Black Friday: Here Are the Top 5 Things you Should Think Twice About Before Buying

It’s almost that time again! Black Friday is almost upon us!

For those of you who dig this non-holiday, you’re probably already thinking about your in-store strategy. They’re going to open those doors, you’re going to run in there as fast as you can, maybe trip over a person or two, and — and then what?

What should you get? What should you avoid?

You see, many stores are guilty of promoting Black Friday “deals” that aren’t actually deals at all. So what should you be on the lookout for? We’re glad you asked. That’s what we’re here for.

As you sit there camped out in front of some big box store, people crowding you, take a few moments to consider the following. Who knows? It might save you a bundle.

The following are the top five Black Friday “deals” you should think twice about:

HDTVs

Black Friday Deals You Should Think Twice AboutBe extremely wary of deals on HDTVs!

There’s a reason certain flat screen TVs run real cheap on this blackest of Fridays: They’re not very good.

A high-quality, brand name HDTV is pricey, but worth the wait. Unfortunately for the person who has their heart set on getting one for Christmas, the best time to invest in an HDTV is in January and February, when retailers need to make room for new models. Hopefully, the person on your shopping list can hold out until then (and if that person also happens to be your significant other, you can say you bought it for them for Valentine’s Day. You’ll score so, so many points).

Bottom line: Unless you want a third-tier, low-quality product, we suggest you stay far away from TV deals that seem too good to be true.

Christmas Decorations

Black Friday Deals You Should Think Twice AboutI know, right? Who buys Christmas decorations on Black Friday?

You’d be surprised.

Decorations are a major impulse buy on Black Friday. A string of lights here, a Nativity set there, a 20-foot inflatable Frosty the Snowman here — why not?

Why? Because you’ll save a whole lot more if you wait just a couple of weeks. Decorations tend to decrease in price the closer we get to Christmas. (Of course, decorations are also ridiculously cheap after December 25, but what’s the point?)

iPad mini

Black Friday Deals You Should Think Twice AboutFirst off, if you’re looking to save money this Christmas, an iPad mini is probably a bad place to start. They retail for about $330. But let’s say you’ve been saving up for a fancy Apple gadget. Is the iPad mini still a bad idea?

We’d say yes.

See, if the iPad Mini is anything like the first generation iPad, it won’t see a significant discount for a couple of months (unless, of course, a desperate retailer for some reason decides to offload Apple’s newest toy at discount prices).

But you know what? The iPad 2 is basically the same product and it might be cheaper.

The “iPad mini features essentially the same innards as the iPad 2, and we’re predicting that the latter will fall to $299 this Black Friday. Therefore, the iPad 2 will offer more screen real estate at a lower price,” Deal News notes.

So there you go. Sure, it might be a little bigger than the mini, but at a cheaper price and for the same basic product, the iPad 2 seems like a perfect alternative.

Small home appliances

Black Friday Deals You Should Think Twice AboutWhile many stores offer good Black Friday deals on large appliances (i.e. refrigerators, washing machines, etc.), deals on small appliance tend to be pretty lousy.

In fact, according to data collected by DailyFinance, certain small home appliances such as vacuum cleaners are cheaper before Black Friday. Other items, including microwaves and blenders, are cheaper in Mid-December.

Of course, there may be the stray small appliance deal here and there, but, as always, be wary.

Toys

Black Friday Deals You Should Think Twice AboutOkay, now this one seems silly. Why should consumers think twice about buying toys on Black Friday?

Trust us, Black Friday is a terrible time to buy toys. Like small home appliances and decorations, toys decline in price the closer we get to Christmas.

“Many will likely still be discounted for Black Friday, and it may feel pretty good to get your shopping done early, but you won’t love that sinking feeling you’ll get when you see those toys discounted for less about two weeks before Christmas,” Deal News notes.

So take your pick: Would you rather spend more and buy early, or spend less and wait a few weeks?

