‘F** Pimp,’ ‘Filthy Pervert!’: Westboro Clashes With Gay Men on Set of Russell Brand’s TV Show

Russell Brand is known for many things. Actor. Comedian. Talk show host. Husband (for a brief time) to singer Katy Perry. The list goes on. Recently, the entertainer invited two controversial individuals to appear on his FX show, “Brand X” — Westboro Baptist Church’s Steve Drain and Tim Phelps (founder Fred Phelps’ son).

Donning a shirt that read, “PriestsRapeBoys.com,” Drain launched right into Brand, calling him “an advocate for sin.” Phelps, too, had little positive to say about the host.

The two Westboro members brought with them one of the infamous posters (they frequently use offensive, anti-gay messaging at protests). The sign featured an image of brand with flames behind him and the words, “F** Pimp Brand.”

“You make your living making a mockery of sin,” Phelps told Brand, going on to speak directly to the audience. ”In fact, since you promote sin, you hate all these kind people in your heart. That’s why he applauds your sins — because he hates you all.”

Brand attempted to defend himself, while also listening intently. It didn’t take long for the Westboro congregants to issue their famous line: “God hates f**s.” When the audience reacted and some spoke out against the men, Brand quipped, ”One at a time. You will all get a chance to speak — in hell!”

The situation became particularly intense when Brand brought three gay men onto the stage. Drain and Phelps quickly clashed with them, with the latter yelling, “You’re a filthy pervert!” One of the men attempted to explain that, despite his sexuality, he is a Christian.

In the end, Brand attempted to debunk the men’s tactics, claiming that Jesus’ message wasn’t one of hate; instead, he dubbed it one of ”tolerance and love and truth and beauty and acceptance.”

    There are alot of people here stating what God wants or does not want..a couple of things come to mind. 1. How do you know what the true motive of God is?? 2. There is alot of stone tossing. History is plain….what happens to a society that embraces homosexuality…are they successful?

      He wrote a best-selling book telling us. Nothing in that book matches what these WBC clowns say.

      Jesus said “I have done nothing in secret”. I don’t believe God’s general will for us is a mystery. Jesus summed it up to the rich man.

      1. Love the Lord you God will all your heart, strength and mind.

      2. The second is likened unto the first, Love your neighbor as thyself.

      All the rest is details that are between you and God.

      @ squidvetohio My point is this.. allthough the Bible in (my view) should be taken literaly.we. as not perfect, sinners need to take heed in the fact that we are not to liken ourselves to God/Christ…when we quote scripture to push or combat an agenda we risk insult to the word of God…there are many ways to skin a cat…so I repeat what does happen to a society that embraces homosexuality…do they flourish or fail?

    Hate the sin but love the sinner. I work with a few guys and girls that are gay. They know my beliefs and started to be confrontational, telling me how I should act toward them. I didn’t bite, in stead I have been able to show then I’m a Christian through my actions and deeds. We’ve had some good conversations. This opens them up to being saved. I’m tilling the soil so to say. Have I got anyone to church? No, it could be for someone who comes after me.
    These WBC clowns are running a scam, they play both angles. They did bring people together through Patriot Guard, and others. So they may be here to unite us, who knows?

      These WBC guys are about as christian as the FEMEN lesbians protesting naked in France. You can be firm against sin without being outright hateful. Look at Jesus’ handling of Mary (the harlot). He was kind, forgiving and compassionate but after He saved her life He told her “Go and sin no more”.

      “Judgement begins at the house of God.” These guys are in for a big surprise.

    In the Bible, homosexuality is referred to as an abomination. And, homosexuals will “suffer in their bodies the recompense for their deeds”. AIDS may not be so new.

      Not only gays have AIDS, I hope you realize. And in fact, lesbians are the demographic with the lowest HIV rates worldwide. Saying AIDS is a punishment for being gay is like saying sickle-cell anemia is a punishment for being black or Tay-Sachs is a Jewish punishment.

      I had a friend who got HIV from a blood transfusion in the 1980s, and suffered the shame as everyone assumed he was gay ever since (unfortunately he died in the 1990s). Hard to believe it’s been almost 30 years since then and some people still think AIDS is a “gay disease” or some plague from God to kill only sodomites. Some folks just have anger in their hearts, I suppose.

      I find it funny when I here we live by the new covenant until it comes to gays then christians quote the old testament, jesus never said anything about homosexuals, aids a gay curse, that is just as dumb as imams saying earthquakes are caused by allah as punishment. These westies are morons.

      1. There were no cell phones when Reagan was President.
      2. Regardless of WHEN the program started, this woman THINKS Obama gave her the phone and that’s why she voted for him.

      Steve, the program was greatly expande din 1996 under Clinton. In 2008 we spend 819 billion on these free phones. In 2010 we went up to 1 billion. I don’t know what it is now.

