News Anchors Stun Audience & Resign Live On-Air: Told to Do ‘Unbalanced News, Politically’

Two Maine news anchors resigned together at the end of Tuesday’s broadcast after “a longstanding battle with upper management over journalistic practices” including being expected to do politically unbalanced news, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio announced at the end of WVII-TV’s 6 p.m. newscast that it would be their final broadcast together.

“And finally tonight, this will be Tony and my final show together here on ABC 7,” Michaels said. “The last six years have been an interesting and enjoyable time for both of us as we have been the longest running news team in Bangor.”

Consiglio said “some recent developments have come to our attention though and departing together is the best alternative we can take.”

The Daily News reported both anchors were frustrated with the way they were told to do their jobs.

“I just wanted to know that I was doing the best job I could and was being honest and ethical as a journalist, and I thought there were times when I wasn’t able to do that,” Consiglio said.

Michaels, also the station’s news director, cited a “constant disrespecting and belittling of staff” and “a lack of knowledge from ownership and upper management in running a newsroom to the extent that I was not allowed to structure and direct them professionally.”

She also said they were “expected to do somewhat unbalanced news, politically.” Neither one said which political leaning that was.

Mike Palmer, WVII/WFVX vice president and general manager, told the newspaper he wasn’t entirely surprised by the resignations, calling it “unfortunate, but not unexpected.” Still, he disputed the characterizations of management’s role in the newsroom.

“Upper management is not involved in the daily production of the news. Period,” he said.

Neither reporter told anyone prior to the broadcast they were planning to resign.

“We figured if we had tendered our resignations off the air, we would not have been allowed to say goodbye to the community on the air and that was really important for us to do that,” Michaels said.

  Don’t run off the cliff. Were the anchors being pressured to move right or left? If they started out on the left and were being pressured into moving to the middle you may not be so quick to want them picked up.

  Smart move not giving management the opportunity to take away their goodbye. 20 years ago I gave a 2 week notice at a plant I had worked in for 8 years. I planned to take a “victory lap” to say goodbye to the employees I had worked with all over the plant. The end of the 1st week, I was called to the office at 10 minutes until get off time. I was told that I wasn’t being terminated but that they didn’t need me to finish my notice. Oh, and conveniently I was kept waiting until all my co-workers on that shift had left. I found out from a friend that the supervisor was telling everyone I had decided not to finish out my notice. I still owe him a black eye if I see him.

  Schuks – we all have it wrong! These are the smartest reporters in the whole nation. When Obama does his Hugo Chavez thing there will only be one state Television & one state radio. In this day we will probably have one person over state computer media. They know that theres going to be a lot of unemployed reporters across the country. The few that Obama keeps will just read what is on the prompter. This way these two can go ahead and find a job before the market is flooded.

  I agree that these two correspondents should be interviewed by TheBlaze TV as there have been precious few willing to take a stand like this in our uncertain economy. Maybe this is the beginning of an exodus of conscientious reporters who will seek a network such as TheBlaze – one that is not tabloid driven or driven by the corporations but rather one that employs investigative journalists in the tradition of Woodward and Bernstein.

  BROTHERSMITH……The truth is Ron Paul failed to move the conservative people, he attempted to pander to. Failed failed failed. It is too bad. Its also too bad, for you, politics belongs to the people, and not the candidates. When I read your posts and posts from a few others, like you, I am glad and proud that good sense prevailed and Ron Paul was forced out. I am a conservative Christian and I got very little to trust out of Paul……..I just don’t believe him……Don’t believe anybody else either, but not Paul……dreams and suppositions everywhere.

  Kindly provide real examples of the Blaze not reporting the truth. Not your opinion that something isn’t true. Not where they got a story wrong or repeated incorrect information, that happens. I vaguely remember a couple of stories that had errors. Show us where the Blaze has intentionally lied, misrepresented the truth. Show us. Show us.

  I respect their move and think they said good-bye to their viewers in a professional and classy way. Hopefully they were in the center and not liking which ever way the lean was going. After all, they are supposed to report the news as it is, not put a left or right spin on it.

  That said, if they’re on the Left, somebody will pick them up from the MSM. They’re probably calling their agents right now, since by doing this they have shown “credibility” against the Right, IF THAT IS THEIR AIM.
  
  If they’re on the Right, then they can send their resumes over to another station (which their respective agents are doing now as I write this – you can be sure.) or even try GBTV. Who knows what the future may hold? But I wouldn’t want to be dealing with that station’s HR right about now!

  I would like to have Glenn Beck interview them, too. It would be interesting to hear the reporters tell their side of the story. Regardless where the pressure came from trying to have the reporters be biased, let the reporters tell their story and let the chips fall where they may.

First of all this is the most biased website I read, I could not imagine more bias. Second coming here news is like having candy for dinner, you feel good but it does nothing for your mind, body or soul. Empty calories.   Gee, Brother Winston! Why are you surprised that GBTV has a slant? It makes no bones about being very clearly oriented toward reporting those things that the MSM leaves out. And that means, 98% of the time, those things are oriented to the right side of the political spectrum. They don’t apologize for that nor do they try to hide it. FOX claims to be fair and balanced, but we know it’s not truly that balanced. They do, somewhat, make up for the obvious bias found in the remainder of the MSM.
  
