UPDATE: Mass. Women Fired for Flipping Off the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Lindsey Stone & Friend Find Themselves Unemployed After Posting Controversial Arlington Cemetery PhotoFacebook

TheBlaze’s Erica Ritz on Tuesday asked whether Lindsey Stone and her friend should be fired for flipping off the the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Stone’s employer, Living Independently Forever (LIFE), answered her question: Yes.

(Facebook)

“We wish to announce that the two employees recently involved in the Arlington Cemetery incident are no longer employees of LIFE. Again, we deeply regret any disrespect to members of the military and their families,” the group said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

LIFE plans to delete all comments on its Facebook wall pertaining to the unfortunate incident, Fox News reports.

“We appreciate your concern and understanding as we focus on the care of our community,” the organization said.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this story, here’s a quick refresher from Miss Ritz:

Lindsey Stone is seen either yelling or pretending to yell, while giving the middle finger near a sign that asks for “silence and respect.” Her co-worker reportedly took the photo.

According to CBS Boston the image sparked thousands of comments, and while Stone has since deleted the photo and her relevant tweets, she wrote this in response to the initial fury:

Unsurprisingly, that post did little to calm emotions.

Within the past 24 hours there appears to have been a huge resurgence in interest in Stone’s photo, and a Facebook page called “Fire Lindsey Stone” has gotten more than 5,000 “likes.”

Hundreds of angry commenters have also posted on LIFE’s Facebook page, asking why they are continuing to employ such disrespectful individuals.

[…]

One woman commented on LIFE’s page that she doubts Stone and her friend truly “meant no disrespect” in flipping off the Tomb of the Unknowns.  Since they appear to have no courtesy for the grief of those who have lost a loved one in the armed forces, she continued, perhaps they need to be taught a far less painful lesson, but a lesson nonetheless.

“I respectfully request you allow them to experience the grief of sudden unemployment,” she wrote, before complimenting the photos of the facility.

It looks like that one commenter got her wish.

      To CanadaRocks,

People in the Tea Party would never, ever disrespect our servicemen and women, dead or alive. It’s not in their nature. He’s making that conclusion based on behavior we have all witnessed by liberals. You know, spitting on soldiers during the vietnam conflict, letting them die in Benghazi, etc. It’s an easy conclusion to come to in America because we see our armed forces disrespected time and time again by liberals. Conservatives here tend to support our troops to the bitter end, regardless of the conflicts they are involved in (by order of our …wonderful…..government).

      Hope this helps, Cheers!

Trail_jumper. I appreciate your post. Finally no one calling me a leftard or other liberal insults. I do agree that when your service people are concerned there really arent that many people that show respect more for them than the tea party. My point was to illustrate that making a comment about obama when there is no evidence at all to support the fact they are actually obama supporters is irresponsible and contributes to the fact that that is why cons are painted with the same brush. Vietnam was 45 years ago and was a war america had no right being in. Why those people chose to get to the soldiers, and spit on them is stupid. many of whom were drafted against there will. That is what angers me about it. They had no choice to be there and should have had the entire country’s empathy. But recklessly saying someone is this or that with no proof makes your base look foolish just as the hippies during the nam war was. Not all libs are idiots and neither are all cons but we treat them all like the extremists in their group. The same way blaze readers paint all muslims as radical murderers.

      Canada,

I’m not really a name caller. I come here for good info (usually weeks before the MSM even mentions it) and the commentary which is usually hilarious or insightful (or a combination of both). I read your posts on previous stories and you seem to be someone who thinks through things and doesn’t jump to conclusion unless you have the info to go on.
Being ex-military, I do find things like this story really irritating, and you’re right about the vietnam vets. They shouldn’t have been targeted by anyone. When the big dog tells you to go somewhere and fight, you go. It’s that simple.
I have plenty of liberal friends and I enjoy their take on things. The conservative friends I have I have more in common with but there are things in either camp I disagree with, and things I agree with. That’s normal for everyone who’s looking at things with a little bit o’ wisdom as far as I’m concerned.
As for the muslim thing, I haven’t seen all the Blaze readers thinking that all muslims are radical murderers. I do know why a lot of them think that way, and it’s because they’ve never talked with anyone from those countries that have come here so they can live their lives without being killed or injured because they choose to worship differently than other muslims in their home country. They are as patriotic about America as I am. I love them for that.
      Anyway, happy (American) thanksgiving!
      TJ.

