Hamas No. 2: ‘No Way’ We Are Going to Stop ‘Obtaining and Manufacturing’ Weapons During Cease-Fire

(TheBlaze/AP) — Gaza’s Hamas will not stop arming itself because only a strong arsenal, not negotiations, can extract concessions from Israel, the No. 2 in the Islamic militant group told The Associated Press in an interview Saturday.

The comments by Moussa Abu Marzouk– just three days after the worst bout of Israel-Hamas fighting in four years– signal trouble ahead for Egyptian-brokered talks between the hostile neighbors on a new border deal.

Hamas demands that Israel and Egypt lift all restrictions on the movement of goods and people in and out of the Palestinian territory, which has been buckling under a border blockade since the Islamists seized the territory in 2007 and upped the amount of rocket attacks on Israel. The restrictions have been eased somewhat in recent years, but not enough to allow Gaza’s battered economy to develop, they say.

Israeli officials were not immediately available for comment Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. However, an Israeli security official said this week that Israel would likely link a significant easing of the blockade to Hamas’s willingness to stop smuggling weapons into Gaza and producing them there.

Abu Marzouk said Saturday that the group would not disarm, though, arguing that recent Palestinian history has shown that negotiations with Israel lead nowhere unless backed by force.

“There is no way to relinquish weapons,” Abu Marzouk said in his office on the outskirts of Cairo. “These weapons protected us and there is no way to stop obtaining and manufacturing them.”

Hamas’ founding charter calls for Israel’s destruction, but leaders of the group have also claimed they are ready for a long-term cease-fire with the Jewish state.

The group is believed to have amassed a large arsenal of thousands of rockets since Israel’s last military offensive in Gaza four years ago. Hamas has been smuggling weapons through tunnels under the border with Egypt, but also seems to have begun manufacturing longer-range rockets in Gaza.

During the latest round of fighting, Hamas fired Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets that came close to Israel’s heartland, including the cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for the first time. Israel warplanes pounded the tunnel area during the offensive to disrupt smuggling, and tunnel operators reported serious damage, but in the past were able to rebuild quickly.

Hamas used to be evasive about Iranian weapons support, but in recent days senior officials in the group have openly thanked Tehran. Gaza strongman Mahmoud Zahar told reporters on Saturday that he is confident that Iran will increase military and financial support to Hamas and the smaller militant group Islamic Jihad.

Iran and its regional rivals, the Sunni Muslim-led states in the Gulf, have been competing in recent months to lure Hamas into their respective camps. The top Hamas leader in exile, Khaled Mashaal, is being hosted by the Gulf state of Qatar, which has promised hundreds of millions of dollars for Gaza reconstruction.

Zahar said Saturday that Hamas is not beholden to anyone, but defended the group’s ties with Iran. “If they don’t like it, let them compete with Iran in giving us weapons and money,” he said in an apparent jab at the Gulf states.

Abu Marzouk, meanwhile, said Hamas would not stand in the way of a bid by its main political rival, internationally backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to seek U.N. recognition for a state of Palestine next week.

Abbas will ask the U.N. General Assembly to approve “Palestine” – made up of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, areas Israel captured in 1967 – as a non-member observer state.

Such a state is far from being established, but Palestinians hope U.N. recognition would affirm its future borders, to be used as a baseline once negotiations with Israel resume. Israel, while willing to cede some land, refuses with withdraw to the 1967 lines and opposes Abbas’ U.N. move as an attempt to bypass negotiations. Israel has moved half a million Israelis into settlements on war-won land.

Abu Marzouk says Abbas is wasting his time at the U.N.

“Hamas believes the General Assembly is not the one to create states,” he explained. “Occupation needs resistance, not negotiations.”

Israel and the West have shunned Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in shootings and bombings over the years, as a terror organization. However, Hamas officials believe the boycott is slowly eroding, pointing to U.S. support for the cease-fire deal brokered by Egypt and the ongoing indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Overall, Hamas leaders have claimed the group has emerged victorious from this round, noting that Israel did not make good on threats to send ground troops into Gaza. Israel says it has achieved its goal of halting rocket fire on Israel.

Abu Marzouk said the next round of indirect talks will take place in Cairo on Monday. He has not met his Israeli interlocutors, he said, but said they are security officials and experts on border arrangements.

