Allan Pinkerton, President Lincoln, and General John McClernand at Antietam. October 3, 1862. (Library of Congress)
On October 3, 1863, in the midst of a civil war that was tearing the country and American spirit at its seams, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that the traditional Thanksgiving celebration–which had existed in several states for some time–would be a national holiday celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November.
Sarah J. Hale, the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book and author of the classic “Mary Had a Little Lamb” nursery rhyme, had campaigned for over fifteen years to make Thanksgiving a “national and fixed Union Festival,” and struck a chord with Lincoln in a letter to the president dated five days before his proclamation. The festival had been present in the states for centuries before Lincoln’s proclamation, with most tracing the first Thanksgiving back to Massachusetts in 1621. Presidents George Washington and James Madison called for days of Thanksgiving during their administration, and the Continental Congress declared a Thanksgiving holiday in 1777 for the original 13 colonies.
By the time Lincoln entered office the holiday was celebrated through much of the union, and would even emerge in Confederacy. PBS notes that after the Confederate victory at Bull Run, Jefferson Davis called for a Thanksgiving celebration in the South on Sunday, July, 28, 1861. Davis had also declared a “day of Thanksgiving” in the Confederacy in September 1862. In addition to Hale’s persistance, Vera H-C Chan writes that Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation may have been politically motivated–as the holiday traced its roots to evangelical Protestants who were the leading voices for the abolition of slavery and the holiday. Slave owner and States’ rights advocate Virginia Governor Henry Wise was against it, and called Thanksgiving a “theatrical claptrap.”
After the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, Lincoln first declared a Thanksgiving celebration on Thursday August 6. A few months later, during the time when Lincoln was contemplating delivering an address on the purpose of war (the Gettysburg Address), Lincoln issued the October 3 proclamation which would set the path forward for the national November Thanksgiving holiday we celebrate today. Lincoln’s proclamation was publishing in the New York Times two days after the president issued it. Below is the text of the proclamation:
The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.
Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.
No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.

Nov. 23, 2012 at 2:22pmWe as a country are too lazy and complacent about history as it relates to our current state with gov’t. I was taught in school to praise and revere Lincoln, like everyone. On a chance encounter with the truth I revere him no more. Regardless of my new opinion of him, read, learn, and study the truth about Lincoln for yourself. Not just the educational text books provided by the victor ( the union ) of the civil war, but look at speeches, biographies, news articles from that time. It is only then that you will understand the dysfunctional gov’t we all despise and live with now is a result, directly or indirectly, of his actions

Nov. 23, 2012 at 5:49pmTrue, I applaud your independent research.
Lincoln’s state of the Union addresses are enough to disprove many of the subsequent myths.
December 3, 1861. “Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.”
Marx could not have said it better. Obama could not have executed Lincoln’s economic strata better during the GM bankruptcy – right? In fact, Marx did state these lines first. Reckon Lincoln was a student of “Das Kapital”? If not, I’m sure he was a fan of Marx’s articles in the New York Tribune (Horace Greely and Charles Dana’s newspaper).
Keep studying – when you find the socialist connections to Lincoln, you’re eyes will bleed.

Nov. 23, 2012 at 12:26pmAbraham Lincoln should without a doubt be named America’s greatest war criminal. His war of invasion not only killed over 600,000 innocent Americans but it was obvious from his earlier speeches that he had previously advocated the prevalent constitutional right of democratic, state by state secession. Lincoln’s War also effectively overthrew the existing decentralized, limited federal government that had existed and governed well in the US since established by America’s founding fathers. Lincoln bastardized a respected federal government with limited powers into a dictatorial, uncontrollable Washington federal empire.
Because of Lincoln, the former American constitutional republic fell from a dream of liberty and limited government into the nightmare big government we have today without the earlier checks and balances of state sovereignty. After Lincoln, In foreign policy, the US forgot George Washington’s warning about neutrality and we became an aggressive military abroad until today we have troops defending the Washington Empire in over 144 nations around the world.

Nov. 23, 2012 at 10:13amSince this is the season to praise Lincoln, why don’t we take a look at his record on the 1st Amendment?
Lets see; imprisoned 10′s of thousands of northerners for dissenting with his opinions (including a pastor for not including him in his prayer), closed down 1000′s of news papers for printing articles not conducive to his policies, and actually sending government thugs to arrest/harrass a Supreme Court Justice for not backing his un-constitutional actions. So much for free speech, huh?
Suspension of Habeas Corpus was the least of Lincoln’s unconstitutional actions and was step #1 to crushing the 1st Amendment. Which is precisely why Obama keeps Lincoln’s portrait in his office.
Beck says “we need another Lincoln” – I say, “We have the new Lincoln in office right now, God help us”.
The wise know the myth of Obama is being created and propagated in the exact same fashion as Lincoln’s. It ain’t good.

Nov. 23, 2012 at 10:51amWow…your ignorance is as bountiful as my fest was last night. Lincolns actions, while harsh to be sure, were in defence of preserving the Union and the Constitution which were in a state of full out crisis, rebellion and open war against the United States…a Treasonous action to begin with and as such any Officals in government or persons otherwise supporting the Confederacy were engaged in Treason against the United States… Lincolns sweeping powers in Office were a direct result of Southern actions.
I would also suggest that holding Human beings against their will in what amounts to Forced Labor camps is a much larger crime against Humanity and the spirit of the American Constitution and American Liberty than anything Lincoln may have done to correct that horrific mistake and put an end to that evil.
The issue really isn’t Lincolns actions at the time of the greatest National Crisis in US history, the issue is the abuse by later politicians, like Obama, trying to use Lincolns actions as an excuse or precedent to rationalize their own. No President since Lincoln has faced that massive of a National Crisis, and I think that the threshold for such actions today must be approaching the Threat to the United States Lincoln faced in 1861, Open Rebellion and War. Don’t give me the States rights argument either, because the state right being debated WAS slavery. It was ALL about Slavery no matter how you slice it or try to hide that Sin…Read the Confederate Constitution.

