Here Are 6 Thanksgiving Day Stats and Facts That Might Surprise You

Each year, myths and facts about the first thanksgiving and other traditions are traded back and forth. And because we think they’re fascinating, we’ve decided to bring you a few of the more unusual Thanksgiving Day stats (in addition to some of the annual fun facts because, let’s face it, they’re fun):

  • Miles your turkey flew (by plane that is … domesticated turkeys can’t fly): This really depends, of course, on where you live. A number based on many assumptions that has been circulating since the early 2000′s claims produce grown in the U.S. and shipped to Chicago (it was chosen as the end destination for a variety of reasons) will travel about 1,500 miles before it reaches your plate.

And in case you were wondering, 736 million pounds of turkey were eaten in the U.S. for Thanksgiving 2011. Minnesota leads turkey production, followed by North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, and Indiana.

Here’s a map by Smithsonian Magazine that visualizes the location of the nation’s turkey producers:

The largest circles represent larger producers of turkeys. (Image: Smithsonian Magazine)

  • Stop blaming the turkey: While we’re talking turkey, it’s time you stop blaming tryptophan for why you’re “too tired” to help clean up dinner.

Recent studies have found that the amount of carbohydrates consumed during the feast allow for the increase of tryptophan in the brain and cause drowsiness. So you can still blame the amino acid, but leave the turkey out of it.

  • Don’t forget the cranberry sauce: It’s not a large part of the meal, but there’s always that one relative who will complain if the tart, gelatinous glop doesn’t make its way onto the table.

Coming in at a whopping 450 million pounds in 2012, Wisconsin leads the U.S. in cranberry production. But if you think that’s impressive, consider the following: Total annual U.S. cranberry production is about 789 million pounds (although not all of this is turned into the jellied relish we all know and love though).

Recently, some have criticized the excessive use of helium due to a dwindling supply, but others have pointed out that while supplies are lower, it doesn’t mean we’re running out. Tim Worstall for Forbes earlier this year stated that infrastructure that produces helium (it’s a byproduct of natural gas extraction) has seen closure in recent years, which has resulted in a smaller supply and higher prices.

  • Win, lose or tie: The Detroit Lions have one of the longest histories when it comes to Thanksgiving Day football. Playing their first game in 1934 and consistently every year ever since (except for a hiatus during World War II), the Lions head into today’s game against the Houston Texans with a series record of 33-34-2 for the 69 games they’ve played on Thanksgiving.

The Dallas Cowboys also have been playing consistently since 1966. The Cowboys play the Washington Redskins today. The third game taking place Thursday is between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets.

  • How long would you have to exercise to burn all your T-day calories: Total caloric intake on Thanksgiving Day — snacking, main event, dessert and drinks — is about 4,500. For a 180-pound man to burn off the roughly 2,000 extra calories consumed, he would need to walk for five hours.

I have much to be thankful for. I have a husband that is super special, my children that all have jobs and wonderful daughters-inlaw and beautiful grandchildren. We will all have dinner together today and for that I am ever so grateful.

I want to keep hammering home the fact that in the entire population of the world since time began, only 5 percent of us have ever lived in FREEDOM ! (No Kings, No Dictators, No Masters, No Generals but SELF-GOVERNED) We have to fix our Voter ID/registration/polls; We have to fix our curriculum being taught by Public Schools that do not include AMERICAN HISTORY and the amazing GIFT from GOD that AMERICA is; We must put GOD back in our lives – our schools – our public places. We need to allow Atheists to think what they want but not to bully the 85 % of us who believe in GOD (because we don’t want law suits – the way to do this of course is to organize a PRO-GOD group who will in turn sue them for trying to keep us from worshiping and honoring GOD. )
I’m Thankful for our TROOPS and their families at home. I’m thankful for the PATRIOTS WHO ‘GET’ AMERICA AND WHAT it means to the rest of the world. I’m Thankful for places where our freedom(s) can be expressed and for GLENN BECK et al and support them. I’m Thankful for decent people like Mitt and Ann Romney – who will do more GOOD for our country than anyone can imagine. What great role models!! Full circle: I’m thankful to live in a FREE NATION and the ability to combat the lies that some commie-plant teachers have tried to instill in our kids. BE HAPPY TODAY. THANK GOD for TODAY! Thank you Blaze !!

Very nice! If you haven’t seen Wed’s show with David Barton, on THEBlaze, it is a must see! A historian guest even mentions that early American’s observed the Feast of Tabernacles! Gave me great hope for the future when every human on earth will observe all of God’s holy days and no longer the satan driven ones of today. (Thanksgiving of course will be on a daily basis.)
      Peace be with you!

So the control freak liberal/Progressive/Socialist/Communist/atheists CHANGED a holiday where we are supposed to be thankful to GOD for our blessings into an opportunity for an economic bonanza. No wonder people are stressed, disillusioned, and feel the holidays have become too commercialized. It’s the PROGRESSIVE’S fault! Well, in protest, starting next year I’m starting a new tradition. My family is going to celebrate Thanksgiving on the LAST Thursday of November, and I won’t buy a THING until the day after the REAL Thanksgiving! Feel free to join me.

