Should This Woman Lose Her Job for Flipping Off the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (And Then Posting a Pic of It)?

Two women have been placed on unpaid leave and could lose their jobs after a photo they took near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery went viral on the Internet.
In the picture Lindsey Stone is seen either yelling or pretending to yell, while giving the middle finger near a sign that asks for “silence and respect.” Her co-worker reportedly took the photo.
According to CBS Boston the image sparked thousands of comments, and while Stone has since deleted the photo and her relevant tweets, she wrote this in response to the initial fury:

Stone works at a non-profit organization usually referred to as “LIFE,” short for “Living Independently Forever,” that helps adults with disabilities in the Cape Cod area.
Within the past 24 hours there appears to have been a huge resurgence in interest in Stone’s photo, and a Facebook page called “Fire Lindsey Stone” has gotten more than 5,000 “likes.”
Hundreds of angry commenters have also posted on LIFE’s Facebook page, asking why they are continuing to employ such disrespectful individuals.
LIFE responded today on their Facebook page:

Reactions are mixed.
One woman commented on LIFE’s page that she doubts Stone and her friend truly “meant no disrespect” in flipping off the Tomb of the Unknowns. Since they appear to have no courtesy for the grief of those who have lost a loved one in the armed forces, she continued, perhaps they need to be taught a far less painful lesson, but a lesson nonetheless.
“I respectfully request you allow them to experience the grief of sudden unemployment,” she wrote, before complimenting the photos of the facility.
Another commenter said they don’t want their disabled family member in the care of people who could flaunt such a horrible lack of judgement.
Still others, though, are saying that the commenters are “overreacting,” and Gawker asks whether Stone should really have her “life ruined” because of a “stupid photo.”
What do you think?

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:49pmI’m not saying that I agree with firing the woman but….If a person can being fored for saying messed up stuff about Obama than they could be fired for this. Why not? These people actually sacrificed for their country. The left has recently asserted directly and indirectly that there are limits to what you can say about damn near everything. You can’t criticize Islam. You can’t talk **** about Obama. Speech codes anyone? They spent most of a decade on college campuses stifling free speech. Let’s not forget Chik-fil-a.
Now it’s bitten one of their own on the ass. I’m not condoning it. I’m calling it a teachable moment.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 11:00pmExcellent (but an unrelated) point and heres why…she did this on company time. The company can fire her for showing very poor judgment on thier dime. Lots of people are fired for much less…like constantly arriving late or leaving early, taking days off without calling in ahead of time etc…

Posted on November 21, 2012 at 4:45amI agree navykurt. Thank God today’s technology wasn’t around when I did my stupid stuff……….
Blaze people, haven’t you all at one time or another did something stupid? Would you want your life scrutinized to the point of losing your livelyhood? She’s young and dumb for behaving this way, and I agree that she now must realize the mistake she has made and hopefully has learned from it.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:48pmI’m torn. Seeing as they are at the Arlington National Cemetary, yes their actions are disrespectful in general. However, I do not believe she was directing her disrespect towards the fallen soldiers or meant to show any ill will towards their families. I think if the sign “Silence and Respect” were posted in a library, they’d take the photo there as well. It’s them trying to be witty and ironic…as was with her smoking next to the no smoking sign. Do I think she should lose her job over something on her personal page, not related to her employer…no I honestly don’t. Do I think she should be reprimanded for poor judgement given her location of the photo…yes. Do I think this much attention should be paid to her by so many…hell no. Move on from her poor attempt at wit…she’s not worth the energy.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 4:07pmShe was on a company trip which relates to her employer. She probably didn’t mean any disrespect ,but that’s what she got. She should be fired ,but that’s where it should end. If the company wants to keep her on? Cool, bad PR for the company ,it’s on them.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:47pmEven though it angers me somewhat, it is freedom of speech so just ignore it. People on the left don’t like it when we show disrespect for Obama too. God bless America.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:46pmI do not think this idiot should be fired for expressing her true thoughts about the vets, especially those at Arlington. This is her constitutional right. However, it is also my right and all that agree with me not to use her companies services, and more specifically not to do business with this woman in any capacity. Make her totally ineffective within her company and then they can fire her for poor performance, which will follow her to future job searches.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:45pmIt is nothing I would ever consider doing, but to my knowledge she broke no law and for the time being it is a free country. I have served my country and look at this like I fought for the right she had to do this. Her employer now has a PR problem to deal with as a separate issue which may cost her, her job. That should be up to the employer based on the general knowledge of her character and prior performance not to be influenced by the masses of people who were offended by this photo. Lets not be the people who go for the death penalty because someone made a cartoon character of Mohamed.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:43pmIf she was disruptive at the Tomb of theUnknowns then should should have been asked to leave or escorted out. As long as we have free will we can act like idiots, as long as soldiers are willing to sacrifice for our rights we still have free speech. I find the trend by businesses to follow private comments on the Internet as disturbing as this woman’s childish actions.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:43pmFreedom of speech doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences. Just as she is free to say what she wants the company is also free to hire and fire anyone they want to represent their business. It’s called a social conscience, manners, respect, integrity. That’s like people telling us not to “judge” but if we don’t judge our judgment goes out the window!

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:41pmThough I find her poor thought process reprehensible, I don’t believe that she should lose her job over it. I think a better solution would be to have her and her friend/co-worker “walk the beat” with the guards at the tomb for two days straight so that she can gain perspective. She should be glad that she didn’t do this at a mosque…it might have been fatal….

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:39pmWelcome to Obamas New America, and it’s young representatives ! I’m glad, both my Dad and my Uncle Joe have passed. Those two men served their country well, my dad, in ww2, wounded in a small town in France only to be sent to a hospital and patched up enough to get shipped to Germany, where he was once again shot, but he came home. My uncle Joe was shot , but survived Korea, thank God. This public humiliation will foreever be this young idiots “SCARLET LETTER ! I bet you she’ll learn and understand what that tomb means now.

I believe this is an action to the instruction on the sign… not the location…. Poor judgement YES…. should we be reacting to her poor judgement in this way… NO.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:33pmThese two are the epitome of what is lacking in the young people of America, the young who voted for a communist to continue on his merry journey to destroy the youth, the ideals of America, and the Constitution. These two are the epitome of unpatriot Americans who have not been taught what makes America great, nor why America’s best go to war for their right to flip off anyone they desire. This country has earned a ****-whipping from the Almighty for our lack of understanding and ignorance.
I say fire ‘em. They can get in line at the unemployment office while talking on their obama phones, and then head to collect their food stamps. Nevertheless, they will not learn anything except how they can live off other people’s money.

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 3:33pmI’ve been to that site a dozen or more times. While I’ve never seen someone do something so blatant as this, I have seen LOTS of talking, gum smacking, giggling, pointing, listening to iPods and generally disrespectful behavior. Ironically, the foreigners that visit the site are more respectful than the Americans.
This country has lost its way and its soul.
