Two women have been placed on unpaid leave and could lose their jobs after a photo they took near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery went viral on the Internet.

In the picture Lindsey Stone is seen either yelling or pretending to yell, while giving the middle finger near a sign that asks for “silence and respect.” Her co-worker reportedly took the photo.

According to CBS Boston the image sparked thousands of comments, and while Stone has since deleted the photo and her relevant tweets, she wrote this in response to the initial fury:

Stone works at a non-profit organization usually referred to as “LIFE,” short for “Living Independently Forever,” that helps adults with disabilities in the Cape Cod area.

Within the past 24 hours there appears to have been a huge resurgence in interest in Stone’s photo, and a Facebook page called “Fire Lindsey Stone” has gotten more than 5,000 “likes.”

Hundreds of angry commenters have also posted on LIFE’s Facebook page, asking why they are continuing to employ such disrespectful individuals.

Reactions are mixed.

One woman commented on LIFE’s page that she doubts Stone and her friend truly “meant no disrespect” in flipping off the Tomb of the Unknowns. Since they appear to have no courtesy for the grief of those who have lost a loved one in the armed forces, she continued, perhaps they need to be taught a far less painful lesson, but a lesson nonetheless.

“I respectfully request you allow them to experience the grief of sudden unemployment,” she wrote, before complimenting the photos of the facility.

Another commenter said they don’t want their disabled family member in the care of people who could flaunt such a horrible lack of judgement.

Still others, though, are saying that the commenters are “overreacting,” and Gawker asks whether Stone should really have her “life ruined” because of a “stupid photo.”

I am a veteran (no duh huh), although I don’t agree with idiots choices like these two. I disagree more with employers using facebook postings to disapline employees, this is NOT russia and employers should mind their own freaking business. I also think this is what you get for acting like a preteen and posting every single thought online for the world to see. GROW THE F$#@ UP, like my 6th grade teacher told me, a fools name and a fools face are always seen in a public place (told this after spray painting my initials on side of school.
you want people to pay attention to you? post your life online, you may get more attention than you bargined for in your pre-teen 30′s-40′s. after all, obama picked up a marine for a posting so even the corrupt obama administration watches.

  The real problem is Facebook/whatever online crap people use now aren’t private ,but ultimately all “Public”. The company probably started getting emails and calls from people pissed off at seeing this on what turned out to be a company trip. Company can’t turn a blind eye when your “private” stupidity starts to effect the company.

Some, including that great American in The Tomb, even died for you. With freedom comes some responsibility. If you worked for me, I would suddenly realize that I had an employee that was immature, shallow, disrespectful, irresponsible and crude; so why would I pay you to be a representative of my company / organization ? GROW UP and good luck finding another job in this Obama Economy. You remind me of your President – you say one thing and do EXACTLY the opposite.

No Miss Stone, you did mean all kinds of disrespect to those brave men and women who gave all for you and your friend to be beyond classless, banal, and utterly worthless fools. If you think showing them disrespect somehow congratulates the ultimate sacrifice they made for your freedom to be a waste of oxygen, you should truly get psychiatric help immediately. I hope this picture goes viral and every friend you ever had turns away from you so that you get a chance to reflect on your obvious mental defect.

Quite frankly, they were probably just screwing around. They’re liberals I’m sure or they would otherwise have chosen a different location for their “outburst”. Like if I was going to do something like that I’d be more inclined to eat a pork sandwich in front of a Mosque or something, but since they’re liberals they need to express themselves by showing disrespect for the military. I on the other hand would have chosen to show disrespect for an evil political cult bent on murder and destruction. See the difference?

It is not for us to decide. If the company she works for wants to be known as the company that employs people that flip off dead veterans, that’s their choice. It’s just like the Dixie Chicks. They are totally free to express their views and we are totally free not to buy their albums or support their labels.

If you read the Facebook post from LIFE it clearly states she was visiting DC with residents and 8 other employees. Seems like she was on an official LIFE trip to me. So no, she wasn’t on her own time. She WAS representing the company. Therefore, she should be fired. It’s funny, when I visited Arlington National Cemetery, I stopped, specifically pointed out this exact sign to my children, and explained why we need to show respect and observe silence. Some things seem really funny when you are doing them, but then later, once you have time to think about it, aren’t so funny after all. That’s just part of growing up I guess. Maybe she needs to grow up.

With great freedom comes an equal amount of responsibility. This is revealed by the Founders in the Federalist Papers. When responsibilities are neglected or overlooked, freedom will always suffer, both individual freedom and the freedom of others. This woman, albeit later in life, needs to learn this vital lesson, lest she pass it onto her offspring.

In other words… Fire her Stinking @ss !!!