Your choice.

haha, silly consumer… most credit cards will give u 12 – 18 months with no interest and no annual fee. Plus additional cash back discounts like 5-15% percent back. When the deal is up, if u haven’t paid the card off, snag a new card with the same deal an intro free transfer period, transfer the balance then close the old card. (or keep it for an emergency if u don’t have another) Stick w/ the deals, don’t listen to banks and other finance companies that offer credit advice. They are clueless parrots who tell u what they are trained to tell u to make them money. Don’t pay annual fees, interest or use secured cards and CC cards will become yur next best friend.

Buy what you need not what you want. The tax man comes early next year courtesy of Obama. Hold onto those extra dollars. A bunch of material crap is not the meaning we celebrate Christ-mas in the first place and you can argue on the date but it is the day set aside to celebrate the first coming of Christ. He should be the reason for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Grow up, loser. If you had an ounce of style, you’d realize $100+ jeans are commonplace. The fact that Glenn Beck opts to offer a pair of American-made jeans will up the price. Oh, and by the way, the entire line of jeans sold out almost immediately, jerk. I guess people wanted to buy the product.

I bet when you speak to anyone (if they listen) racism is in your words also. If you believe you are not racist read what you write, objectively. My guess is you know you are racist but hide it by pointing the finger elsewhere. It is obvious you have problems with people that may be different than you or think for themselves, and have not fallen to the Public education system (modeled after Prussia).

You could always wait until you kid tells you on Dec. 23 that he hopes Santa brings him this certain toy, that he wants soooo bad. Then you race out to Toys R Us about an hour before closing and see that exact toy (probably the last in the country) in someone’s abandoned, well they actually left their cart in one aisle while shopping in another, so you slowly walk up to the cart and quickly grab the toy and race to the checkout lane. Then on Christmas day you remind your child that Santa loves him very much but the importance and meaning of Christmas is all about the Baby Jesus.

I am guilty…but technically the cart was abandoned, there for the toy was as well.

We bought my son’s Christmas present in September. He loves Thomas the Train, and Toys R Us had a really nice sale going. Even better than that, I found a coupon. Paid only 30% of retail price, and got shopping done early. I found the same item in a BF ad for only 30% off of retail. :-) BF seems to invoke a lot of panicked, poorly planned impulse buys. We have been tracking a few big ticket items for a few months now, and so far, the BF deals have been underwhelming. Kind of hoping for some better deals after the new year.

I always finish my Christmas shopping by Thanksgiving. That way, I can stay out of the stores until the new year. If you shop throughout the year, you can usually get far better deals than “Black Friday” or any other sale up until Christmas.

I also shop after Christmas for any cards, decorations and wrapping paper I may need. I can usually get them for 50% or more off – it’s hard to beat that deal. I can also usually find Christmas wrapping paper that is not Christmas-specific (e.g, solid green or red foil), so I can use that wrapping paper for birthday, anniversary, etc. presents.

Indeed. It doesn’t surprise me that the one day Jesus said to keep in remembrance of him has remained sacrosanct, while the pagan holidays that pseudo-christians covered with Jesus Christ bumper stickers (metaphorically) have become commercialized.

But that’s okay. God has a history of weeding out the herd for the purity of the flock and Jesus himself said the path to righteousness is narrow and few will find it. The logical conclusion of that statement is: most people won’t find it.

During a lull in our Thanksgiving piggery, I had a brother in-law who NEVER talks politics, or guns or “doomsday” pause and say “You know, I have a feeling that this is that last good Thanksgiving that we are going to have.” Those words from HIM and the way he said it – I got goosebumps like I only have gotten when I almost got killed a couple of times. Yeah – screw Black Friday – Saturday we have a gun show – I’m taking every “Christmas” dollar I have and buying ammunition and some spare parts. When people like that say stuff like that – the door is closing fast.

Has anyone besides myself noticed how “Black Friday” is slowly eating away at Thanksgiving? It reminds me of how Santa and the Easter bunny have slowly become the focus of our other major holidays.

This article even mentions how more stores are starting earlier on Thursday.(!) In ten years will we be reminiscing about how Thanksgiving used to be celebrated by gathering to share a meal, rather than rushing to nab a deal?