To avoid misconstruction of what I have said, I depart from my purpose not to speak of particular amendments so far as to say that, holding such a provision to now be implied constitutional law, I have no objection to its being made express and irrevocable.”
Abraham Lincoln, 1st Inaugural Address, March 4, 1861
Lincoln is referring to The Corwin Amendment (“…no objection to it being express and irrevocable”):
“The Corwin Amendment is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution passed by the 36th Congress, 2nd Session, on March 2, 1861, in the form of House (Joint) Resolution No. 80. It would forbid subsequent attempts to amend the Constitution to empower the Congress to “abolish or interfere” with the “domestic institutions” of the states, including “persons held to labor or service” (a reference to slavery).”

I am perfectly happy to have a dialog. Yes, that is a very fair point about Habeas Corpus and well put (see above). That said, the southern states still did enter into an illegal confederation.
Article 1 – The Legislative Branch, Section 10 – Powers Prohibited of States
—————————————-
“No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation…”
—————————————-
Which is exactly what they did and were expressly prohibited from doing, yet did it anyhow.
—————————————
“No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay.”
—————————————-
The first shot was fired by confederates at The Battle of Fort Sumter, which they were expressly prohibited from doing.
…as I initially stated, I am happy to have a dialog and discussion.

Nov. 22, 2012 at 9:10pmConsidering that the states did not enter into any confederation while still a membr of the Union, that claim is without standing. The Confederate States of America was formed AFTER the original Southern States had left the Union peaceably. Each state that protested the election of Lincoln and seceeded after he was elected then joined the CSA. These states did not form the CSA while still members of the United States, and there was no law or clause in the Constitution which either forced an eternal membership or denies a right to withdrawal from the Union by any member of the Union.

Now there’s some irony for you:
—————
“The “shot heard ’round the world” is a phrase that has come to represent several historical incidents. The line is originally from the opening stanza of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Concord Hymn” (1837), and referred to the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. This 1775 first shot was fired during an armed standoff between British forces and local militia in Lexington, escalating into engagements at the Old North Bridge in the battles of Lexington and Concord.”

Nov. 22, 2012 at 3:10pmI’ll have to say, I am beginning to get a bit burn out on with the Abraham Lincoln articles. My main concern is that they guy did suspend Habeus Corpus–I understand why he did it–but I also know that he took power that he did not have the right to take by denying citizens the right to be brought before a judge or court for unlawful detainment.
What that means is he did exactly what we have been fighting so hard against: an out-of-control government that ignores the constitution and a president who will snatch power from the people of this land when he deems it necessary.
I would probably give the Abraham Lincoln posts a rest for awhile–just saying.

I got news for you then……..
Article I only applies to the Legislative branch:
Article 1 – The Legislative Branch
The powers belonging to the Executive are to be found inside Article II:
Article 2 – The Executive Branch
The Founding Fathers obviously didn’t mean for the three branches to have the ability to seize and subsequently use for themselves any of the powers exclusively belonging to other branches besides themselves….
However, Lincoln did just that (with impunity, I might add)…

That was not the case here either…The states had removed themselves peaceably from the union and had then formed a separate government just as the United States had done with Britain….All miltary assets except for Ft. Sumter and a minor naval base in Florida had been removed by the previous government. Lincoln reversed the policies of his predecessor and attempted to re-enforce Ft Sumter in an act of beligerence against an established Confederation of Southern States. The resulting “battle” was casualty free, and could have ended the “war” there. But Lincoln WANTED a war….the result was 600,000 + needless military deaths and many thousands of civilians in the South murdered, raped and starved. This is Lincoln’s legacy along with the beginning of a tradition of Federal Primacy concerning the States, and growing strength of the Federl Government.

You cannot posit that Lincoln should not have done what he did, without following his inaction to it’s logical conclusions, which would have been two smaller weaker states each mutally focused on the destruction of the other; two weakened states with their attentions turned inward where one strong state stands now. There would have been no American industrial revolution, no aid to Great Britain during two world wars, no technological progress as we now have and a myriad of other areas that have benefited from the existence of a single strong America.
You may not like what Lincoln did, but the fact is that his actions are responsible for the saving of a single strong America with all that means in terms of world history. I for one support the actions of that great man, just as I can overlook the short comingsChurchillhill.

The failings of modern society in regards to our history – or any history for that matter – is they refuse to look on the past in the context that events and decisions were actually taking place under. Context is everything – you can’t apply what we know at this moment to a situation that was happening during any other moment in the past, as they were not blessed with foresight and hadn’t learned the lessons that we have at their expense.

——————————————–
“The privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it.”
——————————————–
In regard to a state’s right to secede, nowhere in the Constitution does it say that the union must be permanent, which means then under the 10th Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
…which I whole-hardheartedly agree with. The only problem though,
Article 1, Section 10:
——————————————
No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation
——————————————
Which is expressly prohibited and which is exactly what they did, hence the 10th Amendment no longer applies.

Nov. 22, 2012 at 11:15amanother lincoln article on theblaze…When is Glenn going to expose lincoln as a progressive and a tyrant? He has done it for all the other presidents.
