Teacher-Student Brawl Goes Viral

A fight between a high school substitute teacher and an unnamed student was caught on a cell phone and posted to Facebook with the title, “BoI only at Palm Beach Lakes smh [shake my head]…”:

The incident at the Florida high school took place on November 8, 2012, according to WPTV, but it’s just now going viral.

When asked about the incident, students spoke highly of the substitute teacher who they identify as “Mr. Smith” or “Smitty.”

“It’s just like, to see a kid, someone like that step up to someone. First of all you should have respect for that man. I know I would have,” Darrel Phillips, a senior at Palm Beach Lakes High in Florida, told WPTV.

Phillips, like his colleagues, believes both parties may be to blame for the incident.

“A teacher should, you know, stand up for himself, but not to go on ahead and you know. I’m speechless right now,” he said.

So far, the high school is keeping quiet on the incident, opting only to issue the following comment: “The incident is being investigated, and no report or further comment is available since the investigation remains open.”

At this moment, it is unclear what prompted the fight.

According to the WPTV report, the teacher has been terminated and the unnamed student has been expelled:

Shortly after the video was uploaded to Facebook, it was picked up by World Star Hip Hop and has been viewed 962,561 times since being posted last Sunday.

  No, but the “adult” in the room took a swing at the POS. Had he backed off after the kid shoved him, gone through proper channels and done the right thing rather than chase the kid and escalate the situation he’d still have his job and my support.

  You might be a teacher? Ever wonder why teachers have no authority in their own classroom anymore? Ever wonder why parents have little respect for their kids teacher nowadays? Teachers have been turned into geldings by the very system you would have this teacher run to. In my opinion mixed gender schools are a failure. Boys need to be raised and disciplined by Men. The only time a mom raises good sons is when she disciplines like a Man. as always IMO

  As a retired part time, substitute middle school teacher, I have only one thing to say…
  Get your kids out of public school now (especially in big cities)! Occasional violence is the least scary thing going on in our public schools. Our universities are turning out liberal, socialist, brain dead teachers who are lead with a ring through their nose by the NEA union. These indoctrination centers are destroying our country. Think I’m over stating the problem? Have you visited your kids classroom for a day lately? ..rf

In ancient times – in the 60′s – when we were in school and had a substitute teacher come in to the classrooom – we KNEW we’d better watch ourselves very carefully. Because if when the teacher came back the next day and heard ANYTHING went wrong, or if ANYONE was disrespectful – he or she would DOUBLE the homework. And being in that classroom would not be a pleasant experience for anyone in there. And if there was anyone who caused a problem with the substitute (which rarely happened), that student would be given nothing by **** by everyone else! My my, how times change!

  I remember those days also. And you could joke around with the substitutes and get them off track so that the lesson plan fell short of the Math Test or other item that they were tasked with completing unless it was just to study which was most of the time because the regular teacher wanted to give the test and be there to catch cheaters…

First off, I think the school is correct on firing the teacher, and expelling the student. The teacher is an adult, and it is his job to lead by example. I’d like to know who invaded whos private space….getting up in each others face. If it was the teacher, he was wrong first on that account. The student (being the “immature” person does the shoving and stepped back. This is when he should have been ordered out of the classroom….and then expelled for putting his hands on the teacher. Instead the teacher reacts aggression with aggression which makes him guilty as well. Dont get me wrong, I do feel for the teacher, but he was wrong there. What disgusts me more then anything is that this kid will end up being a burden on taxpayers number one….and the laughter in the classroom during the altercation. There is a lack of disrespect in the whole classroom. I can imagine the percentage of these young adults being a burden with unwed mothers, imprisoned fathers….God help us if we don’t reign in these young people and start teaching morality and respect.

  That may have worked 20yrs ago but now, there will be NO discipline unless the teacher give sit out. He has the right to defend himself and being a teacher does not mean you give up that right.
  Would you bet your life if the teacher called the principal after the kid pushed him, the kid would be punished? No, he would not. Then the teacher would have the punk back in the classroom even less likely to be good and probably start antagonizing the teacher. If the teachers are going to bet fired anyhow, if the kid starts it, they need to beat them half to death. Self-defense.

  I am very confused here. First you think that he teacher is at fault but then you make the statements that you wish that yo knew all the details of what caused the fight. Had the teacher stood still and blocked the student’s blows then he would have been in the right and should not be subject to firing. However, since he took after the kid he crossed the line. Had he stood his ground and not chased after the kid he could have filled assault charges against the kid.

Personally, I think this teacher deserves a medal.

Many kids and adults I have in my classes are so disrespectful. They talk in class and get angry when I ask them to stop. I get lip and excuses. They feel it is their social hour. I tell them this is not so and so’s social time, this is my classroom and I have the floor. If they don’t like those terms, there is the door. Many learn from that, so are still clueless. I am not there to entertain them, I am there to teach them. If you don’t want to learn don’t be here.

Do you remember how we used to act when we had a substitute 20 years ago? Well, that’s how the classrooms are NOW with the regular teacher! If you haven’t been in a school for the past 15 years or so, you’d be absolutely SHOCKED at what is considered “acceptable behavior” today.

How far have they come since the civil rights movement, the only race of people that digress when handed everything without earning it, and we have allowed them to dictate our culture by dumming down everything from education , music,dress etc not to mention loss of liberty due to PC starting with what you can say partaining to blacks dont think the this race will ever advance given what history teaches, amazing what the last 4 yrs under our post racial potus has wrought on this country and the world, God help us!

We’ve traded tried and true standards in for equality for all. I’ll take standards anyday, equality can then follow. For some this makes no sense because for the past 30 plus years, equality has been the main focus in society while all along letting standards and matters of character fall by the wayside or demean them in an effort to cause the lines to be blurred on purpose between learned values, morals and standards thus allowing everyone to be on the same darn playing field. Instead we should have allowed for everyone to catch up on their own efforts instead of dumbing down the rest of society so no catching up would be required. As a poor lower class White person, I know what its like to be at the bottom of the White led social class, but I made every effort to better myself through hardwork, commitment, character refinement etc. Now a days, one does not need to take any effort to reform oneself to move ahead. This is where we are today. The student FEELS like he is equal to the teacher who is older, maybe wiser, definitely educated and so forth. Equality tells us we are not to be in our place, we are to assert ourselves under all situations as equals. I can tell you this kid and his classmates are not my equals and may never be, thats up to them. Equality cannot be handed out, like self esteem it must be earned everyday. I will never accept someone just because they breath as my equal, inturn I will not turn them down if they honestly need help.

He is a grown man standing toe to toe with a little kid whom he outweighs by fifty pounds at least.
He had an opportunity to stand tall and set an example about how to react when confronted with anger but instead chose to go gangsta’ and keep it real.

I don’t know…no sound…but that teacher didn’t appear to be swinging at the boy. He may have only been chasing him out or possibly trying to grab him. Who knows…the kid shouldn’t have laid hands on the teacher in any event.