Thanks trail_jumper. I completely agree with you. It annoys me to no end how idiotic both sides are sometimes. I used to post on huffpo but i mean… Well a lot of them are so far gone with their selective hearing and reading i stopped altogether. It drove me nuts reading about how stupid romney is. That was obviously a biased comment because although he may say stupid things sometimes he is far from a stupid man. His priorities and knowledge on certain things may have been lacking but what did obama know about everything when he started campaigning in 2007? Potus is a job where learning on the job is just a part of the deal. I felt the states are screwed either way. Not because one choice was the same as the other. But rather because the hardcore base they needes to satisfy were either far left or right. What sunk romney was the social issues and the nuts in the senate and house. How anyone can think that forcing a rape victim to carry a child after is beyond me but being an atheist allows me to discount the religious argument. I know that if it was my daughter that child would not get past the fetal stage. Then on the left they talked about the financials which killed it for me. I believe whole heartedly in fiscal prudence and responsibility. Thank god we have a 3 party system here in canada. Good way to keep everyone in check.

Happy thanksgiving to you and your family and friends and much respect for serving your country. The right needs morre thinkers like you.

I don’t smoke any more either but I do miss those clouds of cigarette smoke in the restaurant- and just being able to light one up to make the food come faster… :) Aaah, the good ol’ days…

The politically correct can all just go straight to hell without passing go. But wow lady; you gotta know the difference between authority and life blood. Perhaps these events will aid in rebuilding that critical facility of discernment. They are only able to do that due to the luxuries that we enjoy due to capitalism and our military. Fools like Lindsey have no clue how they enjoy the lifestyle they do. I suggest she be sentenced to 10 years of caring for wounded military folks that have lost lives, limbs, and families to protect her freedom to be shockingly insensitive and destructive.

When I visited the Tomb of the Unknown, the guard had to admonish the audience to show some respect. Many of the youths don’t have any respect for anybody or themselves. The American symbols of the pre-Obama era will gradually become denigrated and reviled. The symbols of the New America will be determined by the dominate religion, ethnic group and culture.

Hey FlashRiver, no one’s first amendment right was violated. She exercised it. The government did not arrest her, and imprison her. You cannot, however, withhold that same right of others who wish to speak our disapproval–including the right of the administrators of a private company, who have a fiduciary duty to do the what is in the best interest of the other employees and the shareholders / owners. If an employee acts out in such a public manner, there may be public backlash. That backlash may hurt the image of the company the person works for, and hurt business. Who wants to send their handicapped child to be under the care and custody of people like this? Do ya think ya get it now…?

These creepy obamites have been hiding behind the bully shield, while insulting all our good American traditions. 30 years ago they would have had their ass kicked, then and there. Despicable products of our dumbed down, USA hating, homosexual, feminist, communists, brainwashing, educational complex. Home school!! Save your children.

The level of disrespect and irresponsibility shown by the two women is not worthy of a job working with the disabled, PERIOD!

Even the woman’s facebook posted excuse, “challenging authority in general”, with it’s rebellious attitude is not worthy of keeping a job where she is responsible for the care of the disabled. What employer wants an employee with an attitude like that? This deal entails much more than just the insensitivity, offensiveness and disrespect shown at the memorial, (as if that weren’t enough). She did it while being payed to be a responsible caretaker of 40 ‘residents’ on a field trip. There is no excuse for that.

How old are these women anyway?!

She “obviously” does not qualify to care for disabled aka vulnerable people. So who was caring for her charges while 2 of the chaperones were off “challenging authority”? Bragging about smoking next to a non-smoking sign the day before? So she does this all the time? What has she done to those poor vulnerable people relying on her for their care when she looks for every opportunity to challenge authority? Maybe not feed them, or allow them to injure themselves, who knows! If that company hires people like those 2 females (I won’t call them ladies) I would never trust them with the care of a family member!

This is the problem with social media and comment trolls, I see people getting upset by the supposed disrespect but if I may for a moment…What she was doing was just trying to recreate a funny photo..it’s kind of an internet joke, like other internet memes.. the idea behind these photos is (in a joking manner) “I do what I want”..it’s just meant to be satirical like someone taking a picture on grass next to a “stay off the grass photo” I have very little doubt she even took a second to read the rest of the sign before posting it. If she did mean to be disrespectful to those buried there, then I would agree she is a D’bag but after seeing her comment it is apparent there wasn’t malicious intent. As for firing her..get real you retarded comment trolls. What about the freedom of speech?? It works both ways…I get so sick of one side citing it over the other but when something offends you…where do you get off saying someone should be fired etc…? It’s pitiful really. I read offending things in the news everyday and wish they would fire the entire msnbc network or maybe we could start executing the large number of uninformed people that seem to always inhabit protests.Anyways if you are interested in what I was talking about here is a link to a bunch of dumb photos of people “doing what they want”…it’s just satirical humor