Until late last year, most top Hamas leaders in exile were based in Syria, the Islamists’ main foreign backer in addition to Iran. However, Syrian President Bashar Assad’s brutal crackdown on a popular uprising there made Hamas’ alliance with the Damascus regime untenable.

Abu Marzouk, who has settled in a quiet Cairo suburb, said the follow-up talks with Israel have gone well so far.

In Gaza, residents said Saturday that Israel has already eased some restrictions.

Fishermen were able to sail six nautical miles out to sea, or double the previous limit, said Mahfouz Kabariti, head of the local fishermen’s association. “This is an opportunity and a chance for a better catch, though it is still a limited area,” said Kabariti, who represents some 3,500 fishermen.

Israeli navy boats have been enforcing a sea blockade in an attempt to prevent weapons smuggling to Gaza. The restrictions on fishermen have fluctuated over the years, linked to the ups and downs in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Meanwhile, some Gaza residents said they were able to enter an Israeli-enforced buffer zone on the Gaza side of the border Saturday with Israel without fear of being fired on.

On Saturday, 42-year-old farmer Nidal Abu Dakka said soldiers stood and watched as he and others moved close to the fence. In other border areas, residents said Hamas police kept them away.

An Israeli government spokesman said he was unaware restrictions had been eased. A defense official said the Israeli military was no longer enforcing the no-go zone, but reserved the right to act against suspicious people. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the issue with reporters.

Israel should take back Gaza and kick out those Hamas out of Israel or people like them. I pray for the Jewish people and Israel. I think, evil Bush talk to Israel by giving Gaza up back in the past. Israel should never give up Gaza.

    I’m reminded of Gold Maeir:

“The fighting will quit when the Palestinians love their children more than they hate Israel.”

That picture of the child is a perfect picture. They would rather hate, than let their children live. Because Israel will kill them. Not because Israel is bad, but because they will learn to hate… just like their parents.

Isn’t it so interesting how Morsi wants more power in his government while taking total control? Like everyone knew, he would do such as a Muslim Brotherhood leader! Once this takes place, it will more than likely mean he will collaborate with the Palestinians even more in taking over Israel.

There are some things in life you cannot trust and one of them is absolute power!

Our debt will be even worse off than ever before and then we will not have any way to keep peace in the free world!

Hamas and the vast majority of Palestinians are not interested in any type of peace with Jews in Israel. They believe there can only be peace when all the Jews are exterminated from the region. This is only a brief Hudna by these terrorist Jihads. As far as Palestinian civilian causalities go, all the bloodshed is on the hands of the cowardly Hamas terrorist who attack and then hide behind the women and children.

ONLY Peace will be “won” when either side is TOTALLY destroyed!! Israel has tried the “compromise” way that the UN so believes in and craves for BUT has and will always FAIL!!! Time for Israel to do what they do BEST and that is defeat arabs!!!

The cease fire is so counter productive and a roadblock to peace it’s really a shame, cruel really to prolong the inevitable war. It’s much more humane for the Israeli’s to quickly exterminate their subhuman problem permanently and end the suffering on both sides. You could view hamas or any other terrorist group as rabid dogs worthy of being put down because we all know they won’t stop killing innocent civilians and the only logical response for the Israeli’s is to eliminate all their enemies.

And this is surprising why? You DO know that it’s not as if ISRAEL shuts down its defense manufacturing industries (or the U.S. stops its arms trade with Israel) each and every time they negotiate a cease fire with the Palestinians, or anyone for that matter, right?

THIRD, you seem to be missing the point. The Israelis showed up ready to fight this skirmish that the “Palestinians” managed to get started. The IDF is prepared with their lines of communication. The Palestinians merely ran out of rockets while firing them from their school grounds, hospitals, and mosques. It is they who must demand a cease fire so they can regroup. Pretty neat, eh? They just had to whine loud enough and Hillary comes running with UN members and the world media hot on her heals and suddenly there is peace. What a farce…..as usual.

Being away from my computer for a few days, and, due to time constraints, not being able to watch TV news in NZ, I was stunned to find that Israel had capitulated. Yes, surrendered. Hoisted the white flag.

It is not as if every Israeli, from the prime minister down, does not clearly understand the situation. Mr Netanyahu’s own statement puts it perfectly:

“The truth is that if Israel were to put down its arms, there would be no more Israel. If the Arabs were to put down their arms, there would be no more war.”