WOW! All this sniping at one another and no one noticed the glaring fact of our egregious waste: 736 MILLION pounds of turkey in a country with 310 million people of which a good 25% are either babies, pre-teens or seniors who won’t eat much, maybe another 15% don’t eat turkey at all which means the remainder ate about 4 pounds each. I can’t believe that it is possible so a lot went to waste.

Yet we whine about how hard times are. And get harangued to make “donations” of turkeys to so many so-called “less fortunate” who end up wasting it, too, because, after all, it was “given” to them and they have no horse in the race of self-responsibility. So why should they be frugal?

    I must be missing something.

You can’t believe someone can eat 4 lbs. of turkey in the course of a year?
If you do the math you would see that equals about 5.34 pounds of turkey each per month ion one fat sandwich

Remember, if more people ate turkey there would be fewer pigs

Echoing the sentiments here on this day of Thanksgiving. We still have the right to freely worship.

That freedom has yet to be taken away.

We remember the people who came here to escape religious intolerance.

We must also remember that there are those of any religion or mindset, who may seek to subject us to their beliefs.

I will remember their rights, as fellow men, and women but I will limit their perceived beliefs, that force of will is necessary to mandate their beliefs upon me.

Their force of will shall be repelled by my own, in sufficiency to allow me, my God given right to freedom.

God Bless all, on this day of Thanksgiving, for all the grace he has given the people of The United States of America.

Unfortunately, it WAS changed so that the merchants would have more shopping days until Christmas! No wonder we are all sick of Christmas by the time it gets here! It’s Franklin Roosevelt’s fault!!! The Commie changed it the day AFTER Christmas! The Commies were trying to manipulate the economy back then just as they are now. Fake. Fake. Fake. I see why Glenn Beck hates F.D.R. so much.

“On December 26, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a joint resolution of Congress changing the national Thanksgiving Day from the last Thursday in November to the fourth Thursday. Two years earlier, Roosevelt had used a presidential proclamation to try to achieve this change, reasoning that earlier celebration of the holiday would give the country an economic boost.”

Not ALL of us are sick of Christmas by the time it gets here, and Thanksgiving is a wonderful day of giving thanks to our God and Creator.

The commercialization of the holidays by non-Christians does NOT mean that I must lose my joy and focus on the One True God Who is the Author of life and liberty and the Reason that there even is something to celebrate and for which to give thanks.

I shall continue enjoying Christmas because I continue in Christ. I shall keep my focus on Him and His matchless work of grace, and I look for His soon return and the fulfullment of my chief end: to love Him and enjoy Him forever; for I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day!

I love Thanksgiving, I love Christmas, but I love Easter even more, for on that day I celebrate the finished work of grace that was begun at the Incarnation and virgin birth of Christ and for which I am thankful every day!

Given the choice of picking a day created by F.D.R. or the day chosen by George Washington and Abe Lincoln – I’m going with Washington and Lincoln!

      @NO_MORE_OBAMA
Well, you could be like my family. I’ve been battling cancer for 2 years, with it still active. My husband is currently in the VA hospital because they had to remake his leg bone from bone grafts from his hip. My oldest son is down syndrome and autistic and my younger son is severly ADHD, and our credit card just got compromised. But, I still woke up this morning. And because Obama hasn’t turned off the internet, I’m here reading the news, and texting my husband Happy Thanksgiving.

      Hey No More..
Lori Ann posts a good reason to be thankful. Concerning your line of thought I’m thankful I wasn’t born in ANY other country. God bless the USA.
Happy Thanksgiving Lori Ann, No More and all….

NO_MORE_OBAMA. Start by putting that American Flag pic you have as your avatar in it’s correct and proper display as a start… then move on from there. Positive thinking. We can beat this thing. You are not alone…

NO_MORE_OBAMA My flag is currently flying in the distress position as well and will change it after the Marxist pig is gone, but the damage he’s done will be with us for generations.

      Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Giving thanks here my friend! I just filled my freezers with 200 lbs of venison, just before Thanksgiving day. What else does a guy need? Meat and loved ones on Thanksgiving day. That’s a blessing… and thankful I am!

@NO_MORE_OBAMA… What blessings? Despite the things you mention which are totally true… you still must carry on and acknowledge and give thanks to the Lord for the blessings he provided. Look a bit deeper. I am sure you find something after reflecting a bit.

      Happy Thanksgiving all!

      Lorian,
God love you sweet heart, you made my evening.

We stayed home from the big family deal, so no turkey, no dressing, none of the trimmings, we had tuna fish from last nights dinner. Big whoop, at least we ate, and on our own dime. We stayed home because my wife is sick with a cold, she’s got a tooth with an infection that just had a root canal LAST January, and all this has made her postpone a knee replacement. I’m on disability so money is tight all the time, now we’ve got our 20% to pay, and another root canal. Again big whoop.

I’m with you Loriann, sometimes we’ve just gotta be happy top be above ground, and No_More_Obama, the Lord will provide. Just remember, sometimes we gets de turkey, sometimes we gets tuna fish on whole wheat, so don’t worry, be happy!

(and Lord remind ME of this tomorrow or next week sometime when I’M complaining… )
