Here’s the New Electric Car Chrysler Expects to Lose Money on (And Here’s Why They’re Making it)
Chrysler will soon introduce the world to its very first battery-powered vehicle, the Fiat 500e.
However, far more interesting than the fact that itβs their first battery-powered car is the fact that Chrysler expects to lose between $8,000 and $9,000 for each one it sells, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Why would they produce a car thatβs sure to lose money? One word: California.
Let us explain.
California has one of the largest car markets in the country (it accounts for nearly 10 percent of all U.S. auto sales). California also has a strict zero-emission requirement.
So unless Chrysler offers a model that meets these increasingly stringent emissions standards, California could bar them from selling cars in the state.
Pretty great, right?
But wait! There’s more! Ten other states, including New York, New Jersey, and Maryland, have followed Californiaβs lead and have enacted similar zero-emission requirements. And much like California, Chrysler could be barred from selling cars in these states unless it offers a vehicle that meets these standards.
Problem is, nobody seems to want zero-emission vehicles.
California “can make us sell a minimum amount of cars, but unfortunately, they can’t make people buy them, or even get our own dealers to order them from us,” Kevin Kinnaw, Toyota’s U.S. manager of regulatory affairs, told the Wall Street Journal.
In short, in order to stay compliant with these various carbon emission laws, automakers must design and produce cars that no one will buy.
βSo far this year, only about 26,000 electric vehicles have been sold in the entire U.S., a tiny fraction of the 11.9 million cars and light trucks Americans have purchased,β the Journal report notes.
βAbout one in four electric vehicles sold are in California,β the report adds.

Posted on November 23, 2012 at 10:04amThe price of all the cars we actually want just went up. ” You can buy a gasoline powered car, if you want, but it will bankrupt you” – Obama.
Chrysler is either going to make LESS of a profit, which they give to other people in the form of salaries, benefits, or dividends – OR – they are going to make the same amount of money by charging more for other things – OR – they are going to reduce expense so they make the same profit. Items that could be considered expenses are as follows: salaries for the lowest seniority, health benefits, vacation time for the lower seniority people, total number of lower seniority personnel, holiday pay for lower seniority people, etc etc etc. They can’t be this stupid? Can they? what is the common theme, lower seniority gets to pay more and make less. Let’s call it the “lose money on something no one wants” tax.

“THAT” is what “THEY” want.
“THEY” are the environmental zealots who have ruined California’s economy and caused 1,000′s of businesses to leave the state. They do not care about the economy…Period! Environmentalism is God to these nut-jobs.
Almost all of the California desert has been closed to off-road vehicles. This has systematically been accomplished over the last 40-50 years by abusing the endangered species act. The closure causes 1000′s of jobs to be lost in the off-road industry.
Now we see the insanity of car makers attempting to appease the left-wing radicals again by “LOSING MONEY” on the manufacture of automobiles.
Somewhere, some place, some company has to call their bluff and refuse to bend to the idiocy of the left. Eventually, the radical left will have to answer when no one has a job.

Just price it at 30% above actual cost. If every manufacturer did that, you ‘may’ see some of those ridiculous regulations go away. California has had the most-strict regs as long as I can remember.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 9:51amThe motorized tin cans that Fiat exported to the US in the past deserved the “Fix It Again, Tony” reputation, but they produced some excellent products for the European market. From the reports I’ve seen, the Fiat 500 is a reliable urban vehicle, but, because of Fiat’s past performance in the US market, I’d have qualms about taking it on a cross-country trip. The 500e appears to be to the 500 what the Volt is to the Cruz — an over-priced, under-performing and life-threatening piece of PC crap.
It’s a sad time for the industry when the government forces it to produce Edsels.

Actually, Hitler “sold” the Volts (peoples) Wagon (car) a bit different than most people know. The workers in the Voltswagon factory were to receive a car for payment of services (working). No one knew which car they were to receive so every worker did their best to build the best car not knowing if they would be paid with the car that they were building.
Just a small fact I thought some people might enjoy.

Posted on November 21, 2012 at 4:32pmHey SIMP, its nothing more than a Fiat Bambino just like those I first saw in Europe starting in early ’81. That tells me it is really advanced, LOL. Trouble is, it is not sturdy enough to transport the 2,000 kilogram battery to run it for any length of time. Little wonder that Chrysler knows that they will lose money with it.

Posted on November 22, 2012 at 4:43amPROGRESSIVESH*THEAD: There were 3 volt fires only and the issue was corrected. My friends that have them have literally bought 1 tank of gas in the past year. ONE! How much have you spent on gasoline in the past year? Who is the sucker now?
And maybe you missed the Tesla getting car of the year? 0-60 in 4 seconds! That is faster than anything anyone here drives.

There were a hell of a lot more than three volt fires there Einstein, ask your friends how much coal per mile they burn in their ‘green’ cars. If this anti business oppressive government would allow oil companies to exploit all our natural resources we wouldn’t have to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on so called ‘green’ cars.