      That’s… er, many things. Almost all of them relating somehow to insulting your intelligence or questioning your mental state. I don’t believe gay marriage is biblical, but I also don’t think that the slippery slope goes “Gays get married –> Gays get exterminated.”

      What is interesting in the annals of history is that if you study social trends often political parties use different issues to further their agendas. what if Sharia Law does get its way in America? It does spell death for gays if implemented. What if Communism does take hold?Historically everyone is a target of the State. So, in your round about way you have spoken factually about what we already know. Government uses issues and everyone can be a target to further that agenda.     Accept for the harsh name calling, it seems that most of what the two WBC guys said was biblical. They seemed much more tame than Phelps’s daughter who is usually angry and combative. I think these two guys did a pretty good job, considering the platform they were invited to.

Fred Phelps, the patriarch of the family has five times been a candidate for political office (including Governer) in Kansas Democratic Party primaries. Fred Phelps Jr., hosted a Gore fundraiser at his home in Topeka and was a Gore delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention.

      I have no idea what the Phelps are. I meant the conservatives on here. They hate WBC for protesting at military funerals and call them crazy. But here they line up with conservative thinking.       No true conservative would ever think of protesting a funeral regardless of who the funeral was for. Also, no true believer in the Bible would rejoice over the idea of anybody being eternally condemned.

      I get the feeling that you could never accept the idea that there could possibly be something greater than yourself.

      I personally believe that anybody who has the ability to think clearly would come to the conclusion that an intelligent first cause (As described in the Bible) created all things. I don’t believe that anybody would be condemned to burn alive in unimaginable torment for eternity as punishment for a hundred years of sin and I don’t believe the Bible implies any such notion.

      Actually Willie, you have it completely backwards. I see the right-wing conservative as the one who sees nothing bigger then himself. Hence their “I built this without the help of anything or anybody” attitude and their resistance to helping the less prosperous. I am not rich and I am not a churchgoer. But I help others the best that I can and I try to do the right thing most of the time, even though I fail often. I do this not because my invisible creator is watching me from above and will condemn me if I cross him. I do it because I see myself as part of a larger society that I am only a small part of. But I have to work to try to improve that society in the small ways that I can. I treat others with kindness and respect and help when I can. I see us all as part of this society and why I treat others as equal, no matter how different their lifestyle choices may be from mine.

      @JeanR You see yourself as a small part of a whole? That is collectivism. That thinking leads to accepting communism. If you don’t believe in a creator, then why should you have any rights at all according to our country’s founding principal laid out in the Declaration of Independence:

      We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

      If you don’t believe in a creator, then your rights come from man and with the belief that you are just part of a whole, you open yourself to slavery. The reason our founding fathers believed in INDIVIDUAL rights is because if you are not self-reliant then you must rely on others to take care of you. Conservatives know this l i b t a r d s can’t seem to grasp this. Unfortunately it appears that the country has been brainwashed by the commies and we conservatives now find ourselves out numbered. It is so hard for me to accept that Americans have been so dumbed down that they forgotten why our country is different from all others and worse, have been so blinded by evil that they can’t even apply simple common sense.       And of course I am not self-reliant. I depended on my family to raise and take care of me until adulthood. I depend on farmers to make my food, the military to protect me from foreign enemies, NASA to create the technology I enjoy, teachers to educate my children, public roads to allow me to travel, regulators that protect my consumer and worker rights, and so forth. And I try to help others where I can. Of course I take precautions to protect and prepare my family in the event of emergency or catastrophe, but to believe one is “self-reliant” is to display a stunning amount of ego and lack of intellect.

    if this does not confuse you of who god is, i don’t know what will.. Look God does love every one regardless of what gender you find attractive. god wants what makes us happy not sad.

    lol to tell some one they are going to hell for loving is a double standard that i am 100% god does not stand for.
    For me i know whats in my heart.i know god loves me for who i am, what i stand for end of story. If a man loves another man and a woman loves another woman how is that not love?
    People need to wake up and see just how much hate they are throwing at the expanse of some one else to try to help make them self comfortable, and that is not what god is for or about.

    by the way did you see who god was working through in this and who the devil was working though?

      you need to be careful, God does love you, however should you “love” another man, God does not accept your sin, God does not love you sin, God hates your sin

      what God does do is continue to love you, and I’ve stated that westboro people are in stark contrast to God in this, however God loving you does not mean he accepts your sin or wants you to be happy in your sin

      Not Biblical – that would say God blesses rape, after all, it makes a rapist happy when he rapes. How about the heroin dealer selling dope to your 15 year old child? It makes the dealer happy to make money from the destruction of your child. And let us not forget the child molester, who is happiest molesting and raping a 4 year old! The Bible tells us homosexuality is a sin. Period. No way around it.

      I’m firmly in the camp of “gay marriage is in no way biblical,” but a lot of the statements here are insane. We’ve just had two consenting adults marrying each other compared to rape, pedophilia, drug addiction, and murder.