(See the article here on The Blaze: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/8-little-known-facts-about-thanksgiving/ ) Today REALLY isn’t Thanksgiving! George Washington and Abe Lincoln proclaimed it to be on the last Thursday of November. Roosevelt changed it to the earlier date as a “boost to the economy”. In other words, he was the one who turned it into the commercialism bonanza that we see today. Sad isn’t it?

Yes, noticed a long time ago. I only did Black Friday ONCE in my life and that was 20 years ago. The majority of the “deals” are junk, and who jumps at this are people who live to shop. My sister-in-law is one of them, she is up at 3:00 am and ready to go. It is annoying to walk into a store mid-October and find the Christmas aisle already up. LEDs TVs, Over in Asia, like Singapore where I am visiting, the stores carry 98 % in Big LED TVs. They are clearer, sharper, better color and awesome, then LCD TVs. At your stores, look and see if the majority are LCD TVs. If so, I wonder if manufactures are dumping off to make you think your getting a good TV. I have been in lots of stores over here, LED TVs everywhere.

LED TVs are much better, last longer, they’ve been here in USA since 2009, just allot more expensive. Regular LCDs have florescent light tubes to provide the light, they also require starters and those wear out, with LEDs the life expectancy is 100,000 hours of light production.

It can get confusing for the people that aren’t technical, LEDs are LCD too, just a different way of lighting the LCD panel. If it’s a true LED, it will have that on it’s label. LED edge lit is a cheaper version. The difference in LED full array panel is night and day different in brightness and contrast ratios. 120hz is the minimum to buy, 60hz will show blurs on the edges for football games or any action oriented video.

Box said 720p, but I can see 1080p in the upper corner with some video sources like my Roku connected via HDMI. (This is from the TV’s status message. 480i when I switch to my VCR and DVD recorder. 720p or 1080p when I switch to my Roku – depending on how I have it set.) This was a replacement for a 13″ CRT from 1987 that is not a primary TV. I just needed it for my tapes I’m copying to DVD and as a second TV.

“(unless, of course, a desperate retailer for some reason decides to offload Apple’s newest toy at discount prices).”

That won’t happen. Retailers have agreements with Apple that forces them to sell Apple gadgets for list price unless Apple gives them the ok to lower it. And Apple gives ALL retailers the same price. You can’t shop around because everyone is forced to charge the same price for any given Apple product, unless it’s used.

Much of what’s sold as “Black Friday specials” aren’t “specials” at all! Any dummy knows what the stores do for Black Friday… discount just a few items (but don’t have much stock) so that the crazy shoppers rush in only to find their “deal” is sold-out but, since they’re there already, they spend a fortune on regular price stuff.

    Black Friday is for IDIOTS!

I have never shopped on a Black Friday. I just don’t need the stress. A story: Some years ago a friend and her Mother camped outside a Fred Meyer store in Salem, Oregon. They went there to get a good buy for…socks. As the doors opened and hundreds swarmed in to get their good buy on socks,my friends Mother was knocked to the ground by another woman who wanted to be ahead of her to buy socks. True story. Me? I’ll just go to the store and pay the extra fifty cents for a package of socks prior to or after Black Friday.

It’s funny you should mention socks. I saw Walmart’s Black Friday ad several days ago and noticed that socks were going to be on sale. The next day, I hollered at my kids for losing my socks when they do laundry. While shopping for food items the following afternoon, I decided to check the price of my favorite socks. Surprise (not) they were still cheaper than the ones on sale. Looking forward to sleeping in.

I know that store! Years ago I was staying with my brother and it was a very big deal that they were opening up at 7:00 in the morning and passing out donuts. How times have changes…

I have always loved homemade gifts above all else. More people should give it a try and give the stores the finger.
      HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

My family is not falling for this silly frivolous buying garbage any more. We will spend Christmas together having quality time with each other, celebrating our beliefs and with little to no store bought, throw-away garbage. The silly buying for the sake of buying game is over. It’s back to real life for us.

The rest of the year, it happens that when you need something in your house, that thing is always behind the big mountain of Christmas decorations….
