cost – otherwise, you’ll find that despots and tyrants are all to willing to destroy your lives if you are critical of the state’s sacred cows.

I agree that she should be fired, but the only person(s) who “branded” this woman is the woman herself. After all, she’s the one who agreed to have her picture taken while engaging in such disrespectful acts toward The Tomb of the Unknowns. This particular area at Arlington is held in even higher esteem than the resting place of President John F. Kennedy.
I don’t thing there’s a stupider person in the United States of America. Hire her? To do what, exactly? She ranks right up there with those dolts who flipped off the portraits of George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan during a visit to the White House last year.
We’re a nation of morons – these two women should be President/Vice President of the National Association of Morons (NAM) and perhaps run for president in 2016. Considering the last election, they might just win.

Reread some of my other responses. The OP said that her picture should be put up publicly to keep her from employment in the future. Yes, that’s branding. Saying “the woman branded herself” is like saying adulteresses placed Scarlet Letters on their own clothing themselves.

Posted on November 21, 2012 at 10:12amThis woman has every right to act like a jerk and take a picture of it. We have the right in this country to say what we want. But we don’t have the right to expect people not to be offended. If she worked for me, I would fire her. Why? Because she acted like a big jerk for the world to see. After the world got to see her idiocy, the company she worked for is suffering the consequences of her actions. While it may seem stupid to others, it is the reality. By her being a jerk and posting it online, it opened the door for all the complaints to her company. That is just how it is. That was HER choice to do. She needs to experience the consequences of her actions. It would be one thing if she just took the photo and didn’t post it online. When she made her actions public, she then brought others into her little “joke” who had nothing to do with it. The reality is, it is offensive to some people. She did it and made it public. So suffer the consequences Ms. Stone. Maybe next time you will think before doing something stupid.

Posted on November 21, 2012 at 1:54amThis woman apparently thought what she was doing was “cool” or she would not have had it posted on FB. And the fact that she states it is one of a series of photos showing her disregard for authority, indicates she might not be the best person to have working with disabled people, trying to help them live independently. So, if her employer decides that they do not think her employment is in their best interests or the best interests of those they had been hired to work with, that is their decision to make. Both the photo and her remarks about the photo indicate she does not seem to have good judgement, which might make her somewhat unqualified to work with disabled people. As to freedom of speech, when what you do, say, or post proudly indicates you are a person of poor character, and you work in a field where people of poor character probably should not work, your employer is surely entitled to add you to Obama’s long list of unemployed.

How do you figure? Freedom of speech protects you from the government, not getting fired by an employer. She wasn’t arrested or harassed by government officials. If she’s a liability to her employer, they are well within their rights to terminate her employment.
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of that speech.

It is NOT simply a monument…it is an ACTUAL grave sight…guarded 24/7/365 by a special detachment of Marines, so that these unidentified and all those unidentified and unfound members of our military will NEVER be alone….in life or in death…
You complete waste of space…seriously…I know you are a pathetic troll with no life who gets off on trying to piss people off…a complete waste of the life God granted you and should quickly revoke…but that is up to Him…but you are lucky as are those women that I or those like me were not present at the time of their picture or your comments to my face…I would gladly arrange the meeting between you and God….

Under this admin and Clinton, it is the former of the two.
Being called to serve this post is a well respected privelege and is subject to strenuous background and clearance checks. What little the military actually gets for monuments or parks dedicated to it is truly small as most others are from retired equipment. Would you then take away the Vietnam memorial and the Pearl Harbor one as well? I believe if you were trying to cut pork we would replace the overpaid government employees with all military details since military is the least paid of all government jobs.
Pork you have no clue what respect is and your existence justifies, as does this woman’s, the thinking that every able bodied person should be forced to pay tax in the form of service to your country in the form of basic training to educate you two in the school of discipline. Then again we veterans and active service would never trust either with an M4 much less a hand grenade.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:44pmI disagree with your statement that she shouldn’t be fired for this. If her actions outside of the workplace create a conflict within the workplace (as hers obviously have), I would say the company is well within their rights to fire her. Her behavior has an impact upon their business practice, and no company should be forced to keep an employee like that around.
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 4:58pmActually, many companies and places of business DO retain the right to fire their employees based upon things posted on social networking sites. People have been fired from their jobs because of photos of them with friends that “might send the wrong message” if viewed by people who could possibly associate that with the business. I have a family member who recently had to go through their photos online in preparation for entering a teaching program- can’t run the risk of not being hired or being rejected because someone doesn’t like what they see. She was there apparently with her business and as such was representing them. This is not only a vulgar and disrespectful display of gross immaturity, it is not any behavior that reflects well upon LIFE. She should be relieved of the burden of her job and not considered re-hireable.

How is running your mouth /not/ freedom of speech? Or is it only freedom of speech if it is respectful of people and places that you deem appropriate? Same thing with “Hate Speech” laws. You might have missed her intent in that she was mocking different signs, like pretending to smoke in front of a no smoking sign, or standing on the grass in front of a “keep off the grass” sign. This is a perfect lesson about the society we have decided we should live in. Be very mindful of what you say, when you say it, and who might be around. Never say anything that can identify you or make any humor outside of people you know very very well.

What would seem appropriate is an un-paid leave of absence requiring

our service men and women. Let her travel at her own expense the
breadth of this Nation so that she might bear witness to the grief of
mothers, fathers, wives, husbands and children whose tears are shed as
a sacrifice so that Ms. Stone can make her “jokes”. After that and
perhaps 1000 volunteer hours attending to the needs of children whose
parents can only be found in these gardens of stone, perhaps Lindsey
will be more fully capable of fulfilling LIFE’s charter, to “encourage