There are some things in this world that are sacred. This is one. You can go and attend your pass/fail, everyone gets a trophy, It’s ok to spit at a priest, lifestyle with your peer review, useful idiots, but there are millions of people who still regard many things as sacred. We get it, you and these cretin girls, could give a crap about anything but your own selfish opinions. Keep up the bad behavior, and sad excuses. You can say whatever you want ,but that doesn’t mean everyone has to like it or stick around to listen to it IE Freedom of speech ,not the consequences of that speech. Now it is wrong to have started a witch hunt and to pretty much have ruined the life of one of them since any major employer nowadays does a google search on you.

I’m in agreement that firing her was inappropriate, unless she was doing this on her employer’s time. However, public scorn and derision should be heaped upon her for her obvious lack of thought and respect for the Tomb. That being said, I really don’t have any sympathy for her being fired either. when she posed for this photo I am sure she thought she was being funny, outspoken, and witty. She and others like her tend to shoot for the low hanging fruit, like smoking next to the sign, where they are pretty sure there will be no consequences. OOPSIE!

Had she not posted this on her personal facebook page, her employer and NONE of you would know about this. How many times have WE done something so STUPID in our lives that you got lucky no one saw you do it?

This was stupid. I do not defend her acts as they are disrespectful, but still not grounds to be fired. She got fired because of a MOB that descended on the company. She got fired due to PUBLIC PRESSURE. No one, no group, should have that power over something as pathetic as this failed attempt at a meme.

What you are really ‘separated’ from is reality and the whole story, evidently.
She pulled this stunt while on the job being payed to be a responsible caretaker of 40 ‘residents’ on a field trip to the memorial. This, at the very least, tarnishes the reputation of the non-profit she worked for. And calls into question her maturity level for taking care of the disabled. She was on the job when she did this. That gives her employer the right to fire her sorry, self admitted “douchebag” self.

Maybe if posted enough times, it will sink in.

      @ ThunderclapNewman & Elia

My reference, in regards to freedom of speech, was aimed at the people calling for her head over something like this. In other words what I was attempting to say is..something along the lines of “Where do you people get off running your trash talk at me about some Obama Plantation blah blah but in the same baited breath call for all of this punitive action to come down on this woman for a dumb attempt at humor?”
Again the comment troll violation comes from the supposition of things I had not written. You seem to judge me for my take on her employers decision to terminate. I did not even comment on her firing. As far as that goes..I support the LIFE foundation for their decision. It’s up to the employer and if all the negative press gives them a bad name and affects their business then so be it, it’s a smart decision to part ways with their employee. That’s between them and theirs as far as I am concerned..I think it sucks this woman has to lose her job over something so silly.
As for taking a class on Civics..sorry I missed that one,I wasted those college years on things like science and technology…you know ..tangible skills in today’s world. Guess that makes me somewhat less than you for not majoring in political sciences…see that’s me supposing that you are some stuck up poly-sci major without knowing anything about you!! “Freedom of speech” doesn’t give people the right to say anything without consequences, that isn’t what the constitution says. It says that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech …” It says nothing about an employer deciding to act based on what someone says or does in their free time and personal lives (as long as those actions don’t relate to union organizing, which is protected speech). The First Amendment says nothing about a lack of consequences for statements made (which is why you’ll get arrested for yelling “fire” in a crowded theater that’s not on fire).

This woman chose to act in a way that is clearly protected by the Constitution – no government official arrested her for her behavior, which would have been a violation of her constitutional protections – but she also acted in a way that many (including her employer) would deem irresponsible.

There are consequences for acting irresponsibly. One of those consequences is the risk of losing your job if your employer doesn’t approve of what you say, especially if what you says rebounds negatively on your employer (as this certainly did).

She’s free to make an ass of herself, and she exercised that freedom. Her employer was free to fire her for making an ass of herself in a way that hurt his business, and he exercised that freedom.

I don’t get your beef, Punkmoocow – she made her bed, and now she’s sleeping in it. Think of it as evolution in action!

Question 1. Should Jimbo and co-worker be fired?

