Here’s the New Electric Car Chrysler Expects to Lose Money on (And Here’s Why They’re Making it)

Chrysler Expects to Lose Between $8K $9K on the Battery Powered Fiat 500e

The Fiat 500e (Courtesy PR Newswire)

Chrysler will soon introduce the world to its very first battery-powered vehicle, the Fiat 500e.

However, far more interesting than the fact that it’s their first battery-powered car is the fact that Chrysler expects to lose between $8,000 and $9,000 for each one it sells, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Why would they produce a car that’s sure to lose money? One word: California.

Let us explain.

California has one of the largest car markets in the country (it accounts for nearly 10 percent of all U.S. auto sales). California also has a strict zero-emission requirement.

So unless Chrysler offers a model that meets these increasingly stringent emissions standards, California could bar them from selling cars in the state.

Pretty great, right?

But wait! There’s more! Ten other states, including New York, New Jersey, and Maryland, have followed California’s lead and have enacted similar zero-emission requirements. And much like California, Chrysler could be barred from selling cars in these states unless it offers a vehicle that meets these standards.

Problem is, nobody seems to want zero-emission vehicles.

California “can make us sell a minimum amount of cars, but unfortunately, they can’t make people buy them, or even get our own dealers to order them from us,” Kevin Kinnaw, Toyota’s U.S. manager of regulatory affairs, told the Wall Street Journal.

In short, in order to stay compliant with these various carbon emission laws, automakers must design and produce cars that no one will buy.

β€œSo far this year, only about 26,000 electric vehicles have been sold in the entire U.S., a tiny fraction of the 11.9 million cars and light trucks Americans have purchased,” the Journal report notes.

β€œAbout one in four electric vehicles sold are in California,” the report adds.

Fiat will only lose 8 to $9,000 per car – this is super since the article I read in Autoweek stated GM was loseing $40,000 per car. I wonder if Fiat will have an app for your phone telling you when it catches on fire.

The price of all the cars we actually want just went up. ” You can buy a gasoline powered car, if you want, but it will bankrupt you” – Obama.

Chrysler is either going to make LESS of a profit, which they give to other people in the form of salaries, benefits, or dividends – OR – they are going to make the same amount of money by charging more for other things – OR – they are going to reduce expense so they make the same profit. Items that could be considered expenses are as follows: salaries for the lowest seniority, health benefits, vacation time for the lower seniority people, total number of lower seniority personnel, holiday pay for lower seniority people, etc etc etc. They can’t be this stupid? Can they? what is the common theme, lower seniority gets to pay more and make less. Let’s call it the “lose money on something no one wants” tax.

@WaterTheTree” Don’t kowtow to these idiot states, let them have NO cars, let them ride bikes.”

      “THAT” is what “THEY” want.

“THEY” are the environmental zealots who have ruined California’s economy and caused 1,000′s of businesses to leave the state. They do not care about the economy…Period! Environmentalism is God to these nut-jobs.
Almost all of the California desert has been closed to off-road vehicles. This has systematically been accomplished over the last 40-50 years by abusing the endangered species act. The closure causes 1000′s of jobs to be lost in the off-road industry.
Now we see the insanity of car makers attempting to appease the left-wing radicals again by “LOSING MONEY” on the manufacture of automobiles.
Somewhere, some place, some company has to call their bluff and refuse to bend to the idiocy of the left. Eventually, the radical left will have to answer when no one has a job.

When I worked at a motorcycle dealer, the dealer mark-up was 18%., and the manufacturer made money, too.
Just price it at 30% above actual cost. If every manufacturer did that, you ‘may’ see some of those ridiculous regulations go away. California has had the most-strict regs as long as I can remember.

The motorized tin cans that Fiat exported to the US in the past deserved the “Fix It Again, Tony” reputation, but they produced some excellent products for the European market. From the reports I’ve seen, the Fiat 500 is a reliable urban vehicle, but, because of Fiat’s past performance in the US market, I’d have qualms about taking it on a cross-country trip. The 500e appears to be to the 500 what the Volt is to the Cruz — an over-priced, under-performing and life-threatening piece of PC crap.

It’s a sad time for the industry when the government forces it to produce Edsels.

To the best of my knowledge, the first and only successful civilian automobile specifically designed to meet government guidelines was the VW beetle.