A child in secondary school in any free country in the world would have predicted that Hamas would immediately begin to re-arm. And they are doing just that without even the slightest pretence of doing otherwise. Indeed they are boasting of it.

The said children in secondary school will, no doubt, make the additional prediction should they be asked; that the MB will attack again as soon as they feel that they are strong enough.

The MB is having trouble organising its client states onto a war footing, and they are therefore vulnerable at this moment. Clearly, the time to deal with their Hamas organisation was immediately.

Israel caved in to a vociferous minority, and taught the MB some important strategic lessons for free. Free, that is, when one considers that these savages place no real value on the lives of their women and children.

What on earth can Israel possibly be thinking…

      @ Upeople

There are many who, from the comfort and safety of their well removed living rooms and dinner parties, offer the MB the ideological succour that is so valuable to them.

I cannot help but feel that if you were to rent a living room in Israel in which to attend your computer, you might have a radically different point of view.

You could not get onto a bus with your children without wondering if the pregnant-looking woman boarding after you was carrying a cleverly concealed bomb.

You would resent the fact that your new country, Israel, is taking part of your taxes and supplying humanitarian aid to the citizens of your enemies, even as they try to kill you. And that your taxes further went to pay the salaries of Gazans, who are key to the infrastructure because the “government” spends all its money on terror.

You, as a decent human being, would grieve over the loss of innocent young arab lives while their leaders crow about their love of death.

And you would be convinced that this would persist until your new country fought back and scattered these savages, thus finally bringing peace and prosperity to the people that you wish to support in the first place.

You, my friend, seem to be lacking in empathy and clarity of thought. May I respectfully suggest that you do your own homework instead of contributing to the trendy cocktail circuit chatter.

Or should we, when we sign up, promise not to hold any but the prevailing point of view? But then what would be the point of commenting if we all agree with each other?

Nobody here expects not to be offended from time to time, and even trolls can, albeit rarely, offer a worthy point. We all occassionally disagree with the majority opinion on a subject (and are then forced to defend our view). This is a robust and stroppy site, and, in my humble opinion, most of the commenters are intelligent, forthright, and plain speaking.

You know, people can be persuaded by reasoned arguement. I have changed my view on a few matters after being involved in discussions here, and then thinking about it afterward. Most notably, I used to be fairly relaxed about abortion, believing that is was the woman’s body and therefore her prerogative. Now, after quite a few discussions on this site, I hold a very different view.

Patiently putting up reasonable opinions and supportive links can move people. Contemptuously tossing their opinions into the trash just p!sses them off. It certainly doesn’t change their mind.

As Netsurfer said; one cannot trust absolute power. Controlling people’s speech IS absolute power. That’s why the 1st Amendment is there, and why the 2nd Amendment is necessary to defend the first.

The 1st amendment is under constant attack. The most obvious recent antagonist is the UN, but Mr Obama is also circling the American people like a hyena, biting off as many bits of the 1st and 2nd Amendments as he is able to without getting politically injured.

It is a serious business, and a people should not become so unfamiliar with tyranny as to take their freedoms for granted.

I can’t even remember what I posted; however, I expect such behavior out of the Blaze because they are not interested in the truth only in promoting their extreme Zionist ideals without any balance whatsoever. It is they and many like them who have absolutely not empathy whatsoever for the Palestinian people.

I appreciate you calling them out even though I probably said something over the top.. I say stuff oftentimes to shock people and to attempt to stimulate them to think out of the box. I clearly understand and appreciate the problems which the Jews suffer on a daily basis but I don’t think the average American appreciates or comprehends whatsoever the difficulties which the Palestinians face.

In my opinion one can’t even begin to have a reasonable discussion on the topic without addressing the Authority by which the Jews took Palestine to begin with and whether or not it is legitimate. If it is then by the same token Mexico can take back TX and CA right?

Anyway I only seek balance in the Middle East discussion. I personally hate and despise Islam but I demand the truth and fairness in Media. I consider myself and complete neutral bystander on the matter but you point a much bigger issue imo and that is the restriction of speech and thought in America which should not be tolerated at all.