The lesson is…not at Arlington. Spin it. Revel in the theories and widen while you ride the fence. Whatever you want. Just not at Arlington. Real sorry to hurt your endless personal feelings. I have read a few post from (seperated) and I think you are suppose to pronounce it with a lisp. Are you pronouncing (seperated) with a lisp? Are you angry that (seperated) comes with an obligatory lisp? Should you postulate endlessly and theorize on the endless characters with which to mimic (seperated)s lisp?

This is a hard lesson between right and wrong. Obviously they drifted to the wrong side of their antics. There antics were in defiance to the message on the sign and not to the soldiers. How many of us have defied a sign even if it was only for a few minutes in your youth? I know I have, but not to the extent these two girls did. Did their antics warrant unemployment? That is up to the employer and they felt yes. The girls learned, although fun at the time, the consequences were not fun. Unless you nip this in the bud right away, this type of behavior would continue from these two girls. Next time it may not be so innocuous.

Lesson: Don’t take pictures and then post them on the Internet.

How is that up to the employer? If half the **** we do on the weekend, getting wasted at bars, acting stupid, most of America would be unemployeed. Employers are not to regulate what an employee does in their spare time. Unless she was an employee at the cemetery and knew better, but otherwise, I don’t think her employer should have fired her. If they did, she better have gotten a huge severance pay.

This photo was taken on a company trip with 47 coworkers and several donors. It was NOT on her “free time”.

On duty? If she was walking with a disabled child, teacher the child how to walk on her own, and she decided to make that gesture, then yes, as she caused a dereliction of duty to create the photo. She’s obviously not on company time when she took that photo…. and no logo of the company is to be seen.

When I use to work at a car dealership, we brought in a hot dog stand. It had a picture of giant hotdogs on the side of the stand. One of my buddies thought it’d be cool to stand there and pretend one of the dogs was his penis. Posted it on facebook, didn’t realize he was wearing a company shirt and showed the dealership logo in the background. Embarrasing, yup. Did the company find out? Yup. They told him to take it down and not to do it again. And he hasn’t….. we do dumb things sometimes, but this dumb thing she did shouldn’t have gotten her fired….

Your friend was lucky. His stupid actions were grounds to fire him. The company decided not to, which is up to the company. This company decided not to be so lenient. Everyone does dumb things, but she was dumb at work, being the big difference. She could be a nazi in her spare time and many companies won’t care as long as your not a nazi AT WORK.

As it has been pointed out, this woman was on company time when she did this. However, even if she was not “on the clock” the company would still be in the right here.

Yes, what you do on your own time should be your own business. Until you do it while wearing a company logo. Or in a company car. Or until you post it on the Internet. On Facebook. With your real name attached to the account. With your place of business listed. If your stupid actions affect only yourself, then who cares? But when the blowback lands all over the company you work for, expect consequences.

      Aside: {I am going to reveal myself as an old fart here, but has no one taught this generation that putting your real name on the Internet is a bad, bad idea? Let alone your personal details with pictures? Back when AOL and Prodigy were the $hit, the first rule was never use your real name in your screen name. Even in they days of CB radio, you used a handle, never your real name. Now people plaster their real name everywhere. It is the most insane thing you could do, yet in the age of Facebook it is commonplace.}

The point is, stupid pranks, inside jokes, and crazy weekend antics make great stories for your friends. Keep them between you and your friends.

It is a thing called “Personal Responsability.” Personal responsability to do the right thing. That is what true freedom is about. It is not about hate and disrespect to others and others’ ways because we can. All of us could use more personal responsability in our day-to-day lives – even you.

You’re as much as “Soldier” as Obama was born in Selma, Alabama.
You’re as much as “Soldier” as Elizabeth Warren is a Red Indian.
You’re as much as “Soldier” as Rigoberta Menchu was oppressed by capitalism.

Like some others said in their comments to the original story, she apparently has difficulty with the definition of disrespect. Maybe she isn’t really yelling in the picture, but that gesture she’s giving is VERY disrespectful. She’s got a right to her freedom of expression, but she seems a little surprised at others using their freedom of expression to let her have it for using such poor judgement. If she thought she wouldn’t catch hell for this, she’s an idiot. Your employer has the right to fire you if you make the company look bad. I wasn’t really in favor of her being fired, I figured all the negative feedback that came her way would be enough to make her regret her mistake.

Not every knucklehead’s actions can be attributed to their parents. Her parent’s (parent, adoptive parents, guardian) may have well taught her manners, respect, proper etiquette in social settings, good judgement and having some class.

Look around and see how many good parent’s children have gone astray due to no fault of the parents and ask yourself why ??