  So, what TRUTH is it that you don’t think is being reported? Give us a link. Tell us where to find it. Perhaps it is that your truth is your truth and you want the rest of us to see it like you do?
  
  I don’t buy everything I read here, nor do I buy everything I see on FOX or read on other blogs. Just like Glen Beck says every day that I hear him, “Don’t take my word for it. Do your own research. Use your own mind. Seek the truth. Pray about it. Then make your own decision.”

  I’ve researched at length the connections between Ron Paul, Rand Paul and Agenda 21 (I’ve read the book already and have received comments from the book’s original editor). Despite all the dubious information on the internet there is an objective and provable coordination between the libertarian intelligentsia of the the shadow elite behind the movement towards a one world government. The evidence is tenuous but definitely exists and is compelling.
  
  Question everything! If you think Rand and Ron Paul are “simply” trying to promote individualism, think twice. If you do the research you’ll find they are part of a broader movement, one not likely to increase, but rather decrease your freedoms.

  Thanks for your kind words. While I support and believe in liberty like Ron Paul, I do not worship him any more than I worship George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, etc.
  
  As to where I get my news? I go to many places including here. Don’t totally trust any of them and I can tell you that I think while Glen does a lot of good he “smells” like someone starting up a new religion or like some would say, a cult. Of all the places I go this is the most hostile to Paul supporters to the point of threatening violence. Would you like to be called a “Beckerhead”? I hear it elsewhere, kinda like “Paulbot” here.   It always amazes me when folks don’t understand the difference, so let me edify you if I may. There is no human on the face of the planet that is not biased. It is not possible. So when you tell me that you are reporting to me without bias that is a lie, our bias will always effect the way we see the world and consequently how that world is reported to you. So You may be saying at this point then why BLAZE TV? And it is as simple as this. They are honest and open about their bias, it is unmasked so I can apply my filters accordingly, however when you mask your bias then I have to be extra vigilant about what you are telling me, because I know you have a bias I just have to determine which filter to apply. And that makes me more distrustful of what you have said. I hope this helps you understand better.

  I think this can be summed up in the same way I summed up my decision not to vote libertarian to my wife: Ron Paul went a solid distance in the Republican primary. He lost due to whatever crybaby excuses people want to make then made a beeline back to his camp, he refused to say anything good about the party he was attempting to win the nomination for…he deserved nothing. Gary Johnson..I wanted to vote for this guy…I wish my wife had voted for this guy, The story is similar though. He gets shafted or whatever other crybaby excuses (life is so unfair) and spends the rest of the time against the same party he was trying to lead….Both of these people got from me what every other person should have given them. Nothing. They are turncoat babies. Its that simple. I now think we have just shy of 4 months to make the correct conservative changes to the republican party..or my true choice. lets make a third party that counts for something and can actually make a change. Divisive tactics from Libertarians only hurt conservatives. The liberals win when we have conservatives in more than one camp.

If they wanted to move the news to a more objective centralized reporting (away from the MSM massive leftist slant) then they might get offers from CNN and MSNBC all over the place.   *WVII has always been the underdog station in Bangor and finances are tightly controlled.
  *It’s an ABC affiliate.
  *They don’t even HAVE a weather/meteorology department (their weather segment is pre taped elsewhere).
  *It’s owned by an investment group from New York.

  Looks like the news station was trying to move in the direction of Fox, so the liberal anchors bailed. At least that is what a few other sites are suggesting. In just as much glee as many on here thinking they bailed because of a liberal slant. When journalists think the news is slanted it USUALLY means that it is more even handed than the normal Pravda Marxist Statist talking points they are used to. I have little faith that there are more than 15% of reporters in the industry that believe in objective reporting or in conservative reporting.

The GBTV should contact them and offer them a position doing something…. Obviously these are people of some character, and deserve a job in a better place…

Left leaning station. Good for Cindy and Tony for standing by their principals. I refuse to watch the networks due to left leaning news.

  The story doesn’t seem to mention which way they wanted the news “slanted”. Did they want them to say illegal immigrant rather than oppressed migrant potential citizen? Did they want them to say Business Leaders rather than Greedy Corporate Capitalists? If they resigned because the station wanted them to slant more to the left than the news media already does, then that is news. If they left because they graduated journalism school and are Marxists like 85% of the rest of the “journalists” then this isn’t really that big of news. Just Pravda condensing the ranks.

  The Blaze just seems to tease the story. If they left because they don’t want to report balanced reporting because unbalanced reporting is anything to the right of Joseph Stalin, then this isn’t news. Details Blaze.. details!

  I wonder if MSNBC will ever talk about the history of slavery in US and how many black slave owners there were in US history. They could also bring up that the Irish and Scottish were sold as slaves, too. I guess racism can only be committed by Caucasians and not by the current liberal policies.