      Hi Tractorboy,

Actually, Hitler “sold” the Volts (peoples) Wagon (car) a bit different than most people know. The workers in the Voltswagon factory were to receive a car for payment of services (working). No one knew which car they were to receive so every worker did their best to build the best car not knowing if they would be paid with the car that they were building.

Just a small fact I thought some people might enjoy.

Very cool to be in a bi-plane.

If you want to see the P51′s I’m use to go here:

The Monk is my student. While he is not my best student he is among the top 10. I happened to see his post to you and decided to reply. He has issues with doing a Lomcevak but he has mastered a roll out over the top. I wish he would come back and stop flying that damn Stearman but it is more expensive for the P51TF lessons.I hear he is unemployed and that might be the issue.

As my old teacher, Cocky Dundash use to say…. “Maintain thy airspeed least the ground arise and smite thee. So says Silas; The Sagacious Sage from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.”

The Bi-plane has a very distinct sound, they have a air show up here in central NY, I can always tell when that thing is flying by……can also tell when the pair of C-130s from the Niagara falls air force base are on maneuvers, and they are 300ft of the deck. they go right over our house, it gets your attention to say the least, bet those guy’s are having a ball.

Yeah, lets all tell the states with OEL to go to hell. I take it most of you morons never been to LA in the 70′s and 80′s and remember all the smog and that you couldn’t even see the mountains 10 miles from I-10. Yeah, lets tell California to go to hell….we want all that smog back.. We want to live in the past like most republicans.. What a novel idea.. Only a moron republican would come up with that crap. No wonder you lost again. Seems like more and more smartt people are switching to the left to get away from you dinasours…

Anybody that continues to support Chrysler or GM – knowing full well what they represent – is un-”Traditional”-American.

It still floors me to see all these good old boys who talk big conservative value talk, only to see them ponying-up their hard-earned for fascist-inspired cars. Pathetic.

I was recently going to by a Chrysler minivan but somehow I felt like buying GM which is owned by the Government was less patriotic than buying a Honda which is privately owned. To me, Honda represents true American values more than GM. Never would have thought I would feel that way. Sad if you think about it……

Keep your old cars/trucks and take care of the maintenance. Cheaper than a new one.
I have a 1993 Olds ’98 (17 + mpg around town) and a 2001 Chevy Venture. They are in top-notch shape and I’ll keep them both. People say I look like an old man in the Olds. I say…..what are you talking about? At 65, I look old in the Venture!
No one can tell my age on my motorcycles. haha!

GM is not owned by the Govt. By saying that you’re only making yourself look like a fool. You sound like you watch Faux News and/or Beck…

Does the bank own your home or do you….if you have a mortage? GM received a loan which is been paid back 98% with interest. Do some research.

Does it not concern you that over half a million jobs were saved or did Beck tell you otherwise? You know, it’s OK to think for yourself…. You might be surprised at your inteligence(sp) level..

By the time the United Nations gets through with US, we’ll all be walking. We won’t NEED cars because we’ll all live in the City elbow to elbow so animals can cover the land again. Agenda 21.Enjoy your freedom today. Tomorrow you might not have it.

This is central planning at it’s worst,if the government would get off the backs of automakers and let them sell the cars that people want to buy we wouldn’t have an issue. The EPA with it’s idiotic rules for special fuels for certain times of the year is another problem causing fuel prices to be higher than they should be. Just sell unleaded fuel and be done with it.

Hey SIMP, its nothing more than a Fiat Bambino just like those I first saw in Europe starting in early ’81. That tells me it is really advanced, LOL. Trouble is, it is not sturdy enough to transport the 2,000 kilogram battery to run it for any length of time. Little wonder that Chrysler knows that they will lose money with it.

PROGRESSIVESH*THEAD: There were 3 volt fires only and the issue was corrected. My friends that have them have literally bought 1 tank of gas in the past year. ONE! How much have you spent on gasoline in the past year? Who is the sucker now?

And maybe you missed the Tesla getting car of the year? 0-60 in 4 seconds! That is faster than anything anyone here drives.

There were a hell of a lot more than three volt fires there Einstein, ask your friends how much coal per mile they burn in their ‘green’ cars. If this anti business oppressive government would allow oil companies to exploit all our natural resources we wouldn’t have to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on so called ‘green’ cars.
