UN Climate Chief: Hurricane Sandy a ‘Wakeup Call’ on Climate Change

With President Obama’s re-election now a lock, international pressure is beginning to ratchet up on the President to abandon what small vestige of political self-preservation he’d managed and go full Leftist.

The latest instance comes from U.N. Climate Chief Christiana Figueres of Costa Rica, who recently characterized Hurricane Sandy as a “wakeup call” for the United States on climate change and lamented our apparent unwillingness to begin penalizing carbon emissions with zeal.

The Washington Examiner’s Beltway Confidential blog explains:

“Yes, I certainly do think that this is yet another wake-up call,” Figueres said of Hurricane Sandy to Yale Environment 360 in an interview published by The Guardian.”I did hear President Obama say quite categorically in his acceptance speech that he is not going to have a future that is threatened by increasing warming . . . I do think that this mirrors the growing awareness in the United States. So I do think that Sandy has contributed to this. Is it the tipping point? That remains to be seen.”

Figueres also spoke if international frustration with the United States for failing to sign onto UN global warming initiatives such as the Kyoto Protocol.

“[I]f the United States does not strengthen its participation in the global climate regime under the newly re-elected president I think there will be increased frustration with the United States,” she said.

Cap and Trade, President Obama’s previous preferred method of dealing with climate change, has been stalled in Congress pretty much since the start of his first term, and Obama likely lacks the political capital to pass it, even in the aftermath of his election. This instance of gloating by the U.N. is deeply unlikely to change that. In fact, Chief Figueres might have given the President’s critics more ammunition if he pursues the policy in the face of this kind of pressure. The idea of the President bowing to criticism from foreign entities could be a potent political toxin, even for a lame duck.

Hurricane Sandy is a wake up to Newtons Law that an object in motion…IONs, can be boosted by miniscule amounts of pulse energy to create plasma that influences magnetic fields in which create high pressure systems that steer the jet stream. It is called Tesla Technology that has been weaponized. Wake up idiots…the proof is in the propaganda…Combat Climate Change!   This is a CBC expose on HAARP. I’m not saying it’s real, but at the same time there is certainly enough evidence to suggest it’s at least plausible.

  You should seriously read the above links before you continue to mock people concerned over weather modification, at least do your own homework first as it’s obvious you are the uneducated person in this matter. Of the sources above: One is the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company), the UN, as well as the EU parliament. These are hardly your typical sources of fringe conspiracy theories.

  Whats the big deal? We’ve had hurricanes here in the NE before. Hazel in ’55, the ’62 NE’er that was as bad for the Jersey coast (that one wiped out whole sections of towns. We had a late March snow-storm that had my family farm out of electric for a week.
  But nowdays, with political agends’s to manipulate events to their advantage, everything has to be caused by something manmade.

  Good job! We must remember Global Warming was created in the Communist one world United Nations. Their “report” was sanitized of any doubters among the thousands of mainly non climatologists. And the fact the UN exempts so called emerging countries like Communist China from the clean up process tells the tale. The whole effort is to raise the energy costs and reduce the power of America and other western nations. Close down the UN in the USA and cut our support costs to the UN.

By coincidence I WORKED ON a related satellite-based energy program in the ’70′s (have an Ms degree in Aero/Astro Engineering) in which we considered a gigawatt solar satellite in geosync orbit, beaming energy down via microwave to receiving stations in the desert. The program was scrapped for a variety of real-world reasons.

  Lamarr01 Nice link. Anyone with a brain should easily question the motive of the UN and the so called CO2 hoax. That makes zero sense. The weather is being manipulated through radio pulse weapons and the UN knows it. There are so many people that are making their living on this geoengineering hoax that they do not realize that they are actually contributing to the cause. The term Climate Change is so broad that it is clearly a propaganda device to get people that have little or no interest in understanding how weather is naturally made to buy into the hoax that CO2 emissions is causing these strange phenomenon started as soon as their efforts began to create this great wealth distribution scheme. Climate Change…as far as the way AL GORE and the UN put it is a hoax but the weather and the earthquakes are not. The weather is purposely being manipulated and there are consequences unintended in the use of such technology. For the record, I do understand what is going on in great detail. Even though I am an engineer, people do not need that background to know the basics of how weather is naturally formed and to understand that CO2 emissions are not a contributing factor on the scale that they want people to believe.   UN backed scientists are OPENLY attempting several lines of geoengineering research in which they plan to “fix” our atmosphere from hypothetical damage. These people are extremely dangerous because their speculative research entails them to tinkering with our atmosphere. When asked about the dangers, they scoff, claiming they know exactly what they’re doing, in spite of the fact that nobody has any experience in what they’re attempting.
  