      One of these things is not like the other, and the difference is “consenting adults.” You could also argue that gays marrying don’t harm anyone (which is true), whereas all these other examples explicitly harm one of the parties involved.

      Come on guys, God gave us brains. Use them and stop making these idiotic comparisons.

      God wants what? I really would like to know where this is in the bible. Because if it’s in there, then why as a Christian should I bother to do anything unless it makes me happy. In the bible we are urged to do and be many things as Christians and one thing I don’t remember being mentioned is to make sure I’m happy because that’s what God wants.

      Were the sodomites in Sodom and Gormorrah happy with what they were doing? In your mind if they were then God wanted them continuing in their perverted lifestyles. I guess it was a mistake when He basically nuked them. Was David happy when he killed Uriah so he could have Bathsheba for himself? In your mind if he was then God wanted that for David. Yep, killing someone to get their wife is just fine in your book, as long as it makes him happy. Twisted theology.

      Haven’t you ever been taught about logic? C’mon, you didn’t have any classes in school about it? How about debating. You never learned how to debate? Can you make a reasoned argument?

      We were taking the argument of “God wants us to be happy” and carrying that thought out to the logical extreme. We are not actually comparing men marrying each other to murder. Like it’s the same as murder in society’s eyes. WE are saying that both are sins and God does not like sin. Period. I don’t care if it’s murder or gossip. It’s sin and like I said, He doesn’t like sin.

      Have you? The situations are nowhere near logical equivalents. If you wanted a logically equivalent sin, why not mention adultery? It still involves two consenting adults, but is unbiblical. No one (at least in that pair) gets hurt or takes advantage of the other person. Sure, the example fails a little bit as there is at least a third party (if not a fourth, assuming both adulterers are married), but it’s closer than saying “Gay marriage is like giving a 15 year old drugs and getting her addicted to them.”

      Here’s an even better one. Actually, probably one of the best. Remarriage after a divorce. Blanket ban on it, as per Jesus’s own words in the Bible. Yet society as a whole is largely ok with it. Many churches (non-Catholic) allow it. But it is undeniably a sin. Jesus never spoke about gay marriage, but He certainly spoke about the sin of remarriage following a divorce. (Thinking about it, even divorce would be a closer equivalent than adultery, because divorce is also forbidden except in the case of infidelity).

      Yet instead we see gay marriage compared to murder, rape, and pedophilia, when they are all vastly inferior comparisons when using logic. Why not remarriage? Could it be because 50% of Americans get divorced at least once, and most of them remarry at some point?

      Some food for thought :-)

      did you read what you responded to? that is what he said….. the point is they are all sin, and the comment that started everything was “God just wants us to be happy”, we were pointing out how ill informed and dangerous of a comment it was, because while God does want us to be happy, God hates sin, and according to the bible, sin is sin, and all sins all equal except for the 1 unpardonable sin of not accepting God.
      so biblical speaking murder, being gay, rape, white lie….. same thing

      so back to the “logic” comments, you lose

      Every sin is NOT equivalent. The bible specifically states this, and other denominations have their own terms (see the idea of “mortal” versus “venal” sin in Catholicism, for example).

      By your reasoning, if you tell a lie you are killing someone. There’s no logic in that. See, when I asked if Deeber understood logic it’s because there are degrees of validity to logic when it comes to examples. Saying that lying is like murder, for example, is less logical than saying lying is like gossiping. Why? Because gossip and lying does not necessarily mean you’re harming another; because they have to do with words, not physical harm; because murder precludes all chance of redemption for the other party.

      Can you see why it’s not a good, logical comparison?

      If you can’t… well, I suggest doing as Deeber suggests, and taking classes in logic and debate :-)

    Jesus accepted sinners but never the sin, and its clear that Jesus called people on their sin, told them to repent and not sin anymore…..

    i do not like the westboro people, but i do like that they do not accept sin, CLEARLY they need to work on loving the sinner which is what Jesus did.

    Look at examples from the Bible, Jesus met the woman at the well, pretty much told her she was a who’re and that she needs to not do it anymore, but he was nice to her, treated her as a person, while at the same time being direct about the sin…… westboro doesnt seem too good at the treating people like people thing…….

      One big difference, between the woman at the well and modern day people: HE was Jesus, and you’re not. He knew the woman’s sins without her telling Him. Even still, Jesus often met with prostitutes, tax collectors (who were pretty unscrupulous) and even Pharisees (religious leaders who he reserved his harshest rebukes for). The Bible doesn’t detail him rebuking each of them, so it stands to reason he probably didn’t on every occasion.

      Instead, look at how Paul treated the people of Athens (Acts 17:22-31) who worshiped idols and even had an idol dedicated to “an unknown god.” He was kind and understanding, he even complemented them on being very religious. While Christians should stand against sin, especially in the church, we should stand against sin in our own lives and remember the greatest commandment is to love God and the second is to love our neighbor, not judge and condemn them.
