Should This Woman Lose Her Job for Flipping Off the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (And Then Posting a Pic of It)?

Two women have been placed on unpaid leave and could lose their jobs after a photo they took near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery went viral on the Internet.
In the picture Lindsey Stone is seen either yelling or pretending to yell, while giving the middle finger near a sign that asks for “silence and respect.” Her co-worker reportedly took the photo.
According to CBS Boston the image sparked thousands of comments, and while Stone has since deleted the photo and her relevant tweets, she wrote this in response to the initial fury:

Stone works at a non-profit organization usually referred to as “LIFE,” short for “Living Independently Forever,” that helps adults with disabilities in the Cape Cod area.
Within the past 24 hours there appears to have been a huge resurgence in interest in Stone’s photo, and a Facebook page called “Fire Lindsey Stone” has gotten more than 5,000 “likes.”
Hundreds of angry commenters have also posted on LIFE’s Facebook page, asking why they are continuing to employ such disrespectful individuals.
LIFE responded today on their Facebook page:

Reactions are mixed.
One woman commented on LIFE’s page that she doubts Stone and her friend truly “meant no disrespect” in flipping off the Tomb of the Unknowns. Since they appear to have no courtesy for the grief of those who have lost a loved one in the armed forces, she continued, perhaps they need to be taught a far less painful lesson, but a lesson nonetheless.
“I respectfully request you allow them to experience the grief of sudden unemployment,” she wrote, before complimenting the photos of the facility.
Another commenter said they don’t want their disabled family member in the care of people who could flaunt such a horrible lack of judgement.
Still others, though, are saying that the commenters are “overreacting,” and Gawker asks whether Stone should really have her “life ruined” because of a “stupid photo.”
What do you think?

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 10:43amI heard what Glen Beck had to say on this matter and it is very had for me to believe that he said what he truly believes, I think he is kind of selling out much in the ame way he acuses others of doing. First I try to put myself in the shoes of these soldiers family, and then I say you disrespect my family in this way, I would fire your ass qucker than a NY minute. This person”s a sorry excuse for a humanbeing muchless an Amercan. So, quit pretending Glenn, you know and we know that if the soldier was your Mother, Father, Brother, Sister, Son or Daughter you would fire this women. I’m so fricken tired of all this mansy pansy BULL CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! She doesn’t deserve to live under the freedom these soldiers gave the altimate sacrafice to afford to her. She is nothing more than something I have to scrape off the bottom of my shoe after I step in it.

The “Freedom of Speech” amendment was put in place to protect unpopular speech. The woman has the right to express herself, and she should be able to do so without worrying that she could get fired from her job for something she did on her own time.
My God! If we are going to become Big Brother over Facebook posts, I am going to delete my Facebook page!

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 8:53amThis woman needs to find out the hard way that actions have consequences and she needs to GO! And every time she applies for a job, this should be shown to the employer.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 9:40amSounds like you support the Gestapo! Don’t you support freedom of speech for all. Or does that little amendment just applicable in cases in which you approve?

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 8:38amOkay – For me, personally I think she is a despicable human being, I lost my son who was in the Army, so this is a direct insult on my son. As for her losing her job, I know that If I were to in any way embarrass, or cast a negative image on my employers, they have every right to fire me.
I feel she has done nothing to make her employers proud of her, and they should thin the “dead wood” before it corrupts anyone else.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 2:00amI am one who believes, for the most part, that one’s behavior “on the field and off” are two separate things and should be treated accordingly. I think a couple of observations should be made, though. First, it is by no means “obvious” that Lindsey did not intend a lack of respect toward veterans. Second, young people in general nowadays seem to have some questionable need to draw attention to themselves, no matter how stupid they may look in doing so. In the photo, she is clearly attempting to show what she believes is her clever sense of humor by yelling and showing disrespect next to a sign which commands the opposite. Smoking a cigarette where prohibited is one thing; flipping off the Tomb of the Unknowns is another entirely, IMHO. Her cute little stunt (and its publication) shows an astonishing lack of judgment which may seep over into her job. If it does, then she should be fired. I don’t hold out much hope of that because she works in Massachusetts. One thing Lindsey said is right on the money, though: she and her friend ARE douchebags.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 2:00amAnd this is funny how? Is this the result of having a society where some people don’t have a moral compass? I think she needs to lose her job and maybe it will teach her a lesson.
This reminds me of the time I was in D.C. visiting the Roosevelt Memorial. Well some dingbat started to make fun of the sculpture depicting a soup line during the Great Depression. She was posing and having her friends take pictures they were getting big laughs off of someone else’s hardship.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 2:08amI was at the same memorial back in 1999 and saw something really funny. One of the statues at the memorial is of FDR’s beloved terrier, Fala (the statue is much bigger than lifesize). One of the tourists was walking through the memorial with his little dog when the dog began to bark at the statue of Fala and wouldn’t stop !! My wife and I, along with the others there, had a good laugh at the sight. No one meant any disrespect, of course. We took a pic of it, but God knows where it is. Just thought I’d share this because sometimes the commentary on The Blaze can be pretty serious and some levity might be appreciated.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 12:46amthis woman obviously has a shallow mind and no clue that freedom comes with responsibility. that said, she also has the same right to freedom of expression as we do, like it or not. it has angered me no end because my son is a veteran but if we say she should be punished for doing so then we are going down a very dangerous path. may God grant her understanding because she is obviously in desperate need of it.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 8:24amHey Elderbat, the liberals won’t EVER cut the conservatives any slack, so why give in to the morons of the world. Demand that both of them be fired and if they aren’t then a donation boycott of the org. that they work for should be forthcoming.
Sympathy is a losers downfall and that’s why we on the right are always losing. It’s time to start fighting back, with a vengeance.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 9:44amI agree Elderbat. If we want to punish her expressing her freedom of speech (regardless of whether or not we agree with her), “we are going down a very dangerous path” indeed.