  These facts are madness. Therefore, I don’t totally discount wild sounding conspiracies about geoengineering. These people are capable of anything, except (I predict) taking responsibility for their failures.

  look up agenda 21, read the whole thing. after you take notes and can get a grasp of that reality, now look up the next mini ice age that’s due to hit home anytime now. Now think real hard for a minute about what a mini ice age would do to our world. It would wipe a buttload of people off the map, fersure so why don’t they want global warming? that’s our only possible defense in my eyes, unless they want all those people gone. i got off the climate change movement, when i found out that methane(cow flatulence being the biggest leading cause of GW) causes more pollution than CO2. Not only that but that one single volcano(not even a super one) would cause more pollution than we have throughout our existence. You see guys, not only is global warming such a non-issue that it’s laughable. But the very idea that WE are the problem is what’s the biggest thing to worry about with the agenda. They finally found a way to control us, the UN makes us a threat to everyone’s existence. You have to look it up and keep an open mind, everyone i have gotten to look it up have been shocked, dismayed, angry, some half-expected it.   when did they start measuring the glacier?* If they haven’t been studying that glacier for a 100 or more years, then their science can’t fully explain anything. Our earth has maintained a healthy 1 degree loss or gain every hundred years, we would have to have been measuring the glacier during the hundred years prior to see how it fair’s for the next hundred years. All their research is based on speculation and not nearly enough variables to take into account. Sry but I don’t believe we KNOW how small the glacier got last hundred year temperature cycle, so why should we assume all these scientists are right that it’s BAD. It could have been HUGE, but who the hell is gonna measure a big block of ice? (lol i know they actually used many means possible to make maps back in the day, mapmakers actually made very accurate representations of our lands on maps. they used many different devices, some prolly used measuring sticks. But jees i just can’t imagine that many people wanting to do that for a living, would they stand up after a few reachable measurements? or would they crawl the whole way, kinda like that foreign guy that roled all over his country. Now the sundials and stuff like that seems funner, sure beats seemingly perpetually sitting and standing to me! but do we have accurate measurements of the glaciers from various different years in the 19th century?   Ugh sry for the lengthiness(that’s my word, not websters)) I can never convey truly how i feel in a few words.(type-talk makes you have to explain everything about what you say) still trying to get used to it… Sooo I want everyone to know that i believe that human beings could do a lot of good to our planet, since it’s not our pollution that’s the problem. In my mind it would be cool if a good amount of people just set a little bit of their time away to help keep the earth’s features intact. For instance, We used to have some pristine beaches(;D toby) until they built a wall on the shoreline. umm now the beach is ugly, all that work god did to make you noobs an amasing place to hang out at and you pretty much shoved a wrench into the erosion process. srsly though, man has come up with some stupid ideas. but if you build a worthless wall that makes your beach turn into what looks like a giant lake, get rid of the stupid wall. don’t act like it was a good idea, years have passed and you have messed up something that was designed by the greatest mind there is. My lord said he will destroy those who destroy the earth, so i think it’s about time we start talking about what we can do to reverse the bad ideas degrading a cool lookin planet. global warming is a crapshute, but man has done some dumb things to literally destroy something awsome in nature. let’s take care of the earth, but don’t make it into something that it’s not.

  Hope this doesn’t post twice, not sure what just happened. The program just went off a few minutes ago on the History Channel. Didn’t expect to see it run again since ’07 since they took that huge leap of faith for their now Global Whining stance. Watch them for this to run again though, it is interesting since it does talk about how the earth and in particular the area of the United States that has frozen and warmed several times in many millions of years. “How The Earth Was Made” aired first 16 September 2007, so catch if you can.

People seem to forget the 700 nuclear weapons we have exploded in the upper atmosphere to see how it would affect the earth’s magnetic field. How about the 2000 warheads we have detonated under ground? When I was a teenager, the environmentalist wackos claimed that the aerosol cans (fluorocarbons) we were spraying caused a “hole in the ozone layer.” They predicted an impending ice age. Many so-called scientists agreed. Now that the natural changes in global climate has changed in the other direction, we are being pressured to do things like decrease carbon emissions which will have no effect on the climate. I’m a scientist and this is unfounded, political manipulation. It’s just plain depressing to see how many people are being fooled. Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

  My first experience with Global Warming was to witness the peer pressure. I was skeptical of the theory before I ever read about it simply because I witnessed the politics.

  In any case, Sandy was not an unusual weather event. Also climate is about long trends, and no reputable scientist would claim that a single event meant anything in climatology terms.
  