      @ upeopleneedtogetalife and NZkiwi,

I’m curious about something. Do you both fell that free speech means that you can say whatever you want to, whenever you want to and where ever you want to? Seriously.

I worked for a guy from Holland before who thought that. It also included freedom to do drugs. He used to sit us down every workday before the July 4th holiday and berate the US Constitution and Declaration of Independence. About 4 times a year his wife would visit and if we had pizza for lunch that day she would touch every slice of pizza twice. I finally said something about that and he got really mad.

He was OK with total free speech until someone said something derogatory to his wife. Like, “Would you please get your fat greasy fingers out of my pizza slices?”

Yes without question! Anything outside of threatening the life of another individual.. Meaning a serious threat. That was what the 1st amendment was put in the Bill of Rights for… Throughout history Kings and rulers have determined what is to thought about or spoken and our Founders in their Wisdom said here in America there would be no restrictions on speech or thought.

“Hamas will not stop arming itself” – anyone with half a brain knows the savages only use cease fires to re-group & re-arm. Israel, for political reasons, is coerced to allow this kind of BS, but at the same time it will politically strengthen their position when they finally sweep Gaza clean. May the God of Abraham dam islam.

      @ Lel

You may be right that Israel will have the moral high ground in the attack that is most certainly coming. However, that seems to me to be an extremely risky strategy.

They have, in this action, added no new friends to their list, and their enemies remain implacable.

The MB needs Israel as an ideological focus to unite the citizens of its client states. In this they continue to copy the strategies of Nazi Germany. History teaches that appeasement will not work against such evil, only the resolute uprooting of these savages will acheive the necessary result.

The longer that this inevitable act is delayed, the more costly in lives and treasure it will be.

In another part of the Middle East……

When will our esteemed Congressmen and Senators ask Petraeus, “General, was the CIA in Benghazi running weapons and jihadists to Syria?”

“Who ordered all our military units to stand down and not mount a rescue of the four men killed the night of 9//11/12?”

“Why were the two ex-SEALS killed that night ordered to stand down and not render aid to Ambassador Stevens? Who gave them that order?”

Once we get answers to hard questions like those, we can begin making arrests, trying every person responsible for treason in front of a federal judge and hanging those convicted.

      Sorry Sheepdog.

I don’t understand how the head of the organization at the center of the treason, the CIA, can be “set-up” for what happened the night of 9/11/12. Petraeus was one of the most powerful men ON EARTH. You were either part of a solution or you were part of the treason that night.

Nobody was working for Stevens, Smith, Woods and Doherty that night and, for me, it was the final straw in Obama’s push to control the military. Add the treachery at Benghazi to the report of “workplace violence” at Fort Hood to the selling of weapons during Fast and Furious and it’s clear to me that we’ve lost both our military and federal agents.

I know plenty of you are on government and military pensions; but, you can’t be sleeping at night as this pot boils. Will we hear from you tonight?

After two readings, let’s see if I have gotten this right. Hamas demands that Israel and Egypt lift all restrictions on the movement of goods for humantarian reason because of ‘Gaza’s battered economy’

But yet follows it up with. “Rockets…, …no way to stop obtaining and manufacturing them.”
But, “…Hamas fired Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets” Both means need money but the economy is battered. Oh and we’ve been told that Iran is not involved. Another bad economy country.

“on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the issue with reporters”
Not to mention that if they speak… Well, they recall how last week murders of ‘spies’ occured and one went on a road rash scoot ride.

My guess is the same reason that so many in OUR country allows this administration do whatever they want.
Fear of backlash, fear of loss of being taken care of, fear of the future, fear of not being accepted by their peers and for the most part, fear of not believing in themselves as individuals.

Common denominator time again… Fear !

There will be no peace until Gaza is scraped clean of everything and everyone. These so-called Palestinians are not allowed in any country in the middle-east. Jordan will not take them. Iraq would not take them. Lebanon took a few then threw them out. Syria will not take them. The arabs desire that the Palestinians live in cramped unliveable strips of land because they can keep them angry and hungry and blaming Israel. No one else wants them but they blame Israel. THe truth is most of the Palestinians had no land in Israel but the ones who did left Israel to get out of the way of the Arab armies who said they would come in and drive the Israelis to the sea in 1949 and 1956, They left and still wait for Israel to be driven into the sea. It will not happen.