  A Gore is not a climate scientist, nor is he any sort of scientist. Al Gore is a politician, and the UN IPCC is an organization run by bureaucrats and controlled by politicians. And sadly, may universities have been corrupted with huge amounts of funding to justify a political agenda.

  Never in the history of a hurricane in NYC has SEA WATER flooded those building lobbies.
  Have boats in docks been floated and left on TOP of other boats.
  Have hundreds of home in the Rockaways and on Staten Island been condemned and scheduled for demolition.

NYC has existed for a nano second in comparison. It is quite probable that storms of this magnitude and greater have occurred thousands of times if not more. Especially since the scientific community that has declared itself to be Al Gore select calls carbon dioxide the be all end all greenhouse gas. That has apparently been around for a while too. Oh yeah, dang I almost forgot, CH4. Those cow, all the way back to giant dinosaur farts. Hmmm, something else that has been around for a while too. Then since the beginning of man kind there have been all of those other wood and variety of other oil type fires for various reasons. I also suppose that none of our volcanoes ever burned off any fossil fuels either? I suppose that if you are truly that concerned, you might consider steps that will end you carbon footprint.

  Year after year there are hurricanes ,and very powerful ones at that, which never make landfall. For two years in a row, 2 hurricanes took the same path up the Atlantic coast and hit New York City.. It might serve us well to consider that an Act of God caused this and not some stupid idea of climate change.

  New Jersey – 2 earthquakes today…one in Camden County and one in Berger County. Small but felt locally. Hurricane Sandy followed by nor’easter. Last summer – earthquake and hurricane Irene. I don’t know what’s causing it but the weather IS changing. I grew up in NJ and this is bizarre weather for the state, no question.

  You are right… the weather is changing. It’s always in constant change from decade to decade and century to century. The weather today is not the same as it was in 1980, and 1980 is not the same as it was in 1880 or 1780.
  
  (the increase of available information today – like the Internet – has also helped fuel is notion that things are worse than they were in the past … used to be a severe storm would get a paragraph on the back page in the newspaper – today, with 24hr news, we are bombarded with the smallest change in weather)
  
  The question really isn’t IF the weather is changing… it’s WHO is to blame. Many of us, like me, who are skeptics of “man-made” global warming don’t deny that things are changing. We are merely saying that much of the data suggests it’s natural.
  
  You have to remember, setting the bible aside and scientifically speaking, the human species has only been around on this rock for a blink of a blink of an eye in the history of our planet. 500,000 years ago the world was a much different place.
  
  Besides – increased temperatures has many positive side effects that people like ‘justafacts’ fail to realize. (lengthened growing seasons, increased areas of land to grow on, more vegetation overall, etc, etc, etc)

  Why do you assume many people and I don’t understand that a hotter climate is great for other vegetation and other species like cold blooded animals? I understand that. I also undertand that a hotter climate is bad for the human species. The human species and many other mammals today have evolved in a climate that is just right for us. A changing climate is bad because we are not used to it to such a hot climate :
  
  1. A warmer world will likely have longer and more intense heat waves, like the one that wrapped much of the U.S. and Canada in 2006. Four hundred and fifty people died during that heat wave,
  
  2. climate change is likely to bring more intense weather events, including floods, hurricanes and even snowstorms.
  
  3. as temperatures and precipitation increase, mosquitoes may be able to spread further, putting more people at risk.
  
  4. Rising temperatures also mean rising pollen levels, which is bad news for millions of Americans who suffer from allergies.

During all the dormant hurricane seasons you never hear anything about climate change, and then when we finally get a decent storm the liberals who never let a good crisis go to waste, use it as an opportunity to push larger government and more taxes.

Wake up call to show that that the whole climate change farce has jumped every shark in the ocean at once. Every Hurricane from here on out will be caused by climate change of some sort, even those well within the hurricane season and well within the 1 to 3 category. Even a category 1 that does not hit land was caused by climate change.

  Atheist secular people can not develop any Moral understanding about what is going on…never will. They can’t put 2 and 2 together and get a right answer…..They are deluded and working with diminished capacity…..Their carnal concerns have killed their souls and left waste, what virtue they may have known. Without faith, they live in fear. It’s all they have, and it is there in every facet of their lives. Watch ‘em, and you can see it in their eyes and you can hear it in their rhetoric.

  Careful. According to this wizard and her ilk, “bull” is yet one more factor leading to man-caused climate change. At some point, I’m sure there will be a move to criminalize beef cattle… for our own good, of course.
  Here that, Costa Ricans. One of you prime exports is a global warming/climate change no-no.
